Using iMessaging vs. Texting Overseas

Looking for some help with the functionality of iMessaging. Verizon or the Apple Store hasn't been able to really answer my question with confidence. When I have asked the question I get "it should work that way" answer.
I am traveling to Europe with my Verizon 4S phone - I will have a SIM card for phone calls, but am not planning on buying a data package plan due to the expense. I plan on using wi-fi when available.
My question is this... I know one of the benefits is that the iMessage feature sends a text as a iMessage when I "text" anyone using another iPhone (with the latest iOS software update) as long as I am connected to a 3G or wi-fi network. The benefit is that these messages don't go against your text plan.  So when I don't have a data plan overseas, a normal text will cost 50 cents per text. If I am on a wi-fi network overseas and text another iPhone user, will it still go through as an iMessage so I won't get charged for it?
Thanks.

Texting other iPhones with iMessage using WiFi will NOT be charged as SMS or data.  However, if it goes via cell network (3G, Edge, etc.), there will be data charges which will be VERY expensive if you have no prepaid data plan. Also, some messages will go as SMS if iMeasage doesn't connect properly. To be safe:
1. Disable cell data or data roaming in settings and send/receive when using WiFi only.
2. Disable "send as SMS" to prevent iMessage from switching to SMS if the connection is bad. Some messages may not go through and this has no effect on receiving SMS or with non- iPhones.
Note that SMS text does NOT use cell data - it goes over the voice channel - though you get charged exta.  MMS media does use cell data and will be very expensive. Sending pictures by iMeasage over WiFi is free but using 3G will be as expensive as MMS IF YOU DON'T HAVE A DATA PLAN.

I used iMessage to text my sister oversea.  She used iMessage too.  My service ATT said they will charge for my text?  Is that right?

No, not per text.  iMessage does not use your carriers text plan as long as both parties are using iMessage.  If you're not connected to wifi, iMessage will use your cellular data plan, with each text being very, very small... probably less than 2kB.

  • I don't have a phone plan, so I cannot text without wifi. I have been using iMessage to text my friends, until it stopped working. I can text my sisters email, but not my boyfriends iPhone. The send button will not turn blue. Help? Please?

There is a problem with iMessage with what Apple says is a small number of iPhones and they are working on a fix. In the meantime try this:
    1. Settings > Messages > iMessage = Off
    2. Settings > FaceTime > FaceTime = Off
    3. Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings
    4. Wait for the iPhone to Reboot
    5. Settings > FaceTime > FaceTime = On
    6. Settings > Messages > iMessage = On
You may have to repeat the steps a couple of times.

  • Pictures that are sent to me both using iMessage and texts won't load on my iPhone

I have received many pictures from other phones, both iPhones and other non iPhones. iMessage and standard text messages have both contained pictures. However when I want to view the pictures, I cannot. When I click on the pictures it takes me to a black screen that says its loading but it never finishes. I have left it loading for over an hour with no luck of seeing the picture. I have tried it on many wifi networks and both 4g and 3G cell service with no luck. I have now figured out to save the picture then enter the photos app to look at the picture. While this solution works, I simply want my pictures to load when I click on them so I can see if it is one I need to save. Any help on how to fix the problem?

  • Using imessage between devices

My son has an ipod touch, me an iphone4. I want to be able to use imessage to 'text' between us, but since he's only 8 I'm not happy for him to have his own apple account so we share itunes etc. But I can't seem to work out how to message between the 2 devices. Both are installed with the ios5 updates, but when I send a message from his ipod it comes back to his ipod, not onto my phone!!!
    Thanks Zoe

Thanks for your speedy replies! Have added a different email to ipod touch just waiting for the verification to come through, and no can't create another apple ID for him. Firstly he has a ridiculous amount of birthday credit from itunes vouchers bought for him and I think its important that he can download apps and music that he wants with me 'policing' him but not breathing down his neck - I have immediate alerts if he does buy something and he knows the rules!!! on that note he was alerted when I downloaded a calorie counting app last night!!!

  • What's the charge if I use iMessage via 3G

I use iMessage to text abroad for eg to usa by using 3G..I know that there's no charge via wifi but what about data?whats the charge if I use iMessage while using 3G?

It uses your data allowance. There is no separate charge for iMessage, just the data used.

