Using iChat for Garageband training

There have been a couple of mentions in this forum regarding iChat and Screen Sharing where the app in question is an audio app - the only audio shared is the microphone. One solution is to use Soundflower. Soundflower itself is simple.. after installing, use Garageband's audio preferences to output to Soundflower, and set iChat's audio input to Soundflower. This sends all the GB audio directly to iChat. However, that excludes the Mac's own microphone and anything I might wish to say - and be heard.
The same problem is encountered when trying to do Quicktime Screen Recording - the audio is either the system microphone, or, using Soundflower, the internal audio application.
An Audio Midi Setup "aggregate device" allegedly allows multiple sound sources to be mixed together. But I can't quite suss out how this works.
A block diagram would be:
Garageband audio out>Soundflower
Aggregate device: Mac Mic + Soundflower (Garageband output)
Aggregate device is set as the iChat audio input device
If it were that simple, then why was SoundflowerBED created??
Since I have no one at this time to try an iChat with, I may try this combination with a QT Screen Recording. If anyone's used this combination, please lay your wisdom on me !!
thanks - Karl out West

Hi,
iChat was first developed as an AIM client.
That means you can Text chat at least to AIM Screen Names, Apple IDs (@mac.com and @me.com), ICQ and other email type names that are allowed similar to the Apple IDs (Normally a deal by the persons ISP)
Video and Audio only chats are possible between AIM and iChat (Earlier versions of AIM on a PC do better)
There is a Third Party app called Trillian for the PC that can also do Audio only and Video chats.
At iChat 3 Jabber Support was added.
An iChat to iChat Video chat can be done with Jabber Buddy lists (Screen Names) at both ends as iChat involves the same video codecs (same for Audio Only chats)
To other Jabber Clients on any platform is Text Only.
GoogleTalk is a Jabber server. However iChat cannot Video chat to the webmail Chat option as this is different Video codecs again (Flash based) and is different again from the PC GoogleTalk app which iChat cannot Video or Audio chat to.
Screen Colour.
In System Preferences > Desktop and Screen Saver you can choose from a range of presets supplied by Apple and it also links to the photos in iPhoto or the option to navigate the hard drive to any pic you have, giving you the option from a plain colour to any picture you want.
However if the Mac has been set up with only one User Account if you change it your Husband may not like it.
It may be better to create a second account on the mac for you
System Preferences > Accounts. Then you can have all your own settings and your Address Book will be separate from his. (And your iChat Buddy List)

  • Is it possible to use iChat for non network video conferanci

    Hi all,
I am looking for a little help please. This may be a fruitless question, but here it goes. I have a deaf 5th grader. TTY relay is essentially a thing of the past, and all of her friends are using 'video phone' to keep in touch. Anyway, today we got a Sorenson VRS router and video phone camera from her school, and it uses our existing cable internet connection. It is a BUNCH of stuff to hook up to an already crowded system. Does anyone have any ideas about the possibility of using iChat for my daughter to connect to her friends that will be using a different system?
Sorry if this is the question of a Neophyte. I am learning this deaf world as i go.
    Thanks,
    Chad

    HI Randell,
Welcome to the Apple Discussion Pages.
I can tell you what iChat will do and maybe that will help.
iChat is an Instant Messaging service that uses the AIM servers. Therefore it is an AIM client.
AIM stands for AOL Instant Messenger.
You can join this service in several ways.
    1) By having the AOL Package where AOL is your Internet provider (ISP)
    2) By having the stand alone Application referred on these Discussions as the AIM application (comes in several version for PC, Macs, Linux and phones although each version varies as to what it can do - see side bar at link page).
    3) Or by another application that is also an AIM client.
On a Mac that can be Proteus or AdiumX, there are PC AIM clients like Trillian.
Some AIM clients only do some of the features.
FOr instance iChat to PC AIM can Video (Moving Pics and Sound) but not Audio only.
iChat to Trillian on a PC can do both Video and Audio only if the PC end has the Pro version of Trillian ($25)
All clients can at least Text chat.
Many can send files and pics as well as Text chatting.
iChat can support Text chatting, Audio Chats and Video chats. Any USB Mic will work for Audio chats. Many Firewire DV Camcorders also work, many Firewire Webcams also work and some USB cams can be made to work with iChat.
To do this iChat needs a fast enough Mac (Procesor speed) and a fast enough interent Connection Speed.
In iChat 2 there is felt to be a better chance of success with connections to PC machines running either AIM (or the AOL package) or Trillian Pro for Video chats.
Text chats and Video chats can be done to the same Buddy (contact) at the same time. I would have thought this would be ideal as it provides a chance to practice lip reading skills and not missing any of the info.
What iChat 2 can not do.
    1) Chat to other services like MSN or Yahoo!
    2) Chat or link to Video phones.
    3) Video to Mobile (cell) phones.
    4) Connect to other Video conferencing services.
    For more info start here
Faq on how to start in iChat
This tells you more about connecting to PCs.
More info than you might need at this stage http://www.ralphjohnsuk.dsl.pipex.com/
    What iChat 3 adds.
    1) Upto 4 people in a Video chat
    2) Access to the Jabber service (Another Instant Messaging service). This also can use Jabber servers that provide things called Tranports Gateways to other IM services which allows Text chatting to Buddiies on these services.

