Using iMac instead of Apple TV

I've had a google around and can't seem to find any answers that answer my question.
What we're looking at is the following:
We plan to get a new iMac 2.5ghz quad core, and connect it to a tv screen to use as a secondary monitor. However we also want to provide the functionality of when someone brings an iPad in, he/she can immediately connect to the system and display to the television.
I know Apple TV will let us do this, and it isn't amazingly expensive, but is there a simple way for the iPad to connect to the iMac and use the secondary display in a similar way to how Apple TV displays?
I don't know if it's possible, but I thought with how clever Apple seems to be at connecting devices together that they would have some form of link up between iPads and iMacs (other than sharing music/videos/pictures etc).
If it's not possible that's not a problem, but we didn't want to spend another £90 on another piece of kit if we had the ability to do it on the iMac already.
Any guidance is appreciated. Thanks!

is there a simple way for the iPad to connect to the iMac and use the secondary display in a similar way to how Apple TV displays?
No.

  • Can I use Thunderbird instead of Apple Mail application

    Hi,
I like Apple's Mail application but it is slow in communicating with AOL. Thunderbird does pretty well and
will both read and send emails via AOL.
But when I use iPhoto or another application and want to share
a picture via email it opens the Apple Mail application by default. Then I must wait for it to talk to AOL, forever.
Can't I somehow make Thunderbird the default outgoing mail app?
    Ed

I think the problem is that iPhoto won't let me select Thunderbird as the email application for sending photos. Apparently it only will use Eudora, the AOL reader, Mail, and i think one other program but not Thunderbird.

  • HT5312 I have a used iMac 21.5 in that i would like to reset the apple id so when I get updates in goes to my id instead of the previous owners id. Which in the case is a relative

I have a used iMac 21.5 in that i would like to reset the apple id so when I get updates in goes to my id instead of the previous owners id. Which in the case is a relative. How can I do this ?

The Mac, it's OS and the iLife apps are still associated with the original owners Apple ID.Normally the original owner needs to follow the process to prepare a Mac for selling or giving it to someone else. They need to call Apple Care and request that their Apple ID be disassociated from the Mac, erase the Mac and install the most recent version of OS X that shipped on the Mac, reinstall the iLife apps and deauthorize the Mac from their iTunes account.
If you have a bill of sale of some sort and can prove the Mac beongs to you, Apple may be able to assist you. Call Apple Care and explain the issue.

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
If this program doesn't work, open  > About this Mac and tell us the generation of your Mac. AirPlay Mirroring needs a Mid 2011 or newer iMac, so if your iMac is supported, open App Store and purchase Mountain Lion

  • Invalid security certificate for my website host-they say the problem is Apple Safari and use Firefox instead

For the past few days, I keep getting an invalid security certificate in Safari whenever I select Edit My Site from my website homepage (http://annaporterartist.com), or whenever I select anything requiring a secure log in from my website host main page (FASO.com). I have contacted technical support at my website host (fineartstudioonline.com) and they say that this has been an intermittently recurring problem in Safari for years and they recommend that I use Firefox instead. As proof of this they emailed a link to an Apple Support discussion, but it was for Mac OS X Lion v 10.7.4 and Safari 5.1, even though I told them I am using Mac OS X Mountain Lion v 10.8.2 and Safari 6.0.2. I do not get this error message anywhere else on the web using Safari. I did try Firefox and it seems to work fine, but I prefer Safari and I want to know why Safari is not working as it should be. I am concerned that there is a real security problem with my website host and I need someone to explain why I am getting this error message, what it means, and if it is, in fact, a known problem with Safari or is my website host corrupted? Really tired of technical support playing pass the buck or pretending the problem does not exist.

I would like to be able to view my Sky programs through the iMAC rather than have a seperate TV set up in the same room. I have no interest in recording just a straight substitute for a TV.

  • Help! Bought a used iMac (2008) and I'm trying to install quicktime but its asking me for a password and has Apple in the "Name" spot.  How do I retrieve or reset the password?

    Can anyone help...
I just bought a used iMac (2008) from an ebay seller and I'm trying to install quicktime but its asking me for a password and has Apple in the "Name" spot.
How do I retrieve or reset the password?
It came with the upgrade of Mountain Lion but I cannot find quicktime in the applications.  When I try to install anything this Installer Password thing comes up... so I'm stuck.

    ShirlFromNC
I think you're slightly misunderstanding something, so maybe I'll try to chime in, even though everyone has said it in various ways.
Before OSX 10.7 (aka Lion) came out, the upgrades to OSX belonged to the Mac and not the user. Probably there was a technical legality in the user agreement that you couldn't do that, but everyone did. I could sell a Mac with Snow Leopard (or anything before that) by just erasing the hard drive, and reinstalling OSX. Then ship it to the buyer. Now, I was pretty honest as a seller, and including not only the original installation discs but also any upgrade. I would only sell a Mac if I was replacing it, so I always was getting the brand new version.
With OSX 10.7, upgrading was done online, with no disks. So the upgrades were tied to an Apple ID rather than the machine. Recently, I sold a MacBook Pro (to upgrade to a 27" iMac), which came with Lion. I had promised the buyer that it would come with Mountain Lion, but I didn't know that the upgrade was tied to my Apple ID. I made good with the buyer by sending along a $20 Apple App Store card so that she could upgrade to Lion.
So what everyone is saying here is that you need the original Installation discs or Snow Leopard disk to reinstall and wipe out the Mountain Lion that is on your Mac. It doesn't belong to you, it belongs to the seller, and without his Apple ID and password, you cannot use it. Once you do a reinstall of Snow Leopard, then you can upgrade to Lion and then to Mountain Lion. I do not believe you can upgrade directly to Mountain Lion from Snow Leopard, but I'm not sure.
If the seller claimed that you were getting Mountain Lion, then he was lying to you (or being more civil, maybe he just didn't know like I did). If you bought the used machine from Amazon Sellers or from eBay, then you have recourse through the feedback system or through PayPal. If you bought it any other way, you're on your own.

  • HT4759 I have an iMac, iMac, 10,1 10.8. I would like to have iCloud downloaded to my computer.  Does my computer have the system requirement necessary. I use iCal on my Apple Notebook and Iphone 4S. Thank you!

I have an iMac, iMac, 10,1 10.8. I would like to have iCloud downloaded to my computer.  Does my computer have the system requirement necessary. I use iCal on my Apple Notebook and Iphone 4S and want it to my Mac Desktop to sinc with all my Apple Products. Thank you!

The minimum requirement for iCloud is Lion 10.7.5 (Mavericks preferred): the iCloud Preference Pane does not appear on earlier systems - the MobileMe pane appears on Lion and earlier but is now non-functional - you cannot now open or access a MobileMe account.
To make use of iCloud you will have to upgrade your Mac to Lion or Mavericks, provided it meets the requirements.
    The requirements for Lion are:
Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7, or Xeon processor
    2GB of memory
    OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
    7GB of available space
Lion is available in the Online Apple Store ($19.99). Mountain Lion (10.8.x) is also available there at the same price (though it's reported to have been removed from sale in some countries so may well cease to be available generally) but there seems little point as the system requirements are the same for Mavericks (10.9.x) - which is free - unless you need to run specific software which will run on Mountain Lion only.
The requirements for Mountain Lion and Mavericks are:
    OS X v10.6.8 or later
    2GB of memory
    8GB of available space
      and the supported models are:
    iMac (Mid 2007 or newer)
MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer)
MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer)
    Xserve (Early 2009)
MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer)
Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer)
Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer)
It is available from the Mac App Store (in Applications).
You should be aware that PPC programs (such as AppleWorks) will not run on Lion or above; and some other applications may not be compatible - there is a useful compatibility checklist at http://roaringapps.com/apps:table

