Using iMac with wireless printers, scanners.

Hello. I am not sure how the wireless system works and wonder how I would hook up a wireless printer and/or scanner. Would I require a router to do this.
Any comments on how wireless works, etc would be appreciated.

There's latency and there's bandwidth. Bandwidth refers to how many bits per second flow through a communication channel, and latency refers to the delay in putting information or taking information off a channel. An analogy might be a highway with a speed limit of 60 mph. That's the bandwidth, cars (packets of information) have a top speed that puts a cap on traffic flow. In practice though, people drive different distances (routing information through network hardware), and need time to merge (encrypt/decrypt wireless data packets), which adds delays and slows down how quickly a given amount of information takes to travel from point to point. That extra time is latency. Wireless network connections have a certain amount of overhead that slows things down. The individual packets of information travel quickly, but they tend to stall a little bit on transmission and reception, which makes the realized throughput slower.
Now, your wireless connection, assuming you're using 802.11n (the fastest standard) will top out at 144 Mbps under the best conditions. Your USB2 cable connection will top out at 480 Mbps. Both have different amounts of overhead in operating, so in practice, you'll find USB2 only about 2 - 2.5x as fast as WiFi, but that might be annoying if you're doing something like printing full-color brochures.
While a wireless router, like an Apple AirPort or Time Capsule, might simplify the setup and permit you to add other computers / guests later, it's not strictly necessary. You can configure your Mac to create an "ad hoc" wireless network simply by turning on wireless networking on your Mac and selecting "Create Network..." from the AirPort menu. Once the network is created, you can turn on your printer and give the Mac and the printer a few seconds to find each other. After that, you can add the printer in the printer preferences.
As far as the scanner sharing goes... There are different means of sharing scanners over a network. In order for it to work, the manufacturer has to design the printer's on-board software to support them. Unfortunately, that's still not all that common, and it's rather hard to tell from the labeling on the package. You're best off doing some research to find a scanner that supports it. The alternative, of course, is to plug a computer into it and use the computer to share the scanner. Both OS X and Linux are very good at that (Linux is a little tricky to setup for this). There are some cases where Windows machines can share scanners with Macs, but that is something that's also kind of dodgy.

  • How to use assert with wireless toolkit?

    Hi,
I am trying to find out how to use assert with wireless toolkit. I have found that I need to pass "-source 1.4" to the java compiler. But I can't find any documentation on how to do it.
    I'm using J2ME Wireless Toolkit 2.2.
    thanks
    Ludde

Here's a quote from an article on Java World at http://www.javaworld.com/javaworld/jw-11-2001/jw-1109-assert.html
"To support the new assertion facility in J2SE 1.4, the Java platform adds the keyword assert to the language, an AssertionError class, and a few additional methods to java.lang.ClassLoader."
So I really think it's part of 1.4.

I recently purchased a used imac with os 10.6 The problem I am having the admin in accounts in system preferences I would like to change so I can download some items I have tried different things  to do this but I cannot figure it out. thanks in advance.

Thats the problem I bought it from a very large thrift store. i went back asked the person where I bought the computer he said we can not give you the password. I thought buying it there was a good idea because not only was it a nice deal but it was like I was maknig a donation. I know that i messed up because i do not have the installation disk. I bought it without thinking. Until recently I was still using an old G4 9.0 os. I guess you can say I have been out of the loop for a while.

Does anyone know if OS X 10.6 is comparable with wireless printers?

If you mean compatible, in lieu of comparable, and if you mean WiFi for wireless printers? The answer is yes, if you have a WiFi network for it to join.

  • Can I use iMac as wireless access point?

