Using iMac as Home Stereo

Is there a way to use my iMac Intel as my home stereo? I have an old receiver that isn't working anymore. I just had my kitchen redone, and my brother-in-law (the electrician) put in speaker wires to my deck and in my kitchen/new bar area. All of my music is on my computer. Is there a way I can connect all of my house speakers to my computer?
I am not the most educated when it comes to speakers and amps and what needs to be hooked to what without blowing something out.
If it is not possible to directly hook these up, what is the best way to go about it? My buddy has an iPod with that device that tunes into an FM station and broadcasts through his speakers that way. I don't have an iPod yet and would prefer to go through my computer instead.
Thanks!

Michael
Here are the Spec's for a late Intel iMac.
http://support.apple.com/specs/imac/iMacLate2006.html
Audio
Built-in stereo speakers
17-inch and 20-inch models
Internal 12-watt digital amplifier
24-inch model
Internal 24-watt digital amplifier
Headphone/optical digital audio output (minijack)
Audio line in/optical digital audio input (minijack)
Built-in microphone
As you can see 12 watts for 17 & 20" models and 24 watts for 24" is realy not enough power for a large set of stereo speakers.

  • Adaptor To Connect Intel Imac To Home Stereo?

It's been about five months that I've had my Intel Core Duo iMac sitting proudly on my desk. Question: Has anyone found a way to connect the audio outs to a standard home stereo? (No, I don't want 5.1, just good old 2 point stereo)...
    Thanks,
    Stu

My friend we have all tried to tell you that you are mistaken with your ideas about the audio output jack of the Intel iMacs, but you don't want to believe us. The output port is both digital and analog. A regular mini plug cable activates the analog output. A mini plug on a Toslink cable activates the digital output. Yes there is a 1 to 2 mm gap that is always there. No neither Apple nor anyone else makes anything special because what they expect you to use is the regular old standard mini plugs.

  • Imac to home stereo (1/8" to RCA)

Tried to hook up my new 20" imac to the home stereo with an existing cable I've been using with my ipod. Got a serious buzzing and had to crank the volume in order to hear anything. Sounded like the plug was only half way in or something. Plugged in the ipod and it sounded great.
Anyone else experiencing this? Possibly related to audio out issues?
Anyone buy the monster cable digital optical cable? My reciever has optical in, but was hoping for a $6 solution instead of $30.
    TIA.
    R>

Can't speak about the problem with the audio on your cable, but I can offer some advice on the optical output.
I bought the Belkin adaptor that you can find on Apple site Found here
It is absolutely amazing and I can definately notice a difference in sound quality. The one thing that bugs me though, is that you lose controll of the volume through the Mac. (i.e. the volume on the keyboard and the remote don't work, you have to use the volume on your stereo)
    Hope that helps

  • IMac and home stereo

hi there...i have an iMac G5 connected to a linksys 802.11g wireless router. the iMac is connected via ethernet and i use a pc laptop wirelessly. i want to listen to my iTunes music on my stereo receiver wirelessly in another room. what would the best solution (Apple or other company) be?
    Thanks,

The Airport Express is used for the audio streaming and the control is all done through iTunes. It will work with any 802.11G router from any manufacturer.
There are other options, like the Roku SoundBridge units, but they will not play any protected AAC files that you have purchased from ITMS.

  • Can I use Apple TV to play iTunes from my iMac on my home stereo?

How does Itunes from my Imac connect to my home stereo using Apple TV?

    Greetings;
When you launch the iTunes Application, down in the lower right hand corner, you see an icon and "Speakers".  Select the Apple TV device and iTunes will then use the Apple TV as an external speaker.
You can also access your iTunes music and movies from the Apple TV menu.  With your iTunes Application open on your computer, select "Computers" from the Apple TV Menu.
You'll also need to turn ON "Home Sharing" in the iTunes Application.  You can find that setting in the "Advanced" menu option in iTunes.
Hope this helps!  All the best...and Merry Christmas!

