Using idvd to put movies onto dvd

im trying to put some .avi files onto a dvd so it will play in a dvd player but idvd doesnt seem to like my .avi's
does anyone know of a method to do this?

won't work without a third party app that will first convert them to QT file. There are several apps that can do this but for simplicity, here I'll use one.
For example:
http://www.dvdxdv.com/NewFolderLookSite/Products/DVDxDV.products.htm
The latter of which can be brought back into iDvd (or iMovie for that matter).
Hope this helps but if not just come on back.

Another update to my burning problem...in my movies folder there is an img file (states it is a classic disk image-2.82GB) after I have tried burning a DVD unsuccessfully and when I open the img file I see 1) AUDIO_TS AND 2) VIDEO_TS files. I 'control' clicked the file and tried burning this folder onto a disc. Result it seemed to burn both files onto DVD but still couldn't view video.

Been trying to burn a movie onto DVD and get this "The disc can’t be burned, because the device failed to calibrate the laser power level for this media" Anybody know what it means and what to do? Help! Thanks

It generally means that the media is faulty or of poor quality. Most of us here use Verbatim, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden media.
    OR
Your Superdrive may need a clean.
If you have further questions please state what Mac, with what versions of OS X, iMovie and iDVD you are using.

I'm trying to put movies onto my hard  drive but i can't put the files with the same name onto the hard drive , finder won't let me change the name. What am i doing wrong?

Make a new folder and put them in that different folder. Then the names can be the same as others already on your drive.

  • Putting slideshow onto DVD

I thought this was going to be simple. I selected the photos for an album. I matched it with a playlist from iTunes. I can play it in iPhoto, but when I click burn with a DVD in, I get a please put in blank disc. When I go to iPhoto help under Exporting a slideshow to iDVD it says to go to choose Share > Send to iDVD. But I do not see a Share anywhere in iPhoto.
And if I click on iDVD, I seem to lose the settings from iPhoto. I tried the tutorial, but now seem to be stuck in it if I open iDVD. What is the simplest way to get my slideshow w/soundtrack onto a DVD? And how do I get rid of the darned tutorial?

Hi, Kenneth. The iPhoto 4.0.3 updater very unhelpfully replaced the Help files for iPhoto 4 with those for iPhoto 5, which refer to features that don't exist in iPhoto 4.0.3 — among them Share. So you can ignore the instructions in iPhoto Help for what you're trying to do: you don't really have those options.
Since iPhoto 4 can't export a slideshow directly to iDVD, you'll need instead to export your slideshow to a folder or to the desktop as a QuickTime movie, and then use iDVD to burn it to a DVD. Not being an iDVD user myself, I can't advise you on the latter step.

  • Burning movies onto DVD

I have some movies on my MBP and want to write them onto DVD so I can play them on my DVD player. They are played through quicktime on my MBP, if I burn them to DVD will they just automatically play through my DVD player or do I have to do something else?
Also, what kind of DVD format do I need?

RW discs is an option but not all DVD players can read them, usuallt the cheap ones (cheaper the better) can read them but the expensive ones can't.
You will have to try it and find out if your DVD player can read/play them without skipping parts or messing up the sound.
Toast will encode the avi or any other file to DVD format and uses the entire DVD space. Toast compresses the movie using all the space it has to keep the best quality, putting more than 1 movie on a single disc is possible if you drag multiple files into Toast's Video section and it will give you the option to make a DVD menu and everything but the quality will get poor.
Best is: 1 disc for 1 movie

  • What is the Best wat to put Flash onto DVD?

    Hello
I recently purchase Adobe Production CS3 (PC) and trying to
put Flash animation projects onto DVDs but the video quality is not
    up to par.
I was wondering if anybody has run into this problem, or has
any tips or advice on getting the video quality on DVD.
    rocket12works

Flash can export the whole animation as a quicktime mov, for
that just select the checkbox "Quicktime" on the Publish Settings
Dialog and don't forget to setup the settings needed. Also be aware
of the different Aspect Ratios. Flash uses 1:1par as when a dvd
depending on their Region code and format can vary a lot. Your
flash file needs to have the correct size in order to look right in
    any video editing software.
I personally prefer AVI videos rather then QT but if you're
on a mac then go with the QT format.
The quality of the flash video depends on your par and export
    settings.

  • How to burn movie onto DVD???

I have made a movie that is about 5 minutes long. All I want to do is burn it onto a DVD so that it plays like a typical DVD movie. In other words, when I insert the DVD into a computer or DVD player, it just plays.
I tried making a Quicktime movie out of it at full quality but when I burned it onto a DVD, all of the text in the titles came out badly jagged. I tried sharing it with iDVD but it wanted me to create themes and other stuff that was way more complex than I wanted.
How do I burn my movie onto a DVD so that it just starts playing on a DVD player or on a computer?
    Thank you!

It sounds like you have a burning application besides iDVD. You can skip the Export step by using the existing Quicktime version of your movie to see if that helps your titles (right click your iMovie and Show Package Contents; look in the Shared/iDVD folder and drag that Quicktime movie to the menu area of Roxio Toast or whatever you're using). Small fonts with curly elements don't work well; try a san serif font like Arial or Helvetica and make it large.
Converting video into a format for set-top players is fairly complex work for the computer and some of that requires user decision-making. One idea is to get one of the "Missing Manual" series by David Pogue. You'll get lots of ideas and his explanations are decent. A number of people post here wanting an autoplay DVD -- iDVD can do that, but menus can add another level of enjoyment to your project.

  • Exporting Final Cut Quicktime movie onto DVD, Exporting Final Cut Quicktime movie onto DVD

    Hello,
So I've just finished a 30 minute long project on Final Cut Express.  I want to get this project onto a DVD-R (holds 4.7 GB) so I can get it to a television station where it will be aired.  I exported the project to my desktop as a Quicktime file.  The file is 22 GB.  This doesn't seem right.  What do I need to compress this file to get it onto a DVD-R with minimal loss of quality?  I used iDVD to get a 36 minute version of this project onto DVD and it worked great.  The thing is, if I'm giving the 30 minute version to a television station, the movie shouldn't have the interactive DVD title screen at the beginning, so I need to find another way to compress the movie.  Any advice??  Thanks.

    Hi
To get Maximum quality over to TV-Station - I would Copy back to miniDV tape (100% quality) and let them use a Camera or tape-deck to play it.
(BTW - DVD is as standard SD-Video - so HD material will not be any better - in some cases it even get worse)
Else if DVD is a must.
    FCE/P to iDVD
    Several things to know
    • How to go from FCE/P to iDVD
    • Free space on Start-up hard disk
    • Encoding
    • Brand and type of DVDs used
    • Burn speed set
    • iDVD BUG
    • Chapters
How to go from FCE/P to iDVD I do
    • Disable Screen and Energy saver
    • IMPORTANT --> FIRST in FinalCut - Mix Down Audio under Sequence Menu / Render Only / Mix-down
    • Export out as a QuickTime .mov file
    • Select with Mark - Chapter Mark
    • Not as Self-Contained (not important but saves time and space)
    • NO QUICKTIME CONVERSION (IMPORTANT)
This QT.mov file I import into iDVD from within iDVD.
Drop it into the Auto-Play box (top left one in organization menu in iDVD)
Use a Very simple theme - eg "Brushed Metal" (old themes)
Drop a black photo here to make it invisibly
    • Now it will Auto-Start and end on a Black frame - There are no - No Menu choice else.
Free space on Start-up hard disk
I set a minimum of 25GB (for Mac OS and iDVDs temp files)
    Encoding
    • I use Pro Quality encoding
Brand and type of DVDs used
    • I use Verbatim
    • I use DVD-R
    Burn speed set
    • I set down this to x4 (or x1)
    iDVD BUG
    • One can not go back to movie-project for any alterations and then go back to
the iDVD project. It will notice and ask You to either Up-date or Cancel. Neither
    of them will work.
Medicine - Start a brand new iDVD project.
    Use of Chapters
    • I only use a to z and 0 to 9 in naming them. NO other symbol/letter !
    • NO Chapter-mark at very beginning - iDVD NEEDS TO set this by it self
    • No Chapter marks in or within two seconds from a transition
(Way around this last one - Export movie as QT full quality and NO Chapter marks
Import this into a new Movie-project and now You are free to set C-Ms where You want
them except at very beginning - still)
    Material used to build movie
    • video - I use streamingDV (or convert all other to this eg .mp4, .avi, .wmv etc)
    • audio - I use .aiff 16-bit 48kHz or from Audio-CD (44.1kHz) - no .mp3 or direct from iTunes
    • photos - I use .jpg - no .bmp etc
    Problems then
Trash iDVD pref. file and run Repair Permissions - and have a re-try.
    from post ??
May not be relevant, but I had the same problem with iDVD, where burned DVDs showed a green screen. It was cured by quitting Quicksilver and Quickeys as well as disabling sleep and screen-saving

