Using icloud as my media backup

Any help/opinion/advice is much appreciated!
So I have amassed a large amount of media over the past 15 years: Movies, photos, Home Videos, music collection, tv shows, etc.  In total I have around 1.75TB of media.  I use a MacBook Pro Laptop and have Apple TV's connected to my 3 TV's in my home.  I have all my media running through iTunes (so it will work with Apply TV) but all the media is saved to my external hard drive that stays plugged in to my MBP.  I got to thinking how nice it would be to have all this media stored safely in a cloud somewhere that way I don't have to be so dependent on this external hard drive...it gets very annoying having to keep my external hard drive plugged into my laptop at all times.
My question to you all is: Can I backup all this media via icloud or the new icloud drive?  I would love to put my media in ONE PLACE and have it accessible from any apple device and Apple TV.  Also...I want to do this for all my photos but understand that may have to be done through icloud photo library???
Thanks!

I would not expect that to happen. iCloud was put in place to support data from Apple apps and music.
You are not going to get an answer here, since anyone who might know would not be allowed to comment, but i am sure lots of us users have opinions.

  • Can time machine use iCloud as it's backup destination?

I read how photos , music, contacts, etc. get automatically backed up by using icloud, but can I use it for a complete backup of everything via Time Machine?

    Unfortunately not.
Time machine should be written to an external drive by preference and if not to a network drive.

  • Can I use ICloud as complete back up for my mac?

Can I use ICloud as a complete backup for my Mac Pro? Word Files, PDFs, Excel etc>?

No.  iCloud is not a general file/document storage service.  There are some alternative cloud-based services that provide this listed on Roger Wilmut's site here: http://www.wilmut.webspace.virginmedia.com/notes/missing/inicloud3.html.

  • Flawless iPhone 4s install using iCloud

Highly impressed. Ive been through this every single release day from the 1st iPhone through this one, and I can honestly say this went relatively perfect. Yes, there was an issue with ordering on the 7th, but much better than before, and yes, updating to iOS5 took a couple times. Both my devices (iPhone 4 and iPad1) upgraded just fine.
So I set the iPhone 4 to use iCloud. Did a backup of it early this morning, used wifi to synch my phone, and as soon as that finished the knock at the door came and my iPhone 4s was in my hands. Turned it on, it asked a couple questions, had my right number in it, took 2 tries to activate (just think how many were trying to do that all at once!) and voila. Asked for a few passwords, namely email and apple ID, nad then asked me if I wanted to restore from a backup, had the correct backup on iCloud listed right on the screen for me to choose, I chose it, and it started restoring WHILE I was using the iPhone and playing with Siri. About 10gig and 2 hours later, the iPhone 4s is perfect.
Im going to be watching the battery usage, on my i4 it seemed to drain the battery very quickly, but then again I was playing with the OS a bit more than usual, and Siri is so fun. I said "I love you" and she said "I bet you say that to all your apple devices"...
Anyway, I hope everyone elses experience went similiarly smoothly. I was expecting a bit more trouble, but none occoured, and everything was basically flawless. Im impressed with iCloud and Siri. Yet to take any photos, but thats next.
Im sure Ill run into something the more I play, but for now, great job Apple!

One side note, it didnt install all my music, only items I purchased from iTunes as expected, the stuff I ripped myself has to be synched up manually via Wifi and not through iCloud.

  • Restoring iPhone via iTunes but using iCloud backup

I have an iPhone 4S that is NOT sync'd to an iTunes on a computer, but is sync'd to iCloud. I need to wipe it competely and restore it to the lastest iOS and then use iCloud to restore the setting and content via wifi.
I am asking to make sure I've got this correct:
Start up phone in recovery mode
    Use itunes to restore
I'm fuzzy on what happens when the iphone restarts AFTER the iOS is restored to factory? Will I be able to eject it from iTunes before it get's sync'd to that iTunes and then continue on with the phone in hand to restore settings and backup from iCloud?

If you already have the latest iOS, and you go through the Erase All Content and Settings, I don't believe you'll get a "fresh" installation of iOS since it is already installed.  But perhaps it does perform an over-the-air iOS install, not entirely sure to be honest.
But it sounds like what you're trying to do is "dig deeper" into the restoration process to cure a problem?  If so, instead of Erase All Content and Settings right off the bat, here's what you could do:
1- Restore from iTunes, that will force a full download of iOS (if your computer doesn't already have it) and re-install iOS completely.
2- At the end of this process, set your phone up as a new device with a different name than it has now (this is temporary).
3- Let the restore complete, and don't bother loading apps, media, etc.
4- Now initiate Erase All Content and Settings and then select your iCloud backup.

