Using ibooks author

ok so i know you can use ibeeks author to make books for ipad and ios devices... what about...
making a ebook to sell through not only apple but amazon and nook?
making a book to have published in hardbook form?

iBooks Author outputs a 'hybrid' epub (Apple's spec).
Anything that will output a 'standard' epub can be uploaded to the App Store and whatever other outlets you choose.

I am in the process of authoring an eBook using iBook Author.  The project is a work in progress and I want to share the draft with other collegues.  We each have our own iPads synced with other computers and we have different iTunes acounts.  I attempted to preview the book on the new iPad, but the iPad did not come up in the available device window.

  • Can I use iBooks Author as a word processor and sell the text outside of iBooks?  Or does the exclusive license apply even to the text?

I don't know if I want to sell on the iBook store, and I'd rather use iBooks Author than Text Edit or Word or Pages.  I understand that complicated interactive content is what makes iBooks Author special.  But if I create basic text content I could create anywhere, taking advantage of the versioning and iCloud storage iBooks Author provides, do I still own my own writing?

You own your own writing but the license would prevent you from selling it externally if it produced using iBA. You could of course freely give it away, or sell it via the iBookstore. If I were you I'd be using Pages - much friendlier to use (less bugs, more mature) and if you need the extra features you can import into iBA.

  • HT5071 How to download paid iBook created using iBook Author

I would like to submit a paid iBook created using iBook Author and make it available to download in India. Apple does not support downloading paid iBooks in India. Is there a solution for this. Also, is there an enterprise deployment of iBooks ie limited distribution of paid iBook.

Apple requires that books can only be sold through the Store. See iBooks Author: Publishing and distribution FAQ - Support for details otherwise.
As always, feel free to use the 'Provide iBooks Author Feedback' menu item for features you'd like added in the future, etc.

  • Are there any tutorials on the basics of using iBook Author?

I am an established author and want to use iBook Author to make some of my op material (where I have secured all rights)to be made available again.  I have to adapt the iBook Author templates to accomodate the pages.  I need help learning how to do this.

Regarding templates this thread may be useful.  One user is working on a handbook.

  • How are you Using iBooks Author and Samples

I'm curious to see how everyone is using iBooks author to create books. Are most people copy/pasting content into their book or are they directly writing the content in the book? How many have just imported the information from another word processing program? Who is using the program for creating books for children, entertainment or work-related functions?
And that being said, I'm also interseted to see samples of how the books of others look on the iPad, including if possible the children's books, entertainment books or the work-related books. (Including how they incorporated widgets, theme in the pages, fonts, etc)
Me personally, I have been developing two books using iBooks author for work related fuctions. The first book is a training manual for a software program; the second book is a guide to all the reports that can be created in the software program. Both books have been well received by clients.

I generally find that, for creating the text, I'm better off with the word processor of my choice. That way, I get to focus on content and structure and I don't get distracted by layout and formatting issues. While working in the word processor, I use only the simplest of styles. (Logical styles rather than visual ones, the equivalen of HTML <H1>, <H2>, etc.
Once I'm happy with the text and I've done the copy editing, I import into the page layout program and do the layout.
    Cheers,
    Michi.

If you are the author of the content, then you already have all the rights.   Of course if your book contains photos or other things created by other authors, you may need to acquire the rights to use those in your book.

  • HT5544 How do I sync iBooks on iOS devices when I create an ebook using iBooks Author?

How do I sync iBooks on iOS devices when I create an ebook using iBooks Author?

    Hello Ottoni1,
Thank you for the question.  You can preview the book you created in iBooks Author in iBooks on your iPad using the following steps:
Preview a book or a chapter on iPad
    Connect iPad to your Mac.
On the Home screen of your iPad, tap iBooks.
In iBooks Author, do either of the following:
Preview a book: Click the Preview button in the toolbar, or choose File > Preview.
Preview a chapter: Select the chapter you want to preview in the sidebar, then choose File > Preview Current Section Only.
Note:   To preview on an iPad running iOS 7 or later, you need iTunes 11.1 or later installed on your Mac.

  • Do I have to have a Website URL to publish a paid book using ibooks author?

Is it required to have a website url to publish a paid book using ibooks author?