  • How to use iMac as remotely accessible home media server

First time poster, and thanks in advance for any help that any of you might be able to provide. -- Josh
I have a mid-2007 iMac, several AppleTVs and Apple mobile devices, and a 2014 Macbook Pro coming at the end of the week (more detailed info below).  I have a roughly 1 TB library of movies, which are currently housed in an external hard drive attached to the iMac.  When I'm on my home network, I'm able to stream all the movies to all of the AppleTVs, iPhones, and iPads, using iTunes and home sharing, with almost no problem.  But, my family would like to access our movie library remotely, when at the airport, visiting family, etc.
I've researched various options, and am having a hard time parsing through some of the more technical information and figuring out what setup would work best.  It seems to me that although I can't use my iMac as a second display for the new MacbookPro because of technical limitations on the iMac, I might still be able to use the iMac as a remotely accessible home media server.  Running Plex on the iMac has been suggested, but I keep hearing conflicting information on whether the AppleTVs are compatible with Plex, and I've had trouble successfully forwarding ports several years ago when I played with Plex briefly.  iTunes/home sharing is just so easy in terms of setup and reliability between Apple devices, in my experience.  I looked into buying an AirPort Time Capsule, since I was looking into upgrading my router to support 802.11ac anyway (advice on that too?), but was told that neither the Time Capsule drive nor any drive attached to it would be remotely accessible.  Back to my Mac seems like it might work for me to access my library remotely when using the MacbookPro, but not any of the mobile devices (which are more important to the kids), and I'm not sure what advantage a NAS drive would have over using the iMac (although this is where it starts getting a bit technical for me).  Looked at OSX Server also, but not sure how that would interface with whatever additional components I need to get.
Thank you in advance for any help.  I'm sure people have figured out a way to access their media libraries remotely, but for some reason I can't find a straight answer on how.  I've included additional technical details about my setup below.  Thanks again!!

Not really recommended to do what you want as the perfomance will be undesirable and make the experience lousy at best. If you have content you want to watch remotely then simply copy it to a MacBook Air or MacBook Pro and then bring one of the AppleTV's with you. Then you can stream directly from the MBA or MBP to the AppleTV on a remote TV. We did this on our last vacation, loaded a bunch of movies on my MBA, threw one of the ATV's in the suitcase and when we got to our hotel simply connected it using the hotels Wi-Fi and connected the ATV via HDMI to the TV and we were in business.

  • Can AirPort express be used for AirPlay with my home stereo, and to give my Xbox 360 a WIRED internet connection via ethernet, simultaneously?

I am considering buying an airport but I am not sure if it will work how I would like it to.  I need it for two things.  The first would be to use for AirPlay with my home stereo.  The second would be to use as a way to give my Xbox 360 a WIRED internet connection via the ethernet port.  I would like to do these things simultaneously, rather than constantly changing the configuration and being limited to a single function each time I do so.
    Thanks!

The 802.11n AirPort Express Base Station (AXn) can be configured as a wireless Ethernet bridge. In this configuration, it would join an existing wireless network and its Ethernet port would be enabled for a wired client, like your Xbox 360. This configuration would also support AirPlay simultaneously.

You should really read the manual.
"How do you restore from backup? "
Restore.  When given the choice, choose to use backup.
"And how can I check to see if the pics and videos are on my computer somewhere first??"
They would only be where you put them.  What program did you use to import them?  Pics/vids taken with ipod are not part of the sync process at all.  You should be importing them just as you would with any digital camera.
If you did not import them, then they are not on your computer.

  • Why are my movies not showing on my Mac Book, which is the computer that I used to purchase the movie, but showing on my IMAC at home...I am currently deployed.

why are my movies not showing on my Mac Book, which is the computer that I used to purchase the movie, but showing on my IMAC at home...I am currently deployed so this ***** a bit. Also how do I keep this incedent from happending in the future?

No, this is not the case. I know where i purchased the movie and I also know movies cant be added to the cloud such as music, TV shows can.  The instance happened during the dowload. I think that depending which computer is up and running and the bandwith allocated on either network, which ever computer that finishes first is the one that gets the movie. Just a thought. So next time I will ensure my IMAC is not running. I think that fixes it.
    Thanks

  • ICHAT using macbook to connect to imac at home

Hi, I think a pretty basic question but for some reason couldnt get it to work!..Recently been away & tried to get in touch with the kiddies through ichat using my macbook (i have an imac at home)...do i have to have different a/c's or is there any other solution that i am missing?...many thanks

    Hi,
I See you have linked or replied to my post.
I was trying to find out if the names were linked to your current MobileMe account.
A Trial MobileMe Account will not work in iChat if the Trial has run out. (@mac.com ones do)
At the MobileMe change from the .Mac (@mac.com name issue) you could decide to keep an @Mac.com name for your MobileMe Account.
Therefore you could have a MobileMe Account that has two working email IDs but they will not work in iChat (It is the same as if [email protected] was adding the Buddy [email protected] and trying to Video to "themselves")
I think Defcom has made it clear where you should be going for the New Account.

  • Streaming Audio From iMac to your home stereo?

I've just learned from this forum that it is not possible to use the Motorola DC800 to use iTunes to stream wirelessly to my home stereo. Is there any solution to this, or do I have to drill a whole in my wall to run a cable??!!

if you can't use bluetooth then there are wifi devices such as apple's airport express unit that would allow you to do this...
    http://www.apple.com/airportexpress/
itunes will stream direct to an airport express, other applications can also do this via a utility such as airfoil...

  • IPdo Universal Dock /// Not made for home stereo use

Wow, after talking to “Dawn” at Apple technical support I was advised against using the iPod Universal Dock to connect to my home stereo. Apparently it was made for convenience rather than sonics. Funny but the older model (without the remote and s-video jacks) sounds great when connected to the stereo verses using the iPod’s headphone jack.
Looks like I’ll be returning the Dock and Remote….
Here’s my original email to the iPod store:
    Gentlemen,
At the advice of a friend I recently purchased the iPod Universal Dock (w remote)to connect to my stereo. This was based on his claim (which I verified) that the dock sounded substantially better than the headphone out jack (using the Monster Cable interconnect). Unfortunately the new Universal dock (w/ s-video & remote capabilities) sounds worse than the iPod’s headphone jack. We did a lot of comparisons using the older generation doc and have identified that it’s my new dock that sounds like garbage.
Is my Dock faultily or was the old one sonically better? Either way I would like to return my doc for either an exchange (if you believe my dock to be faulty) or a refund.
    Thanks

I recently purchased a universal 5 in 1 docking station that is suppose to charge my nano and also play through my stereo also but when I hooked it up to my stereo I can't get it to play. Wondering what I could be doing wrong, does the stereo have to be on a certain station? Any suggestions I might could try. There was not much instruction that came with it just a diagram but looks like I followed the diagram?!

  • Air tunes wont play on home stereo using mini to RCA cord to Aux port

iTunes see's the base station and connects to it in itunes on Windows laptop and ipod touch but when the mini stereo jack to RCA 2 end cord is plugged from my home stereo to the Airport express but when I choose to play my iTunes through the base station no sound comes out through the stereo
Isn't this exactly what it is designed to do???
yes I have "home sharing on as well"
I can play my ipod touch hooked up to the stereo using the same mini jack to RCA cable whjile on the Aux port of the stereo why not the base station??
any ideas how I can get this to actually work???

Could be a firewall issue. Try disabling the firewall, reboot, and then see if it works. If so I have found that I need to uninstall iTunes, enable firewall, reboot, reinstall iTunes

  • Can you use apple TV first generation to control home stereo without a tv?

We have a 1st generation Apple TV and wold like to use it to control our home stereo WITHOUT A TV CONNECTED.  Anyone have any experience with this? We would like to use our iPhones over our home wifi to control our surround sound system (no tv in this area of the house).  Would like to know our options. Thanks!

HDMI is the only supported method. There will be no guarantee with any converter. If it does work you will be unable to play protected content (ie iTunes, Netflix)
