Using iDVD

Can iDVD be used to make a movie from Final Cut Pro X?

Export as Master File and drop that into iDVD as usual.

After upgrading to mountain lion, the movies/slideshows I create using iDVD playback in a jolting start/stop manner. This didn't happen with the prior os - playbacks were flawless. Any ideas, short of uninstalling mountain lion, on how to correct?

I know this is not much help. IDVD and Mountain Lion are working perfectly for me.  I know many others that use Mountain Lion with iDVD also.
I think your problem lies elsewhere.

  • Does iDVD work with Maverick? This is the first time I tried to burn a DVD using iDVD after upgrading to Maverick. It seems to get stuck at encoding menu stage and not doing anything.

I tried to burn a DVD using iDVD after upgrading to Maverick, first time I tried after upgrading to Maverick a few weeks ago. It seems to get stuck at encoding menu stage and not doing anything. Does anyone else have the same problem?

I did not have a DVD handy to burn but I have just created a small 2 minute video and created a Disk Image and also a VIDEO_TS folder, the encoding worked correctly, so it works with some items.

  • How can I burn a DVD of an iMovie 13 project using iDVD 7.1.2 version.

I have a late model iMac which came with iDVD.  I use iMovie to make photo and movie projects and share them to  iDVD to burn DVDs.  I use these often and I love them, specially iDVD.
When Mavericks came out I updated and of course it changed iMovie.  I just finished a photo project with music on iMovie and planned to transfer it to iDVD for burning DVD.  This is a family project and I want to distribute copies to the rest of the family.
It turns out that I cannot use iDVD with the new iMovie version and/or Mavericks.
iDVD does not contain the buttons that it used to have on each theme in order to play the DVD.
I cannot drag the movie into iDVD.
What can I do so that I can use iDVD when I have an iMovie project to burn it on a DVD.
I can go back to the previous version of iMovie and still have Mavericks.
I do not know, I am lost.  Why doesnt this work without any problems when updating the operting system.  Apple should take into consideration all the previous applications etc when it makes an older computer able to update to more current system.
    I appreciate any help offered.
    Thank you

Export the slideshow out of iMovie via the File  ➙  Share ➙ File menu option as a 480p Quicktime movie.
Open iDVD, select a theme and drag the exported QT movie file into the open iDVD window being careful to avoid any drop zones.
Follow this workflow to help assure the best quality video DVD:
Once you have the project as you want it save it as a disk image via the File ➙ Save as Disk Image  menu option. This will separate the encoding process from the burn process.
To check the encoding mount the disk image, launch DVD Player and play it.  If it plays OK with DVD Player the encoding is good.
Then burn to disk with Disk Utility or Toast at the slowest speed available (2x-4x) to assure the best burn quality.  Always use top quality media:  Verbatim, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.

  • Is there any way to get around having to use iDVD to burn DVD?

Is there any way to get around having to use iDVD to export FCE to DVD?
I've been trying to burn a FCE2 sequence to DVD. A friend of mine told me all I had to do was put a blank DVD in, click on the icon on the desk top, export the sequence to Quicktime and drag the QT sequennce into the DVD icon and click burn.
Well something happened! But there's nothing on the DVD!! What am I doing wrong? I loathe iDVD. i don't want to author. I just want to burn the project on a DVD. Please advise. Thanks.

If you export a sequence at full resolution to can burn it onto a DVD as a data DVD, but this is for transportation purposes only. At full resolution the DVD, especially as it fills up, will not have sufficient throughput to sustain good playback of the material. That's why the material is encoded into MPEG-2 for DVD authoring. If you want to make a DVD for set-top playback it has to be authored to include the DVD format structure. There is no way around that. If you don't like iDVD, take a look at Final Cut Studio, you might prefer DVD Studio Pro. Or you might what to look at Roxio's Toast. It has basic authoring capabilities. Personally I don't think direct playback hardware solutions (except for seriously expensive ones) produce acceptable quality, but that's just me.

  • Burn avi to dvd using idvd

i dont have idvd, i dont even have a mac so this may be a really stupid question, but is it possible to convert an avi file and then burn it to dvd using idvd?
for example if a had a film in avi could i put it on a dvd to watch on a dvd player?

It is possible to put an .avi video on DVD, but it has to be converted into DVD format (which is mpeg-2). Another wrinkle is that .avi is a so-called "container" format and it is more or less difficult to convert .avi files depending on the format (codec) inside the container.
iDVD is fairly limited in the types of video formats it can convert (the latest version is the most flexible). If you have a very specific video you're wanting to convert, and thinking about buying a Mac, you could take it to an Apple store and see if iDVD recognizes the format. Alternatively, try visiting a Mac user group and see if they can be of assistance.

