Using imessage between devices

My son has an ipod touch, me an iphone4. I want to be able to use imessage to 'text' between us, but since he's only 8 I'm not happy for him to have his own apple account so we share itunes etc. But I can't seem to work out how to message between the 2 devices. Both are installed with the ios5 updates, but when I send a message from his ipod it comes back to his ipod, not onto my phone!!!
Thanks Zoe

Thanks for your speedy replies! Have added a different email to ipod touch just waiting for the verification to come through, and no can't create another apple ID for him. Firstly he has a ridiculous amount of birthday credit from itunes vouchers bought for him and I think its important that he can download apps and music that he wants with me 'policing' him but not breathing down his neck - I have immediate alerts if he does buy something and he knows the rules!!! on that note he was alerted when I downloaded a calorie counting app last night!!!

Can i set up my iPad and iPod to use iMessage between the two devices with the same Apple ID? SO i could iMessage if out from my iPod to my iPad at home to be viewed by a family member?

Look into using Apple Configurator.  It's the easiest way to "reimage" and Manage iPads that I know of right now.

how can you use iMessage between 3 iPads with 3 different users but only one Apple ID?

No you do not need separate Apple ID's in order to use 3 devices with one Apple ID. I use 4 devices to Message and FaceTime and all use the same Apple ID. You do need to add additional email addresses for the other devices.
Look at this very informative video for the instructions.

  • Do you need Internet to use Airplay between devices?

    Hey,
Do you need the internet to use Airplay between devices and if so why? Am very confused why such a simple idea is complicated by having to have the internet?

Airplay should work without an internet connection. To check this out I unplugged my modem and Airplay worked fine on my iMac as well as my iPhone.

  • Need Help Understanding How To Use iMessage Between Two iPhones

I have an iPhone 4 and my wife an iPhone 3GS.  We both have iOS 5, but I have discovered something about iMessage I need to make sure I understand correctly.  As I understand it iMessage can send text even if our voice carrier service is unavailable.  I tend to loose signal inside the building I work in.  I usually can get texts in and out, but sometimes not.  But in testing the two phones sending iMessages, I've noticed is that if I have one of the phones with iMessage turned on and the other with iMessage turned off, the two phones will not be able to exchange text.  Is that how it's supposed to work?  Even though one of these phones can receive an iMessage doesn't mean the other one send one back.  Can't the system detect when one phone is connected and another one not, and the one that is not gets sent SMS messages instead?  I don't want to try to send my wife an iMessage because I can't get a voice signal in my building, but her have iMessages turned off and not able to get any messages from me, iMessage or SMS.  I guess I need help better understanding how this actually works between the two phones so I can always get texts back and forth between my wife and I.  My other misgiving is that this iMessage thing consumes my data limit.  My wife gets unlimited because she had her phone before the limits were imposed, but I got on board after, so I am hesitant to use iMessage all the time because of it.  I have no intention to send picture mail through iMessage, but the thing is if I wanted to switch to SMS to send picture mail to save data, but my wife's phone is set to iMessage, she won't get it.  If this is how this thing is supposed to work, I'm not really impressed.  Some insight would be appreciated

I think you are making this way too complicated. Why are you turning iMessage off? If you are at your office connect to the WiFi there and send your wife messages that way (unless your office is blocking the port iMessage uses). When possible the two phones will use iMessage but will revert to SMS is iMessage is not available if that option is set that way.
I would not worry about using up your data plan if you have the 2GB, text iMessages are going to be very small and MMS (picture) ones are not very large either. Unless you are sending hundreds of picture iMessages a day you will have a hard time using up your data.
If you are near an Apple Store you should explore signing up for an intro iPhone course and have them run through iMessage options.

  • Syncing iMessage between devices

I have just an iPad, using iMessage with friends who have both iPads and iPhones. I know I can use their email address to be received by their iPads, and use their phone numbers to be received by iPhones. But I'd like to be able to message them so they receive messages on both devices. How would they get messages to be received by both their devices?

I have  already unchecked and checked etc. My problem is the minute I turn iMessage on again, say from using my iPhone all day, to moving to my mini at night, EVERY CONVERSATION I've had AND deleted loads on the newly turned on device.
Or on my computer when I pull up iMessage for the weekend...
I realize I can turn it off but the reload has me baffled.
Thank you for the help, I appreciate it.

