Using iMovie 09 with stereo pairs?

Talking to the geniuses at the local Apple store, it seems clear that iMovie 09 saves Ken Burns pan/crops to the images, not as separate data. This makes it difficult to create identical moves on matching stereo pairs, as the camera pans and crops would have to be exactly the same for the right and left views of the pair.
I'm thinking there's a work around for this limitation but I need to learn more about how iMovie saves its files.
Consider the case where a transition and pan/crop is created for successive right view images, then this is exported as a Quicktime movie, then iMovie is closed. If it is possible in Finder (not in iMovie) to substitute the left view image source files for the right view image source files, using precisely the same file names, then when iMovie opens again it would not know the difference and could export a left view Quicktime movie.
But I can't investigate this hypothesis because I can't find the source files that iMovie uses. Performing a swap out with the original files has no effect (at least, I saw no change in the thumbnails and the playback when using well marked test files. So are there hidden copies of the source files that iMovie uses? And if so, how do I locate these so I can swap them out?
I hope I'm making myself clear here. When I explained what I was trying to do at the Apple store today, the geniuses required several reiterations before they got it, because my intent is so unconventional and they had no reference point. But they did get it, as far as using iMovie as it was designed to be used, and said, no, you can't do this with iMovie because swapping out images within the program removes any Ken Burns pan/crops you have set for them. And there is no way to numerically set these parameters so they are identical in a new movie to those in a different movie.
I didn't ask them about a workaround that would fool iMovie when it is reopened into thinking it is using the same images, but I'm asking here. If I know how to locate those source image files, I can do the rest.
Or am I completely missing something that should be obvious?
(There's software for Windows called ProShow Gold that allows saving camera movements separately from images, and this is used for making stereoscopic slide shows with Ken Burns pan/crops. But I want to do this on a Mac.)
Thanks.

Karsten,
Thanks for that link! I think your arrows will point me in the right direction.
In my effort, the images for stereo projection are placed side by side as a pair in a shared frame, 2800x1050 total resolution. Quicktime Pro can make these and show these, and also a free stereo avi editor called Stereo Movie Maker for Windows. For stereo 3D from start to finish, it is important to be cross platform proficient. Of course, the Mac can make this OS switch, but I'd like to see more stereo 3D options in Mac native software, because right now, there aren't any. Our projection software is a custom build by programmers at UC Davis and our projection system runs from an Intel Mac Pro feeding dual Hitachi projectors.
I made a movie of a slide show with iPhoto, using 19th Century stereocard views, but wanted to take the presentation into Ken Burns territory with camera moves that are coordinated between the right and left views. I think iMovie 09 can do this with some, as you say, (ab)use. Hackers are the bleeding edge, right?
Our stereo theater is at Lake Tahoe, Incline Village, Nevada, within the UC Davis Tahoe Environmental Research Center located on the Sierra Nevada College campus. The building is too new to see on Google Earth (or Google Earth imagery is too behind to show a building four years old).

I connected my iPod Touch to a stereo system phono input using a cable with stereo jacks (red and white) on one end and that plugs into the iPod's headphone jack.  The problem is that the sound is extremely muffled and bass-heavy, with little treble.  I have to turn the bass control on the stereo receiver to pratically zero in order for the sound coming through the stereo to be acceptable.  Is there a setting on either the iPod or the stereo that I need to change in order to fix this?

The phono input is for a phonograph.  The iPod does headphne output is not that same as a phongraph output.  Does th stero have an AUX input?  That should be compatible.

Anyone using iMovie 6 with OS 10.5.3
I am now using iMovie 06 and iDVD 08 with OS 10.5.2 on a MacPro (working fine).
I would like to here from a 10.5.3 user before getting 10.5.3
    Thanks.

    thanks Bengt.
I've never done video editing so this is new to me. was surprised at how easy it was with the test video, in this case, being a "flipvideo camcorder" the first step is taking the video clips and then making them into a movie - hence the need for imovie 6.
I will have to now actually read the instructions for doing the next step of editing. initially just wanted to see if it worked with the FLIP cam. now I can have fun learning something totally new.
first think I'm going to do is check what format iMovie6 saves the movie in. the clips are AVI. The tech said they could be saved to another format, but haven't gotten that far yet.
    thanks

  • Possible to use iMovie HD with Yosemite?

Just upgraded to Yosemite and was extremely bummed to find that iMovie HD is not compatible. I much prefer it for simple projects.  Any way to use it in Yosemite?

