Using iChat from Dubai
I'm a new Mac user, and I'm trying to get into the Apple way of doing things!
One of the hurdles that I need to overcome is with iChat; I've been trying to get onto iChat from Dubai without success. I'm connecting to the internet via Etisalat's broadband home service (wireless), but cannot get connected (time-out; message says "Could not connect to AIM. The connection could not be completed because it timed out. Try again."
Is this service blocked by Etisalat as is the case with Skype? Also, what is the relevance of AIM? Is this a different route to the iChat environment, or is AIM another way of saying connect via the .mac membership account?
Any help would be much appreciated.....

Hi
First try this log on to AIM on port 443 rather than port 5190.
Go to IChat > Preferences > Accounts.
Log out of AIM and then use the Server Settings tab
Set the port to 443.
Log back in again.

Bought my iPhone 4 from Dubai even though it's a factory unlocked phone I don't have a FaceTime button in setting so I'm wondering is there anyway I can get the FaceTime with out jail breaking my device it's working on iOS 4.3.5 , I read so much about getting it after u jailbreak Ur phone u get FaceTime but can I get it with out jail breaking my device as I'm using it in india please reply guys
iPhones purchased in the UAE do not have FaceTime installed and FaceTime will not appear regardless of where the phone is taken.
Jailbreaking will void your warranty with Apple, may permanently render your phone unusuable, and will eliminate the possibility of getting help from Apple or its forums including this one.
If you want FaceTime on an iPhone, sell that phone and purchase one from one of the authorized iPhone dealers in India. -

Anyone using Ichat Theater Preview from within AE 5.5*
I've got AE5.5, and I'm trying to use Ichat theater preview output. No luck. Works from within fcp7, all other output options work. Have a blackmagic intensity pro card installed on my macpro. Is this working for anyone? Running Snow Leopard.

The query i have is that ,, i have an iphone which i purchased from dubai . facetime was blocked on it when i purchased it . however now i use the phone in india and i want to use facetime on it .
i wanted to know if there is any way i can activate facetime on it .
i am having the same problem with the 4s i purchased from riyadh .You can't. FaceTime has been permanently removed from your phone, there is no way to add it back. Next time, buy your phone in India.

I purchared an iPhone 4s from Dubai and find that it does not have FaceTime on it.
The phone is now used in Europe.
How do I get to instal FaceTime please?The iPhone from Dubai will never be able to have FaceTime. The iPhone country of origin (serial no. and imei no.) is the culprit. The government there has banned FaceTime.

ONLY the carrier it is locked to can authorize unlocking it. Most have restrictions in that you must be a current customer and have maintained service for a minimum period of time. Do yourself a favor, sell it and purchase a phone in India instead.

If you bought your phone from an official source, like a carrier and not in some 'market / ebay', then you can update with no issues.
If you bought it from other than a carrier then you have to take your chances. -

It is Prudent to purchase the Phone in the Country it is intended for use in... it will then work as expected.

What is the model number of your iPhone? Settings=>General=>About, scroll
down to Model.
FaceTime is restricted in certain Middle East countries and iPhones designated

(Actually, two people share a laptop, but one of us cannot use her AIM account cuz mine is in iChat already... And, when traveling, I have the computer - and I would like to use iChat on the computer...)In iChat 4 you can have more than one AIM Valid name logged in at once.
AIM valid = AIM, @mac.com or a MobileMe name.
What you are then stuck with is that iChat is linked to one Buddy Picture and The one Mac User Account's Address Book which may or may not have Full Names, emails details, or a Nickname in iChat 4 linked to the Screen Names.
Whilst it does let you both log in whilst using one Mac User Account there are drawbacks about who uses the keyboard and reading meesages from the other persons Buddies.

I currently have a MacBook Pro, iPhone and iPad with working iMesagge, all these i use to chat with my iMessage contacts without conflicts, recently I've been assigned a MacBook in my job which can't be upgraded to Mountail Lion and currently has iChat 6 installed.
When i log in using iChat, it doesn't list any of my contacts. Adding them manually gets them in the buddy list but still doesn't allow to send them messages since they all appear offline.
I already signed in with my Apple ID in the MacBook, the same one I use with all my working devices mentioned above. There is only one user account in the MacBook which i have created since this computer has been assigned to me only.

Messages is iChat+
The Plus bit being the Apple iMessages service.
Apart from the iMessages service both apps can join:
AIM (with AIM registered or AIM Valid Screen Names ending in @mac.com @me.com and @icloud.com from Apple)
Jabber (with names registered at Jabber servers. Two exceptions are GoogleTalk IDs and Facebook IDs)
iChat 6 and Messages can also Join Yahoo. Must be a registered Yahoo Name and not one of the ones that can be used with the Yahoo App itself.
All these chats will be AIM to AIM, Jabber to Jabber or Yahoo to Yahoo.
The confusing can be that each can use email looking names and IDs.
Jabber Names (with the exception of Google) are in the form of [email protected]
AIM registered names don't normally have any @AOL/AIM.com suffix but @ is an allowed character and as mentioned @mac.com, @me.com and @icloud.com names are also Valid.
Yahoo are also email looking names in the form [email protected]
This does tend to mean it is easy to add an email to any Buddy list and it is initially accepted as it conform the the format.
Mostly they will appear Off line in an AIM list and Awaiting Authorisation in a Jabber list.
iChat as such will not chat to your iMessages Contacts.
It is an extra service that the Message App can join in addition to AIM, Jabber or Yahoo.

The only method at the moment to Contact MSN Buddies is using the Jabber Method and a Jabber Transport.
MSN for Mac version 8 can be downloaded as a free Standalone from Mactopia (the Microsoft Mac Pages) and can do Video chats.