You are asking several different questions. If you need to store your photos, music, and movies on an external volume, you certainly can. Any externally connected hard disk drive will work, connected either directly to your Mac or to your Time Capsule as a shared volume.
You should not rely upon using that as a backup device though. Although you certainly may use it for both purposes, it is a better idea to have dedicated backup devices for a variety of reasons not limited to redundancy. You would not want to simultaneously lose all your pictures as well as your backup. If they are all on the same device, that could happen. Furthermore, a backup cannot back up the volume on which it is running.
As for adding an Extreme or Express, using its LAN port for your iMac, and then enable Internet sharing so you can effectively use the iMac as a "hotspot", you can do that too, but I am unclear on what benefit you believe this arrangement would convey for you.
An Extreme's Guest network is separate from its Main network; that is the reason for having it.

  • Purchased Used iMac: How do I re-download iLife 11?

I have purchased a barely used iMac 27", which the person said was wiped clean. I had to put in my information and set everything up when I turned it on. It works great, no problems, except when I go to the App Store I can not download any of the iLife 11 software. For instance, on iPhoto it has "Accept" to click on instead of an amount. When I click on the Accept, it has me put in my Apple ID and password. I do this, and then it states:
"These apps were already assigned to another Apple ID, and they will be available in that Apple ID's Purchases list. If you don't have access to that Apple ID and want to receive future updates, you will need to purchase the applications."
Again, it won't let me repurchase these applications even though I know they automatically come with the new iMacs with Lion. I looked for a couple of hours at different forums and I finally found one that stated that the iTunes Store Customer Support had finally fixed his problem after many months. Here is that forum:
    http://forums.macrumors.com/archive/index.php/t-1224880.html
So I contact the iTunes Store Customer Support and they tell me that I have to call Apple Care. That means I have to pay so that they can fix this problem. I mean, I am going to get Apple care in about a month (I still have time), but I would like to take care of this problem now.
I mean, why would Apple deny me and charge me for software even though it automatically comes with Lion?.....it's free with the program! Yeah, it's second-hand, but they won't even let me repurchase it. So, I'm stuck like chuck. I now have to wait until I come up with the $160+ dollars for Apple care even though the software is only $50. I know Apple care is a good thing to have, but I shouldn't have to pay to obtain this software.....or at least put it to where I can purchase it. If I don't pay for the Apple care, I can NEVER have iLife. That's just wrong.
Does anyone have any idea of what I can do to remedy this situation without having to pay for Apple Care right now?

I gave the forums a read. It seems like you have 2 options. You can either spend a lot of time on the phone trying to sort it out or you could buy the retail DVD version.
You can grab it for around 25 bucks on Amazon. I'm really sorry that this is not the answer you are looking for but it is probably the only way besides spending time with Apple.
You could always e-mail them with your situation. They may be able to assist you.
Sorry I could not be of more help.

  • HELP!!!!! I CANNOT RE-INSTALL LION ON A USED IMAC!!!!!!!!!!

Without being vulgar, I am EXTREMELY ANGRY right now because of this as a used iMac I just purchased is a BRICK thanks to Apple and their greedy big brother B.S.
I purhcased a used iMac with OS X Lion pre-installed by the former owner. I do not have the original Leopard discs that originally came with the mac.
I NEED TO DO A CLEAN INSTALL OF LION. I do not want to get into a debate as to why / why not I just want to do a clean install.
I CANNOT RE-INSTALL FROM THE RECOVERY PARTITION because it says this install of Lion was not purchased with my Apple Account.
I CANNOT DOWNLOAD AND PURCHASE LION MYSELF because the App store says Lion is already installed.
THERE IS NO WAY WHATSOEVER FOR ME TO DO A CLEAN INSTALL OF LION NOW.
Apple has become the absolute worst company in the world because of the way they treat their customers.
I honestly don't even CARE about paying another $30 to them for an OS that was ALREADY PURCHASED so that I can do what I want with it but they WILL NOT EVEN LET ME DO THAT!!!!
What the **** am I supposed to do now?  I literally have a BRICK that I cannot use until I am able to do a clean install of the OS and set it up the way I want to.
    PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE HELP!!!!!

Thanks. I actually got to the step of making my bootable DVD and it is in the process right now (had to set the speed to 2x because it kept failing LOL)...
I am about to find out the answer but if I boot into the Recovery HD partition on the lion install I am trying to over-write will I be able to run Disk Utility on that partition to wipe the main partition of the drive?
I don't have a clone but I have a 4GB USB drive I can probably make into a bootable drive and I have an external hard drive (the internal drive from my old G5 tower in a case) hooked up that still boots into Tiger I believe. I never changed any files on it when I yanked it out of my old tower when it died and I sold it (I back up some files to it here and there but keep it plugged in to access old files until I get my lazy but motivated to back it all up and re-format it).
I vaguely remember booting into it by mistake on my macbook pro when I had it plugged in before but I could be mistaken.
I think in a worst case scenario I could boot from that drive and use its disk utility to wipe my iMac clean and then boot from the Lion DMG to install a factory-clean install.
Yes, I am not trying to over-write the current Lion install on the machine. I made a mistake somewhere along the way when I was renaming the primary user account and associated home directory and rather than piddle with it, since the lion install is completely clean with no software or anything else I wanted to keep I THOUGHT it would be faster to just do a fresh out of the box installation.
I've done this in the past on my other macs when it made sense and didn't interrupt my workflow and I used to do it routinely on my Windows boxes just to get a fresh start and weed out the adware etc.
I just have a thing about using someone else's computer from where they left off vs. having a fresh out of the box install where I know that everything is clean and if any problems arise they are my fault instead of the previous owner :-)
Thanks for the info. I will have to repay in kind if I see some posts up here I can answer for people once this is over!

  • Using iMac as Home Stereo

Is there a way to use my iMac Intel as my home stereo? I have an old receiver that isn't working anymore. I just had my kitchen redone, and my brother-in-law (the electrician) put in speaker wires to my deck and in my kitchen/new bar area. All of my music is on my computer. Is there a way I can connect all of my house speakers to my computer?
I am not the most educated when it comes to speakers and amps and what needs to be hooked to what without blowing something out.
If it is not possible to directly hook these up, what is the best way to go about it? My buddy has an iPod with that device that tunes into an FM station and broadcasts through his speakers that way. I don't have an iPod yet and would prefer to go through my computer instead.
    Thanks!

    Michael
Here are the Spec's for a late Intel iMac.
    http://support.apple.com/specs/imac/iMacLate2006.html
    Audio
    Built-in stereo speakers
    17-inch and 20-inch models
    Internal 12-watt digital amplifier
    24-inch model
    Internal 24-watt digital amplifier
    Headphone/optical digital audio output (minijack)
Audio line in/optical digital audio input (minijack)
    Built-in microphone
As you can see 12 watts for 17 & 20" models and 24 watts for 24" is realy not enough power for a large set of stereo speakers.

  • Wiping a used iMac with missing install discs

    Hello all,
I am getting a used iMac from my brother within the next month or so.  He has installed alot of 'junk' on it that I would like to remove.  Preferably I would like to completely wipe the hard drive and start from scratch.
Currently it is running 10.6.8 but it does not have the original install discs that came with it when purchased new.  Am I going to have a problem reinstalling the OS without the cds and what would everyone recommend as the best thing to wipe the drive?
I am very familiar with doing this type of thing on a PC, but I am much less experienced with Macs.
    thanks in advance.

Phone AppleCare and order replacement disks; if the computer originally shipped with 10.6.2 or earlier, a retail Mac OS X 10.6 DVD can be used instead(they're available in the online Apple Store), but won't install iLife.