I'm surprised to find this crew of iMovie HD loyalists because in OS 10.9.5 Mavericks I've had nothing but grief with this app.
I know a large number of people using iMovie HD 06 successfully with Mavericks and Yosemite.    I probably made 100+ movies with iMovie HD and Mavericks and never encountered a problem.
Using Yosemite requires the workaround below.
Yosemite has a bug that incorrectly identifies iMovie 6 (a.k.a. iMovie HD) as not compatible.  iMovie HD works fine with Yosemite.
Below is a Yosemite workaround that many use until this bug is fixed.
Find iMovie HD in your applications folder.
Right click on it, and select “Show Package Contents”.
You will then find a folder named "Contents”.  Open it.  Then open the folder named "MacOS”.
There you will find "iMovie HD".  Double-click on this, and iMovie HD will launch.
Please report the bug to Apple, the more reports, the sooner it will get fixed.
    https://www.apple.com/feedback/macosx.html
You may be doing things with iMovie HD that I do not.   I know many that keep a dedicated computer with Snow Leopard so they can continue to use iMovie HD without risk.

  • I want to use iMovie 6 on my new MacBook Pro running Lion 10.7.5. It won't download. Can I download Snow Leopard instead and use iMovie 6 with that older OS?

I have a MacBook Pro I recently purchased 'cause my old G4 just couldn't output my video films properly. My new MacBook Pro is running 10.7.5 OS Lion. Don't like iMovie 11 and want to use iMovie 6. It won't download on Lion. Could I download Snow Leopard (deleting OS 10.7.5) and use iMovie 6 then? I saw a previous thread that said that could be done.

AppleMan...I have the same iMac you have...i-7 16GB with a SSD....just bought it second hand and it is about 1.5 years old....it was maxed out with upgrades when the original owner bought it.  It was also restored back to factory settings prior to me taking possession.
I am making home movies in iMovie 11....max length 30 minutes or less.  I am totally new to this editing.  I am using HD footgage filmed from my Hero GoPro 3.  I am finding that the movies that I am creating are skipping, staggering, hanging up etc...usually where I had transitions.  I am certain I have enough power and memory in my iMac, so what's the issue?  I read one of your other posts about optimizing each event or clip to 1080p?  Is this what I need to do for every clip I import?  Can I do this for all the clips at once on import?  I also read that I may need to export the movie to quick time for smooth playback??
Any help you can provide would be appreciated!
    Sincerely,
    Matt
PS=How do I e mail you directly here in the posts?  I went to your profile but didn't see any "e mail" or "contact" member button to click on.

  • How to use iMovie 08 with Drobo FS?  Drobo shows up in the Events Library but with the yellow triangle.

I have an iMac and a Drobo FS.  The iMac can access the Drobo FS but iMovie does not allow me to select it as a storage location.  The Drobo shows up in the Events Library but with the yellow triangle.  I am running iMovie 08.  Any help would be appreciated.  Thanks!

As far as I know you cannot use a Drobo FS with iMovie.
For iMovie events the storage drive needs to be formatted as "Mac OSX Extended - Journaled" this is the HFS+ file system.
The Drobo FS uses the EXT3 file system, and it cannot be changed.
Very annoyingly this means that iMovie can only be used with a drive that is using the HFS+ file system.
I have a Drobo FS that I use with both PC's and Macs - and I love it. Sadly I cannot use iMovie with it. So I purchased a seperate Hard Drive - A G-Tech 3 Tb - and this works fine with iMovie.
As far as I know the FS Drobo's are the only ones that cannot be formatted to HFS+.
I don't know why Apple designed iMovie like this, but I find it very frustrating.
If you want extra storage for iMovie, you will need to purchase a drive that can be HFS+ formatted.
Here is a link to the Drobo site with the various file systems that they support:

  • For the millions trying to use iMovie HD with Yosemite

A good discussion got started in iDVD about using iMovie HD (a.k.a. iMovie 06) with Yosemite.
I am attempting to relocate some of that information into the iMovie forum.
    From jboolean:
Find iMovie HD.app, control click on it and View Package Contents. Open Contents/MacOS/iMovie HD. That seems to bypass the check.
From:  hughmass:   ( says it works ! )
I can confirm that if one right clicks all the way through, and doesn't close the terminal window, iMovie HD works as usual. I put a mp4 into it, put transitions and music, and exported.   Nice discovery as there are a lot of folks who still would rather use this application from 2006. You know, so long ago.
    Hugh
    From Old Toad:
I tried that fix and it will open but won't work further than that. That method also opens the Terminal app which lists all of the bypasses and commands  iMovie is skipping.  If you close the Terminal window iMovie closes. The project file it creates is not a package as it normally is but just a folder.   It freezes up when you try to edit an audio clip.  Then when closed it won't open the project again.
I suspect that there is some, “minor item” that is causing the iMovie HD problem with Yosemite.   Hopefully, some programming "super genius" will find a way to  lead the rest of us out of darkness.

