Using iCloud as iDisk, and other questions . . .

Friends,
I am used to keeping my iDisk on the desktop of all my computers, so with one quick click I can get to all my stored documents. I travel a lot and keep all my work documents on the iDisk.
The iDisk icon still shows on my 27" iMac, but no longer shows on my macbook (both running Lion).
I know that Apple wants everyone to move to iCloud (and I still don't know what the difference is--what features iCloud has over Mobile Me), but here's what I want to do . . . can anyone help?
1. Keep my iCloud drive on my desktop just like I do with iDisk.
2. Still have access to "gallery" so I can host photos. As I understand it, this feature is going away with iCloud. True?
3. I am using iCloud on all my devices (at least it's on all my devices, turned on), but the MacBook isn't syncing. So, if I remove bookmarks on my iMac, the MacBook isn't getting them.
4. *** does iCloud offer me (of value) over MM?
Thanks.

Here to answer questions.....I thought WC was longer with us....good answer.
I agree MM had the features I really liked (am was a very long time .mac member).  iCloud will only get better at least that's my dream.  I don't miss iDisk but certainly miss keychain and mail preferences sync.  I hate the thought of making a new encrypted spare image then saving the keychain on my other computers.
Just wait...............................I think iCloud will evolve into super sync for all Apple devices.   Thats what all Mac users yearn for (wait for OS 11.0 code name Cirrus).
Cheers

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
You don't need to do anything, you have chosen to back up to iCloud instead of iTunes.
Being able to back up to the cloud can be very useful, especially if you don't have access to a computer or have infrequent access to one, however unless you specifically need to use iCloud for back up, you will find backing up to iTunes significantly more convenient and possibly more reliable.

I'm using Mountain Lion, kernel_task and other background service are using an awful lot of my memory my memory. I can't run any other programs without the beach ball I can hear the hard drive running like crazy in the background.I have 8GB of memory and everything has worked well until recently.
I am sort of new at posting let me know what other info I can provide
    Thank you
    Howard

I was noticing the same today.  I have been running this on my Mac Pro circa early 2008.  At the time I notice some sluggish I had three items using over 5 GB of real memory.  kernal_task, iTunes, and Safari.  I did a formal "quit" for iTunes & Safari which reduced the memory down (iTunes was 1.3GB and Safari was 2.0GB).  Here is a screen capture of what is right now.  The kernel_task is at 2.01GB.
At time of this screen capture my uptime has been:
    up 4 days, 23:37, 2 users, load averages: 1.56 1.70 2.04
The specs of the Mac Pro is with a lot of hard drive space on the boot drive (50% free) which is mostly my main account user data.  Applications files and other data is actually on a second drive which is also at 50%.  Drive 3 & Drive 4 are RAID 0 used for Time Machine.  RAM is 32GB as the picture denotes.
I have a MacBook Pro (circa 2011), iMac 27" i7 (circa 2009), and Mac Mini (circa 2010) which don't have any large kernal memory usage.
    Thank you in advance...

First, did you use Setup or Migration Assistant? That can happen when coming from a PowerMac or sometimes even from another (Intel) Mac.
Second, wait for the next version of Final Cut due very soon to ship (may have to wait for the ".1" of course to clean up any early issues.

  • Which Firmware should I use and other questions

Question 1: I am going to get a mac OS x either 10.0 or 10.1 disk on this iMac once I increase the RAM and exchange the processor with a 400 Mhz g3 powerPC processor (From a friends iMac) and get a external hard drive. So which Firmware should I get in this tray loader? I currently have mac os 9.2.2 and plan on updating this baby with mac os x. Can someone please provide a link to the FirmWare?
Question 2: Could I get a cp100 256mb ram and put it in one of my ram slots while I have my original 64mb Ram so it would equal to 320mb? And if so, would mac os x work well with 320mbs of ram?
Question 3: Also, one more question, my brother has a macintosh REALLY old computer and it has Apple Audio CD Player, and I really want to play Audio CDs on this, I also have iTunes 2.0.4 and when I put in a music CD to listen to it on iTunes, it doesnt read it so I then browsed my computer and clicked on iDisk and the computer froze. I also would like to burn CDs onto iTunes, any help would be great. Thanks. Peace. Lata'.