  • How can I use iChat for Hotmail?

I would like to use iChat with hotmail... is it possible? ANy other method thatn Jabber?

    Hi,
The only method at the moment to Contact MSN Buddies is using the Jabber Method and a Jabber Transport.
MSN for Mac version 8 can be downloaded as a free Standalone from Mactopia (the Microsoft Mac Pages) and can do Video chats.

    Hi,
There is no iChat on the iOS 5 devices
However iChat on a Mac can send SMS messages to a Phone - Providing the computer  thinks it is in the United States and the Phone is serviced by a USA Carrier that takes part in the AIM Forwarding service.

  • Need advice Macbook Air 13" or Macbook Pro (use it for Garageband)

Being that I have other Apple devices now I am also considering an Apple laptop.  I went to the Apple store a few weeks back and was really interested in the Apple Macbook Air 13" model.
    My requirements are:
    - portability (even thought I will not travel with it much)
    - use it for personal email and browsing.
    - use it for work as well.  I work from home so I would use it in conjunction with my work laptop which is windows based.
    - Do recording using Garageband. (I find the iPad just doesn't have enough tracks)
    - Will also install windows on it for occasional use but for the majority of the time will run in the native mac OS.
    - I am not a big gamer anymore but may purchase the odd game now and then.
    - Don't intend to watch DVDs on it.
    - All my files are stored on a Windows Home Server setup at home so will access most files from my local LAN.  Therefore not looking to store a huge amount of data.
However one of the Apple Reps told me that I really should consider the Apple MacBook Pro instead as it has more power and expandability in addition to a bigger screen (15"). I seemed to be someone sold on his reasoning and was leaning towards a Macbook Pro.   I am not sure that having a bigger screen is a must have but maybe so for Garageband.
    Therefore it would between:
    Macbook Air 13", 8GB internal, 256GB Flash = $1599
    Macbook Pro 15", 8GB internal, 500GB drive @ 5400 rpm = $1899
And if I went with a smaller screen.
    Macbook Pro 13", 8GB internal, 750GB drive @ 5400 rpm = $1499
Is there someone out in the community that had a similar consideration before making your purchase?  Will I have performance issues with the Macbook Air? Any advice or things that I should consider.
    Thank you.

    1) I used to use BootCamp but switched to Parallels Desktop exclusively a couple years ago. I have a couple programs for work I have to run in Windows and a web app that runs only in IE. Parallels works for me, including when I have to use Access or MS Publisher. I use Mac Office and only keep Win Office for the few times I must access a Publisher file or use Access. Parallels gives you a month to decide so I'd say go for it and see if it works for you. The big advantages are being able to run Windows and the  Mac OS without rebooting and that your Windows virtual drive can expand as needed. With a 256GB drive you'll want to be very careful about not wasting space and with BootCamp you must allocate a partition which isn't always easy to resize.
    2) It depends on when you buy and where you buy. Apple's in store stock turns over very rapidly so a week or two after ML ships you should be able to get it pre-installed. If you buy online you are getting it straight from the factory so it should be pre-installed almost immediately. Other resellers turn over stock more slowly. If it isn't pre-installed you'll get instructions for how to download it. Lion was an hour download and 30 minute upgrade for me last year.
    3) Typically Apple supports its hardware with new OS upgrades for about 5-6 years. Mountain Lion surprised us by dropping a couple computers earlier than that but the determining factor for ML seems to be 100% 64 bit architecture and some graphics architecture. This site talks about what isn't supported. All 2009 models are supported.
    4) Every once in a while you run across someone complaining that his/her Thunderbolt-Ethernet dongles isn't working but I know of no one who has had trouble. I'm 100% wireless at home and mostly wireless at work so I can't say.
    5) I have a Samsung digital at home and an NEC vga external display at work. Two different dongles but... I came across a very old NEC (probably pre 1995) projector I couldn't connect to, that's the only problem I know of. I see lots of connection problems at work mostly due to issues between the keyboard and chair, not hardware or software.
    6) What is total performance? The truth about processors is that just about the time a processor is replaced by the next new thing software and language developers have caught up with the new technology. I waffled on the i7 and chose against it for my MBA. The speed increase doesn't seem to be that significant and I'll be replacing the computer in 2 years. When I replace my iMac later this year I'll go with a processor upgrade because I intend for it to last longer.

