How can I use old iPhone 4S iMessage over Wi-fi only...
I am borrowing a friend's old iPhone 4S to use as a Camera and Wi-fi only device in Italy for two weeks. After much ado, I set up a new Apple ID, erased hers from the iPhone 4S, added mine and logged into my email. Email now works - to and from the Wi-fi only iPhone 4S.
However, I cannot get iMessage to work under my new Apple ID. It used to work with my friend's Apple iD, but all of my messages show up on her new iPhone 6. The iPhone 4S still registers her phone number and says the carrier is Verizon, although it is not connected to Verizon. Her phone number is active with her new iPhone 6 on Verizon Wireless.
I want to use iMessage from this Wi-fi only iPhone 4. Help! iMessage is frozen at "Waiting for activation". I should be able to use iMessage from this old iPhone 4S over Wi-fi, right?. I have an iPad Mini at home (Wi-fi only) that I can iMessage to and from quite easily.
Any insights? I would love to use this in Europe for two weeks.

Sign in with whatever Apple ID desired on the device in iMessage setup.

So for whatever reason, whenever i text other iphone users, and one of us uses IMessage, my phone will only recieve their texts when i'm connected to wifi, even if we both stop using it. For example, i'll text a friend while temporarily using wifi or 4G, and then for the rest of the day, or maybe even longer (it may be permanent, i'm not entirely sure), i'll be completely unable to recieve any texts from them unless i connect to wifi. Sometimes, connecting to 4G again doesn't even allow me to recieve the texts. I'm not sure if this is a hardware or a settings problem, so i'm posting this here. I know it's not a service problem, because i can have normal conversations with my friends using Android, no interruptions or weird breaks in service. I can't afford to turn IMessage off, as i find it extemely useful, money saving, and I often find myself in wifi areas, but during those times i'm not it's extremely annoying because i'm forced to wait a long time just to recieve a short text.

No you do not need separate Apple ID's in order to use 3 devices with one Apple ID. I use 4 devices to Message and FaceTime and all use the same Apple ID. You do need to add additional email addresses for the other devices.

i have an ipod, ipad, and iphone. ilike to use imessage on all of them but i dont want messages to appear on the devices i am not currently using. nor do i want to have to keep a saparate account / id for each device how do i fix the settings on each so that with the same ID / login I can chech me emails, share contacts etc, be able to use i messenger on each without the whole conversation automatically beiing picked up by my other devices? some conversations just arent intended to be shared!
Turn it into the local police department with an explanation as to who you tried to contact and what they told you. That's the only safe procedure, as otherwise the owner could report the iPod as stolen, even though you tried to return it, and get you into trouble.

How can I use iMessage after deregistering my device?
I recently switched to WP8 and I realized I wasn't getting my text messages. After some research, I found that I need to deregister my device(s). That's fine and it seems to work. My question now is, how can I continue to use iMessage with my current AppleID without it somehow screwing up my text messages for my new phone?
For some perspective, I had my iPhone on, but the cellular turned off so that I could still use it for wifi. My iPad only has wifi. So I turned off my iPhone and suddenly my texts starting working on my new phone. That's weird, I thought. How come I'm getting messages on my iPhone through imessage? After turning off my iPhone, suddenly my iPad started picking them up. I then deregistered both devices, but I still wnat to use iMessage. Make sense? I hope soYes.
Once your iPhone is set up, on your computer add the phone number using Messages/Preferences/Accounts.

The problem is that i no longer have that Ipad but my ex girlfriend does and we no longer communicate. You need to change your Apple ID password. You could login to Find My iPhone and wipe that iPad if you felt the need to do so.

Hi,
The first run of Messages will ask you to enter an Apple ID to "register' with iMessages.
If you do not do this but open the App and look in Preferences > Accounts then you will see the iMessages account and the Bonjour Account which will not be activated.
Neither of these two account can be deleted. (even if not being used)
If you then press the + icon to add you will get the choices you posted.
To iMessage you need to "register" and Apple ID with the iMessages service.
As Diane then points out you can link this to your iPhone number.
This "syncs" (Displays on all devices) the various iMessages sent to either iPhone or Apple ID
You can then chose on both iPhone or Mac version how or which ID/Number is going to be used to "Start the conversations from"
I have my Mac version set to start from my Apple ID and the iPhone from it's number.
At this moment the Mac version cannot send SMS text messages to an iPhone.
This is apparently coming with iOS 8 and OS 10.10 (Yosemite)
An AIM account can send SMS Messages but only to a limited number of USA based phone users on these carriers.
(Basically you add a phone number with country code +1 as a Buddy to your List)

When will Apple ever make it convenient for the customer, I just bought an iPad Air and I'm very upset that I can only use iMessage, iPads are the biggest mistake to buy if you like texting family and friends. I'll never buy another one if I can't text using SMS or MMS. Is there any hope for a patch or new operating system to fix this issue, or an app to use with iPad Air

Using imessage between devices
My son has an ipod touch, me an iphone4. I want to be able to use imessage to 'text' between us, but since he's only 8 I'm not happy for him to have his own apple account so we share itunes etc. But I can't seem to work out how to message between the 2 devices. Both are installed with the ios5 updates, but when I send a message from his ipod it comes back to his ipod, not onto my phone!!!

Firstly he has a ridiculous amount of birthday credit from itunes vouchers bought for him and I think its important that he can download apps and music that he wants with me 'policing' him but not breathing down his neck - I have immediate alerts if he does buy something and he knows the rules!!! on that note he was alerted when I downloaded a calorie counting app last night!!!

It is OK to use the same apple id on multiple devices. That is how it was intended to be used. The phone number used must be a number registered on an iPhone. I receive imessages and face time calls on my iPad, iPhone and imac. Sometimes the email addresses and iPhone numbers don't properly register on all device. Logging out and back in on all devices can fix the issue.
Now with the release of ios 8 other compatible Apple devices can use the iPhone over a WiFi network to send and receive vioce calls as well. -

You can't do that through the Messages app. It can only do iMessage, and iMessages can only be sent to iOS devices.
There are many SMS apps in the app store that may do what you want. Search the app store and try them out.