  • Can I use IMessage between 2 devices on the same ITunes account?

I have2 IPads.  One is and IPad 2 the other is an IPad 3.  The 3 belongs to my daughter.  We have wondered if she could IMessage me from her IPad to me on my IPhone or IPad.

Yes you can. I use 4 devices that share an Apple ID and we can FaceTime and Message with all 4 of them. You do need to create additional email addresses for three of the devices. You can use the Apple ID email address as the contact at email address on one of the devices. Some people suggest creating a new ID and iCloud account for this purpose, but you can do it with existing email addresses as well.
This is quite helpful. Give it a look.

  • Trouble syncing iMessages between devices

My iPhone 5S had its OS erased by the update yesterday, but most things were synced to my iPad so it wasn't too bad. My iMessages from before my phone crashed are visible on my iPad, but they are not syncing with my phone. Can I get them back on my phone somehow, through iCloud or something else?
Also, before my phone crashed, my iMessages used to arrive simultaneously between my phone and my iPad. Now, they are only visible on both devices if they are sent through my phone - otherwise, they are only visible on my iPad. How can I fix this?
Thanks so much for your help.

I'm having the same problem with apps not syncing between my iPhone 5s and iPad Air. I made sure under settings > iTunes & Apps Store that automatic Download is on and selected for Music, Apps, Books, and Updates. Have you gotten a resolution to that issue?

  • How do I stop iMessages from showing up on both of my iPhones without having to have two seperate iTunes accounts and still be able to use iMessage between these same two iPhones.

My wife and I have iPhones.  We share an iTunes account and we want to keep it that way.  My iMessages began showing up on her iPhone and vise versa.  I figured out to go to settings, messages and have only the send/receive checked for our individual phone numbers.  When we do that however, we no longer can send iMessages to each other and it goes over SMS.  I don't want that.  I want to be able to send and receive iMessages with my wife without having to have a seperate iTunes account and without each other seeing each others iMessages to other iMessage users.  How do I do this?

One of you needs to set up a separate Apple ID for iMessaging purposes only.

  • I have an ipad mini. I do not have an iphone or a mac. I want to add my friend's telephone number (she has an iphone) to my contacts so we can use imessage between her iphone and my ipad. How do I do this?

How do I add a friend's phone number for messaging on my ipad? I do not have an iphone.

    Hi
To enable imessage on ipad check that imessage is enabled in settings>messages but note that any message that you send from your ipad will be from your email address as you dont have a mobile number linked to imessage.
With everything enabed you should just be able to add contact into your contact list and then message them from there
    Hope this helps

  • IMessage between iOS devices?

I understand that using iMessage between iOS handset devices shows the conversation in blue, while the text messaging is in green, but Apple mentioned this iMessage can be implemented onto other iOS devices like iMac, MacBook Air, etc.  Anyone know how/if you can put iMessage on those systems to allow for messaging to another iOS device?

There is currently no iMessage implementation for OS X devices. So, no.

  • HT3529 Can I set up an iphone and two itouches to the same apple id and use imessages?

I would like to set up my daughters Itouches on my Itunes account so I can manage them.  Will we be able to use imessages between my iphone and the two itouches if they are all registered to the same apple id?  I tried to put a different email for the itouch but it will not allow me to send a message.  Would appreciate any help!  How does this all work?  Or will they need thier own apple id and itunes account?  I am hoping not  as it is much easier to manage all the devices and music from one account! :-) Thanks!!

  • How can I use iMessage after deregistering my device?

I recently switched to WP8 and I realized I wasn't getting my text messages.  After some research, I found that I need to deregister my device(s).  That's fine and it seems to work.  My question now is, how can I continue to use iMessage with my current AppleID without it somehow screwing up my text messages for my new phone?
For some perspective, I had my iPhone on, but the cellular turned off so that I could still use it for wifi.  My iPad only has wifi.  So I turned off my iPhone and suddenly my texts starting working on my new phone.  That's weird, I thought.  How come I'm getting messages on my iPhone through imessage?  After turning off my iPhone, suddenly my iPad started picking them up.  I then deregistered both devices, but I still wnat to use iMessage.  Make sense?  I hope so

    Yes.
Once your iPhone is set up, on your computer add the phone number using Messages/Preferences/Accounts.