When you are asking about the ram requirements, you mean what kind fo ram does a tray loader take? In that case, it uses SODIMM PC66 ram.
As for Cd-Burners, externals would have you limited to USB 1 connections since you ahve a tray loading iMac, which is a max 4x speed (slowwwwwww). wegenermedia.com sells an internal replacement if you wanted to go that route, but you're starting to talk about putting a lot of money into an old machine at that point.
You don't need 9.2 to install OS X. The only thing you need to have done is the firmware update.
If you used firmware update 1.2 and it said you may already have newer firmware, then you probably ran it a long time ago and forgot. If you check your apple system profiler, I believe its supposed to say the boot rom is version 3.03f.
10.3 shouldn't be any slower than 10.2 I don't think. Apple's done a good job optimizsing each version of OS X better than its predcessor. But 10.2 was a fine OS as well and can run most OS X software.
external hard drives, like the CD-RW drive option, would be limited to USB 1 speed, which is good only for backup purposes. a better option would be an internal upgrade. see http://www.djonmac.com for instructions.
I understand your concern about buying things with your credit card online, but here's the reality of that situation: far and away most idendity theft occurs from people going through your trash, or using "phishing" email scams, or from friends and relatives. Many of the high profile credit card company breaches have been at the credit card processors themselves, so whether you used your card online or not didn't make a difference to those security breaches. You could get scammed by the employee at a physical store as easily or easier than an online store in many cases. Buying from the internet is safe when you buy from reputable sites with secure pages (indicated by the little yellow lock at the bottom of your browser). if you feel really unsafe about it, some credit cards offer random one time use number generaters for buying online, or you could get a visa gift card or secured credit card which would prevent anyone from having access to any more money than you have on there.

  • Using iCloud (for calendar and contacts) AND MobileMe for Keychain

Does anyone who's migrated to iCloud know if it's possible to sync Address Book and Calendar through iCloud and the Keychain through MobileMe (on a separate account)?
    Situation is as follows:
I have two accounts - one MobileMe (which I use today for calendar and contact syncing) and an Apple ID (which I used for iTunes)
I wish to convert the iTunes account to an iCloud account
That leaves me with my un-converted MobileMe which I'd like to continue to use for Keychain syncing until Apple puts that functionality in iCloud or they retire MobileMe.
I guess - the nub of the question is - is it still possible to access the MobileMe preference pane and put in a different account when iCloud is up and syncing?
    Thanks in advance, Jonathan.

    SaltSeaShark,
I've looked at the iDisk and there's no way to do it automatically.  However when you're back at your home iMac, you can copy the files that you find in ~/Library/Keychains onto your iDisk.  Then when you're at your friend's iMac, you can copy the *.keychain files in your iDisk to the ~/Library/Keychain folder on your friend's machine (in the account that you're using).
That way - you can open your keychain locally - although it won't sync backwards and forwards.  An alternative is to use a third-party product such as 1Password - of which there's an iPad app - as well as a web interface (when combined with Dropbox).
    Hope that helps - Jonathan.

  • Why haven't my MobileMe files moved over to iCloud?  iDisk and Lion issue?

Everything else has matriculated over to iCloud automatically.  But my working files, typically MSOffice files also, have not.  What can I do to get them to move?  Or should I just put everything onto a hard drive on my desk and chuck the notion of online "cloud" storage?   Another way of putting it; iDisk isn't showing up on my computer and is not accessbile via Lion.  So, how do I get my files to move to iCloud from MobileMe, and then show up via Lion as either in iCloud or my iDisk?

