Using iCloud to back up documents from MacBook

I have a MacBook, OSX 10.7.5.
I use Microsoft Office for Mac 2011.
Is there a way to back up the documents that are on my computer, such as Word and Excel documents?  If this is possible, how do I do that?  Is there a way to differentiate between the documents on my iPhone and my MacBook?
Thank you.

*"iPod shuffle is intended for use with a single computer. You cannot load music from multiple computers or iTunes libraries onto iPod shuffle like you can with other iPods."*
You don't have a Shuffle. That paragraph does not apply to you.
*Secondly, doesn't that article explicitly say you CAN load music from multiple libraries onto "other iPods?"*
Yes. Your iPod fits in the "other" category.
For this discussion, your iPHOTO library is a folder with computer files. It is NOT part of the iTUNES library and is NOT "synced." For computer files, you need to configure for Disk Mode. That lets you treat available space in the iPod as if it were a small hard drive. You use the finder to copy files to the iPod. This is in addition to the music and videos, etc. in the iTUNES library.
*I guess perhaps a better question might be, "Can I share an iPhoto library between two accounts on one computer without duplicating files?"* No, you're not really "sharing" it, you're simply copying it back and forth between two computers (users):
1. Copy from User-A to the iPod.
2. Copy from iPod to User-B.
3. User-B adds photos and does "other stuff."
4. Delete library from iPod. I'm not 100% certain this is necessary. However, if User-B did something that deletes anything from inside the rather complex library, we want to be certain that it's gone when the library goes back to User-A.
5. Copy from User-B to iPod.
6. Copy from iPod to User-A.
7. Delete from iPod.
+*A better solution: Buy an external Firewire hard drive, configure it for "Ignore Ownership" (File/GetInfo) and put the iPhoto library there. Both users can access it with full rights and priveleges.*+
By the way, photos can be "files" and transferred via the finder as above (can NOT be viewed on the iPod) and/or they can be in the iTUNES library and synced for viewing on the iPod.

I recently got the new iPhone 5c I used icloud to back everything up from my 4s to my new 5c.  Now, I keep getting a pop up that says Continue Restoring?  (This iPhone has not been backed uprecently because it has not finished being restored. Would you like to finish downloading any remaining purchases and media before backing up, or delete them along with any app date?)
I seleted to finish downloading because I didn't want to lose anything.  It still will not finish downloading and I have tried this several times.
What do I need to do to that I can get my iphone to back up and so that I can install the new iOS?

    Hello there, Brandifoote24.
The following Knowledge Base article offers up an explanation of what you're error signifies:
    iCloud: Understanding Backup alert messages
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4576
"This iPhone has not been backed up recently because it has not finished being restored. Would you like to finish downloading any remaining purchases and media before backing up, or delete them along with any app data?"
This message is displayed if your iOS device has been trying to complete a restore for more than three days. This can occur if your restore has been interrupted due to network connectivity issues or some other problem occurs.
Being that this is the case, you would want to go back to the article it seems you were referred to us from and try to restore from your icloud backup again:
iCloud: Troubleshooting restoring an iCloud backup
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4036
How do I restore an iCloud backup if my device is already set up for use?
You'll need to erase all data and settings from your device, so first confirm that you have an iCloud backup to restore:
Go to Settings > iCloud > Storage & Backup > Manage Storage, then tap the name of your device to view a list of iCloud backups.
Check the date of the backup you want to restore, because you'll be restoring only what iCloud backed up on that date.
After confirming that an iCloud backup is available, follow these steps:
Connect your device to a power source and make sure that it is connected to the Internet via Wi-Fi.
Follow the instructions for restoring your iOS device from an iCloud backup, which include making sure that your device is using the latest version of iOS.
If the issue persists, then I would troubleshoot Wi-Fi using the following article:

  • How do I use icloud to restore my documents that were in Pages? Pages got stuck in "waiting" to update and when nothing else worked I deleted it and reloaded Pages. I don't want to restore everything just my Pages documents.

