Using iBook G3 without battery - power adapter only

I would like to use my iBook G3 without the battery - just with the power adapter plugged in. I've tried starting up with the power plugged in and the battery removed, and no luck. Removing the battery with the power plugged in shuts down the computer.
I have an old battery that doesn't hold charge anymore and needs replacing. I use this computer from home 99.9% of the time and I'd rather not have a hot battery on my lap. Any thoughts or suggestions? I KNOW it's possible to do this as I've always seen demo models in stores set up this way. I have a relatively new adapter - the one that looks like an airport, not like a flying saucer.

Theoretically, it should work, yes. Have you tried resetting the PMU?
However, I strongly recommend against running with no battery for a couple of reasons.
First of all, even a mostly dead battery usually will hold enough of a charge to save your projects you're working on if the iBook is accidentally unplugged.
Next, if Apple had really intended using the iBook this way, they would have provided a battery hatch cover. As it is, using the iBook with no battery in place would subject the terminals to dust, lint, and debris. Needless to say, this is not good.
Apple has never really called its portables "laptops." They are not designed to run on your lap, but on a hard surface. I know most of us use them on our laps, but these days, I use one of these, which my son bought me for Mother's Day. I use it folded in half, and use the foot to prop up the back so that my iBook is kept cooler than it would be otherwise. It works great.
If the heat bothers you, it probably bothers your iBook, too. You may want to look into a similar solution. One long-time Apple user has suggested an inexpensive acrylic cutting board as a lap desk, and that would work fine, too. I don't recommend running without the battery, though, even if you could manage to do it.

    Hello
Its absolutely no problem using the notebook with AC/DC adapter only if no battery is inserted. :)
Battery is only necessary if your notebook isnt connected to mains.

  • HT3131 how can i run in clamshell without the power adapter plugged in?

just what the question states..I dont want to have to always connect the power adapter. thanks

thanks this works well with the power adapter pluged into the mac, but I am looking for this exact setup without the need for the power to be supplied to the mac.
in otherwords, run it off the battery only.
I want to think that there is either a preferences setting, or function to be able to do this.
currently it appears that the mac will only run in the configuration with external perpherials with the power supply.

  • TS2634 Can my iPad mini use the same 12 watt power adapter that the iPad uses?

The small one-inch square power adapter that came with the iPad mini no longer works. A Best Buy employee told me I should be using the larger 12 watt adapter that comes with the iPad. I don't want to damage my mini by using the wrong one. Help?

Absolutely no problem.  The device will draw only as much energy as it can safely absorb.  The 12W rating for the charger is maximum available power.
I've been using a 12W charger with my iPod for about a year now.

  • Is it better to use my Pro with the power adapter plugged in or out?

After charging my MBP's battery to 100%, which is better?
    - keep the power adapter plugged in to the laptop and resume using until you want to turn off the laptop
    OR
    - because the battery is already at 100%, unplug the adapter and resume using until you feel like you should charge the laptop again (maybe around 80%-90%)

If you are convenient to an AC outlet it's fine to use the adapter. However, keeping the AC adapter connected will not have an adverse affect on the battery. Once the battery has been fully charged it will stop charging. Recharge will begin once the battery's charge drops below 95%. LIthium-Ion/Polymer batteries do not exhibit memory effects. • Does updating multiple apps on my MBP use a lot of battery power?

Tonight my MBP battery % dropped AFTER I updated seven iTunes apps, most being bug fixes. It went from 85% to 73% after the updates were completed. Earlier I was using my Beats Pill with NO drop. I had already put the Beats Pill off by the time I did the updates.
Do updates use THAT much battery power?

Do you mean Mac app store apps? Running  Mavericks on a 2011 Macbook Pro should handle it fine, but it can depends on the type and size of the seven apps.  It also depends on you wi-fi connection and your screen/keyboard brightness.  Wi-fi updates can use a lot of battery because it's time consuming, especially if they're large files.

  • Does having wi-fi switched on use a lot of battery power?

