Using Imovie clip files on a pc

Hi
I used Imovie to log and capture from dvcam then i copied everything from the clips folder to dvd. the problem is my doesnt recognise the format.
Is there anyway i can use these on my pc?
I intend to use premier pro1.5 and i dont mind re-rendering them to a PC friendly format so any help would be appreicated.
Thanks

Your iMovie clips are probably in DV Stream format, which is basically raw data straight from the camcorder. Here's some info:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DV#Applicationsoftwaresupport
You should probably go back into iMovie and export them properly, either to DVD or to QuickTime. If possible, choose a pretty high bit rate so you don't lose quality.

  • Using iMovie 4 files in iMovie 5

My old home movies were deteriorating so I imported them into iMovie 4 and I now have a 500 GB collection of old and somewhat disorganized movies. iMovie 5 has the ability to cut and paste between projects which would be very helpful, so I upgraded to iMovie 5.0. Now I read that projects should be completed with the original program.
What are the problems associated with using iMovie 5.0 on 4.0 projects?
    G5   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

The conversion from iMovie 4 to iMovie HD is usually successful, but it can encounter problems if the iMovie 4 project had features not supported by iMovie HD. If iMovie 4 clips were made by certain third-party iMovie plug-ins, for example, I can imagine that might cause problems.
If your iMovie 4 projects contain only unedited video clips, there should be no problems. Nonetheless, always make a backup before converting any project.
Tip: do a Save As after converting the iMovie 4 project to iMovie HD. That creates a true iMovie HD project, avoiding user issues often encountered with converted projects.
(Save As creates a true iMovie HD package, not the hybrid folder created when converting. It's too easy to get inside the hybrid, open the wrong project file, and mess up the project pretty badly.)

  • Location of IMovie Clip files

Where do I find the clip files of captured DV-cam footage on my HD ? Are they only part of the specific IMovie project ?? Can I only share clip files by opening individual projects and copy/paste in between ?
    IMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    Welcome to the discussions.
What looks like an iMovie project FILE is actually a PACKAGE. In the Finder, you ctrl-click on your project package and select "Show package contents" in the context menu. Inside you find a folder called "Media" and that's where your clips are.
WARNING: Don't change the contents of the package unless you KNOW what you are doing.

  • Using imovie exporting files to dvd

That is what iDVD does: compresses the video file to the DVD standard format of mpeg2.
iDVD does not care about file size, only file length:
    iDVD encoding settings:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1502?viewlocale=en_US
    Short version:
Best Performance is for videos of up to 60 minutes
Best Quality is for videos of up to 120 minutes
Professional Quality is also for up to 120 minutes but even higher quality (and takes much longer)
That was for single-layer DVDs. Double these numbers for dual-layer DVDs.
Professional Quality: The Professional Quality option uses advanced two-pass technology to encode your video (The first pass determines which parts of the movie can be given greater compresson without quality loss and which parts can’t.  The second pass then encodes those different parts accordingly) , resulting in the best quality of video possible on your burned DVD. You can select this option regardless of your project’s duration (up to 2 hours of video for a single-layer disc and 4 hours for a double-layer disc). Because Professional Quality encoding is time-consuming (requiring about twice as much time to encode a project as the High Quality option, for example) choose it only if you are not concerned about the time taken.
In both cases the maximum length includes titles, transitions and effects etc. Allow about 15 minutes for these.
You can use the amount of video in your project as a rough determination of which method to choose. If your project has an hour or less of video (for a single-layer disc), choose Best Performance. If it has between 1 and 2 hours of video (for a single-layer disc), choose High Quality. If you want the best possible encoding quality for projects that are up to 2 hours (for a single-layer disc), choose Professional Quality. This option takes about twice as long as the High Quality option, so select it only if time is not an issue for you.
Use the Capacity meter in the Project Info window (choose Project > Project Info) to determine how many minutes of video your project contains.
NOTE: With the Best Performance setting, you can turn background encoding off by choosing Advanced > “Encode in Background.” The checkmark is removed to show it’s no longer selected. Turning off background encoding can help performance if your system seems sluggish.
And whilst checking these settings in iDVD Preferences, make sure that the settings for NTSC/PAL and DV/DV Widescreen are also what you want.

