IS THE SITUATION HOPELESS
I used Target mode to transfer files to a new i7 iMac running Snow Leopard 10.6.8 from an older Dual core Intel machine (EMC 2105) also on 10.6.8. but originally Tiger 10.4. The operation was successful and I ejected the disk icon from the new machine and powered down the old machine. When this was restarted the next day there was a grey screen with flashing Mac symbol alternating with a 'no entry' sign and occasionally a question mark.Keyboard and mouse were unusable so k inserted the original instal disc (No.1 for 10.4. with installer 1.0.4) which came with the machine in 2006 in an attempt to boot from this. The ensuing window said this was not possible and now it cannot be ejected.I have tried everything ! It offers Disk Utility and other options like Terminal but that doesn't work either.I 'repaired disk' and that was pronounced o.k. None of the various keystrokes at start up will work, and the computer will only offer the installer disc continually.The only option would seem to be is to erase the hard drive completely from the disc in the machine.I don't want to do this as there is still material which I need to recover. I think the drive has in some way been corrupted by using it in target mode, and I don't know if there are any other options to try.

No; but then, I've not had occasion to use TDM. I've been using firerwire drives for over 10 years, both FW400 and FW800, with no issues except a bit of instability using a B&W G3 machine.
TDM should be safe. Using cautious, manual copying of files from the Target machine to the Host machine should not result in unexpected loss of files or damage to the Target drive's directories. It should behave exactly the same as if it were an external (to the Host) firewire drive.
• I don't suppose there is anything I can do to 'put back' lost items from a separate Time Machine drive which has an up to date backup on it.
There is probably a way to do that - seems to me that's one of the reasons for a Time Machine volume.
On the other hand, if the Time Machine volume is rigidly linked to the now-absent OS on the original drive, there may be no way to effectively access the files in the TM archive.
I know that using a cloned drive would work well in this instance.
I have no experience with Time Machine, so perhaps someone who has will chime in with suggestions.
With the machine in TDM with the other machine, have you tried running Disk Utility to see if you can effect repairs to the drive? -

When attempting to upgrade my iMac from Snow Leopard to Mavericks, I receive the message "This disk is used for Time Machine Backups" when I try to select the lone available hard drive. I have ensured that Time Machine is turned off. Upon some Google research, some who reported this problem were told to delete the folder backup.backupdb, but I do not have this folder on my Mac. Any suggestions?
The folder would be at the root of your hard drive. Double-click Macintosh HD and look there.
If it isn’t there, I’m not sure what it is seeing. -
I upgraded my 3 yr old iMac to Snow Leopard (OS X 10.6) and now my HP C4150 Scanning function doesn't work (not recognized). I downloaded updated Drivers from the HP site and installed them, but still no joy. Any suggestions?

My 2006 iMac running Snow Leopard won't boot even after erasing and re-installing Snow Leopard. I erased and re-installed by putting the iMac in Target Disk mode and usin my MacBookPro as the host. But after numerous attempts I still can't get it to boot either from the HD or DVD drive. I just get the white screen after the wheel stops spinning. I can't get it to run Hardware Test - just get the white screen. If I use Disk Utility via my MBP it says the disk appears OK. All the Snow Leopad files appear to have been installed. What can I do?

Perhaps you installed the wrong version OS X onto the iMac, you can't use the disk from another Mac.
clean the disk.
If it's not working then use this method to create a bootable 10.6 USB from the iMac machine specific 10.6 disk or the 10.6.3 retail disk on your other Mac, use it to boot the iMac with.

I have tried repeatedly to get my address book on my imac w/ snow leopard to sync to my ipad 1 correctly and have failed every time. I only get about 1/3 the number of contacts and they don't all even correlate with the ones on the imac. Like one will have full middle name and the other only the initial. I don't know where itunes is getting these contacts but doesn't match those in my address book. I keep telling itunes to replace the contacts on the ipad with those on my mac but it doesnt work. Can't do it with icloud cause snow leopard doesn't support, it still wants to use the non existant mobile me format. Hope someone can help. I added the all amnually once before but they screwed up when I sync each time.

You are correct in that whenever you type a series of letters, Address Book (as it always has) finds every single thing with that combination of letters - Names, businesses, adjectives, people's dogs' names, letters in product serial numbers, etc. This is useful for finding a subject on the Web, or finding all documents related to 'iPhoto' on your Mac, etc., but not useful, quick or convenient when trying to find one person to call in your Address Book (which is what people use Address Book for).
What is DIFFERENT in the Snow Leopard version, is that the ability to type one letter to instantly go to last names with that letter has been removed. Previously, you could easily find 'Bill Tilman' in one second by simply typing 'T'. Now you get every word that starts with T and all the words in the card that have a T in them. If you type out a full name like 'Bill', it finds every person named Bill. No one would ever want to find all their contacts named Bill to call them. You could type out the full last name 'Tilman', but there again you are forced to type out a complete name to do a search. It would actually be quicker to scroll down and find it manually. The ability to type a single letter to find the last name (or business name) of a contact you needed to call, was much quicker and easier than having to type out the entire name. -
My parents bought a new 20 in iMac this February with a ATI Radeon HD 2600 Pro Graphics Card. It was their first Mac previously having used PC's. I was looking at the Snow Leopard specs last night, as they will ask whether they should get it and it clearly says that Open CL will only work with the ATI Radeon 4850, Radeon 4870 or more recent NVIDIA cards used in the iMacs introduced this year.
I was a bit shocked at this, surely there must be some mistake. OK my 5 year old G5 won't run Leopard, but to find that a six month old iMac won't run a core Leopard component is, well, not very impressive. So Leopard will boost your Mac's performance but only if you bought it this year. I have to admit I'm beginning to wonder about Apple.
Can anyone tell me whether Snow Leopard will boost performance on this iMac at all?OpenCL is not a "core" Mac OS X component. All it does is allows developers to use a Mac's graphics hardware (the GPU) to do some non-graphics processing in certain situations, basically off-loading some types of work from the CPU. But the primary purpose of the GPU is to accelerate graphics processing, and Snow Leopard supports the OpenGL every bit as well as Leopard. Also, to take advantage of OpenCL, developers have to figure out where they can apply it, and recode their applications to use this new capability. That's going to take time.
Therefore, Snow Leopard will immediately make your parent's iMac run better, more efficiently, in many ways not related to OpenCL, due to the different areas of optimization. Lack of support for OpenCL does not make that iMac any slower when upgraded to Snow Leopard, it just just a non-factor, something that does not apply. There will be no impact from OpenCL even on supported Macs until developers learn how to use this capability and update their apps.
It is the same as any improvement Apple makes from one generation of iMac to the next. The 2008 iMac supports 4GB of RAM (officially), the 2009 iMac supports 8GB of RAM. The 2008 iMac can connect a 24-inch second display, the 2009 iMac can connect a 30-inch second display. The 2009 iMac has larger hard drive storage options. And so on... -
IMac w/Snow leopard WiFi intermittent
My wife has an 2008 24" iMac running Snow Leopard.
The WiFi keeps dropping out.
It can be seen on the network, but wo't respons to a ping.
If I reboot it's okay again.
This happens frequently.
Any ideas?

The interface that connects to the Internet should be dragged to the top of the list.
Instead of joining your Network from the list, click the WiFi icon at the top, and click join other network. Fill in everything as needed.
For 10.5/10.6/10.7/10.8, System Preferences>Network, unlock the lock if need be, highlight the Interface you use to connect to Internet, click on the advanced button, click on the DNS tab, click on the little plus icon, then add these numbers...

iMovie seems to have developed a glitch. When i try to import photos they show in the timeline but not in the movie.
Any ideas?You are probably looking in the wrong place - all photos in Photo view and in event too unless you have a corrupted library
most common cause of your not finding them is bad sort - view menu ==> sort events
Nest most common cause is a bad data/time on the camera - this can be corrected using a smart album to find the photos from that camera and then using using the adjust time/date command to fix the bad ones
YOu can alwasy find the event a Photo is in by selecting it and selecting show event

