Using imessage internationally

If I'm using imessage internationally over wifi, and texting to someone in the US who has imessage, are there any charges?

Thank you. Do they have to be using wi-fi as well or just myself has to be since I'm the one international and their in the US?

The iPhone is not user servicable. You can get an out of warranty replacement from Apple for $149. If you open the phone yourself, you forfeit the ability to do this.

  • HT3529 Can I use imessage internationally? I live overseas but my daughter lives in Canada. Can I imessage her for free?

We both own iphone 4S's. I just don't want to subscribe to an international texting plan for her, if I know that imessage will deliver them for free. Can anyone enlighten me?

Yes, iMessage is free between iOS devices and Macs worldwide.
Be aware, that if for some reason iMessage is unavailable, it will send it as an SMS if you have that option turned on in Settings > Messages

  • How can I use iMessage internationally?

I have been in India for the past three months and will be here for another two. I've kept my phone in Airplane Mode nearly the whole trip and have only turned in on on occasion to send urgent messages back to the US. At the beginning on the trip, iMessage was working fine through wifi and I could be contacted through my phone number. I took a trip one weekend, however, and when I came back and reconnected to wifi again, iMessage would not activate. Since then, I've only been able to send and receive messages through my email address. I've done a ton of web searching and have tried every suggestion out there. I think I've identified the problem thanks to one forum, and that is that under the Phone pane, my number shows as (xxx) xxx-xxxx while under the iMessage and Facetime pane, it shows as +1 (xxx) xxx-xxxx. The problem is that the number is grayed out on every menu and I cannot change this. I've included some screenshots below to help. Any suggestions would really be appreciated!

Try turning off Dial Assist, and then sign out of Messages and FaceTime and sign in again to see if they will activate.
If that doesn't work, sign back out of Messages and FaceTime, turn Dial Assist back on, then sign Messages and FaceTime back in and see if they willl activate.
    Best of luck!

I have an iphone 5 , and ipad and a Macpro . I love the fact that I can use imessage and icloud to sync these devices . I have everything all set up but am running into one problem with my iphone5 .... I cannot receive text messages from other iphone users on my iphone ... they show up on my Macpro and ipad but not my iphone . I can send and receive text messages from non iphone users and send text messages from my iphone to other iphone users but I am not receiving them on my iphone . I get them only on my ipad and Macpro ... any answers for this ?

You don't need a phone port on the iMac. The HP 7300 DeskJet Pro has an internal modem, you connect the printer's modem connection directly to your phone line. Please re-read the install directions that came with the printer.

  • If I'm overseas, and I use iMessage not connected to wifi, and I'm messaging someone who has an iPhone as well with ios 7, will get charged SMS/mms fees?

if I'm overseas, and I use iMessage not connected to wifi, and I'm messaging someone who has an iPhone as well with ios 7, will get charged SMS/mms fees?

No, but cellular data will be used at whatever international roaming rate you carrier charges for data in whatever country.
Exchanging iMessages requires the same thing as email - an available internet connection. SMS/MMS is completely separate from iMessage.

  • IMessage international

I'm in contact with someone in Australia. I am in Canada. I want to use iMessage to contact him. I just want to make sure I won't have surprises at the end of the month on my cell phone bill.
I use a iPhone. He uses an iPod Touch.
He has my email. I have his email.
Are our communications only going through while we're on wi fi? I don't want to use any data over this.
    What about pictures?
    Thank you.

The best way to ensure you're not being hit with extra charges is to go into Settings>Messages and turn off Send as SMS. That way, if iMessage isn't working for some reason, your messages will just not send until iMessage is working again.
iMessages use a very small amount of your phone's data plan (with pictures using more, of course) but you will not be charged any international texting fees if Send as SMS is off.

  • I'm living in the US if i have a friend who lives in Germany and has an iphone and we want to use imessage is it free or will i cost?

please help me out!! let me know if it costs to use imessage if i want to talk to a friend in germany!!!

as long as you see the blue imessages, there will be no international costs (i.e. it's the same as imessaging someone in the states).
to make sure you don't accidentally send a sms message...
    1) turn off "send as sms"
    or
    2) associate an email with imessage (such as your icloud apple id email address) and send imessages to that address for each other (also change your caller ID in messages to that email address).

  • How to iMessage internationally?

    Hello everyone,
I live in the United States and my best friend moved to Japan.  She recently got an iPhone with a cell phone provider over there and has an iPhone 4S with 3G capabilities as do I.  I was under the impression that iMessage was similar to BBM for Blackberries where if you know the pin (in this case the cell phone number) of the other person you can send them free messages regardless of where they are.  I have her Japan number and I have entered it using the country exit code and Japans code and have not been sucessful in sending the message.  The send button still remains green and not blue.  I have tried various combinations of saving her number in my phone and none results in the icon turning blue.  Is it possible to iMessage internationally?  I am a former blackberry user and I am so glad to have an iPhone because it is soo much better, and I imagine that iMessage is designed as an alternative to BBM for iphone to iphone devices and hope to be able to send texts to my friend over in Japan via iMessage.  If anyone knows how to set this up, it would be awesome!
    Thanks!

It sounds like she maybe doesn't have iMessage enabled with her cell number?  One thing I would advise is having her register an email with Messages (you can do this in Settings and Messages on the iPhone) and then you doing the same thing.
Then send a message to her email address instead of her cell number - this way in case a data connection isn't available it won't attempt to send the message via SMS.

    dj,
That is good to know. Have you  ever turned off wi-fi and used your cellular data instead? I'd like to know if your carrier charges you for the iMessage? I will be travelling with a +44 number on my sim card (Teletial based in the Channel Islands I believe) and some places like South Korea & Japan charge about  $30USD/MB. ( or 19 GBP/MB). The devil is in the detail.
My carrier, 3, does not charge extra for cellular data.   I pay £34 per month for a cellular plan with unlimited data.  So, no, I do not get charged for sending iMessages whether I am on cellular data or wifi.  If I were to try to send an iMessage to an international number that did not belong to an Apple device, it would send as SMS and I am sure that standard international rates would apply.  Apple iMessage is a different protocol for users with an AppleID.  There is no way for the carrier to distinguish it from any other data traffic.

You can seach the net for solutions like this one http://appletvvpn.com/how-to-connect-apple-tv-2-to-vpn/ another idea is to use a PC as the control and fit that with a wireless card and set up a ad hoc wireless network that the Apple TV uses.