  • IMovie Clip File Questions

Okay, I found out today that the reason my IMovie files are so big is because it stores the original movie file in the package contents on the project file.
Is there a way to make it so that all of the clips I pull out of the original file are their own instead of feeding off of the original?
I know that each clip that you put a subtitle on becomes it's own clip, so is there a way to do it without one?
This would free up a lot of space for me. Thanks!

Wouldn't it be wonderful if there was a way to "compress" an iMovie project by permanently deleting all the trimmed parts of the clips? I understand that Apple wants us to be able to undo any mistakes but I would like to be able to archive my projects once I'm done editing them. I'm shooting HD video but don't yet have a Blueray/HDVD player (or burner for that matter (or HDTV ;-)) so I just want to preserve the full quality for future use. Sure I could record it back to a DV tape, but then I end up with transitions and text burned into the clip which I also don't want.
Right now it seems like I'll have to export all the clips (without the fx/txt/transitions) and then reimport them... sounds like a drag.
Please Apple... add the ability to permanently delete trashed parts of clips!!

  • Using Imovie 06 files in Imovie 8

Hello, I did an imovie file with Imovie06 but it is impossible to load it in I movie 08. It is as Imovie08 does not see it and is therefore unable to load it. Is there a way to have it visible from I movie 08?
And otherthing my I movie weight 23Go, can I keep it on my computer but with using less memory as I won't use it very often, or do I need to archive it on an external device (like CD or external hard drive)
    thks
    omy

hey there omy, Welcome to Discusssions.
try your iMovie 06 project into iMovie 08, in the iMovie 08 Discussion. as for the 23 GB movie project, it would be wise to consider getting an external firewire hard drive. i suggest a minimum 250 GB, as storage is getting cheaper all the time & you can put/keep several large movie projects there.
    good luck.

  • Uploading iMovie clips to server?

    Hi,
To make a very long story short, I am in the process of uploading files from one computer with a very corrupted hard drive to my powerbook. I am able to move documents and photos fine. However, when I try to bring my movies over, it doesn't upload them to the server.
I don't have an ftp application on my PowerMac G4 and do to hardware issues, I am unable to download an ftp program such as Fetch and decompress it (broken pipe error).
So, I am using a browser based ftp in Internet Explorer. I can get into my server fine, but when I try to move Quicktime movies, they just open in the browser and start playing. When I upload via my webshell at my server, the quicktime movie does go, but not all the clips and files that it needs to run. I have tried exporting the iMovie and this PowerMacG4 can't seem to do that anymore.
Any thoughts on how to upload iMovie clips, files, movies via ftp in a browser?
    Thanks,
    Maina'

//I know! Sorry, it get's crazy trying to explain this problem!//
    Hi Karsten,
Thanks for your suggestion, however, I have already done this. This PowerMac G4 seems to be almost beyond hope, I am just trying to grab my photos and some files that I haven't backed up in a few months.
    Things I have already done...
Internal CD/DVD drive not working, so can't burn any data that way
Hooked up external firewire drive to it and didn't recognize the drive.
Have taken my Powerbook and put the G4 into Target Mode and at first the Hard drive showed up on the Powerbook, but not long enough for me to scan through it and grab data. Tried that a few times and now it doesn't recognize it at all.
Have put the Laptop in Target Mode and tried to use the G4 as the primary drive, tht didn't work that way either, it didn't recognize the drive.
Used Disk Utility to verify and repair the drive. It couldn't repair the drive,
Tried mounting the drive in Disk Utility and that didn't work.
I also tried all the firewire ports on my G4, including a 9 pin to 6 pin setup. None of them allowed me to see the G4 on my laptop, while in target mode.
I have a USB to USB cable, and tried that also, no luck
I have used an ethernet cable and tried to network then, no luck. My G4 mounts my PB, but not the other way around.
Nothing seems to be recognizing my drive on the G4. I always get an error message.
So, I opted to upload and download, my last resort. Can't use iDisk since my PowerMac G4 is OS 10.2.8, you need 10.3 and later. I would buy the OS and upload, but the drive won't read it.
I have some web space and was using ftp and that was moving my documents and photos, now I just need to somehow move the movies.
Have I confused you move in this longer post?
    I appreciate your help.

