Using iMac as a router?
Hi,
Currently I have an iMac connected to Airport (connected to a DSL router). I;d like to use my old laptop for browsing etc., but it has no wireless card. I could connect both directly to the router, but it's in an inconvenient location and I'd have to connect the iMac using a USB interface which I don't want to do.
Can I plug the laptop into the iMac directly using the ethernet port, so using the iMac as a router? Remember it's not local file sharing I'm after, rather I want to access the internet from the laptop through the iMac (indirectly using it's internet connection).
Any ideas?
Thanks,
Chris
Chris, Welcome to the discussion area!

Yes. On the iMac go to System Preferences and open the Sharing preference pane. Enable Internet Sharing from AirPort to Ethernet. You will also want to enable Personal Web sharing on the iMac.

Using imac 10.6.5 as router (with WiFi as the WAN)
Happy Holidays,
I have a few questions before I go out and spend the money on an Airport extreme. I have not been able to find much information on the specific setup I have in mind.
Background: I have an iMac that connects to the internet through Optimum WiFi via the internal airport interface. I would like to bridge that internet connection to the wired ethernet port, with a wireless access point attached to it for a few devices in my house (iphone/xbox/etc...).
Questions:
1) Will the iMac act as a DHCP server on the ethernet port to give addresses to clients?
2) Can I connect an Airport Extreme and my iMac through ethernet (I am assuming I will not use the WAN port) and use it as a normal access point? (As to not do any NATting/DHCP itself as it would if it were the router).
Basically I want to bridge 2 WiFi networks (1 WAN, 1 internal, connected through the ethernet interface) for internet sharing and access between the devices. I like the Airport Extreme because it has wired ports as well as AirDisk but all of the setup scenarios I have seen so far describe setting it up either as a Router or Wireless extender.
I "could" just connect all of my devices to Optimum WiFi, but I would like a fast internal network for the remote apps I use on my iphone, streaming, as well as any wired devices.
Thank you,
Jack
1)Thanks for the reply.
I am currently set up in an apartment by work for 6 months. We have Optimum Online at work, and with that comes the use of Optimum Wifi. So I do not have a router at the apartment (am trying to avoid purchasing separate broadband service that will only be for a few months.)
- My iMac connects directly to Optimum WiFi, which has a strong signal in my area.
- If I use internet sharing FROM my Airport (on mac) TO ethernet, that should be the only NAT. The iMac would act as the DHCP server, and the airport would simply be a wireless access point and a switch. (With added support for AirDisk, etc)
- I've set up similar configs easily with a number of wireless APs (From SMC, Netgear, etc...). My main question is if the Airport Extreme can work just like a normal AP would, without all the DHCP management.
I could just pick up a regular AP like http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=44682 40&CatId=372 and be done with it. But I like the extra features that the Airport Extreme has, and I will eventually use it as a router once I have a permanent apartment and proper broadband.
Opt Wifi --> Mac Airport -> Mac (w/sharing) -> Mac Ethernet -> LAN port on Airport Express.
My hope is clients connecting to the Express, should be getting the IP from the iMac, just like a plain Wireless AP would work.
Thanks again. -
Hello,
I am going to need a router for the imac. The Imac will be connected to the router, and a PC with a linksys wirelessG adapter will be the secondary machine picking up the signal.
Can anyone reccomend a router that works well for Mac to PC networking?Only Shapes, welcome to the discussions.
You can use just about any Router on the market the technology is the same for both PC and MAC.
Since you have a Wireless G adapter all you need is any 802.11g Multi port Router and you should be good. You may want to read the instructions you recieve with your choice of Router.
If you decide to make your Network Wireless you will need to make sure that your choice of 802.11g Router is Wireless.
All of the major manufactures make good products, and you will get several different opinions from people that have had good luck with there particular brand.

Australia Bigpond Wiseless using iMac as "host" & Macbook Pro
Hi ya
Not sure how to even ask the questions. I have a iMac (2006) and I use Telstra Bigpond 7.2 wiseless USB thingy (Australia) for my Broadband internet. My partner has a Macbook Pro. Currently we can only have one mac working on the www at once, ideally we would both like to use the www at the same time. I know it can be done, but haven't a clue how to do this. I have tried using Bluetooth to get the Mac's to talks and they kind of do. I have also turned on this Airport thingy but nothing happens. I get the feeling I need to buy something???? I have also just tried to connect the two Mac's with a cable, but this is a bit dump when my partner has the Macbook and likes to be mobile...
I'm not very technical I've been to an Apple shop in Perth (Midland) and they didn't know what to do either!!
Any help would be welcome. And no I don't have cable www in my area it has to be wireless only solution
Cheers
FleurHi Fleur,
One solution to this problem could be to use a mobile broadband router. Some general examples can be found in this web page. A mobile broadband router creates a "bridge" between a wide area mobile broadband network and a local wireless (Wi-Fi) or wired (Ethernet LAN) network. Make sure that a chosen router has support for the exact USB mobile broadband modem and for the mobile network operator in question.
Alternatively, you may want to carry out a few experiments with Internet Sharing.

