Using imessage to someone in africa

Can I use imessage on my iphone 4 to text someone with an iphone5 who will be in Kenya, Africa?  Do I need a special ap or will Imessage to Imessage go through just like normal? Will the person in kenya still be able to access their email on their phone as well? Thanks

Yes - both iMessage and FaceTime work that way - have tried it from the UK, France and India back to the US while in WiFi zones - no charges
But like has been pointed out both sides must have iMessage capability

No, but cellular data will be used at whatever international roaming rate you carrier charges for data in whatever country.
Exchanging iMessages requires the same thing as email - an available internet connection. SMS/MMS is completely separate from iMessage.

  • By using imessage to communicate with someone who lives in norway will the imessage charge as an international text message?

if you use imessage to communicate to someone who lives in norway will it charge as an international text?

Blue = Free (around the world)
Green = Standard international SMS rates apply
Facetime (video/audio) is also free just like iMessage.

    Hello ctb4408,
With iMessage, it is meant to show up on all your iOS devices and Mac. If you do not want them to go across all your devices, then you will need to turn off iMessage on your iPad and Mac Pro.

    dj,
That is good to know. Have you  ever turned off wi-fi and used your cellular data instead? I'd like to know if your carrier charges you for the iMessage? I will be travelling with a +44 number on my sim card (Teletial based in the Channel Islands I believe) and some places like South Korea & Japan charge about  $30USD/MB. ( or 19 GBP/MB). The devil is in the detail.
My carrier, 3, does not charge extra for cellular data.   I pay £34 per month for a cellular plan with unlimited data.  So, no, I do not get charged for sending iMessages whether I am on cellular data or wifi.  If I were to try to send an iMessage to an international number that did not belong to an Apple device, it would send as SMS and I am sure that standard international rates would apply.  Apple iMessage is a different protocol for users with an AppleID.  There is no way for the carrier to distinguish it from any other data traffic.

  • I have an iPhone 3GS and in the past 2 days I've gotten 5 emails saying that someone has logged in to my apple ID from an iphone 3gs using iMessage...

So, yes I do have an iPhone 3gs and yes it might be me who logs in bla bla bla, point is... I have not used iMessage as I don't know how to. Also, I have not logged into my Apple ID account through it as I have not been asked to log in, nor have I downloaded any Apps lately that would require me to put my login info into my phone.
I tried fixing this yesterday by changing my password, which I did, but I keep getting said emails... how can I stop those emails or how can I make it so that I don't log into iMessage (whatever that is).
I've texted a couple of friends since yesterday, but all of them have standard non-smart-phones...
    Can anyone help please?
    Thanks

    Thanks a lot!
Ok so... iMessages sole purpose is to be a sort of "messenger" between iOS products right? There's nothing more to it? By that I mean... now that I turned it off, will it have any repercussions on any other apps or functions in my iPhone?

  • I don not want to use imessage at all. I turn it off in settings, but when I go to send a message, it is asking me once again to sign in with my apple id. Then it turns imessage back on, which I do not want.

I am trying to completely turn off imessage. Although I do turn it off in settings, under messages, and when I attempt to send a message it is asking me to input my apple id and will then proceed to turn imessage back on. Too many of my clients do not have apple products. Someone help!

When I attempt to send a message it is asking me to input my apple id and will then proceed to turn imessage back on.
That is because the iPad can only text using iMessage.

  • When can I use iMessage? How do I restrict it to only use iMessage?

I have to pay 30 cents per text, which is a ripoff, and pretty much everyone I know uses an iPhone or iPod touch, so I want to just use iMessage with them. For some reason, though, I can only sometimes send iMessages to iOS users. I can never send them to my friend, who has an iPhone 4 running iOS 5. I can typically send iMessages to my parents but not always, it sometimes only lets me send by paid SMS. They definitely have iMessage enabled. Maybe I'm not choosing the right address to send it to?
So are you supposed to enter someone's phone number, and it'll know whether or not they have iOS and use iMessage if they have it, or do you have to enter their email address that they set as their iMessage address?
Also, is there a way to just force it to only use iMessage? I don't really want to send or receive paid text messages under any circumstance. Come on, 30 cents to send a few bytes is ridiculous.

I tried that, thinking it was exactly what I wanted, but it still sends stuff as SMS (green bubble).

  • Trying to set up additional email on an itunes account my sister and I share, so I can use Imessage etc, but I'm having difficulties

We noticed I've been getting her messages, all of a sudden too. Her phone number and email is hooked up to the account since its her credit card, she has an IPhone of course. But I know that people can use Imessage on their IPod touches I'm just having a hard time setting it up and she doesnt know how to do it either. I got an additional email hooked up to the account I believe because when I turned on IMessage it asked where I'd like the messages to come from and I picked my email and got rid of hers but it asks me for a password, we figured it was the account password but its not.
    Can someone help? Thanks (:

    I recommend that you
Create a NEW account/ID for her using these instructions. Make sure you follow the instructions. Many do not and if you do not you will not get the None option. You must use an email address that you have not used with Apple before.
Creating an iTunes Store, App Store, iBookstore, and Mac App Store account without a credit card
Use the new ID on her iPod but only for:
    Settings>Messages>Send and Receive
    Settings>FaceTime
and Settings>iCloud if you want her to have separate Contacts Calendar and some other things.
Continue to use the same/common Apple ID for Settings>iTunes and App stores so you can share purchases.

  • Is there a way to use iMessage but not have the texts sync to my iPad or other devices, just stay on my iPhone?

I don't like when things from my phone sync to my iPad or iPod, so I am wondering if there is a way to keep the texts on my phone and off of everything else.  I share my iPad with others and don't want to be in the middle of a conversation when all of a sudden it just appears while someone else is using the iPad.  In addition, I don't want the messages to syn to the computer when I plug my phone in, as I also share the computer with others.  This has kept me from using iMessage because of how iCloud works, but maybe I just don't have a good understanding of how they work and someone can clear it up for me.  Thanks.

I don't even see the iMessage option on my iPad anywhere. Maybe it needs to be updated?
Does this have anything to do with iCloud or just iMessage?

  • Must use Imessage?

Iphone5 running IOS 8.02.  Can't text to ATT user who has Iphone 6 unless goes as Imessage, which burns data allowance.  Can't switch to SMS, and if shut off Imessage, won't send.  Am I missing a setting?

    Elector wrote:
Iphones by design send imessages  to iphones and iPads through their servers. Data use is minimal.
    Good Luck
Of course whether or not data usage is minimal would depend on the message itself. Someone who sends a lot of photos/videos via this method WOULD NOT have minimal data usage.
Additionally, iPhones ONLY utilize this method if the iPhone in question actually uses iMessage. If iMessage has not been turned on, the iPhone can certainly send ALL messages to iPhones/non-iPhones via the normal SMS/MMS system for which NO data will be used against a data allowance.