On the RAM issue, I fully agree with what Etresoft has written. I have just visited various sites, including OWC, Mactracker and iFixit and your Mac seems to have the Penryn processor. It will address 6GB of RAM which is more than enough for your use.
Where I differ from him, is Lion. The last big cat which I liked was probably Snow Leopard, and thereafter now Yosemite. There has been a lot of successes with your generation migrating to Yosemite, but with 6GB of RAM. Admittedly there were also problems for some, but I have observed even more successes even after initial problems. Mostly these problems were caused by adware or crapware installations. (Thank you Etresoft for a wonderful utility!)
Your iMac also has a SATA interface for a 3GB SSD, which is good enough. We have a Mac here with the same interface, still with a normal conventional stock HD running Yosemite, but only 4GB of RAM and it is running fine.
Of course the newer technology processors, faster RAM, PCI SSD, greater bandwidth on the newer Macs perform much better. But as I am on the older side, (ha ha), some of the 'vintage' Macs are still my favourites to use for certain tasks. Like using 9.09 for doing certain things and then converting the results afterwards for completion!
But, once again, it is your decision and only you can decide as you yourself knows your own circumstances better. Weigh up the options, considering what Etresoft has pointed out vs what Yosemite offers ito continuous support, security and features. There are a lot of your type of iMacs out there, and some of the users spoke about feeling like having a new Mac. There were others, who were wailing though. You could of course, also follow the advice of a test installation on an external and testdrive it, or wait for the release of 10.10.2 which I read somewhere is eminently close?

Will iMac running Snow Leopard support an iPad2 running io8?
I have been using a USB cable to sync my wife's iPhone5 and my iPad2 with my iMac running Snow Leopard. (It's a 1st gen Intel iMac and I can't go any farther with OSX versions.) Until this week, I have never had a problem syncing our devices with the iMac. However, when I went to hook up the iPad, it forced me to download a software update for ios7. Looked like everything was fine, though slow in downloading, when I got received an error message (unknown error) that crashed the iPad.
MY only option at that point was to perform a Restore and Update from the backup on my iMac, which I did. However, the update forced ios8 onto my iPad and wiped out all downloaded photos, music, apps and books. When I go to sync the iPad, all of the settings on iTunes look correct, but the sync button is greyed out and I am not able to download any of the aforementioned files from the iMac to my iPad.
Help! Is there something I can do to fix this without having to schlep into an Apple Store, where I will be made to feel technologically stupid and inferior by a Genius? Or is the problem that my iMac running Snow Leopard can no longer support the devices running iOs8?You could've backed up your iPad prior to the "forced" upgrade which, by the way, you could have cancelled. iTunes doesn't upgrade your iPad, automatically, on its own. You had to click the Upgrade button to initiate the upgrade. You didn't have to do anything with that button. You can just leave it be.

Ignoring the Upgrade/Update button doesn't affect the normal iTunes/iDevice syncing/backing up operations.

If your current version of iTunes doesn't recognize your iPad2 under iOS 8, you need to check the iTunes update feature, in iTunes or in OS X Software Update feature in OS X Preferences panel to see if there is a iTunes update available for OS X 10.6.8 Snow Leopard. -

As my father-in-law's MacBook (10.6.8) with FaceTime 1.0.4 is not at hand now, I can not check it for myself right away.
But my understanding is :
(1) FaceTime 1.0.5 update is free for download for the OSX 10.6 users who have already purchased and installed FaceTime 1.0.4 or earlier.
(2) The OSX 10.6 users who want to start using FaceTime from now, need to purchase the 1.0.5 for $0.99 (just as other OSX 10.6 users did before).
The latter (2) is because OSX 10.6 does not include FaceTime which was not ready at the time of its release. Due to some accounting regulation, Apple chose to sell the FaceTime to OSX 10.6 users at the mimimum price rather than to add the function afterward for free.
That means every OSX 10.6 user who wants to use FaceTime has to pay $0.99 at some point of time, but I believe Apple is not so greedy to charge the same software twice to fix its bug.
I guess the screen shot you posted might be taken either by a non-OSX 10.6 Mac, or by OSX 10.6 Mac without FaceTime installed. If you see the same page by a OSX 10.6 Mac with FaceTime alreay installed, it will look diffrently.
Anyway, I may be wrong, but I will check it with my father-in-laws' MacBook hopefully this afternoon.