  • Using WindowsDV  .avi files in iMovie and iDVD

I'm about to buy a Mac after using PCs for many years. I'm still deciding whether to buy an iMac 20", upgrade the Ram and use an external firewire drive or to get a Mac Pro and use internal drives. Initially I'll use iMovie and iDVD and I have some questions regarding using files I've already created on my PC. Up until now I've mainly been using Ulead Video Studio 10 and Ulead DVD Workshop. DVD Workshop does not do 16:9 menus and has now been discontinued and I've been impressed with iMovie and iDVD when I've seen it in Apple stores.
I have some unedited 16:9 .avi files that I've captured from my Panasonic GS-400 camcorder as well as some already edited .avi and .mpg files. Will iMovie and iDVD recognise .avi DV files when accessed through my network or copied onto the Mac hard drive? I'll load unedited clips into iMovie for editing but anything that's already edited I'd like to put straight into iDVD, add chapters and make a menu etc.
Is this going to work easily or will I have to convert the files to an apple compatible format?
Thanks for any advice you can offer.
    Ken
      Windows XP Pro

Hi Ken and welcome to Apple!
You should not have a major problem. The AVI files should (repeat should) be recognized by iMovie. If not, conversion should (I love the certainty of that word!) be easy.
An iMac will do all you ask, but I recommend not less that 1GB of RAM.
At this stage, go get your iMac, and try to import the AVI files into iMovie. If that is not successful post back!
Remember: iMovie expects to be 'fed' by digital video through a firewire connection.
Any more questions, we are here to help!

  • Can I use imovie to make a movie by first making a soundtrack and then adding video clips to illustrate the sound track?

I want to make a movie using imovie 11.
I want to import still photos taken from the inet and import video clips of myself over the stills. I also want this movei to illustrate a soundtrack of my singing with a karaoke file.
    Is this possible?
How would I get my voice singing with the itune song so my singing and the itune become one track?
Then could I use that soundtrack to build the movie, rather than start with video an add soundtrack?
    This is an ambitions project.
    HELP!

    Hi
This is a No and Yes question.
No You can not add Audio first in any iMovie from iMovie'08 (version 7.0.x) and onwards. You need to use FinalCut Pro X to do this - Where it's rather straight forward.
Yes - it is a bit tedious but can be faked in iMovie - by first creating a Black .jpg photo. Add this to TimeLine in iMovie as many times (and at max duration) to reserve the time the movie will use. Then add Your Audo track. Then add Your photo and videosequences. There are a function in iMovie that let's You replace the original video with the one You want to insert - "Cutaway" - Then continue till all Black parts are replaced. Movie done !
But really - take a look at FinalCut where this is much easier.
    Yours Bengt W

  • Using HDV clips from Final Cut in a 4:3 iMovie Timeline

I'm trying to use HDV clips in a standard def, 4:3 iMovie file. I export them as full quality QT clips out of my FCP timeline - to the desktop - then when I drag them into my iMovie file - they squish instead of letterboxing. I've tried everything but can't get it to work. Some clips import with the letterbox and others import anamorphic style. Very strange.
It looks like iMovie likes the .dv file extension - but I can't get that with the QT clips I make in FCP - when I use DVStream as an export the quality goes way down. I also tried converting them in Quicktime - but that isn't working. Any ideas?
Again - just trying to keep my 16:9 clips in 16:9 and not squishing them to be 4:3. I'd be happy getting my QT clips from FCP to be .dv files even.....
    Thanks

It looks like iMovie likes the .dv file extension
Yes, a correctly 4:3 or 16:9 flagged .dv imports best and most predictably to iMovie
when I use DVStream as an export the quality goes way down.
Of course there is downscaling when converting HD to plain lower res DV. Also remember that QT Player by default shows low-res preview of .dv -- you have to turn on HQ display to see all quality.

