Using iMovie - looking for mp4 converter

Hi,
I am looking for a .mov - mp4 converter, as I can't open my .mov files from my cam in iMovie.
Does anyone know a good freeware program?
I found Xilisoft and 4media converter, but they are not for free - trial version converts only 5 minutes or if it's shorter only half of the file.

I've been using iMovie '09 for more than a year and now .MTS files won't upload?

I've been using iMovie '09 for more than a year and each time I would plug in my SD card (using a card reader) the import box would open and I could select the clips I wanted to work with. Now, suddenly, today the import box won't open. Why??? I literally just used the exact same method three weeks ago and it worked fine. I have not done anything differently. Also, when I go to "file > import from camera" it only shows the built-in camera. What am I doing wrong? And how do I get my files? I do not want to download a converter of any time. I know there has to be a way because it literally just worked three weeks ago so I'm just trying to figure out why it won't work now.

Unfortunately, you cannot upgrade to Safari 5 or 6 on Mac OSX 10.4.11 and that is what you need to access iCloud (http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4759). I am not sure, but maybe you can install another and newer browser version of Firefox or Chrome to access iCloud.

I want to put those on an external disk.

You must do this within iMovie.
In iMovie, click VIEW/GROUP EVENTS BY DISK
This will show all properly formatted external disks (must by HFS+ journalled, not FAT32)
Now you can drag your Events to the disk by dragging and dropping the Event Name to the icon of the disk in the Event Source List in iMovie.
You can also move projects. See iMovie Help for details.

If you are interested in computer simulated drawing and painting effects, have a look at the "ToonIt!" plug-in for Aperture. This will do some of the basic work for you, but you will have to do quite a lot of editing afterwards, to turn the image into a piece of art.
It might be easier, to do most of the drwing and painting yourself in the first place - ArtRage Deluxe is very versatile, if you have a large trackpad and pen.

Is anyone using iMovie 08 for editing footage from a Canon 5D Mark 11?

I'm interested to converse with anyone that is using iMovie 08 to edit Movie files from the Canon 5D Mark 11.

I have iMovie 09 on order hoping that it would alleviate this issue - sounds like it does not. Similarly to you, my footage imports fine, but the application crashes when the curser is moving over the video. I am lead to believe that iMovie just cannot cope with the high resolution of the 5D Mark 11.
I have tried the same files on other Macs and the same issue occurs, so it is not my machine or software issues on my machine. All of my software is up to date - except for Quicktime. I am running 7.5.5, so don't bother trying to roll back from 7.6 because it will not help.
I have also tried the footage on Final Cut Express and it crashes that application as well. I understand the Final Cut Pro can work with the files. At this stage I presume that Canon 5D mark11 users cannot edit footage on iMovie or FCE and possibly some other applications.
Let us hope and pray that Apple and Canon can sort this out!

i love to use the trailer for making quick an nice movies. As I uploaded them to youtube and tried monetize them via youtube they get rejected due to the music.
How do I clarify that this is music from iMovie and I bought it with the software?

Using iMovie 08 for Stop Motion?

My son and I have been using iMovie to do stopmotion animation. But with iLife 08, it seems the ability to import stills at 10-15fps and without the Ken Burns effect has been taken away. I can't get still photos to come in at anything besides 4sec/frame, and they have to be changed one by one - I can't batch change them. And, I can't figure out how to get rid of the Ken Burns effect.
I'm probably just going to by iStopMotion anyway, but does anyone have tips on how to import a whole batch of iPhoto stills at ".3 fps" (*** happened to references to the 30fps btw)? AND turn off the Ken Burns effect?

The menu command File > Project Properties lets us control both the default playtime of imported images (both new images and all current project images) and the Ken Burns effect. And, of course, after importing an image you can adjust both properties by selecting the image and clicking the little Crop icon in the upper left corner.
These functions can also be accessed by Control-clicking on a slideshow image thumbnail.
iMovie 7 doesn't let us set a playtime shorter than .1 seconds (about 3 frames). For shorter durations it may be necessary to use QuickTime Pro to import the images as a sequence into a QuickTime movie. That lets you import using any duration you want. Then you would import THAT movie to iMovie. It would arrive in iMovie as video, however, not individual images.

HD video from iMovie looks awful when converted in iDVD

Shot some 16:9 HD video and made a project in iMovie, then "shared" it to iDVD to create a standard-definition DVD.
Unfortunately, the resulting DVD looks awful - far worse than a commercial standard-def DVD. The image is very pixelated in a manner that seems worse than standard-def resolution limitations. I processed it using the iDVD "professional" encoding.
Why does this look so bad, and by "bad" I mean worse than other standard-def DVDs? Is there a way to optimize the stepping down from HD between iMovie and iDVD?

There are some observations to this
• I do not use - Share to iDVD - in any version of iMovie
• iM'08 or 09 or 11 - I Share to Media Browser - and in iDVD get the movie from here - result is better
BUT - iM'08 or 09 or 11 - are not tools to use if You want a Good DVD
• iMovie up to HD6 or FinalCut any version are ! They keep all lines that builds up the picture - the new ones
discard every second line resulting in a 50% loss of sharpness
Especially if recorded im SD-video format on miniDV tape (interlaced) then choise of video editing application is very important.

Just used iMovie HD for first time on mac pro

ugh! locked up first time loading. very sluggish camera controls. will research this on the iMovie forum as well, but has anyone experienced this here? almost as if it were not universal.

I have been using it with no problem. Maybe it is related to the camera you are using as opposed to the program itself. I have a Canon Optura.

How to use iMovie HD in Yosemite!

Thanks to Ziatron for discovering this.
One goes to the crossed out iMovie HD application, right click on it, open package contents, then macos, then right click on iMovie HD which opens in terminal. No worries, just leave the terminal window open, and use IMovie HD as you usually do.
It works. I put a mp4 into it from my panasonic fZ1000, and then exported a video to my desktop. Might be things that are a little wonky, but at least the application works.
Just remember to not close the terminal window until you are done with HD
I clicked on everything I could, and played with the code, but missed this solution.

Looking for a specific title...

Hi,
I have been scouring the usual plug-in sources for iMovie looking for a specific kind of title. Since I have not found it, I thought I would describe it here to see if anyone knows if it exists or where I can get it.
I am looking for a title which scrolls multiple lines of text one at a time to a paused position. i.e.
Line #1: Scrolls to top of screen and pauses. Remains.
Line #2: Scrolls to just below line one and pauses. Remains
Line # 3: Scrolls to just below line two and pauses. etc.
I am looking for a way to tell a story on one title screen in a sort of dramatic way. I want my viewer to digest the first part of the information and then have the remaining info scroll up. Does that make sense?
If anyone out there has any clue as to what I am talking about, I'd love to hear from you!

I guess I should had stated that I need a laptop no questions asked, I need it to be portable. If an external monitor was an option I may as well get a desktop... I'm aware of laptop's short comings but what I was hoping to gain from this post was information on current models that fulfill decent photo editing specs, in regards to laptops.. not desktop solutions..
So those expensive models you mentioned would be a good start. Would you mind sharing them with me? I've linked a model I'm pretty interested in, and would like the opinion of the community on it's potential and maybe any other models they know of that can match it.

Using iMovie scrambles my display

Hey guys
Using iMovie 10 for more than 10 mins leads to it scrambling my screen/display. I have to reboot to get it back to normal, does anyone have a fix for this or know why it's happening?
Mac: 24" iMac Mid 2007 (2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo model)
iMovie is latest version (10.0.05 I think)