How do I use icloud to restore my documents that were in Pages? Pages got stuck in "waiting" to update and when nothing else worked I deleted it and reloaded Pages. Everything I can find is about wiping everything out and restoring everything. I don't want to restore everything just my Pages documents (and numbers and keynote that also locked up during updating).

What I meant is turn off Documents and Data in iCloud in OS X. Keep it on on your iOS devices. iCloud will sync documents between the iOS devices and make them available on the iCloud web site, but it won't mess up iWorks' open and save dialog boxes. It also won't assume that you want all your documents in iCloud, which I think is undesirable anyway.
Keep iOS and OS X separate, and use the web site to move files between the two as necessary.
iOS iWork is different from OS X iWork. There are fewer fonts on an iOS device. iOS iWork programs have slightly different feature sets than OS X iWork programs, and the file formats are different. iCloud automatically converts the file format when necessary, but if you make a habit of saving things directly to iCloud, you are limited to the lowest common denominator between the two versions of iWorks. So why would anyone want iWork on the Mac to open and save documents on iCloud by default?
If you want to store files in the cloud and sync them on your Macs, SugarSync is a much better solution. It lets you choose your sync folders, it doesn't make you reorganize your files, it lets you sync all file types, it doesn't convert files to a different format and back, and it stores everything in the cloud, too. Just the simle act of saving a file backs it up and syncs it. I wouldn't live without it. iCloud is best with iTunes purchases and synchronizing Mac settings and iOS files; I woudln't live without it. The two make an unbeatable combination.

  • Wanted to use Icloud to back up pictures and Itunes  - it is running os 10.6.4.  I have an original IPAD, nothing syncs without connecting.  Do I need to purchase operating system updates?  Wasn't sure what 10.6 Leopard is?

Snow Leopard, Mac OS X 10.6, is not iCloud compatible.  You need to upgrade to Lion, Mac OS X 10.7, via a download from the app store...$29 (US), provided you had at least 10.6.6.  You can upgrade to 10.6.8 for free as part of the software updated function, then go to the app store and purchase the Lion download.
When you do that, before installing Lion, make a copy of the Lion Installer from the Applications folder where it downloads to some other location, such as your Documents folder, so you have a backup copy.
For Lion you must have at least an Intel Core 2 Duo, i3, i5, i7, or Xenon processor, 2 GB memory though 4 GB is better and 7 GB free space on the hard drive.
As part of 10.7.2 you end up with the iCloud connection.

  • Can I use iCloud to back up all of the pictures on my PC?

Can I use iCloud to back up all of the pictures on my PC? And, if so, how do I do it or where can I find instructions for that?
Many thanks to whomever can provide some information on this subject. Tony

    Thanks for the response.
The links do not explain how I get the thousands of pictures I have accumulated on my PC over the years up into the iCloud. I have 25gb of storage space there.
Are you certain this is possible? If so, could shed a little more light on how to do it.
Btw, everything on my iPhone is bouncing back and forth to the iCloud and to Outlook perfectly. It's just my legacy photos that I don't know how to deal with.
    Thanks again.

  • To import documents from Macbook to iPhone, using iCloud

I wanted to import about 10000 documents (Word and Pages formats, less than 1 Gb) from Macbook to iPhone, using iCloud. After I downloaded about 5000 files and created some folders in Pages, new documents no longer appear in my. I have enough free space in iCloud. What should I do to transfer the remaining files? Is there another way to move my documents?

I moved files from My documents/Macbook to Pages/iCloud/Macbook, then, after appearing in Pages/iCloud/iPhone, I distributed them to folders that I created in Pages/iCloud/iPhone (about 500 files per folder). Firstly transfering (appearing in Pages/iCloud/iPhone) was taking minutes, then - hours, days and now does not happen at all.

  • How do I share a numbers Document from Macbook to iPhone using the Cloud?

How do I share a "Numbers" Document between a Macbook and an iPhone, using the Cloud?
Will I be ablt to add data on the iPhone?

iWork.com (beta) was made for sharing documents with other iWork users, not really for syncing documents between your own devices. Unfortunately, Apple has not updated the desktop versions of the iWork apps to use iCloud. Until they do you have to use iCloud.com in a web browser or iTunes to sync files.

