  • Using iMac G5 as a display for Macbook

Is there any possibility to use iMac G5 20'' as a display for my new Macbook.

That does not provide a direct video link between the MacBook and iMac G5 as a standard external display would.
ScreenRecycler uses VNC and therefore uses networking to share the MacBook's screen to other devices.
    From ScreenRecycler's web site:
Just start ScreenRecycler on your Mac then connect to ScreenRecycler via VNC from your old machine.

  • Using iMac G5 as MacBook display

I have a 20" iMac G5 and am planning to buy a MacBook. I would like to use my iMac as a second display for the MacBook. How do I do that?

Good idea, but may not work in this case, the OP will need to try.
The MacBook has a intel OS and the OP has a G5 iMac so I would guess the iMac will not boot from the MacBook OS becasue the boot rom will be wrong. Of course if the iMac was intel then no problem...
The other downside is the iMac maybe slower than the MacBook, again unless it's a new iMac
    But it worth a try
But at then en of the day a real LCD panel for the MacBook would be the ideal solution.

  • Using iMac as a second display while still using iMac

I work between both a macbook air and iMac daily.  My emails are on the MacBook Air and everything else is on the iMac.  I have purchased the Thunderbolt Cord and am able to use the iMac as a second display for the MacBook.
I would like to know if you can split the screen on the iMac.  I want to work from just one machine and see my emails on the iMac (say 1/3 of the screen) while still being able to use the iMac on the remaining 2/3 of the screen.
    Is this possible at all??

You can't do what you want to do. The Target Display mode only allows you to use the iMac as an external screen or as a computer at a time, so you can't use the iMac and use it as an external screen at the same time

  • Using imac as an external display. is it possible?

hi. i just bought an macbook. i would like to use my iMac as an external display for my macbook. is this possible?

ok, its not posibble but let me know if there is a way i could get around it.
ex. using some wireless software. a way to virtually connect both displays ... i don't know i have seen many different setups. i just don't know how to do them.

  • Use imac monitor for laptop display?

Just curious, I've got a new mac book pro but the screen size just isn't sufficient for some applications. My 24" imac works great for it, but since this is my work laptop I'm not supposed to put these files on my home computer (not to mention the programs). So, I want to know if there is any way to use my imac monitor as a display for my laptop.
I know there isn't just a DVI in port on the imac, but there's got to be a way to do this... If it were a PC I'd say remote desktop.

christie.cone, Welcome to the discussion area!
Not directly the iMac does NOT have a video input.
However, you might want to take a look at ScreenRecycler.

  • After 10.6.4 update I cannot use iMac 27" as external display

I've routinely connected my work laptop to my iMac via the DisplayPort to use it as an external display. This morning this is no longer working. I updated to 10.6.4 last night.
When I plug the DisplayPort cable into my laptop the iMac screen goes black as it should. I can then select dual monitors. For a moment it switches to the laptop setting. When I then click "Apply" on the laptop to configure dual monitors it gracefully switches back to the Mac desktop (which is wrong).
There may be other causes of course. I strongly suspect a 10.6.4 bug however.
    Has anyone else noticed this?

If you applied the update through Software Update, that is the delta version. Try installing the Combo version over the current system. That often fills-in-the-gap for various issues.

  • Using iMac 27in as a display for my pc

I would like to connect my hdmi PC to my iMac and display the PC screen on my iMac.  I know thunderbolt doesn't generally allow this, even though you can buy physical cables to allow hdmi to thunderbolt.  Is there any third party software that will allow that to work?

PCs cannot use Target Display Mode, so you cannot do this. It's more than just the cable.

  • Using iMac 27 as a display for a PC, is it possible?

is there a way to connect my PC (HD 4870 dvi) to the imac 27 to use it as a display?
and if so, what cables and adapters do i need?
    thanx
    ilya

Only if the video output from the PC is DisplayPort. That is the only video input compatible with the 27" iMac's combo mini-DisplayPort. If the video output is DisplayPort, then no adapter needed, you would only need a cable that was mini-DisplayPort on the iMac's end, plus the proper DisplayPort connector for the PC's end.

  • Using imac G3 as a display

    Hey,
I have an iMac G5 power PC and I want to know if I can use my _iMac G3 as a second display_?