First, forgive me as I new to Apple (former PC).
I have the new iMac 27" i7 and was told that it has a built-in Airport Extreme. I just purchase an Airport Express and can't figure out how to get the AirPort Utility to recognize my iMac as the Base Station.
I have DSL (through ATT) hardwired from the DSL modem to my iMac. I would like to use the AirPort Express as a bridge so I can connect my Directv HD-DVR to the network, wirelessly.
I've heard that this is possible but I just can't get this to work.
ThanksMrMetrx, Welcome to the discussion area!
I would not recommend doing this. You will get much better control and flexibility by using any inexpensive wireless router.
If you want your Mac to act as a base station, you need to go to System Preferences-> Sharing preference pane and enable Internet sharing to AirPort. -
Is it possible to use an Airport Extreme router with AT&T 2Wire modem/router?
My AT&T 2Wire modem/router does not have great range, speed, or compatibility with my Macbook and iMac. I bought an Apple Airport Extreme to try to remedy my problem, however, I did not realize it was purely a router. Is it possible to use the 2Wire modem/router as just a pure modem and connect it to the Airport Extreme? Would it be more beneficial to purchase a new modem that does not have wireless functionality? I have looked at previous posts but couldn't find any definite answers. Any help will be GREATLY appreciated!! Thanks!
The easiest route to take here would be to simply turn off the wireless function on the 2-Wire modem/router and then configure the AirPort Extreme in Bridge Mode to provide a dual band wireless network.
If the 2-Wire performance shortcomings are the result of other wireless interference issues at your location, unfortunately the AirPort Extreme may not perform any better, wireless wise. It's not possible to know things like this in advance....more of a case of you won't know until you try.
In theory, it might be possible to configure the 2-Wire product as a simple modem...but I doubt that AT&T would be willing to tell you how to do this or provide support in the event of problems.
It's getting to be hard to find a simple DSL modem these days, and even if you do, it will have to be re-configured as a Bridge to work correctly with the AirPort Extreme, so that complicates things as well. -
I currently use a D-Link Router and also have a 1st generation time capsule as use as a back up device. I've just purchased a new 2TB Time Capsule and would like to use it as my primary "only" router just after my cable modem, it that there primary design?
Currently I have a Cable modem with a Static IP address and then on the D-Link I've configured my NAS, Power Mac, iMac and Computers with all there own IP address. I've looked on the Time Capsule I have hooked up now and I'm not sure if the TC will let me do that.
I really should of researched before, but I'd just bought a mini mac with lion server and it talked about the ease of using TC with it and purchased before researching...I've just purchased a new 2TB Time Capsule and would like to use it as my primary "only" router just after my cable modem, it that there primary design?
Yes, the Time Capsule is designed to connect directly to a modem.
on the D-Link I've configured my NAS, Power Mac, iMac and Computers with all there own IP address
You can set up "static" IP addresses for each of your network devices....IF....the Time Capsule is set up to be the "main"' router on the network.
Open AirPort Utility and click Manual Setup
Click the Internet icon
Click the DHCP tab below the icons
The DHCP Reservations box will allow to you assign a specific IP address based on the MAC address or AirPort ID of each device.
Devices could be assigned IP addresses in the 10.0.1.x range or 192.168.1.x range depending on your preference. -