  • AVI to DVD using iDVD cuts off sides of the movie

I have various avi movies and while trying to burn them to DVD using iDVD I have been experiencing the following problem: The left, right, top and bottom of the movie are cut off (imagine putting two layers of duct tape on you screen making your screen smaller and then watching a movie on it).
I have a widescreen TV and have tried both the widescreen and standard format with little success. The only difference in on the standard version I can see the entire menu (in the wide screen version, oddly enough, the screen is cut off).
Is there something on iDVD I can do to adjust the ratio to shrink the movie to fit the screen, or do I have to format the movie somehow before bringing it into iDVD.
I appreciate any advice or help anyone can offer.

The problem with that is the green screen I get if I add it to the slide show.
That's the first time I've heard of that. Thanks for the feedback. There's are two possible workarounds if you want to try them:
1 - open the movie in Quicktime Player and export as full quality DV and use that in the slideshow.
2 - if you've installed Perian on your Mac uninstall it, save the iDVD project as a disk image and see if the green is still there or not.
There's a third way, with Quicktime Pro and an Applescript, to mask the movie so that it will be in the TV Safe area. If you find you want to try post back.

  • Getting extra scenes when burning from imovie to dvd using idvd.

I edited a movie using imovie and got it n the sequence I want.  Then I burned it to dvd using idvd.  However, when I view the dvd, it starts midway through the video, goes to the end, then starts over and shows me the whole video.
The problem is, I don't see the extra part that shows in the beginnning on the dvd on imovie.  How do I get rid of that extra stuff if I can't see it on imovie?

I have had the same problem. I spent an hour on the phone with Apple Support and they were absolutely no help at all. They told me to buy Final Cut Pro. The only thing I found that helped was to export the movie using Quick Time as HD as possible (which takes a long time) and then use that in iDVD, so that the version I have for viewing on a TV or whatever doesn't look cheap and lo-res. My old iMac and iMovie 4 was slow, but the quality was much better on finished DVD products of movies or slideshows. It *****.

  • What is the best way to transfer video from a Panasonic HDC-SD60 camcorder on to a DVD using iDVD?

I am trying to get my Panasonic HDC-SD60 camcorder to transfer video over to a DVD using iDVD.  The iDVD wants the firewire connection to be used,  No mini USB to firewire line exists.  Any help?

iDVD is part of the iLife suite of apps.
in this collection, iMovie is the 'importer', esp. via usb from AVCHD-devices like yours.
plus editor, I mostly doubt, you haven't to 'clean' here&there your recordings
from there you 'share' to iDVD.
you'll notice a loss of quality in this process due to  cam is HDef, any videoDVD is always SDef .....

I want to burn my imovie to a dvd.  All the help info says to use idvd but I can't get it to open.  The applecare guy said idvd is no longer included in new macs, so why are all the instructions still saying to use it?  Is one of the other software offerings, like dvd Cfreator for Mac, ok to use for this?  What's the best one?

Please clarify what you mean by "you can't get it to open". Is iDVD on your system or not? If this is a new iMac, iDVD is no longer bundled with new Macs, so the application just isn't there and hence of course can't be opened. You can still purchase it as part of the retail iLife '11 box, though, if you want it, and it would be less expensive than DVD Creator (which I have no experience with), even though you'll get some redundant applications.

  • Can't burn to DVD from iMovie (4.0) using iDVD.  Can I use another program?

Suddenly, after making several DVDs with this computer using its old version of iMovie without trouble, I can't burn my latest creation...I'm getting a message saying that "You cannot use this version of the application iDVD with this version of Mac OS X."
I cannot update to the newest OS X Snow Leopard, because I've tried and my computer is not intel-based.
So, has my iDVD application has been updated to suddenly be incompatible?? How has it worked before?
(I've tried to upgrade my iMovie application to the current iMovie '11, but my computer is not intel-based.)
Is there another solution to my problem? Is there another application that I can use to burn from iMovie to a DVD besides using iDVD? (Remember, I have an old computer.) :o)
Thank you so much for any help you can give!

You can try using BURN at http://burn-osx.sourceforge.net/Pages/English/home.html

  • How can I burn an mpeg onto a DVD without having to use IDVD or IMovie?

So I've got a few jpg's and mpeg's that I would like to burn for PC friends, but the only way I can figure out how to get these onto a CD or DVD is by using IDVD or IMovie with my IMac. Is there a way around this? Why doesn't a blank DVD or CD icon come up on the desktop once inserted so that I can simply drag and drop my photos and short movies to it to be burned accordingly? Thanks in advance.

Thanks for responding Dave, but this option doesn't
seem to appear in the preferences of IDVD, DVD
Player, or Quicktime. It seems strange that the only
way I can burn a movie is to create a new IMovie
project and and then burn it via IDVD. This is a
huge hassle when all I want is a few short videos in
no particular order saved on a CD or DVD. My CD
player doesn't seem to be listed separately and is
tied into Itunes. Isn't ILife suppose to make
things easier? Thanks for your help.