You can use another computer as a second display over the network with ScreenRecycler <http://www.screenrecycler.com/home.html>

  • Using iMac as just as display.

Hi, I was thinking about buying a MacBook, waiting untill the end of November before buying one (hoping a new one may be released!) However, I use photoshop and illustrator quite a lot and wondered if I could use my current iMac to display the MacBook's screen. This would be helpful as my iMac screen is much bigger. Is this at all possible?

In general, the answer is no, but you may be able to use Screen Recycler.

  • How to use Imac (2013) as a display for ps4 or any digital player?

shouldI just get a (HDMI - thunderbolt) or maybe (HDMI - minidisplay port) cable?
IMac have 4 USB 3.0,   and 2 Thunderbotls (are the thunderbolts synonymous with the Displayport??)
i just wanna play ps4 on my 27 Imac when my wife throws me away from TV
    thank u

Thank u Alex for the link.
but according to what i read.. its not a definite no no, as u see in this paragraph:
Can I use the iMac in TDM as a display for my gaming console, DVD player, or other device?
The Mini DisplayPort port on a supported iMac can receive DisplayPort compliant video and audio signals. Converters not made by Apple may provide options to convert other electrical, video, and audio protocols to Mini DisplayPort or Thunderbolt compliant signals.
Im not sure what Displayport compatibility is though! or what are the converters!

  • Can I connect to iMac 27" as external display?

I'm considering buying 2 iMac 27" to run Windows 7.
Can I connect these two together so iMac 1 can use iMac 2 as external display and visa versa.
In other words... is the mini display port both for input and output?
If yes... does this work under Windows 7 as well?

I just love Mac hardware, and an iMac (two in my case) on a desk is just such a nice clean setup, with only one cable. Just counted 16 cables for my current PC mini tower setup with 2 screens - don't ask
Just so you know, I'm well aware of Apple's "cableless" marketing for this thing. But on my new iMac, I actually only have a single port, the FW800, that doesn't have a cable sticking out of it.
But Mac OSX is just not a nice operating system IMO
At least we can use you as an example of a 100% legitimate Mac owner of a Windows OEM install.
Anyway... I just ordered 2 x 27" iMac's. If i somehow succeeds in getting them connected in Windows, I'll post here... if not feel free to ask me, in 6 months.
Please do post back, because if someone tries it, then everyone will know if it works. I have seen reports of a PC driving the iMac display and I have done it with my MacBook Pro. I'm still not 100% sure that two iMacs will cooperate in this way. They both have the same cable connected to the same input/output port. Which one is the target? I have never heard of Windows or any PC hardware having the ability to convert a video port to input, so Windows would have to be the broadcaster. You may need MacOS X to detect the input and use it instead of trying to send out its own signal. Hopefully this won't short out the video circuitry on both.
And in 6 months when you are reinstalling Windows to clean off all the malware, you can still use the Mac machine

  • How do I use my old iMac as a third display on my new MacBook pro?

I have both an iMac 2006 and a new 2011 MacBook Pro. I would like to use the old iMac as a second, prhaps third, monitor. How do I tturn my perfectly good iMac into a regular monitor?
Also, within my setup, I have an extra 19" vga display and a new Yiynova 19" interactive pen display. I would like to use my macbook pro as the main coputer and the rest as displays.

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
If your iMac has got Mini-DVI, you have a 17, 20 or 24-inch iMac that doesn't support Target Display. Late 2009 and Mid 2010 27-inch iMacs, and iMacs with Thunderbolt can be used as external displays. Read > http://support.apple.com/kb/PH11302?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US
If your old iMac doesn't support Target Display mode, you can use ScreenRecycler to use your old iMac as an extended display for the new iMac. The only thing you need is that both Macs are connected to the same network

    How do I enable TDM?
Make sure both computers are turned on and awake.
Connect a male-to-male Mini DisplayPort or ThunderBolt cable to each computer.
Press Command-F2 on the keyboard of the iMac being used as a display to enable TDM.
Note: In Keyboard System Preferences, if the checkbox is enabled for "Use all F1, F2, etc. keys as standard functions keys," the key combination changes to Command-Fn-F2.