My network equipment: ADSL modem (which has no integrated wireless) with Buffalo AirStation (802.11b) wireless access point
I have had a reasonably stable broadband situation for a long time (hence the ancient equipment!) and have been able to access the internet via my ADSL modem/ethernet router using ethernet wires from my iMac G5, and two desktop PCs running Linux and Windows. I have also been able to access via the wireless Buffalo Airstation on various laptops over the years. My wife's brand new MacBook has been connecting wirelessly for a couple of weeks.
    Until last night...
Then the AirPort signal dropped to zero and a neighbour's network was suggested as the network I need. I looked at the Buffalo Airstation and there was a flashing red light (and flashing green ones as well). Being an experienced chap I turned it off and turned it back on! For about five minutes the Airport signal was back. Then it disappeared with flashing lights as before. Repeated a few times with no change...
I don't know if the problem is related to the neighbour's wireless signal or not but I decided that it could be the AirStation getting flaky so I tried creating a network on the iMac with a view to sharing its wired connection.
I can log on to this iMac network from the MacBook and I have changed the Systems Preferences to share the connection on the iMac but the MacBook says it is not connected to the internet. Anyone got any ideas what I might be doing wrong? Should I be entering the ADSL modem router in the internet connection details (which is what I have done) or should I be entering something else?
Is what I am trying to do even possible? I haven't found any exact parallels in the documentation or the forums...
    Any help greatly appreciated!

Does the Buffalo AirStation allow you to change the channel being used?
You can share an Internet connection over Ethernet to other computers using Airport. You set it up in System Preferences Sharing pane Internet tab (if using Tiger). On the MacBook, you should just use the default +Configure Using DHCP+ setting. Be sure you clicked to Start the sharing on the iMac. On the MacBook, be sure you select the wireless network that is the iMac's name.

  • Using iMac with KVM switch

    Hello --
Can someone tell me if I purchased a new iMac with either the corded or cordless keyboard, could I hook up the keyboard, mouse, and monitor to a KVM switch and use the keyboard, mouse, and monitor with a PC? The KVM switch uses USB for the keyboard/mouse input.
I have to use the PC for work, but I don't want two keyboards, mice, and monitors on the desk, if anyone's curious why I'd want to do this.
    Thanks!

Someone correct me if I'm wrong... (I'm sure they will!)... but I don't believe the iMac can display a video signal input from another source (pc). It certainly can output to a second monitor, but that won't solve the space problem posed by two monitors on your desktop.

  • Wiping a used iMac with missing install discs

    Hello all,
I am getting a used iMac from my brother within the next month or so.  He has installed alot of 'junk' on it that I would like to remove.  Preferably I would like to completely wipe the hard drive and start from scratch.
Currently it is running 10.6.8 but it does not have the original install discs that came with it when purchased new.  Am I going to have a problem reinstalling the OS without the cds and what would everyone recommend as the best thing to wipe the drive?
I am very familiar with doing this type of thing on a PC, but I am much less experienced with Macs.
    thanks in advance.

Phone AppleCare and order replacement disks; if the computer originally shipped with 10.6.2 or earlier, a retail Mac OS X 10.6 DVD can be used instead(they're available in the online Apple Store), but won't install iLife.

  • Using iMac with dead internal drive long term

I've got a friend with an iMac with a definitely dead internal HDD. Got it back running with an external and it seems to work. We also selected that external as the default start up in System Prefs.
I'm curious was to whether, however, he can just run it forever with that HDD inside. I'm not at his machine, but when working on it I saw some evidence that there were attempts to access it, from like mds for Spotlight, and so on. If it was one of mine I'd at least yank the drive, but he doesn't wanna pay to repair it and is quite content with the external. But we'd like to know if that wonky drive is gonna cause issues, or if there's a way through software to disable it forever.

Add it to Spotlight's Privacy prefPane to preclude indexing. That's all that needs doing.

  • HT1750 bought a used iMac with bad HDD and I have a external HDD but it wont let me reinstall the os until it is registered to me

I bought a iMac with a bad hdd but I have a external hdd.  I wanted to reinstall the OS on the external but it would not let me because I am not the registered user.  What can I do as I do not have the original user info?

You can go to the Mac App Store from another Mac and purchase Mountain Lion while logged in with your Apple ID. It's $19.99 US. After that you can just sign in at the re-install screen with your AppleID and password and it will verify that you did purchase it.

  • Can no longer order an iMac with wireless KB and mouse?