  • I've tried everything-I still get error during rendering/encoding using iDVD

I have a iMac Intel core duo (2005) with OSX10.4.11 and iDVD vers.7.04, 2 gigs of RAM and 56Gigs of free HD space. I can't burn a 3 slide slideshow to DVD without getting rendering/encoding error. I can't save a Disk Image file nor a Video TS folder. I have tried deleting the iDVDplaylist to trash. I have repaired permissions from install DVD. I have also logged on as new user with same results. I've tried using different themes and I have also tried from scratch using Magic iDVD. The built-in dvd burner works fine with regular files so I am confidant it works OK. This is the first time I have used iDVD and all slides are from the media pane and there are no errors in map view. Can anybody help!!!!

  • Can I retrieve photos burned onto DVD (I used iDVD)?

I lost my hard drive last week and am in the process of rebuilding my photo gallery. In Decemeber, I burned a DVD with all of my desired photos from 2012 using iDVD. In addition to the videos and slideshows that I included in the main menu, I made sure to burn the actual photos to the DVD as well. Except now, I don't know how to retrieve the photos from the DVD to re-import into iPhoto. Any suggestions?

  • How to keep a High Quality Movie Resolution using IDVD ?

    Hi,
When I connect my camcorder to the TV directly, I can see very sharp resolution video (in normal TV screen format).
If I download the same recording to Apple in widescreen format, add music to it using iMovie and then burn it using iDVD, I get very poor resolution when I watch this movie on the same TV.
Would you know how can I do to keep my sharp resolution after burning my movie using IDVD?
    Kind Regards.

    Hi
This is due to iMovie and really iMovie'08 or 09
They are aimed for quick editing to web-publishing - not high quality DVD.
iMovie 1 to HD 6 and FinalCut Express or Pro are the tool of choise for DVD or
    even Blue-Ray (needs Roxio Toast™ and ev. a Blue-Ray burner/disks)
iMovie'08 and 09 discard every second line = less quality very close to VHS.
I never managed to get full quality from them to feed iDVD.
    • Pro Quality encoding in iDVD is very sufficient to my needs and
burning out with Roxio Toast™ as Blue-Ray to standard DVD (max 20-30 minutes)
gives an even better result BUT ONLY PLAYBACK on Blue-Ray player or PlayStation 3.

  • Burning an iMovie 10 project using iDVD

I created a slideshow movie with a theme (no audio) by iMovie 10. I want to burn a looping DVD of this movie without an added DVD theme, using iDVD. How would I bypass the iDVD themes?

    (From fellow poster Mishmumken: )
How to create a DVD in iDVD without menu (there are several options):
    1. Easy: Drop your iMovie in the autoplay box in iDVD's Map View, then set your autoplay item (your movie) to loop continously. Disadvantage: The DVD plays until you hit stop on the remote
    2. Still easy: If you don't want your (autoplay) movie to loop, you can create a black theme by replacing the background of a static theme with a black background and no content in the dropzone (text needs to be black as well). Disadvantage: The menu is still there and will play after the movie. You don't see it, but your disc keeps spinning in the player.
    3. Still quite easy but takes more time: Export the iMovie to DV tape, and then re-import using One-Step DVD.
Disadvantage: One-Step DVD creation has been known to be not 100% reliable.
    4. (My preferred method) Easy enough but needs 3rd party software: Roxio Toast lets you burn your iMovie to DVD without menu - just drag the iMovie project to the Toast Window and click burn. Disadvantage: you'll need to spend some extra $$ for the software. In Toast, you just drop the iMovie project on the Window and click Burn.
    5. The "hard way": Postproduction with myDVDedit (freeware)
    Tools necessary: myDVDedit ( http://www.mydvdedit.com )
    • create a disc image of your iDVD project, then double-click to mount it.
    • Extract the VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS folders to a location of your choice. select the VIDEO_TS folder and hit Cmd + I to open the Inspector window
    • Set permissions to "read & write" and include all enclosed items; Ignore the warning.
    • Open the VIDEO_TS folder with myDVDedit. You'll find all items enclosed in your DVD in the left hand panel.
    • Select the menu (usually named VTS Menu) and delete it
    • Choose from the menu File > Test with DVD Player to see if your DVD behaves as planned. If it works save and close myDVDedit.
    • Before burning the folders to Video DVD, set permissions back to "read only", then create a disc image burnable with Disc Utility from a VIDEO_TS folder using Laine D. Lee's DVD Imager:
    http://lonestar.utsa.edu/llee/applescript/dvdimager.html
Several of our resident experts also recommend this: there is a 3rd export/share option that give better results.  That's to use the Share ➙ Media Browser menu option.  Then in iDVD go to the Media Browser and drag the movie into iDVD where you want it.
If you are using iMovie 9 see also this:
