Using Ichat 3.1 with a Tiger G4 machine.

I innocently clicked on Ichat when I gain access to an Apple camera. I did not recall that I had a .Mac account with a password, but I clicked "continue." I was told my password was incorrect. Several times I have "successfully" changed my password using the series of question about my date of birth and dog's name. I had to do this to post here, which as you can see was successful. But I still get rejected by Ichat. I have even rebutted the computer but with no luck.
My local Apple store says they have never heard of this problem.

An Old @mac.com account that is/was a trial account will still work in iChat.
iChat also uses port 5190 to login to the AIM servers (Apple Names are Valid AIM IDs).
This port has to be open in your Mac Firewall if it is On and also in your modem and or router.

I use to use ichat and now with Mountain Lion I only have FaceTime, will this work as easy as ichat? I try to keep in touch with my son and his family, he has a Mac also. I have never tried to do a video chat with my new Mountain Lion. I have set-up FaceTime and thought I would throw the question out before we try and get together.   Thanks,   Gilbert

Ichat is now called Messages and is in your Applications folder.

  • Using iChat to communicate with Pidgin users on a Citrix Presentation Serve

We have been using iChat on OS X and Pidgin on Windows XP in our environment for several months now. We use Bonjour as the protocol so it makes for a very lightweight easy, inexpensive IM solution on our network (no server component needed).
I hadn't noticed it before today, but I was communicating with a Pidgin user who was using a Citrix Presentation Server login (running Pidgin within that session), and the name that iChat displayed as the person I was talking to was not the actual person that was talking to me. iChat was displaying a different user who was also using Pidgin in another current session on the Citrix box. If I fired up Pidgin on my XP virtual machine and ran Pidgin from there, the user name is identified properly.
So it appears that iChat is tying the user name of the IM session to the IP address and then looking it up from the list, which results in a random mis-identification of the IM user on the Citrix session. BTW, there was a Bonjour update a few days ago, it may actually be Bonjour rather than iChat itself. Anyone have any suggestions, ideas, bug fixes?

I have no new info on this.
It does seem a bit odd.
    Note:
By default Bonjour broadcasts and receives data on port 5353 on UDP Protocol to let other Macs know it is there (Linked to mDNSResponder in Activity Monitor).
    See here http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1629
It may pay to try and check Pidgen and the Mac are using the same ports.

  • Can I use iChat to chat with people on other platforms, e.g. yahoo etc?

    Dear all
Can I use iChat to chat to people on other platforms e.g. yahoo, aol, gmail, jabber etc? For example, I have just managed to sign into iChat with Gmail (had to resort to this because iChat won't let me log-on with my Mobile Me name), but now it seems iChat will only let me add other Gmail users?  Surely there is a way to log in with Gmail but chat with people on other platforms?
Any help would be most appreciated.

    Hi,
Since iChat 4 you have been able to log in to as many AIM or Jabber IDs as you have set up.
In Lion (iChat 6) they become a combined Buddy list.

  • Using iChat to interact with Twitter

I'm a Twitterholic and love using Twitterrific but Twitter has recently added tracking which outputs to SMS or IM only. Since Twitterrific doesn't support this new feature I've tried the Twitter IM bot on iChat. I've abandoned the Twitter IM bot before because of it's spotty and one way service. Now I'm wondering if maybe there's something wrong on my end.
Anyone else having problems interfacing with Twitter IM bot? When it works, I can change my status and send it commands but I have yet to receive a direct posting from it. Wondering what other people's results were.

I've chatted with the Twitter devs and they have admitted that AIM support is not really solid yet. It's on their list of features to fix, but for now they recommend that I use a Jabber account to communicate with the Twitter IM bot. I did this, using Gmail, and I can attest that there is a world of difference between bot support through Jabber versus AIM. Tracking works like a charm, as do notifications and direct tweets. If you don't want to run Twitterrific, or would rather just do it all through iChat and have less taxing your CPU, then set up Jabber in iChat using your Gmail address. I've been very pleased with the results. It's been rock solid as opposed to the spotty, buggy performance through AIM.
    All the best

  • Can I use iChat to chat with someone using gmail's chat utility?

    ...and how?
    Thanks.

