Using iCloud Drive as a Time Machine drive?

Hi,
do you know if there is a way to use iCloud drive as a Time Machine drive. I mean, we can have more than one time machine drive, using iCloud Drive would be a nice option for off site backup no?
I Currently use Crashplan for that, but using iCloud drive would be better, as I'd have access to my stuff more easily than with crashplan's UI.
MAybe a third party services offers that?
What do you think guys?

Well I thought the same, but actually I did a new Time Machine backup a month ago via wifi (starting from scratch). About 700 GB of data. It was slower than Ethernet of course, but it worked without any issue.
You must have top-of-the-line WiFi hardware. How long did it take? I don't even remember how long it took for the initial Ethernet backup before my Time Capsule died. It was at least a day.
However I see your point for online backup. That'd require TM to be more gentle. To do one backup per day for example could be a solution (instead of one every hour).
Time Machine works best in small increments. I always advise against hacking the backup frequency. People who complain about Time Machine tend to have hacked it up. People who don't tend to have left it alone. Just sayin'.

  • Using iCloud Drive

Anyone please show me how to use iCloud Drive? I've asked this before but no one was answering.
I can't  imagine after months of release, I still could not find the way to use iCloud Drive. There is no detailed tutorial on Apple website, and there is no reply from this forum.
First, from my phone, I could not share/upload any document to iCloud Drive. I can only share photos to iCloud Photo Sharing.
Second, from my PC, after I uploaded/shared documents into the iCloud Drive, none of the apps (Apple or 3rd party) has access to it.
This basically makes the iCloud Drive a useless feature which I could not find a way to make use of.

    Hi,
Maybe this comes a little late for you.
I had the same impression you had about icloud drive.
This morning I have told with the support service and they have told me that you can't see any document you uploaded in the cloud in your ipad or iphone devices if they are word, pdf, documents. The only documents you can see are those which are done with apple apps. iWork, etc...
With the photos you have to upload them first to your computer and then to the icloud drive.
Hope it's time already for this!
    Good luck!

  • Problems with Pages and Numbers using iCloud Drive on early 2008 MacPro, Yosemite

One of my computers, an early 2008 MacPro running Yosemite, will NOT save Pages or Numbers documents to iCloud Drive from within those applications.  I see the little iCloud Drive error badge next to the file name in Finder after I try to save.  However, on the SAME computer I can save Pages and Numbers documents to a local drive (e.g., to my Desktop) and then use the Finder to drag the documents to iCloud Drive successfully.  Another computer, a MacBook Pro running Yosemite, has no problems using iCloud Drive to create, edit and then save Pages and Numbers documents stored on iCloud Drive.  I have tried "turning off" iCloud Drive for Pages and Numbers in System Preferences on the Mac Pro and then turning it back on to no effect.  I have also logged out of iCloud Drive on all of my devices (which include two iOS devices) and then logging back in to ensure that I'm using the same login id on all devices, again with no apparent change.
Any suggestions for my next steps in attempting to solve this issue?  Is there any way to get more information about precisely what type of error is occurring?  Hovering over the badge only shows "Error".
    Thanks in advance.
    Jon

Found a solution, but it is odd:
On the 2008 Mac Pro, I UNCHECK the boxes beside Pages and Numbers in System Preferences > iCloud > iCloud Drive > Options. Now Pages and Numbers will properly save edited documents to the appropriate folders on iCloud Drive.
    Go figure ...
Hope that this helps someone else.

  • Share or edit Web-Journal impossible, when using iCloud Drive??

I have one device with iOS7.1.2 and iPhoto (iPhone 4) and one device with iOS8 (iPad). When configuring iOS8, I switched to iCloud Drive.
Now I can not share new Web-Journals or edit the existing Web-Projects.
Is there any way to delete the existing Web-Journals from iCloud??
I tried to delete the Web-Journal in iPhoto, but the Link also exist.

You can only delete the published journal in iPhoto on the device that created it:
iPhoto for iOS (iPad): Share your web journal as a webpage  http://support.apple.com/kb/PH3156
And iPhoto can only be used with iOS 7.
After switching on iCloud drive, you can no longer share documents to devices that cannot use iCloud drive. And you cannot undo the upgrade to iCloud drive.

  • I would like to use iCloud drive on my iPhone instead of dropbox but there is no app. Any suggestions??

    Hi -
I would like to use iCloud drive on my iPhone and access all my files. I can do that very easily using Dropbox but I cannot find an app for iCloud Drive that works the same way. Am I overlooking something?????

For individual Apps to access iCloud drive, the APP Developer must set that up.  If it is not an option in a specific application that you use, you should submit feedback to the App Developer to add the feature.

  • Can I use iCloud Drive like an external drive?

I would like to use iCloud Drive to store my stuff (docs, videos, photos etc) but I don't what these same files occupying storage on my local hard disk.
Is it possible to use iCloud Drive to upload files that I want stored there and then simply download them when needed.   Or...
...can I be selective with which files/folders sync and which don't?

What's on your computer is a phantom listing. The only space it uses is that needed for the entries.
That's only for files from apps that can save directly to the iCloud drive, Numbers, Pages, etc.  If you add local files/folders to the iCloud Drive folder locally
the files just get moved to that folder which is in the ~Library/Mobile Documents folder and remain on the hard drive while also being copied to the iCloud Driver servers for access by other devices.  However, those files must be downloaded to the other devices before they can be viewed or used on that device. They can't be viewed or otherwise accessed at iCloud.com.
So if one were to drag several folders of files into the iCloud Drive window as shown above all it's doing is moving them to a different location and copying them to the iCloud drive.  There's no saving of space on the hard drive.

  • Can I use iCloud Drive online only?

Can I use iCloud Drive online only? I don't want to store everything on my macbook pro. I only have 128 GB SSD and I don't want to fill it up with photos, music, etc. I still want to see everything in finder in the iCloud Drive folder, but I don't want it to be saved on my macbook.

Yes I know, but I want it to be used as external storage, not something where I store copies of stuff that I have already on my macbook
But iCloud Drive is not an external storage. It is a common storage that is synced and shared between all connected devices, and it is always available, even when you are not connected to the internet.
What you want to do is not possible with iCloud Drive.

  • How to use iCloud drive on my iPad

    Hi,
I thought there was an app for iCloud drive, like Dropbox - but there isn't

    Hi again bobseufert

  • My newish MacBook Air was just lost to a coffee spill, and I need to migrate back to my MacBook Pro using a recent back-up (Time Machine to external disk).  Can I do this?

My newish MacBook Air was just lost to a coffee spill, and I need to migrate back to my MacBook Pro using a recent back-up (Time Machine to external disk) for a few weeks.  This same disk was used to back-up the Pro earlier, and to migrate from the Pro to the Air.  Can I do this "back-migration" from the Air to the Pro?  Is it maybe better just to migrate the specific folders (Outlook email, Office docs) I am sure I need?

Do not attempt to copy files/folders from a Time Machine backup. Only use the Time Machine application to restore from the backup.
Click on a Finder window and select Help from the Finder's Help menu. Search for "restore" and select "restore items backed up with time machine" from the hints list. You will find these two articles:
Recover items using Time Machine and Spotlight
If you use Time Machine to back up your Mac, you can use Time Machine with Spotlight to recover lost or deleted items.
Note: You can retrieve earlier versions of TextEdit documents from within TextEdit. For more information, see:
View and restore past versions of documents
Open a Finder window and type a search word or phrase in the search field in the upper-right corner.
Select a location to search in the location bar.
Refine the results by specifying search criteria. Narrow down Spotlight search results
Open the Time Machine menu in the menu bar, then choose Enter Time Machine.
Use the arrows and timeline to browse the Time Machine backups. Your search is performed in every window.
When you find the item you want to restore, select it, then click Restore.
The restored item is returned to its original location. For example, if the item was found in the Documents folder, it’s returned to the Documents folder.
Restore items backed up with Time Machine
If you use Time Machine to back up your Mac, you can easily bring back lost items or recover older versions of files.
You can use Time Machine within many apps. If the iCloud Documents & Data feature is turned on, you can recover older versions of iCloud documents as well as regular documents.
Open a window for the item you want to restore. For example, if you accidentally deleted a file from your Documents folder, open the Documents folder. To recover an email message, open your inbox in Mail. To recover an iCloud document, open the document’s app, choose File > Open, then click iCloud to view the iCloud documents for that app.If you’re missing an item from the desktop, you don’t need to open a window.
From the Time Machine menu in the menu bar, choose Enter Time Machine. A message may appear while your Mac connects to the backup disk.
Use the arrows and timeline to browse the snapshots and backups.White tick marks represent snapshots stored on your internal drive (portable computers only). Pink tick marks represent backups stored on your backup disk. If a tick mark appears dimmed or grayed, there’s no backup available or the backup disk is not connected.
For more information about an item, double-click it.The windows in Time Machine behave just like Finder windows, so you can open folders, click items in the sidebar, and use the search field in the upper-right corner of the window.
When you find the item you want to restore, select it, then click Restore. You can restore individual items, multiple items, folders, or your entire hard disk. The restored item is returned to its original location. For example, if the item was found in the Documents folder, it is returned to the Documents folder.

  • I have been using a WD Passport with Time Machine on my iMac.  Since I upgraded to Mavericks, the backup no longer works.  What do I need to do?

I have been using a WD Passport with Time Machine on my iMac.  Since I upgraded to Mavericks, the backup no longer works.  What do I need to do?
I assume that upgrading the WD SmartWare is irrelevant as it is not being used.  Should I upgrade just as a precaution?
One complication is that I have renamed my user since the last time I backed up.

the problem is with the WD Passport drives.   I also have one, and since upgrading to 10.9 I can no longer use mine either.  See if this solution works for you: https://discussions.apple.com/message/23943103#23943103

  • Using WD MyBook Studio for Time Machine

    Hi
    I have a 1.5TB external firewire drive
It has about 500G of files on it.
I would like to also use it for time machine. How do I do this
    Thanks for any replies
    Carlo

Don't do anything. Time machine takes care of building the folders for you. You will see after it runs once. All the TIme Machine data is in a folder called Backups.backupdb. The only thing that is clumsy is backing up the files that are out on the drive natively. But backing stuff up to itself is not much of a backup anyway. Just select the drive in the TIme Machine Preferences panel
You can use any volume containing a Time Machine backup, for regular file system storage, even Time Capsule.

  • HT4901 I have HughesNet with a capped amount of Internet capacity. How can I use iCloud but adjust the time it is on to conserve my Internet allowance and not have to backup my information all the time????

I have HughesNet satellite for an ISP with a capped amount of Internet capacity. How can I use iCloud but adjust the time it is on to conserve my Internet allowance and not have to back up my information all the time?

    Thanks Roger W1,
Yes, I was using iTunes to sync over cable without problems since orinigal purchase in 2011 and using 10.6 w/o problem. There was an "update" in Nov 2012 that crashed the sync service. I went to the Apple Store and reviewed the problem with the Geniuses there. It was discovered at that time that the update included mandated use of iCloud but enough of the un-updated code remained that he was able to patch functions to allow Microsoft Office to still sync over iTunes.
This March (+/-) there was another "update" to 10.6 that totally destroyed the patch that was in place so there was no sync service available between Microsoft and iTunes what-so-ever. Then recently, because of some unknown process, all my notes, contacts, and calendars were erased in both my Apple utilities and Microsoft utilities.
After many hours of frustration I was able to recover most of the information to the Apple utilities only, but those were unstable. At my visit to the Apple store it was suggested that an upgrade to 10.8 might solve the stability problem. That it did but being connected to the iCloud all the time keeps using up all my Internet time and I have nothing left to check emails or do research.
This, to me, is not my problem but one created by Apple. I have searched the Internet and support groups and there doesn't seem to be a solution.
The "aircraft mode" turns off all other communication functions and is not acceptable. Neither is disconnecting/turning off Airport on my MBP.
    Thanks,
    Jay

I used a partitioned HDD for time machine, using a partition already containing other data files. I am now no longer able to view that partition in Finder. HDD is a Toshiba 1TB, partitioned into two 500GB partitions.
    OS X version 10.9.2

Yes, sharing a TM disk is a bad idea, and disks are cheap enough so that you don't need to.
    Now
Have you tried to repair the disk yet

  • I can't get my ipad3 to backup using iCloud.. It times out right at the end of backup

I can't get my ipad3 to backup using iCloud.. It times out right at the end of backup. The blue bar nearly fills up and right at the end a message pops up saying the backup could not be completed.

Tried that.. No joy. Just tried to synch again with iCloud . The bar gets nearly to the end and then stops. Says below it - estimated time remaining.... I'm confused. If I synch to my computer is this the same as synching to iCloud. It's shame it's doesn't work!