  • Can I use iCloud to publish my calendar from one mac to another?

I am on a Macbook Pro and my wife has an iMac. She has all our kids activities on it and I want to be able to import or publish (for lack of a better term) the calendar onto my calendar on my Macbook. I want all the activities to be added to my calendar directly. Is this possible using iCloud? Should I use a different method instead? Thanks!!!

Ctrl-click on the calendars button in the calendar window and choose 'Share' from the contextual menu.

  • HT201317 Using icloud to back up photos and shared photostream, why not updating?

I've been manually backing up my camera roll on my windows 7 pc the old fashioned way (copying files through windows explorer) for some time, and have my pc as a whole backed up on a cloud product.
I have this week however learned about icloud and the ability to back up the shared streams I'm subscribed to. I therefore installed icloud control panel and watched my family's streams appear in My Pictures.
However, one shared stream did not transfer completely - there are 18 of my mum's pictures missing - and My Photo Stream has only transferred 70.
Know there's a 30 day limit so given that is the first backup, it may not back up all 1000 as the earlier ones are older than 30 days, but the selection making up to 70 aren't the most recent as showing on my iPhone, so its no that. I took a whole lot together last weekend, one is on there but not the rest (for example).
I can back up manually to get a complete set of my own photos but think I must be doing something wrong if it's missing some.
I did go out after backing up first time, did I interrupt it , which is why there are only 70?  How do I restart it? - given that it didn't finish first backup.
Also, I got home tonight, and the ones I've taken today have not transferred over.
Is there something I'm supposed to do to trigger a backup? ( both to finish first back up, and to backup new ones too)
Given that I'm using icloud more as a way of getting my photos and shared streams onto my pc, rather than backing up in icloud (as I have my own cloud too), what settings should I have on my iPhone, and what settings on iTunes?
At the moment on iPhone In settings/icloud/storage & backup, I have icloud backup turned on.
In iTunes, on the summary page for my iPhone (when plugged in) under Backups, I have 'iCloud' option ticked. Rather than 'this computer', when I change to 'this computer', the icloud setting on my iPhone gets turned to 'off'. I did hit the 'back up now' under 'manually back up and restore' in case that triggered it, and its showing a back up date and time of last night when I did this - but My Photo Stream is still at 70 - not complete transfer, or new ones - and mum's 18 still missing.
Same page in iTunes, under 'Option' I have both 'sync over wifi' and 'manually manage music and videos' checked.
I'm sure I'm overlooking something simple, any ideas?
    Thanks!

Right, they're slowly reappearing. And My Photo Stream is updating this time too.
So, is it signing in and out that did this? Is this what's supposed to happen?
I should have said, I was looking for a way to back shared streams as we all have each others streams on our iOS devices and its filling up our storage, so we want to start deleting from the beginning, but not til we've backed up.
However, if icloud works by constantly removing and rebacking up from what is on the device then, then this isn't the right solution for us, as it would remove the complete stream and back up a smaller stream after we've started deleting...
Did i do something wrong here, was this supposed to happen?
    What should I have done?
How do I stop this happening again?? I'm clearly not using icloud control properly!

  • I recently used iCloud to back up an iPhone 5S to the Cloud and then in iTunes reset the phone to factory settings. Where do I find the contents that were backed-up especially the photo's?

I recently used iCloud backup on my iPhone 5S and then restored the phone to factory settings in iTunes. The contents of the phone is "somewhere" in the Cloud but I don't know where to find it on my Mac Book Pro - accessing my iCloud account just shows all the devices that are backed-up but not where the contents of the phones are.
Specifically I am trying to locate photographs.
    Any help will be appreciated.

A backup to iCloud is not designed to be accessed or viewed -- it is designed only for use in doing a restore to the phone or iOS device. Following has instructions on how to do that http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT203977
iCloud Photo Library (beta) iCloud Photo Library beta FAQ - Apple Support does support storing photos on iCloud and accessing them from a web browser from your Mac (and likely in the near future from a new Photos app on your Mac) but that is something different than an iCloud backup.