  • Charged for using iMessage with another iPhone

Why did I get charged for
Using iMessage and texting another iPhone!

was the other iPhone on the iOS 5?  iMessages only works on latest iOS, so when you text an older phone it won't be free.
Also, even if you have iMessage, the color coding is what indicates if it will be an iMessage or an TXT Message.
    iMessage = Blue
    TXT Message = Green

  • IPhone won't change from iMessage to text message

My colleague had iPhone then had to get rid of it.  He no longer gets my texts as my phone is still using iMessage to text him.  I erased his cell number and re-entered it and that did not work.  What can I do to make my iPhone use text messaging to him now?

He should have turned off iMessage on his old phone before getting rid of it.  If he ever registered it with Apple, he might be able to do the following:
    Go to: https://supportprofile.apple.com/MySupportProfile.do
Log in if not already logged in.
    Click on "edit products"
Click on the "x" to the right of the product.
    Click "unregister"
Unregistering it often deactivates his number with iMessage.

  • HT3529 Can i set my phone to use imessage only when connected to wifi?

I just got a new iPhone and i like how i can use imessage to text my friends because i don't get much service at my house but i have wifi. However, when i'm out i'd like to send normal texts without imessage so it doesn't use my data. Is there a way to set my phone to only use imessage when connected to wifi? I know i can manually turn off imessage but i would rather not have to turn it off every time whenever i am out.

    No.
Text only uses very little data - miniscule, and MMS with the iPhone uses cellular data.

TechCrunch posted a solution today that applies to this problem, I think.
    Go to: https://supportprofile.apple.com/MySupportProfile.do
Click your old iPhone and "unregister" it.

Follow the instructions under the heading "How to unlink a phone number" on this page.

  • Is there a way to use iMessage but not have the texts sync to my iPad or other devices, just stay on my iPhone?

I don't like when things from my phone sync to my iPad or iPod, so I am wondering if there is a way to keep the texts on my phone and off of everything else.  I share my iPad with others and don't want to be in the middle of a conversation when all of a sudden it just appears while someone else is using the iPad.  In addition, I don't want the messages to syn to the computer when I plug my phone in, as I also share the computer with others.  This has kept me from using iMessage because of how iCloud works, but maybe I just don't have a good understanding of how they work and someone can clear it up for me.  Thanks.

I don't even see the iMessage option on my iPad anywhere. Maybe it needs to be updated?
Does this have anything to do with iCloud or just iMessage?

  • In a group text with two phones that use Imessage and one that does not. The person that does not, does not get my message when its sent in group text. How do i fix this?

I have a group text with two of my friends. here's each person break down
person 1 ATT network, using imessage
person 2 verzion network, using imessage
person 3 verzion network, using SMS
All three of us are in a group chat. When person 1 sends a message, person 2 recieves it, but person 3 does not. Then when person 3 sends a message, both person 1 and 2 get it. When person 2 sends an Imessage, person 1 and 3 get it
so the problem is when person 1 sends an imessage, it doesnt change to sms and person 3 doesnt get it, but person 2's automatilly switches it to green.
How can person one get their phone to automaticlly switch it to green in group message while keeping on imessage?

The quote below from http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5760 indicates that it in the situation you describe it should be going as MMS to everyone -- which is not what you are seeing actually happen (and also not what you want to happen if I understand correctly). There may be something else helpful in the link.
Group messages will be sent using iMessage if all recipients have iMessage enabled. If not, the conversation will be sent as MMS. Group messages use MMS even if the content is text only.

Kolyei, sorry for the late reply.
Have your brother create a contact in his phone for himself. Inside his own contact, have him add his phone number and his iCloud address.
Settings > Messages > Send & Receive Have your brother select both his phone number and email addresses where he would like to receive iMessages.

  • If I'm overseas, and I use iMessage not connected to wifi, and I'm messaging someone who has an iPhone as well with ios 7, will get charged SMS/mms fees?

if I'm overseas, and I use iMessage not connected to wifi, and I'm messaging someone who has an iPhone as well with ios 7, will get charged SMS/mms fees?

No, but cellular data will be used at whatever international roaming rate you carrier charges for data in whatever country.
Exchanging iMessages requires the same thing as email - an available internet connection. SMS/MMS is completely separate from iMessage.