  • Use iChat for home monitoring

Hello. I would like to use the video portion of iChat for home monitoring. Is it possible to access my home iMac camera, through iChat, from my workplace? To make things interesting, my Mac monitor at work does not have a built in camera and I have no external webcam. Is it possible for me to connect to my home camera through iChat even though I have no camera at work?
I look forward to hearing any ideas.
    Thank you.

I was setting up my home computer for automatic video monitoring through iChat when I noticed something in the energy settings in system preferences. I wanted to have my screen saver in use or turn the monitor brightness all the way down to save my screen life. I also wanted to keep my computer awake so that I could have access to the home iChat account and computer/camera. However, if I set my Display Sleep and Computer Sleep settings to "Never" sleep, I receive the notice of "Never letting your display go to sleep may shorten its life".
So it seems no matter what, I may shorten the life of my monitor and I would most likely be increasing energy consumption by keeping my monitor and computer awake while I am away from home.
Is there anyway around this? If I used Screen Share (VNC), or any dedicated software like Vitamin D or EvoCam, would I still need to worry about my computer's energy consumption? I suppose if I really wanted a dedicated video monitoring setup I could use an external camera and external computer or server? I've read that some people use a Mac Mini for this, but thats seems like a waste of a Mac mini to me. I was really just planning on doing this occasionally to check in on my apartment.
    Thoughts?
I will probably only video monitor a couple of times a week, so maybe the energy settings are nothing to worry about.

  • Use 'iControl for GarageBand' with iMovie

M-Audio's iControl is intended only for use with GarageBand: but it is possible to make it work with other programs to an extent. Here is a way of using the transport buttons and jog wheel with iMovie. (Tested with iMovie 4 but I assume it should work the same with later versions).
    Download MIDIstroke from
    http://www.charlie-roberts.com/midiStroke/
    (it's free).
On the left in the three columns num/chn/value enter the values separated by / below, then map each set on the right side by entering the text as shown and ticking the 'shift' box where indicated
    24/1/1 - RIGHT
    24/1/127 - LEFT
    109/1/127 - SPACE
    110/1/127 - RIGHT [SHIFT]
    108/1/127 - LEFT [SHIFT]
    106/1/127 - SPACE
    107/1/127 - HOME
    111/1/127 - END
Connect the iControl, run MIDIstroke and iMovie.
Now the jog wheel will jog the movie backwards or forwards a frame at a time: however if you move it too fast it will fail to respond at all.
The transport buttons are mapped as follows:
Record and play will both toggle start and stop as appropriate in the program.
Fast forward and back will make a single jump of ten seconds for each press (there is no repeat when held down).
Go to beginning does just that, and the cycle button goes to the end.
It's not ideal but if you already have an iControl and you don't have a mouse with a scroll wheel (and a driver for mapping to keystrokes), or something with a jog wheel, this might make editing a bit easier.
You could use MIDI Monitor (also free) from
    http://www.snoize.com/MIDIMonitor/
to tell you what commands are being sent by the various iControl buttons and knobs and then use those to map any way you want in any program -the only caveat is that you can't have different commands in different programs: and obviously there has to be a keystroke to do whatever it is you want.

  • HT2515 My cam works fine with every program except yahoo.  If I just sign into yahoo or even if I use ichat for yahoo, the webcam button will not highlight up.  How can I fix this and/or what am I doing wrong?

Hello, my father recently passed (using his ID) and I took over the payments on his mac and took his computer.  I am not that familiar with mac, but am usually computer savy.  However, this one has me stumped.  I have no problem starting the built in cam and it seems to work fine with all other programs I've tried using it with.  However, it will not work with yahoo.  Whether I use normal yahoo messenger or if I try using Yahoo through I chat.  The cam button will not light up, therefore, it is not clickable.  Which ultimately means I cannot use my cam on yahoo, which is something I use 99% of the time compared to other programs.  So why is this happening and what solutions can I take to try and fix this?  The mac I am using is: Mac OS X, Version 10.7.4
Thank you for any and all help, it is much appreciated.