A "website" can be very easily created and at no cost.
I suggest Facebook can cater for  "feedback"  and "product support" although  Wordpress and  other similar blog sites offer a free service which is suffiecient for the purpose and a free /default page template makes it fairly easy  for anybody without knowledge of HTML or CSS - to create a page and  learn to add in much more.
The URL, if you did not know is the address line ie    http://www.apple.com/

Can I create books for iPhone using iBooks Author?

There is a new $5 iBooks Creator app in iOS app store for the iPad.
The output looked pretty good for an iPad app.
There is a video on how to use it to give you an idea of how easy it is.
It creates ePub 2 whihc can be read on all platforms with an ePub reader except Amazon Kindle whihc forbids such things.
You can run the ePub through Calibre and get MOIB for Kindle which works for me.
I have done thirty or forty conversions so far.

  • Another free new ebook on using iBooks Author

    http://ibooksauthorguide.wordpress.com/
Haven't looked at it yet, but this one is done with iBooks Author, by Charles Stack.

Well, now that I've been through it I have to say it's not very useful. Evidently he plans to do a long series on using iBooks Author and this is just a general overview. Interesting only as an example of using iBA, and for those who are just starting as authors, a fairly good section on deciding what you want your book to be (considering target audience and things like that).
I'm kind of surprised there's not more there there, but it's definitely not a patch on Nellie McKesson's book.

  • How to publish an iBook without using iBooks Author?

I've been reading the various pages on the subject and what I've gathered is:
-If you publish through iBooks Author, you can only sell your book through iBooks.
Is there an option in which you can upload a pdf version of the book?
If so, are you required to provide an ISBN or is there a way around it?

You don't have to use iBooks Author (and books produced by iBA can only be read in the iBooks app on iPads and Macs, they can't be read on iPhones nor iPod Touches), but you can't sell PDFs in the iBookstore - but you can sell epubs in it.

Selling books on iTunes : http://www.apple.com/itunes/working-itunes/sell-content/books/
    From the above FAQ :
Do I need an International Standard Book Number (ISBN)?
No, an ISBN is recommended but not required for any book you are offering on the iBooks Store. An ISBN uniquely identifies the book and its current edition, and helps you to ensure that you are marketing the right book. The ISBN is also required for reporting your book's sales to industry reporting agencies and charting organizations.
To obtain an ISBN in the U.S., contact Bowker. To obtain an ISBN outside the U.S., contact the International ISBN Agency.

  • I am a teacher and want to distribute a textbook I created using iBooks Author through Ibooks. We are not 1 to 1 and students share devices on a cart. Can I publish and distribute the book if it is used by multiple students?

Title says it. I created a textbook using Ibooks Author and want to load it on my class set of 30 iPads that are used by 5 different groups of students throughout the day. It is not a 1 to 1 device. Is there a problem with doing this as the Apple ID would be a generic that downloads the content many times on each iPad for my students?

The two processes are so unalike that you need to bone up on what they involve before answering, I think...you can't just shrug and expect specific help, sorry.
See iBooks Author: Publishing and distribution FAQ - Support
Distribution isn't automatically like iOS apps, where the store is involved by default.
You are free to put your .ibook file on a school server/your own server, and anyone can download for free and use it, independent of any Apple ID and the app store. If you want to restrict to your school/students, put it behind a login.
You can put it in the store as a free download and any Apple ID can download and use via any iTunes Account. If you sell via the store, each download/purchase is tied to the Apple ID used to facilitate that transaction. This is not a requirement.
Again, you need to become more familiar with the distribution process and not worry so much about the Apple ID scheme involved at the moment so you can make an informed decision, I think

  • Create ibook in 16:9 format using ibooks Author?

    Hello.
I am designing an ibook that will primarily be viewed by mirroring through AppleTV to an HD TV. I'd like the ibook to view full screen on the TV. I realize this will letterbox the ibook when viewed on the iPad. Does anyone know if I can create a 16:9 aspect ratio ibook using iBooks Author?
    Thanks for any ideas.

Working within a landscape layout, I'm sure you could come up with a recipe that would fit well enough, but the size/ratio is otherwise fixed for use with iBooks on iPad....for now.
If you goal is a specific content driver, you may want to consider using KeyNote slideshows output to QT.