  • Can i talk to someone about putting movies onto my iPod?

i can talk here or an aim but i need help putting my movies onto my ipod
    any help is apprechiated
    thanks

    okay here it is.
1.go to google, search for videora, find the videora converter (thats free) DOWNLOAD IT
    2. start up the videora converter and click transcode new video, find the video in your files from ares/limewire or whereever and click it.
    3. see the thing beside it that says "New transcoding", once you've clicked a file from #2 press START (do not fiddle with the settings they make it so that your ipod reads the information)
    4. it will take minutes to hours depending on how big the file is.
    5. once it is CONVERTED (be patient) : go to itunes click file at the top -> go to add file to library .
    6. okay your file is in a folder that looks something like this: C:\Program Files\VideoraiPodConverter\Videos . therefore you need to find wherever you uploaded your program (videora) and find the file
labelled "videoraipodconverter" (unless you changed it)
    7. once you find this file (in program files most likely) click on "videos" and your video should be there, uploaded and converted
    8. there, you're done and it should play both sound and video on your ipod
okay, so enough topic dicussions about this.
please leave comments where i am too vague or it doesn't work and happy holidays
PS: if you're downloading from a CD or DVD you have to save it in a file before you can convert it. Try saving it in "my music"
THESE INSTRUCTIONS ARE FOR windows XP not MAC
    thanks,

What is the easiest way to burn my imovies onto DVD's?    I want to burn movies as I create them and then continue to add more movies to the same DVD as the years go by -- until the DVD is full!    Is this possible?

  • Using iDVD to burn movie reduces quality. Any suggestions?

When i used iDVD to burn DVD the resulting picture quality was poor. I know that there is a better way to retain quality but can't remember how to do it.

    Hi
If You want the quality a DVD can hold (interlaced SD-Video Quality at it's best) then
    • do not use iMovie'08 or 09 or 11 - as non of then in any way known - can deliver this but discard every second line in the picture resulting in a quality loss (sever to some = me, slight to others)
The problem occurs when moving an Event to a Project - it's here the lines are lost = why they can not be mended in after hand (later).
    • Use - iMovie HD6 or FinalCut any version - as they all can deliver what iDVD, DVD Studio Pro, Toast or Burn can use.
If feeding iDVD progressive HD material - the resulting DVD will not improve - but be even worse due to BAD downscaling function.

  • Can I use iDVD to make a HD DVD?

<<I read that "Mac Superdrives with HD burning ability do not exist. All your
HD editing ends up squished down to standard DV specs using iDVD.">>
So...when I use an HD camcorder, shoot in HD, edit the HD clips in 16:9 format,
using iMovie HD (for FCP, for that matter) if I output them to iDVD or DVD Pro,
they are then re-compressed in some sort of SD format, is that correct?
    Hal

You are correct a standard DVD burned via a Mac Superdrive cannot contain HD content.
This is simply because it is not an HD DVD, there is not the capacity on the disc to store the data required.
You can of course edit in HD in iMovie and then watch the output on an Apple TV / HD TV in HD.
Until there are HD DVD or Blue-Ray burners in Macs and an iDVD upgrade that can output the same formats you will not be able to make a HD DVD.

  • I'm looking for software for my iMac to use to copy old VHS movies onto DVD and old records (digital turn table) in CDs.  Recommendations please?

I'm looking for software for my iMAC to use to copy old VHS movies from a VCR into DVDs and records from my digital turn table into CDs.  Any recommendations?

For the VHS movies, try googling Elgato - they make a number of USB devices that are supposed to be able to do this, but check what formatting options they offer : you will want a device that converts directly into .MOV files (to play in QuickTime), or into H.264 for iTunes / iPods, etc.
As for the vinyl records - first you need a device that will convert the analogue output (phono) into a digital form and will connect via FireWire or USB. The Griffin iMic is one such USB device (if still available?). From there you can use the free Audacity download to read in the signal and convert to a suitable format, e.g. MP3. (You will need to use SysPrefs / Sound to switch to an external audio device, instead of your Mac's built-in mic.)
(Wait - you said "digital turntable" - software already on your Mac? How do you use a virtual turntable to play vinyl?? Unless what you really mean is an analogue turntable that has a CD writer in it, or a USB connection to connect the turntable's DAC output to a computer?? In which case, either use your turntable to burn  CDs, or connect via USB and the free Audacity software to convert the signal to music tracks and output as MP3.