As a first choice iChat suggests you use a AIM or @mac.com name.
SInce iChat 3 though you have been able to use Jabber IDs as well and GoogleTalk is a Jabber server.
If you have a GoogleMail ID then you can set up iChat too use that and Text chat to your GoogleTalk able Buddies.
The link Niel posted shows you how to do it in iChat 3 but it is the same in iChat 4 except that you have a Jabber/GoogleTalk split like you have an AIM/@mac.com one when Adding new accounts types.

  • IChat video conferance with people using PCs

If I am using iChat and camcorder with my iBook G4 to video conferance family in Florida who are using a Dell PC with Logitech fusion web cam, what should we use to see each other. AIM, ichat, Yahoo? What program is the most compatible to video confernance between macs and PCs?

    Hi,
Welcome to the Apple Diiscussion Pages
iChat will work to AIM 5.9 or Trillian
Both use the same AIM servers that iChat does.
Aim needs some Setting up (Tuning) first and does not do Audio Only and has a very small pic.
Trillian Basic does do Audio Only but the Pro Version ($25) is needed for Video chat
Both need enabling through the XP Service Pack 2 firewall.

  • Do I need an AIM or Yahoo account to use iChat?

I'm using OS X 10.6.1. I'd like to use iChat for communicating with people that use AIM and Yahoo (some also use MSN). I don't have any of those accounts. I've tried getting an AIM account but never receive any activation email from them.
Once I have, say, an AIM account, what else needs to occur so I can add AIM and Yahoo friends?

    Hi,
Where are you asking AIM to send the confirmation email ?
I am reading this that you asked it to go to the AIM name you were setting up Email address. i.e the same name you were setting up.
To read Mail at AIM you need to have confirmed the Screen Name. to do this you need to be able to access the Email account now. .i.e you can not access an account you have not confirmed yet.
Therefore the Confirmation email needs to go to another email account (whether you access that On line in a web page like GoogleMail or using a Mail application).
It sounds a bit like you have asked a landlord to post you the keys to your new house - at the address of the new house - before you have moved in. (with the British postal service this means they would be pushed through the Letterbox in the front door)
Can you confirm that it is going to a separate email address that you can read other mail in ?

  • IChat not working with Tiger user

I recently received a new Macbook with Leopard already installed on it. I have 2 friends who also own Macbooks, who I iChat with.
One of my friends received her Macbook when Leopard just came out, so she had Tiger on it previously . The other friend has had her Macbook longer, and does not have Leopard, just Tiger.
When attempting to start an iChat with the friend with Tiger, it would not work. The weird thing about it though is that it has worked a few times before, if we kept trying and I found if I restarted my computer.
However, now the friend that previously had Tiger had problems with her Macbook and received a brand new one with Leopard already on it. Now it does not work for her to start an iChat with the Tiger user, although she had no problems with her old computer.
    Sorry it's confusing!
But in conclusion, it seems that iChat is not working between a Leopard and Tiger user. The confusing part is that we have gotten it to work before...so I'm really not sure what the problem is.
What can we try to get this to work all the time, without her having to upgrade to Leopard?
I usually get an error response saying there was no data received for the last 10 seconds, and she gets different things about Bandwidth, and saying she cancelled the invitation when she didn't.
    Thanks

Personally, I think it's Leopard that is at fault here. I had Tiger and my family and I would video iChat all the time. But then we downloaded Leopard. We discovered we could no longer video iChat.
My son used 4 different computers (all Macs of course), trying same network and different networks. What he discovered is that the ONLY way video iChat now works is if computers are on the same network. Well, how absurd, because the idea is to be able to video iChat with anyone, not just family members in the same household on the same network.
Apparently, somewhere, Apple (Leopard) bragged about their new improved iChat video on a network. Well, I think they forgot that not all of us are sitting in an office wanting to spend the time to iChat video with co-workers, but have friends and family in other areas we'd like to video iChat with.
So through a process of elimination, it all led back to Leopard as being the culprit, because Tiger to Tiger worked perfectly, and even Leopard to Tiger works IF you are on the same network.
I really do hope Apple supplies a FIX for this problem. I, for one, am VERY disappointed in the fact that I now have Leopard and can no longer video iChat with friends across the country.

  • How do i use my apple id with ichat?

how do i use my apple id with ichat?