How do I download an OS (Lion) for a used-IMac that's had a complete memory wipe?
I just recently bought a used-Imac (only 5 months old) from a friend of mine which he did a complete memory wipe on the computer. Operating System and all. He had Mountain Lion which is the operating system the computer is asking me to reinstall but I can't because my apple I.D. never purchased Mountain Lion. He told me that he got it illegally which I didn't care too much for. I know the OS is only $20 which I would gladly pay for but the problem is that I have to have OS X v10.7 Lion to be able to download it. I tried downloading a version of it but it had said that I didn't have enough space on my disc for it? By the way, did I mention that nearly all memory was wiped away from the computer. I had 230-something gigabytes on my computer so this didn't make any sense to me as to why it couldn't download 10.7 Lion. Can anyone help me on this?
You only need Snow Leopard 10.6.8 in order to download Mountain Lion.
Upgrading to Snow Leopard
You can purchase Snow Leopard through the Apple Store: Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard - Apple Store (U.S.). The price is $19.99 plus tax. You will be sent physical media by mail after placing your order.
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store. Access to the App Store enables you to download Mountain Lion if your computer meets the requirements.
Snow Leopard General Requirements
1. Mac computer with an Intel processor
2. 1GB of memory
3. 5GB of available disk space
4. DVD drive for installation
5. Some features require a compatible Internet service provider;
fees may apply.
6. Some features require Apple’s iCloud services; fees and
terms apply.
Upgrading to Mountain Lion
To upgrade to Mountain Lion you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or Lion installed. Purchase and download Mountain Lion from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. Mountain Lion is $19.99 plus tax. The file is quite large, over 4 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.
OS X Mountain Lion - System Requirements
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mountain Lion
1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 7,1 or later
2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) - Model Identifier 5,1 or later
3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
4. MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer) - Model Identifier 2,1 or later
5. Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
6. Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
7. Xserve (Early 2009) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
To find the model identifier open System Profiler in the Utilities folder. It's displayed in the panel on the right.
Are my applications compatible?
See App Compatibility Table - RoaringApps.

Using BAPI_ROUTING_CREATE to copy routing from legacy system
Hi,
I would like to know whether its possible to use BAPI_ROUTING_CREATE in my Routing conversion program to upload all routing data from the legacy system into SAP?
It's kind of urgent.
Thanks in advanceWell actually that´s almost exactly what my task is as well.
So what i do is:
- reading the headdata of the given routing (the one which is to be copied)
- reading the positiondata of the given routing (the one which is to be copied)
then calling the BAPI_ROUTING_CREATE while exporting the headdata and the positiondata to the BAPI.
It works perfect for the routing itself, but the BAPI doesnt create any operations while it displays a sucess message and NO errormessages. -
Odd collection of problems with newly purchased used iMac
I have recently purchased a used iMac from eBay (an Intel model from 2006). I've been trying to get it set up over the last couple of days and have had one problem after another. I suspect a hardware problem, but would like to be able to pin it down before I contact the seller and ask them to take (and pay for shipping on) a return.
Here are the symptoms:
The iMac came with OS 10.5 freshly installed. I ran Software Update, which offered to install a combo update to bring it up to 10.5.8. I said yes, and it downloaded the update, restarted to complete the installation, and then hung at the same point for hours during the installation. I finally gave up and shutdown by holding down the power button, then restarted and tried again to run the update through Software Update -- and it hung again. I did a new fresh install of 10.5, and thereafter was able to download and install the update properly.
Afterward, I used the computer for a while without a problem and installed a few applications that I have known to be compatible with both Leopard and Intel Macs in the past. After it finished with the installing, I opened a Safari window and the computer became unresponsive, except that I could move the spinning beach ball around the screen. I left it for ten or fifteen minutes, then tried to force quit, but the force quit dialog box wouldn't come up. I held down the power button to shut down, waited ten seconds, and restarted.
Suspecting bad memory, I installed Applejack and Memtest and used Applejack to run Memtest in single user mode. It found no problems with the memory. (The computer did not come with a disk to check the hardware.)
I restarted, tried to open Safari and found that the cursor was "stuck." I went to check the USB connection for the mouse, when I heard the startup chime and then watched as the iMac rebooted on its own. A screen notice said:
The computer was restarted after Mac OS X quit unexpectedly. Click report to see more details or send a report to Apple.

The report also showed an unusual screen artifact -- a black line that went across it, but was not on the rest of the screen.
I opened Safari to look up information about kernel panics, and found a similar black line across its window. Later, on a different page, there was a blue line -- and on another page after that, various blue and black lines appeared. I restarted Safari, and it still showed odd lines. Those lines were only on the Safari window, not across the whole screen.
I have very little experience troubleshooting problems of this sort, and I'm hoping someone with more experience can tell me what significance the panic report has and how it might relate to the other problems. Like I said, I expect that I'll need to return this iMac (which I've only had for a couple of days now), but I'd like to have a clearer idea of what's going on before I contact the seller.
Any help would be much appreciated!Safari just unexpectedly quit. I don't know if the report offers useful information, but here it is:

I have a used imac and want to add my itunes library from my i pad
Can i add my itunes library from my ipad to a used imac?
It is best to add your music from your original computer that music came from. Copy the folder from your old computer to your new one and add the songs to iTunes.
It is possible however to do it without your old computer. You will have to rely on 3rd party software like MusicRescue or Senuti. Many people frown on this method as it could easily lead to piracy (as so many other things can in this world...)
