Using Imac to view cable tv

I have space for one display in my space challenged abode.  I love the 27" imac and would like to connect it to my cable TV so I can take advantage of the killer display quality on the Imac.  How do I do that?

A usb tuner is the most common way to do this.  Take a look at the products offered by Elgato.

  • TS4080 Try to use iMac with Thunderbolt cable as a display and it goes black

For work I have a MacBook Pro 15" Late 2011. I connected a Thunderbolt cable to both the MacBook Pro and iMac. When I press Command F2 to use the iMac as my main screen, the iMac just goes dark. No screen at all. I can only get out of using Command F2.
What am I missing. How can I used my iMac as external display for my MacBook Pro.
    Thanks.

All firmware current on that late 2011 MacBook Pro? This EFI firmware update addresses Thunderbolt target display mode, and other issues.

Having problems connecting iMac(late 2006) running 10.7.5 to a Samsung Flat Screen TV using separate audio/speaker cable and HDMI standard cable, mini-DVI to HDMI video converter.  TV displays generic Apple galaxy background and "some" windows (e.g. screen resolution choices).   It does not show Mail or Safari menus.  System preferences'  display "gathered" the Samsung and chose its resolution.  I did not find a way to select the Samsung as my display.
In addition to having old hardware, we have Verizon FIOS providing internet and TV access.  Is there any way to make this work for us?  We would like to stream video (Netflix) and view shows from the Web.  Do we need Apple TV to do this?  Or is it not possible with our old iMac?  My husband thinks that our Airport could be a factor.
    Thank you

Lately, I have been seeing a lot of posts with users trying to use their Macs/iMacs to mirror their streaming video from their Macs to an HDTV.
There are, actually, many alternatives to choose from than just from a Mac.
You need to have or invest in a WiFi capable router for all of these examples.
Apple TV only integrates with WiFi and newer Mac hardware. So, if you want to have total integrated experience, if you have a 2011 Mac or newer, you might as well pay the $100 for the AppleTV box.
If you have a older Mac, like I have noticed many users do, then you have other options.
If you want to elimate long cable clutter and having your Mac at the mercy of your TV all of the time,  you can still use the AppleTV box independently or purchase cheaper alternative media streaming boxes from Roku, Sony, Boxee or any number of electronics manufacturers that now have media streaming boxes and media streaming capability built into DVD/Blu-ray players.
These eliminate long cable clutter by being close to the HDTV where shorter, less expensive cables can be used.
Another alternative for iPad users is to use an iPad with the USB/HDMI video adapter and use your iPad as the streaming box. This ties up your iPad in much the same way as it does with your Mac, but again the iPad can be close to the TV and use minimal cables to the TV.
Another alternative to is to use a combination of an iPad and your Mac to stream content that is only available to stream online from a computer. In this case, you can use a desktop remote app on your iPad and Mac. A good and cheap Desktop Remote app is Splashtop Remote. This allows you to completely connect your iPad remotely, over Wifi, to your iMac desktop. The app streams both video and sound to the iPad which is still connected to your HDTV. The resultant stream video picture will be smaller than the size of your HDTV, but it will still be plenty large enough to watch. Again, if you own a iPad and an Intel Mac, this method also allows minimal cabling to the TV.

  • IMac to view live cable?

I'm a smoker so I spend a great deal of time in my garage with my late 2012 21" iMac, puffing away while my Theater Room 110" projection screen goes unwatched.  I have cable, a strong WiFi network,  two AppleTV devices (one original model with the hard drive, the second is about 3 years old), and a 55" Samsung Smart TV with "sharing".  I would like to be able to watch ANY broadcast available to me thru my cable service wirelessly on my iMac.  TWC cable offers some live programming but not local broadcasts and many other sporting events available to me inside.  I don't smoke inside so I would like to be able to view any broadcasts on my iMac.
Does anyone have a solution?  Thanks in advance for posting specific "how to" information.

    Look into Elgato products.

  • How to use Migration Assistant when trying to transfer from MacBook to a new iMac via Ethernet cable

I've been trying to transfer data from my MacBook to my new iMac via Ethernet cable and I get to the point of the transfer starting. Then on my iMac the Migration Assistant shuts down and takes me back to my desktop. Any ideas on why this keeps happening?

Start over, restoring the OS on the new machine, and follow the steps outlined in  Pondini's Setup New Mac guide using the Setup Assistant.

I transferred files and photos from MacBook to iMac via ethernet cable and using migration assistant. However every time I transferred, it created a separate user and it transferred all files and photos again and again. So now I have 3 users accounts with all files and photos saved 3 times on same iMac !! Any idea how to avoid this ?

Yes, you ran into a very understandable problem.
When you use Migration Assistant, it cannot over-write the account that you happen to be using at the time. Upon migrating accounts, it will tell you that it is going to create a new one, but that message is easy to miss.
If you have three identical accounts, log in to the account you want to keep, and delete the redundant ones in System Preferences > Users & Groups.
Now that you know, the easiest way to migrate accounts is to use Setup Assistant when you first get a new Mac. That eliminates any possibility for this to occur, but most people are so eager to use their new Mac that they elect to migrate later.
That's OK too, but in that case you would want to create a temporary account whose sole purpose is to run Migration Assistant so that you may migrate your old one with an identical name. Be sure to give the new account Administrator privileges. When that finishes you would log in to the newly migrated account, and delete the temporary account.

Make sure both computers are turned on and awake.
Connect a male-to-male Mini DisplayPort or ThunderBolt cable to each computer.
Press Command-F2 on the keyboard of the iMac being used as a display to enable TDM.
Note: In Keyboard System Preferences, if the checkbox is enabled for "Use all F1, F2, etc. keys as standard functions keys," the key combination changes to Command-Fn-F2.

  • Dual Monitor Setup/Home Network/Sync--11" MBA & 21.5" iMac via Thuderbolt cable?

11" MBA & 21.5" iMac both purchased in August 2011 running Lion
Is it possible to setup my MBA & iMac where they will sync?  I have them connected via thinderbolt and want to be able to connect when I get home and sync all my folders [notes, cases, papers, etc...]?
If this is not possible is there a way to transfer files between my two machines using the Thunderbolt cable?  I ask because even though my MBA has a Thunderbolt port, there is not "Fire Wire" option under "System Preferences →Network" like there is on my iMac?
In a perfect world I want to be able to hook up my MBA & iMac via Thunderbolt cable, have them both controlled by my Magic Mouse & Keyboard I use with my iMac as dual monitors and be able to transfer files back and forth freely.  I understand this may be a lot to ask but thought I should throw it out there just in case there was a way and I was not doing something right.
I appreciate all the help by everyone in the Apple Commun ity

    OK great info!
I found 2 possible ethernet to USB adapters:
By "Plugable":  USB 2.0 to ethernet LAN wired network adapter - seems this will work, but I'll contact Plugable.
    2. Apple USB Ethernet Adapter
Easily connect your MacBook Air computer to an Ethernet network with the Apple USB Ethernet Adapter. Small and light, it connects to the USB 2.0 port of your MacBook Air and provides an RJ-45 connector that supports 10/100BASE-T performance.  BUT NOT SURE IF THIS WILL WORK ON ANYTHING BUT a MacBook Air…
    One person commented:
This little gem used to be the device of choice for adding a second Ethernet interface to a Mac Mini Server and I'd been using one that way for about a year. After doing a software update to 10.6.6 it stopped working. Forewarned is forearmed – it appears that Apple is finally enforcing the MacBook Air system requirement.
    Thanks for any additional comments.

  • Use imac as second monitor

I understand this can be done in some previous generations, and am just not sure whether it works in my situation.
I have a MacBook Pro (2009) and a brand new iMac 27" (2011). It seems that MBP has a mini displayport and iMac has 2 thunderbolt ports. I am curious whether I can use iMac as second monitor for my MBP. If possible, which cable should I use, a mini displayport-to-mini displayport cable from Belkin or thunderbolt-to-thunderbolt cable from Apple.

You can't except through a product such as ScreenRecycler. The iMac's Thunderbolt port won't accept video from a non-Thunderbolt source.

  • Using iMac 27" as HD TV display?

I would like to use my iMac as a display for a PS3. I am just wondering this act has been found to be damaging to the display or iMac itself. Is anyone currently doing this and has had any problems, or does it work just fine and I am over worried? If currently doing it, what product are you using to get HDMI into the iMac?
    Thanks in advance

I realize this thread is a bit old, but I was looking into how macs work while being used as an HDTV. I haven't found the answer here, but that last post sounds a bit crazy.
Why couldn't you just use a mini-DP-to-DVI adapter with a DVI-to-HDMI cable? HDMI and DVI are signal-compatible, so you don't need any converter boxes or anything like that. I've used HDMI-to-DVI cables plenty of times to hook up my mac mini to my projector (DVI-to-HDMI) or to hook up my PS3 to my computer monitor (HDMI-to-DVI). That must be loads cheaper than a $150 adapter and I can't imagine why it wouldn't work, unless there's something to do with HDCP.
However, as I pointed out, my old Samsung monitor could handle blu-rays and games going from a PS3's HDMI-ouput and coming through its DVI port. I can't imagine the iMac monitor mode would be less capable than a dedicated LCD monitor that's years older than it.

  • Using TV to view slideshow

Help! Can anyone advise where I may be going wrong? I'm trying to view a photo slideshow on my TV using the Component AV cable, but all I get is a blank TV screen.
I've got a digital TV (so I don't think that's the problem), I've connected the blue, green and red VIDEO wires into the back of the TV into the corresponding sockets (labelled "Component") and connected up the AUDIO wires as well. I've turned the iPhone on, selected a slideshow and all I get is a blank TV. And yes, I have turned on the TV!!!!
I've tried switching between PAL and NTSC (in the "TV Out" menu under "Settings") but that doesn't seem to make any difference.
    Can anyone help?
    Thank you
    MPP35

You can indeed view a photo slideshow from your iPhone on a TV.
Connect you iPhone to your TV using the appropriate cable (component AV in your case). Make sure your TV is set to the correct input (AV4 on my TV). Switch on the iPhone and select the Photos app. Select the album you wish to view and tap the Play symbol at the bottom of the screen. The slideshow should now appear on your TV screen.
As far as settings go, mine are as follows:
Settings - iPod - TV Out
    Widescreen ON
TV Signal PAL (I live in a PAL region).
The above works for me. Possible suggestions as to why it's not working for you:
Have you got the correct cable?
Is it plugged into the correct sockets on your TV?
Have you actually tapped play? In my experience still photos don't show up on the TV but the slideshow does.
Sorry I can't be of any more help. Good luck.
    Patch