..or how much longer does the battery last if you had it switched off all the time?

Posted below is a link for Battery information.
And yes just like any feature in iPhone if you use it for any long length of time it does require battery power to provide those services. Posted below are some Battery saving tips
    1. Settings-WiFi- turn Ask to Join Networks off. This way the iPhone is not always searching for a network. This can save possible battery life.
    2. Settings-General-Bluetooth turn this off if your not using it. By default it is off
    3. Settings-General-Mail - Change Auto Check to Manual. This will reduce the times iPhone goes out automatically checking for email and using bandwidth/extra battery life. That way when you tap on Mail your manually requesting to go out and have it fetch your email when you want it.

  • Not sure if problem is from battery/ power adapter

This morning I tried turning on my laptop, but nothing happened!!
I tried charging it, but the light is green (meaning it is fully charged). The battery indicator light only shows 1 light out of 5. Does this mean that the battery is dead???
    Thanks!!!

The PMU reset is what was done for the Power PC Macs. The SMC reset which you linked to in your post is the correct one to do. They are the same type reset just different names for different Macs. It will not erase any data off your drive.

can some one tell me the specs for the power adapter. Is there  a manual available somewher on apple site for this computer?

    Hi lllaass,
    Thanks for your great answer.
That website link is for a1105. Is it same as a1103?
Also would you know if the power connection port is simlar to the one for appletv? I have an apple tv from 2007 which no longer works. Perhaps I can use that to power the mini.
    Thanks again!

  • HT1665 Can I use a 10 W USB power adapter from an IPad to charge an iPhone 5s.

I have 10 W. USB power adapter that I bought for my iPad. Can I plug my iPhone 5s into it to charge?  I see that the adapter that comes with the 5s is listed at 5 watts.

volts are pushed amps are drawn
if a charger provide the 5volts ios devices were meant to be charged by it does not matter
if it can provide 1000 amps making it a 5000W device because of ohms law which state W = Amps * Volts

  • Okay to use MacBook Pro without battery?

Now I fully understand that it is not such a great idea but I wanted to get some opinions: It's my third NuPower battery. All of them have lasted less than a year and failed pretty bad. This one started bulging quite bad and then I couldn't use the trackpad click button anymore (because it was putting pressure on the trackpad / button.) I took it out and the battery started expanding even outside the laptop! I don't consider myself a rough user. I do occasionally reccaliberate the battery per Apple, make sure I raise the laptop off the table etc. to let air pass under. Currently I am overseas and many Apple resellers do not carry the battery in stock. So I have ordered the battery from Amazon. In the mean time, I am using the MacBook Pro directly hooked up to the 240V outlet with the Apple supplied adapter.
I have heard a few people do this in emergencies. But what say you?! Unlike the US 120V, it's 240 Volts here in India! Somehow I felt better with the battery being there to absorb the jolts! but I have had no issues so far - two days. The Mac wakes up, runs, sleeps fine without a hiccup! I am taking extra care not to trip the extra-easy MagSafe adapter
Has anyone done this? Any direct adverse effects caused by running it straight from the outlet without the battery?

  • USB charging ipod classic (5th) without the power adapter

I'm going to the Gambia, and purchased an extension chord that has a USB plug. The Electricity in The Gambia is 230 Volts, alternating at 50 cycles per second. If I travel to The Gambia with a device that does not accept 230 Volts at 50 Hertz, you will need a voltage converter, will I need one for my ipod.
I have an adapter to plug in the extension chord, but can I plug the ipod into it directly via the USB port ? or do I have to use the adapter ? I have the Apple world travel adapters so it should not be a problem, but it would be convenient to use the USB directly in the extension chord. (i.e. is the small white ipod USB to outlet plug box needed at all ?)
    thanks,
    -Rogers

Jeff is correct. While I don't have a Classic, I do have a Touch and a 3rd gen Nano, both of which I charge with my old firewire charger. Others have reported using the Classic with older chargers.
    Best of luck.