Please amend your signature to show you are using Lion - having the wrong system showing can lead to some irrelevant answers.
Your iDisk and its contents, including websites and Gallery, do not migrate to iCloud: iCloud does not provide these facilities. The iDisk will continue to work as before but will terminate on 30 June 2012 and its contents be deleted, so you will need to find alternatives before then.
The migration process has probably logged you out of MobileMe and you will need to go to System Preferences>MobileMe and sign in again.
This article examines alternatives to the facilities iCloud does not provide:

  • I have been using icloud for itunes and aps purchases, but now I would like to create a new icloud account so that my calendars sync without having to plug in ... how do I do this, as my phone won't let me change the icloud account

My husband and I have been using our iCloud account for music and ap purchases only.  I have decided that i would like to now create a new icloud account so that i can sync my calendar and contacts.  I read about doing this online and it looks simple and easy ... and yet, when i go to switch it on my iphone, there is only 1 place for an icloud account (our shared account) and it is greyed out so that I cannot change it.  How do I do this?

Whenever a menu choice is grayed out, that is because you have Restrictions turned on in Settings.  Be sure to turn it off.
You are confusing an itunes store account with an icloud account.  You two can continue using the same ID for itunes (thus sharing purchased music, apps, etc.), but you really should have separate accounts (different IDs) for icloud, since an account is intended for one user to keep his/her devices in sync.
To create a new icloud account, go to
    http://www.apple.com/icloud/setup/
Then go to Settings>icloud and scroll to the bottom of the screen and tap Delete Account.  (have restrictions turned off)  That will disconnect the device from the account but will not delete data in icloud or other devices.  Then sign in using the new ID.

  • IPod Touch 4th Gen. iOS 5.1.1 - Sleep Mode and Other Questions

    Hello,
I have an iPod Touch 4th generation with iOS 5.1.1
    1) RE: Sleep Mode - I found this on another thread and it's regarding iOS 4.3.1.
Is the same still true for iOS 5.1.1?
If so, what is recommended for sleep mode - Airplane mode or Wi-Fi off - or is either one ok?
Wi-Fi is always ON with the 4th generation model running 4.3.1 when it is sleeping unless you either turn off the Wi-Fi or turn Airplane mode ON.
    2)  I only use my iPod Touch on my home Wi-Fi and do not use any cloud based syncing or iTunes Wi-Fi Sync.  I do all my syncing manually from my MacBook Pro via USB to the iPod Touch.  The way I do things is purchase what I need from my MacBook Pro via iTunes and then manually sync it to the iPod Touch.  But there may be times, in the future, where I would want to purchase directly from the iPod Touch.
I recently updated my AppleID with my new email address via my MacBook Pro.  But, I noticed that on my iPod Touch under "Settings" "Store" that it still shows my old AppleID.  I have all Automatic Downloads set to OFF.  How do I update the iPod Touch to reflect my new AppleID?
    3) When I'm using Safari and I navigate to several websites, how do I easily get back to my home page (which is set to Yahoo!)?
Probably a dumb question but I can't seem to figure it out.  I've set Yahoo! to my homepage but I would think there should be or is (and can't find it) a button/icon like on my MacBook Pro Safari to take me directly back to the homepage.
Thanks in advance for the help!

    - Unless you use bluetooth, airplane mode and wifi off are the same as regards to battery drain. I like use airplane mode sinc that is directly under Settings.
    - Go to Settngs>Store and sign out of existing account and sign in with the updated one
    - I have no idea for the Safari question

  • Dual monitor, and other questions....