Karsten,   One of the things I really like about you is that even when others disagree with you about “best methods” you always have sympathetic answers and great explanations.  Your technical expertise, and good humor is appreciated by me.
Quicktime will get obsolete. Now with Yosemite, the new kid in town is AVFoundation
I'm all for these improvements.  I would be delighted, ecstatic, overjoyed, to change to a new movie editor if it was half as good as iMovie HD. As you know, the new iMovie can't even set chapters!      I use chapters with Podcasts and DVDs.   I also have Final Cut Pro X.   It can set chapters but it's got way more horsepower than I need.
When I first started using iMovie 12 years ago I never read the manual.  Didn't need to.  Starting with iMovie 08, I spent hours reading manuals and watching YouTube videos trying to figure out simple tasks.  Sometimes I think I have a mental block because I started my video editing with real film using a razor blade and tape!
Nobody forces you, to install Yosemite nor to buy a new Mac
Eventually, you are forced to upgrade.   Let me give you an example.  For a number of years I was using a very high-end analog to digital converter from Grass Valley.  This device came with a terrific piece of software that would “clean up” old footage. I could do lightning and darkening, adjust colors, and filter out “Hiss”.   Well, that software was written for the old IBM processors, the company never updated it. So I was stuck using Snow Leopard (last OS to contain Rosetta) for a long time.
As time went on, I would purchase new software that would NOT work with Snow Leopard, so I was forced to switch to Mavericks.
However, you are correct in one regard; if you have a computer that is running the software and hardware that you like and you can dedicate that computer to that one task, yes, you can continue on, more or less indefinitely until your hardware breaks.  I know people who are doing exactly that so they can keep using iMovie HD.
    pretty nonsense to keep PROJECT-files
I don't keep my project files either.   I do my editing with iMovie HD, then I use iDVD to create a DVD image file (about 4 GB). That is the only item I keep.
My mind boggles at the multitude of video file formats available.  But I know this, 20 years from now I will still be able to play a DVD or at least view the DVD image file.

  • How to use iMovie HD with iMovie 08

    Ok silly question....
What is the purpose of iMovie HD if I already have iMovie 08?
    Can I use them together?
    If so, how?
    Thanks!

If you look at each programme, you will see they are very different. iMovie 08 is in no way an "upgrade" to iMovie HD6, I think you meant to say.
iMovie HD6 offers greater editing features with a more "pro" style timeline editing format which is superior to iMovie 08, in the eyes of a great many iMovie faithful. If you are a You Tuber, you will find 08 is designed to let you do quick, little movies. Apple was filling a new niche when they created 08, but realized that HD6 was still very popular, so they continue to offer it to purchasers of iLife 08. They can be used together.

  • Using iMovie '11 with iPhoto '09

Now that you can buy iMovie '11 separately from the new App Store, is it safe to assume that it's perfectly compatible with versions of apps from earlier iLife suites - eg. iPhoto '09?

It works fine. I just downloaded iMovie 11 from the App Store, and made a couple of short movies/slideshows using iPhoto 09, the previous version. Everything seems to be ok.
The fact that I only had to pay $15 for iMovie alone was great.
If there weren't a rule against speculation, I would speculate on how low the price of other video/photo applications might go. I really advise folks to check out the App Store, there are some real deals there.

  • I am using iMovie 10 with Maverick but cannot share to burn to DVD...

I have spent hours creating a montage but find I cannot share to iDVD to burn to DVD. Does anyone have a suggestion?