  • Use different iTunes and iCloud accounts only for backup

    Hello Everyone,
Recently I update my iPhone 5,my wife iPhone 6 ,my wife iPad to iOS 8.3 and my MacBook Air to 10.10.3.
As part of the upgrade i purchase more space on iCloud for backuping my photo library.
I'm using the same account (iTunes and iCloud) on my Mac and my iPhone but using different one on my wife iPhone and iPad .
is there any option to use my iCloud account on my wife iPhone and iPad just for backuping purpose.
I saw that i can logged out from iCloud on her devices and logging in with my iCloud account but i'm affirmed to sync all of my personal data (contacts and so on) to her devices.
    please advice.
    Thanks,
    Marco.

    This sounds like misconfiguration issues.
For Calendars, log into each of your accounts on iCloud.com. Check the Calenders app there to ensure each of your iCloud-based calendars are properly shared between your wife and you. Remember, when you invite another person to share your calendar, that other person must accept the invitation.
For Contacts, make sure you have contacts in your account (check on your phone and on iCloud.com). On your phone, go under Settings/iCloud and make sure the toggle is on for Contacts. Again on your phone, go to Settings/Mail, Contacts, Calendars. Swipe down and make sure your default calendar is your iCloud-based calendar.
Hope this provides some insights that lead to a solution for you.

    Hi Rob
It sounds like my problem is the same as yours..... Sorry, but I'm a bit of an iPad dummy so am writing for some more clarification...
My problem is..... I am away from home and only travelling with my iPad, however we have sold our house and my bigpond email address on my iPad is getting clogged with all the solicitors stuff etc, so I really need these emails for my files...
I want to be able to backup these up (so that I can retrieve them later to print out and file) and delete them from my iPad...
I've just created an iCloud email account (I think) is this what you did? So should I forward all my emails to this iCloud email account? And will I be able to retrieve them later?
I hope you login here to see my question.....
    Thanks Janet

To back up all your data you are better off getting an external hard drive.  For details on iCould, read: http://www.apple.com/icloud/.

  • I am using MS Office 2010 and Windows XP Professional, can I use iCloud for backup of my files and documents?

I am using MS Office 2010 and Windows XP Professional, can I use iCloud for backup of my files and documents? I am planning to transition to a Mac so using the iCloud seems to make the most sence.

No, it is not a backup method at all.  If you delete a sync'd file on any device, you delete it permanently from iCloud.  That by its very essence is not a backup solution therefore.  A backup solution does not automatically and simultaneiously delete the file everywhere when it is deleted from the original source.
iCloud is strictly a syncronization tool for using files on multiple internet connected devices.

  • TS4036 I purchased an iphone for my daughter and we are using the same account and she deleted some contacts from her phone and they were deleted off of my contacts as well. Is there a way to use icloud backup to reinstall the contacts to my phone?

I purchased an iphone for my daughter and we are using the same account and she deleted some contacts from her phone and they were deleted off of my contacts as well. Is there a way to use icloud backup to reinstall the contacts to my phone?

    Welcome to the Apple community.
You can only restore them from a Computer backup. This has occurred because you are sharing an iCloud account. ideally you should each have your own iCloud account, that way you can each manage your own mail, contacts, calendars, documents etc and avoid unintentional deletions and unwanted editing. If there is information you wish to share between you, this can be done with a secondary account.
Having separate iCloud accounts, doesn't mean you have to have separate iTunes accounts, so whilst you keep your personal data separate, you can continue to share music, apps, books, TV shows, movies etc.

  • Are the backups performed at a genius bar different than using iCloud?

Brought in our iPhone 4S (iOS software up to date) to visit a genius at a local Apple Store (there had been gremlins running around, blocking screen rotation and randomly resetting the volume).  It had been backed up (or should I be saying "sync'd") to iCloud prior to the visit.
They reset the phone, and handed it back with one issue (rotation) resolved with a kind word of education (actually more of a slight of hand "all you have to do is . . . ", but it gave us enough to find the toggle on our own), and the other (volume) not misbehaving while in the repair shop.  Hope was that the standard reset resolved it.  It hasn't, but that isn't our semi-immediate issue.
When we received the phone back (same afternoon), contacts were back in place, MOST notes had been returned, we were told to pull our applications back from iTunes, etc. to put the phone back in order, and our photos were still safely on iCloud.
Now after having used the phone a bit including taking additional photos (without allowing it to resync to iCloud), are we in trouble if we try to restore things like the photos?  Will they be added to what we have, or overwrite the new photos and leave only the old ones?
Any suggestions will be appreciated (including what I am missing in explaining the situation).  Thanks.

Restoring the backup will overwrite the data currently on the phone.  (In fact, you have to erase the phone in order to restore an iCloud backup.)  However, you can import the new photos in your camera roll to your computer using your usb cable before doing so, as explained here: iOS: Import personal photos and videos from iOS devices to your computer.  They can then be synced back to your phone using iTunes after restoring the backup.
Another option is to add the new photos to a shared stream as explained here: http://help.apple.com/icloud/#/mmc0cd7e35.  The shared stream will reappear on your phone after restoring the backup.  You can then save them back to your camera roll and delete the shared stream.  The only disadvantage to this approach is that photos added to a shared stream will be a somewhat lower resolution than the originals in your camera roll (approx. 3.1-3.5 megapixels).