    Hi,
Only @Mac.com and MobileMe Apple IDs are valid AIM names as well  (And the Passwords need to be 16 characters of Less - AIM end Issue).
If you have any other form of Apple ID then you will need to register for either an @mac.com name  or create an AIM one.
NOTE The @Mac.com Registration requires you link an active Email to the @Mac.com name.
THIS CANNOT BE an Email address you have used for an Apple ID already.
The AIM Registration asks for Email address for Security and Password Recovery and is not Hard Linked in the same way (you could use the same email to set up multiple accounts/Screen Names)
    To state things another way:-
A MobileMe ID is an Email address.
It is an Apple ID and will work in those places it is supposed to, iTunes, Apple Support Communities (with Alias set up), Face Time (With Registration) Apple On-Line Store, Mac App Store.
It is a Vlaid AIM NAme as well (If the password is kept to 16 characters or less).
@mac.com names are Apple IDs with the same access as above.
It is a Valid AIM Screen Name.
If it was registered before MobileMe started it maybe linked to a Current MobileMe account as a valid Email.
A Current Registration is purposely for iChat use and Requires a Non Apple current Email that is NOT linked to any other Apple ID
Any other name or Email used to create an Apple ID is not an Email with/through Apple.
It is NOT a valid AIM screen Name.
It is only an Apple ID that allows access to the places listed above.
If it is an email this cannot be used to Register with @mac.com
    I hope this is clear.

  • Can two peeps use iChat with different accounts on the same computer?

What do I do to REMOVE an old AIM account and replace it with a new account in IChat?
Can two peeps use iChat with different accounts in the same computer?
(Actually, two people share a laptop, but one of us cannot use her AIM account cuz mine is in iChat already... And, when traveling, I have the computer - and I would like to use iChat on the computer...)

In iChat 4 you can have more than one AIM Valid name logged in at once.
AIM valid = AIM, @mac.com or a MobileMe name.
What you are then stuck with is that iChat is linked to one Buddy Picture and The one Mac User Account's Address Book which may or may not have Full Names, emails details, or a Nickname in iChat 4 linked to the Screen Names.
Whilst it does let you both log in whilst using one Mac User Account there are drawbacks about who uses the keyboard and reading meesages from the other persons Buddies.

  • Is there a way to use iChat on Lion to communicate with my iCloud contacts using iMessage on their devices?

I currently have a MacBook Pro, iPhone and iPad with working iMesagge, all these i use to chat with my iMessage contacts without conflicts, recently I've been assigned a MacBook in my job which can't be upgraded to Mountail Lion and currently has iChat 6 installed.
When i log in using iChat, it doesn't list any of my contacts. Adding them manually gets them in the buddy list but still doesn't allow to send them messages since they all appear offline.
I already signed in with my Apple ID in the MacBook, the same one I use with all my working devices mentioned above. There is only one user account in the MacBook which i have created since this computer has been assigned to me only.
    Any ideas?

    Hi,
    Messages  is iChat+
The Plus bit being the Apple iMessages service.
Apart from the iMessages service both apps can join:
AIM (with AIM registered or AIM Valid Screen Names ending in @mac.com @me.com and @icloud.com from Apple)
Jabber (with names registered at Jabber servers.  Two exceptions are GoogleTalk IDs and Facebook IDs)
iChat 6 and Messages can also Join Yahoo.  Must be a registered Yahoo Name and not one of the ones that can be used with the Yahoo App itself.
All these chats will be AIM to AIM, Jabber to Jabber or Yahoo to Yahoo.
The confusing can be that each can use email looking names and IDs.
Jabber Names (with the exception of Google) are in the form of [email protected]
AIM registered names don't normally have any @AOL/AIM.com suffix but @ is an allowed character and as mentioned @mac.com, @me.com and @icloud.com names are also Valid.
Yahoo are also email looking  names in the form [email protected]
This does tend to mean it is easy to add an email to any Buddy list and it is initially accepted as it conform the the format.
Mostly they will appear Off line in an AIM list and Awaiting Authorisation in a Jabber list.
iChat as such will not chat to your iMessages Contacts.
It is an extra service that the Message App can join in addition to AIM, Jabber or Yahoo.