    Hi,
I just figure out that when someone try to order the iMac, the only keyboard choice is wired. I think this disapear at the same time the wireless mighty mouse arrived.
    Am I wrong?
    Thanks

    Hi,
I had this problem. The stores had them in a package with the wirelesss
keyboard and mouse but they were not available on-line. I had to order on-line to get some upgrades but could not have the wireless package...Catch 22.
So when I called in my order I complained that I could not effectively get what I wanted and without much pressure I was offered a discount if I bought the wireless keyboard and mouse as extra. They knocked off £50 sterling (I'm in the UK) from the total cost. So, for about £40 more (which was the extra cost of the wireless pack in the store) I got what I wanted. With the added bonus of having a spare wired mouse and keyboard which are currently still all wrapped up in their box.
I only placed my order on the 17th and receieved it last Friday so it should be a current deal. I hope it is not too late to help you out.
    Cheers.
    Chris

  • I recently bought a used iMac with OS X 10.6.7 and I can not get to the adminstrators account. I do not have the OS disc. Any help is greatly appreciated.

How can I reset the Administrators password to create a new one?

    Forgot Your Account Password
    For Snow Leopard and earlier
Mac OS X 10.6- If you forget your administrator password
    For Lion/Mountain Lion
        Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
When the menubar appears select Terminal from the Utilities menu.
Enter resetpassword at the prompt and press RETURN. Follow
instructions in the dialog window that will appear.
Or see Reset a Mac OS X 10.7 Lion Password and
OS X Lion- Apple ID can be used to reset your user account password.
If you are unable to boot from an installer DVD:
(these will only work on Leopard or earlier)
      1. Boot to Safe Mode by restarting and after the chime press and hold down
the COMMAND-S keys until a black screen with white type appears.
      2. At the prompt, type the following commands pressing return after each
          command line:
         /sbin/fsck -yf
If you do not receive a "Filesystem OK" message then repeat this command
until you do.  If after seven tries you still do not receive a "Filesystem OK"
message, then the system is corrupted and needs to be reinstalled.
         mount -uw /
         cd /private/var/db/netinfo
         mv local.nidb local.old
         rm ../.AppleSetupDone
         shutdown -r now
The second-to-last command above will cause OS X to think that the operating system is newly installed, and when the new owner starts up the computer it will send him/her to the startup wizard where he/she can start a new user without reinstalling.
This last method does not actually change a password. It simply removes the user accounts and lets you create an initial admin account as if the computer were new out of the box.
Reset Admin Password Using The Terminal
You can reset the password by printing out (or writing down) and carefully following these steps.
First, find the short name of the admin user on the machine. The easiest way of doing this is by looking at what the directory is called in the Users folder.
Now, start in Single-user Mode. It should boot into a command line.
Enter these exact lines. Press RETURN after each.
    mount -uw /
    ifconfig lo0 up
    cd /var/db/netinfo
    netinfod -s local
Now you'll need that short name. Enter "passwd", a space, and the short name of the admin. For example, if the admin was rather prosaically called "imadmin", you would enter "passwd imadmin".
The computer will now prompt you to change the password for "lmadmin" (or whatever the short name was). Go ahead and enter a new password.
    Now, enter:
    sync
    reboot
and the machine will reboot. The admin password should now be changed.

  • TS4080 Try to use iMac with Thunderbolt cable as a display and it goes black

For work I have a MacBook Pro 15" Late 2011. I connected a Thunderbolt cable to both the MacBook Pro and iMac. When I press Command F2 to use the iMac as my main screen, the iMac just goes dark. No screen at all. I can only get out of using Command F2.
What am I missing. How can I used my iMac as external display for my MacBook Pro.
    Thanks.

All firmware current on that late 2011 MacBook Pro? This EFI firmware update addresses Thunderbolt target display mode, and other issues.

  • I bought a used iMac with cs6 already installed.  If I want to use cs6 on another computer, how would I load/install it (I can't seem to find any serial number)?

sorry th title is so long.  Wondering if I can use cs6 on another computer besides my 2009 iMac.  Thanks.

Transfer of software to another owner is usually handled by Adobe.
So if you do not have a serial number its not yours to use.