I'm sorry for these questions if they've already been discussed... with all the back lash, I'm having a hard time wading through all the comments.
    I have a macbookpro.
I use an external 24" monitor along with my 15" laptop for editing. My 15" is used for my canvas.
1: Can I use this set up with the new FCP X?
I use PPro CS5 currently and I like the way it handles media and saving my projects.
2: How does FCP X handle media?
2.a: Does it handle media like iPhoto / Aperture?
2.b: Are projects saved like in iMovie?
I keep all my media on external hard drives.
3: Will this be a problem with FCP X?
Thank you in advance for your help.
    Tony

On my dual monitor Mac pro, the main monitor has the timeline and canvas. The second monitor has the events I think, basically the bin. You'd probably want to make your 24 the main monitor
FCP X handles media and projects a lot like iMovie. iTunes and iPhoto are accessed just like iMovie. You can save media to whatever drive you want although you can't really drill down to a particular location
    Hope this helps

  • Can i use icloud as storage and delete pictures from macbook?

My macbook is currently full. I would like to know if i can move all photos/videos to icloud then delete them from macbook. My fear is the backup would run and realize they were not on the macbook then delete them from the cloud.

I would like to know if i can move all photos/videos to icloud then delete them from macbook
You cannot save space on your Mac by moving documents and photos to iCloud, because iCloud Drive will create shadow copies of every file it stores on your Mac. iCloud Drive is meant to keep all your documents updated on all devices.  (see this link:  iCloud Drive FAQ)  Using iCloud Drive you will need as much space as before, the advantage is that the drive will look the same on all your devices.  To save storage on your Mac get yourself an external drive and move  your photos to that drive. And make sure your new drive will be included in your Time Machine backup.
Before you delete any files from your Mac, make sure, that you have at least one working backup and can read the moved files on the new drive.

  • MacBook Pro 13" Hard Drive and other questions

    Hi there,
I've just purchased a 13" MBP which I absolutely love but have a few questions about upgrading it. I want to swap out the hard drive for a larger capacity but just want to make sure I purchase one that will fit.
I'll number the questions for ease of answering.
    1. Will this hard drive be correct? I know it's a 2.5" SATA but I didn't know if the dimensions are ok for the 13" MBP.
    http://www.amazon.co.uk/WD-Scorpio-Black-WD3200BJKT-internal/dp/B001FBJJQ4
    2. Will the difference between a 7200rpm 16MB cache drive and a 5400rpm 8mb cache drive be noticeable? I can get a 500gb slower speed drive for the same price and while the capacity increase would be useful, I would prefer a faster drive if it's noticeable.
    Many thanks

That article I believe to be incorrect! The author never mentions which Scorpio drive....Blue or Black. The Blue does not contain a free fall sensor option as the Black is available with our without free fall sensor. The free fall sensor will interfere with the Sudden Motion Sensor (SMS) built into the Mac. SMS can be disabled but my experience first hand with the Scorpio Black in my MBP 13 was not good even after disabling the SMS and merely using the free fall sensor in the Black. If you want a 7200 RPM drive and you like West Dig get the Black without the free fall sensor. You will be much happier. I run the Black in several Windows Laptops and it streams fast then the 7200.4 which I also have in a windows laptop and the scorpio black performed better and more stable! I just dont think I personal would not use it on the MBP 13...I took mine out for it was problematic!! If you want a 500 GB go with the Fujitsu or the Hitachi...even the the Western Dig Scorpio Blue with does not have a free fall sensor. The author of that article mentioned ShockGuard that is not a Free Fall sensor and only engages durring spin up or down as well as parks when it is off. This does not sense a fall like the SMS or a built in free fall sensor. Many MBP unibody owner have used the Blue and it has been hugely successful!!! My experience which is very extensive with Seagate as of late has not been favorable. I do not like the latest generation of drives they are producing we are seeing extensive failures (higher % compared to other OEMs). Stick with those three.
If you want battery life, the Fujitsu or Hitachi are very good choices Fujitsu being a little better
For speed the WD Blue is best on synthetic tests but it is a little power hungry. I am sticking with the Fujitsu in real world test it seemed to do better than the others...H2Benchw it wasnt as good. PCmark it did very well. The Gaming, Video and other test it seemed to do well on but not as good in the h2Benchw.