  • How to use iChat to register a new Jabber Account

I work in an office with all Macs and we'd like to begin using iChat for intra-office messaging. Many of us already have AIM accounts, but we'd like to keep internal office communication strictly internal. We have a computer running Parallels Server and I've downloaded some different Jabber virtual appliances. The difficulty is that when I try to connect from iChat I'm continually prompted for a password.
Now, I've read that Jabber needs an account to be "registered" and several messaging clients (Psi, Adium, etc) support that registration process. What I'd like to know is either:
    a) How can one use iChat to perform the Jabber account registration process?
    or
    b) Is there another suggested piece of software that could be used by an administrator or one individual that could complete that process so that clients could use iChat?
    That ought to do it.
    Thanks.

    Hi,
With the exception of the Get a iChat Screen Name button in the First pane of Add an Account ichat has no other way to Register any name.
AN MobileMe name from Apple, an AIM Name for the AIM site or a Google Name all require that you register via a web Browser on a site.
Some Other Jabber servers also allow you to do this but on the whole it needs something like Psi or AdimuX that have the Jabber Registration module.
However if you are using OX Server then the Tiger and Leopard version have an iChat Server (which is a Jabber Server) on which Accounts can be set up.

  • HELP - not receiving sms on android after using ichat

For the past 3 months, I have lost the ability to receive SMS texts about once a month.
The first time it happened right after I sent somone an ichat on my ipad. Up until then, I had not used ichat for about one year, which is when I went from an iPhone to an android (and I have not used it since then either). I did some research online and found some suggestions on how to fix the issue. A few forums suggested removing my cell phone # from my Apple Support profile. A few others said to change my apple password. I did both and my messages started coming in about 3 days after they stopped.
About 3 weeks later, I stopped receiving them again. I looked at my Apple Support profile and found that my cell phone # had been added back in. Thinking that maybe Apple has some job that runs every so often and repopulates information on blank fields, I removed my cell phone # again and entered a bogus #.
Couple days ago I stopped receiving texts again. I looked at my Apple Support profile and found that the bogus # is still listed so that was not what fixed it the first time.
I have called ATT (my carrier) repeatedly and they have tried to trouble shoot my problem with no success. They suggest that it's only something that Apple can fix. I have also called Apple and they suggest that it's an ATT issue. No one has been able to help me. It really surprises me that this is not a known issue with a fix.
So here is the problem in a nutshell:
I am not receiving sms texts on my android, from anyone at all.. doesn't matter what kind of phone they have or who their carrier is.
    I DO receive mms texts.
All of my texts are going through no probelm.
Does anyone have any clue how I can stop this from happening every few weeks? I want to stick with my current phone until the next iPhone comes out. Any leads on this issue are greatly appreciated!
    Thanks!!

I just don't understand what you mean by "invites". What kind of "invite" did you send "from another gmail to gmail"?
What about a simple email? Do you receive simple email messages to that address?

  • I want to Use iChat with Skype to Videoconference several people

I want to video conference in my niece in New Zealand (PC using Skype) with iChat and the rest of my Mac family stateside.
I have Skype for Mac running and I have the iChat AV running. Any chance to hook in the Skype User with the iChat multi-pane video conference?
It looks like iChat only accepts iChat and AIM but not Skype. My niece apparently cannot get AIM in New Zealand.
Any clever help would be appreciated.

I want to use iChat for Skype as well. I want one chat client for all my communications. That was the point of iChat in the beginning, wasn't it? Hopefully, Apple will jump on the ball and support the best way for us common folk to communicate internationally. The supported Aim when they were king, why not the new king?
I stinks that I can not use the great app, because one no Skype but two I don't know anyone else that uses .mac.

  • Do I need an AIM or Yahoo account to use iChat?

I'm using OS X 10.6.1. I'd like to use iChat for communicating with people that use AIM and Yahoo (some also use MSN). I don't have any of those accounts. I've tried getting an AIM account but never receive any activation email from them.
Once I have, say, an AIM account, what else needs to occur so I can add AIM and Yahoo friends?

    Hi,
Where are you asking AIM to send the confirmation email ?
I am reading this that you asked it to go to the AIM name you were setting up Email address. i.e the same name you were setting up.
To read Mail at AIM you need to have confirmed the Screen Name. to do this you need to be able to access the Email account now. .i.e you can not access an account you have not confirmed yet.
Therefore the Confirmation email needs to go to another email account (whether you access that On line in a web page like GoogleMail or using a Mail application).
It sounds a bit like you have asked a landlord to post you the keys to your new house - at the address of the new house - before you have moved in. (with the British postal service this means they would be pushed through the Letterbox in the front door)
Can you confirm that it is going to a separate email address that you can read other mail in ?