How To Use Share With Maverick
In iMovie select the movie you wish to share from the library on the left.
    Select “Share”
Select “File” (the name of the selected movie will appear)
Save to Desktop (this may take a while but you can check by double-clicking on that desktop icon which starts the movie playing in Quicktime. You can play the movie very quickly (say at 32 speed) to be sure it’s all there.
    Leave iMovie open.
    Insert a DVD
    Open iDVD
Select the 3 small boxes icon next to the blue arrows in a circle.
When it opens, drag the movie icon from the desktop into the first box on the left (Not the “Cinema Chapters” box…and the movie title appears.
Insert a DVD disk and select the “Burn” icon-you will get a message that all’s not okay (There were warnings during the project validation. It is recommended that you fix these problems before burning the project) but ignore it and select “continue to burn”.
The movie burned just fine and I tested the DVD on our DVD player. However  when I tried inserting titles down below in iMovie and Sharing to a File, when I went to test it by double-clicking on the desktop icon a got a message that it could not read the format (although in MP-4 just like the movie without titles. Tried this with Quicktime 7 and FlipMac-no luck. So when I dragged that icon into the first box on IDVD it also there could not recognize the format-I’ll keep working on this but at least I can now burn a DVD movie.

  • I am using IMovie 11 with a new iMac.  Unable to import video from a Panasonic PV-GS400 mini-DV camcorder using a Firewire IEEE 1394 400 cable connected to a Firewire 400 to 800 adapter which is then connected to a Thunderbolt to Firewire 800 adapter.

How can I get iMovie to recognize my Panasonic PV-GS400 as a device so I can import video to my iMac?  I have a FireWire IEEE 1394 400 cable connected to the camcorder.  Since my new iMac has only Thunderbolt ports, I purchased a Firewire 400 to 800 adapter to connect to the cable.  I also purchased a FireWire 800 to Thunderbolt adapter to connect to the computer.  My camcarder is still not recognized.

I would suggest that you try a 9 pin to 4 pin Firewire Cable along with the Firewire to Thunderbolt adapter.
Those Firewire 400 to 800 adapters do not seem to work well with iMovie.
The 9 pin to 4 pin cables are available at reasonable prices here, for example.

  • Can I use IMovie HD 6.4 with Final Cut Express?

Can I use IMovie HD 6.4 with Final Cut Express?

    Hi
    Yes and no.
You can't get an editable material over from one to the other.
eg a misspelled word in iMovie project can't be corrected in FCE/P any version.
I use iMovie combined with FCE/P in just one case when there are to many drop outs
on the raw material eg recorded in LP-mode (90min on a 60min tape)
Then iMovie can import in a more forgiving way.
    BUT
When this material is moved over to FCE/P the audio parts needs to be rendered
not just one time but whenever any change is done. A very nearv-wrecking and tedious
    procedure.
Summary. Joint project should use same platform. In my cases me and friend has
each one full version of FCE4 and an external hard disk that contain the movie
    project.
This we exchange with each other to do each the parts that we are on best to do.
    Yours Bengt W

  • Using Logic Pro with Reason 3.0

I am trying to use logic Pro with reason 3.0. I want to be able to sync them together to use redrum within reason as my drum machine. I am using a MOTU 828 mk II audio interface with 8 in's and 8 out's.
When I start logic first and the reason I am not hearing any sound from reason. I can see the meters move in the mixer of reason but I hear nothing.
From the standard documentation that comes with Logic all I can figure out is that rewire is there to sync any other rewire program so that can run side by side of one sequences transport controls.
I want to be able to hear audio from both my arrangement in Logic and in Reason at the same time in the same song in sync.
Can someone please tell me firstly if this is possible and if so how can I implement this kind of setup.
    Thanks in Advance.
    amerretz

Common problem. LP doesn't rewire 'out of the box'.
There are two ways to do this (well, more, but I'll tell you 2)
    1 (Easy Way):
Restart Mac (Just to be sure things are sorted, not everytime)
    Launch Logic
    Launch Reason
    Arrange Window
    Choose a Channel> Pan Left
Go to the Middle section of the Parameters on the Left
With the Channel pop up menu, select Rewire> RWMix L
Repeat for the Right and away you go.
    2 (More Advanced)
    Environment Window
In the Middle section of the parameters on the Left select Create
    Name it Rewire
Under that windows "New" pull down (Top Left), pull down to Audio Object
In the "Channel" pop up (Left, bottom section) select>Rewire (Left, right, 3,4... What ever you want.
Double Click the Audio Object to expand it
Pan Left or right, or whatever you need.
    Rename if you wish
Do the same for the other stereo sideNow's the fun part. Assign these stereo pairs to a bus (above the fader, the default is "Out 1-2")
    Go to the Mixer window
Double click the Bus you assigned, this puts it in the arrange window
    Arrange window
Name the Bus "Rewire" or "ReDrum" or something great like that.
Now you can use it like a stereo pair (which I wish Logic had) for automation and effects and such.