  • Using clip files in other applications

I'm trying to move the "clip" files from an old mac to Adobe Premier. These files have no extension. What file type are they?

iMovie version 4 only used .dv (DV Stream) format.

  • I've been using iMovie '09 for more than a year and now .MTS files won't upload?

I've been using iMovie '09 for more than a year and each time I would plug in my SD card (using a card reader) the import box would open and I could select the clips I wanted to work with. Now, suddenly, today the import box won't open. Why??? I literally just used the exact same method three weeks ago and it worked fine. I have not done anything differently. Also, when I go to "file > import from camera" it only shows the built-in camera. What am I doing wrong? And how do I get my files? I do not want to download a converter of any time. I know there has to be a way because it literally just worked three weeks ago so I'm just trying to figure out why it won't work now.

Unfortunately, you cannot upgrade to Safari 5 or 6 on Mac OSX 10.4.11 and that is what you need to access iCloud (http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4759). I am not sure, but maybe you can install another and newer browser version of Firefox or Chrome to access iCloud.

  • Using iMovie 08 .dv files in FCP 5.0?

Does the DV format need to be changed to quicktime because it wants to be rendered as soon as its put onto the timeline. and then it shows an error when trying to render.
I imported a whole tape to iMovie because I was curious about the new ver. and well I was pretty disappointed. So now I wanna use the imported files and from iMovie 08 and use em on FCP 5.0
Thanks for all the previous and future help.

#20 Using iMovie to Capture for FCP edit
Shane's Stock Answer #20: Using iMovie to Capture for use in FCP.
iMovie handles the media differently from FCP, specifically where audio is concerned. So it is not a recommended workflow. Here's why...
iMovie captures using DV Stream (.dv) standard which does not use timecode. That is a big disadvantage over the way that FCP captures in that you can't go back and recapture the material at a later date if you need to revisit a project.
The DV/NTSC specification (the one FCP uses) also calls for seperate tracks for audio and video, even if you capture it as one clip. iMovie' DV stream format is muxed audio and video, which means that they are tied together (I can't get into specifics because I ain't no engineer or programmer). FCP is a bit more demanding and captures the seperate audio/video tracks, either in a single media file or as seperate video and audio files. With FCP you could capture video only or audio only because each is defined by the DV specs. while with iMovie you can't.
Also, if you drop the iMovie footage into the timeline, your will get the RED render bar forcing you to render the footage in order to see it. You can use either QT Pro or Compressor to convert the .dv footage into DV/NTSC in order for FCP to work with it without needing to render.

  • Opening iMovie throws hundreds of clip files in trash

When opening iMovie it seems to hang for quite a while. Noticed also it was creating hundreds of clip files into the trash while program is opening. None of these clip files have any video on them and show zero K for file size. Also camera is being recognized and controls operate camera (Canon zr40) but no video comes through - blue screen. Had functioned fine in the past. Know camera is functioning fine and firewire connection is good because I tried it on another Mac. Also camera works fine with iMovie 8. Trashed plist file and did the garageband thing with no luck. (Problems existed before install of iMovie 8). Any ideas as to what is going on?

Patrick - no external drive is hooked up to the computer. Another thing - when it was working fine I only had a single account on the computer. I later set up several accounts for my kids and hadn't had an opportunity to use iMovie until just recently when I found it didn't work. I deleted the accounts in case that had something to do with it but still no change.

You actually want a vertical video??
What would you show that on?!
Rotating video or photos in iMovie 11:
    http://help.apple.com/imovie/#mov3a884fd3
In earlier versions of iMovie you can also do this using Quicktime Pro 7:
Open MOV file in QT Pro (QT 7.6.6)
    Window -> Show Movie Properties
    select "Video Track"
select "Visual Settings" from lower window
    check "Preserve Aspect Ratio"
Click on appropriate rotation icon (MOV rotates!)
Click back on the open MOV in Player Window
    FILE -> Save
You can also do this using TransformMovie, available here:
