Using interlaced and progressive formats in FCP

I am using Sony's HVR-Z1 camera with FCP and wanted to know if I can mix interlaced and progressive captures together. I want to buy the Sony HVR-V1U camera.

it should be fine, just as you can mix PAL and NTSC, HD and SD etc ... ultimately, of course, it will conform to one or the other as per your sequence settings
... and, as you have the camera and you have FCP, why not just try it? post your results so that others may benefit from your findings

Mixing interlaced and progressive HDV footage?

Is anyone mixing interlaced and progressive footage on a FCP 5 timeline? Would you set the timeline up for progressive or interlaced settings? Would there be any loss in quality? I'm specifically wondering how well the true progressive of the JVC HD100 would combine with the "faux" progressive of the Canon A1.

I was hoping someone else would jump in with answers, because I am not familiar with either camera, and can't give you a definite answer, but I would hazard a guess that if you set both cameras to a 1/30th shutter, you would be able to mix the footage, but it would be very difficult to shoot, because it is such a slow shutter.
Other routes, would be converting the footage using compressors advanced formats conversion, and other tricks on the timeline, with removing fields and blending etc.
I think generally though, if you were going to intercut footage, you would notice it, at some level.
Some tests would help you enormously, as would renting a second camera identical to the first.

Best way to work with interlaced and progressive clips in the same timeline

I´m shooting with Sony MC-50E camera in 1920x1080, 50i. When importing with Log & Transfer I can work with ProRes 422 files in interlaced mode. I have to mix the footage with video screencapture which is progressive (ProRes 422). The final videos are for web only so it should end up as progressive H264 videos. I´m getting good result if exporting to H264, 1024x576 with deinterlacing enabled, but exporting to full HD gives typical interlaced lines in the picture. How can I avoid this and what is the best solution for working with both interlaced and progressive clips?

Deinterlace in Compressor using Frame Controls, Best settings. You can reconnect the deinterlaced files to your project, if you've already edited, but you may need to copy and paste the clips in your sequence to a new 25p timeline, then Remove Attributes, Basic Motion.
When you're ready to export your sequence, use Quicktime Movie, Current Settings, Self-contained. Take that file to Compressor to transcode back to h.264.
The Apple T.V. preset is very good.

Hey Narada,
I've had projects where I used both and DVD worked just fine. The only thing I'm not sure about now, though, is what I had my field dominance set to. I'm pretty sure it was set to the default so either lower or higher. This leads me to ask the old pros around here a second question:
What happens to progressive video that's placed in a timeline with a field dominance? Is it no longer treated as progressive?
Anyway, to answer your question my DVDs worked just fine.

Ghosting when combining interlaced and progressive when making a DVD

Hello,
I have a timeline that has a number of different formats including progressive and interlaced video. When exporting a quicktime the video looks fine. When I pop it into DVD Studio Pro and compress into DVD format I'm getting pretty bad ghosting on some of the video.
How can I get rid of the ghosting effect?

In need of assistance using checkbox and conditional formats

I'm trying to set up a command to meet the following:
When I opt to use a checkbox format in say cell "G2" - I would like to setup a conditional format along the lines of...
=IF G2 is TRUE (i.e. checked), then change the color of cell "A2" to some color.
Can anyone help me with the line command for this?

Seems like it should be easy, doesn't it? There are options to doing this, but none are exactly obvious. The problem for you is that conditional formatting is based on the content of the cell being formatted, not some other cell. A typical use is to, say, bold content over a certain limit, or make the display of a zero value invisible.
In Numbers08, you have only a couple of options:
Use an IF-test to alter your content, or use an overlay table or tables. The solution you pick will depend on whether the content was calculated or input directly. If the content was input from the keyboard, that's the most difficult situation since there is no equation to modify.
So, do you want to change the color of the Text, or the Fill, of cell A2? And, how important is this formatting to you? If it involves extra columns or tables and a lot of fussing around, do you still think you need it?

Possible to use iPhoto QT Export Format in FCP?

I'm looking to create some killer slide shows which go far beyond iPhoto's capabilities. I exported 5 photos from iPhoto at 1024x768 for 2 seconds each. The quality was excellent and the file size was only 616 kb.
I pulled up the movie's info in Quick Time and got this:

All I want to do is recreate these settings, but no matter what I try the file is huge and the quality poor. Anybody have any ideas? Are there programs out there more suited to what I am trying to do?

That was a really helpful video on how to apply motion. I'll definitely apply those techniques if I ever figure out how to get my settings correct. Perhaps you can help me with this!
I noticed when you dropped your jpegs into FCP they didn't need any "red" rendering, they had the green render line. I belive I've matched my Audio/Video setup as closely as I can to my stills, the frame sizes are the same, but the stills always needs rendering as soon as I drop them into the sequencer. I don't want to render every slide before editing!
These are the best settings I've managed to find so far, maybe they're way off or you know a better way.

This is my vision: I want to create slide shows that are perfectly synced to music and apply some motion, transitions and fx. Above all, I want to have control over the length of each still to a tenth of a second and have multiple audio tracks to work with so I can mix songs and sound bytes. So far FCP seems to be the only program that will allow me to do all this.
Here's my problem: I want to keep the quality high but file size low (I know this is a contradiction And I'd really like not to have to render everything before I begin editing.

Using .motn and .mov files in FCP

I am starting to use Motion much more in FCP Projects and I was just wondering if I should using .motn files in my FCP timeline in most circumstances or is there a time when actually having the .mov file is better? Other then render time is there much advatange or disadvantage from one to the other?

Better depends on the project and what you need. I look at it this way:
Use .motn
-If I think I will have many revisions to the effect.
Use .mov
-When I have to send the result to some who doesn't have Final Cut
-When I'm sure things are not going to change.

Call Excel SpreadSheet using OLE and set format = text

I am working on an object, where I need to call Excel SpreadSheet using OLE.
In SpreadSheet, I need to show data as text (Without Excel Internal Modifications).
i.e
if i pass 03/2007 as month in excel, it should show 01/2007 not jan-07.
I am trying to use the code as below.
call method of cell 'SET_FORMAT' = text.
set property of text 'CATEGORY' = 4.
this code is not giving me desired output.
Is there any other method i can call? or property I can set?
can somebody pls send me a document with list of all formattiong methods and properties. I will really appreciate the help.

Export QT: Interlaced or Progressive

Hi all,
Wonder if you can help me. When I do an export QT from FCP in DV PAL, I have the option to choose Interlaced or Progressive. Now I 've tried both and both files play OK on my computer. My question is when would you use Interlaced and when would you use Progressive, and why?

Interlacing and Imovie

Does anyone know if imovie interlaces the video.
As one might be able to tell I am not a pro at this.
I want to know so that when I'm converting my imovies to AppleTV I can select the de-interlacing option in visual Hub.

iMovie accepts both interlaced and progressive video and will keep them as such.

I'm not so familiar with Apple TV because currently it seems to be an U.S.-only device. So I don't know whether it (like any other TV-related device like a VHS or DVD player) can handle interlaced video, or if you must deinterlace. Anyone?

FCP and Motion formatting issues with DVCPro 50?

The material is DVCPro 50 NTSC 48khtz. (Item properties indicate that I initially digitized it properly.) My sequence settings are DV50 NTSC 48khtz.
I wanted to create a vignette effect so I exported my clips as a Quicktime (current settings) sequence to Motion. When I was done there I exported the sequence from Motion back to FCP as a DV NTSC movie.
Some of the Motion effected clips will play, look great and then all the sudden I see a black band appear on the East side of the frame. I can stretch it in Motion some but it just degrades the image so I'd rather not.
I'm surely grateful if someone can steer me in the right direction here.

Thanks for the workflow tips and suggestions. I backtracked to my original sequence and found the problem originates there. I have narrow black lines on both sides of all these clips. Since I resized a few clips with moves, I didn't recognize the problem. Now that I'm closer the root of it, any suggestions?
By the way, these problematic clips are intercut with no problem library footage that was also shot on DVCPro 50 and I took in on the same deck.
I cruised the forum for any occurence of a similiar issue and most replies seem to suggest a formatting issue. I don't get it since I think I have everything set up correctly. As a precaution, I also tossed out my preferences using FCP Rescue 5.

Not sure what is causing this, but I might propose an
alternate workflow. Have your clips on the timeline
as you wish, ctrl/right click on them and select
Send To Motion.... Click the
embedded and open Motion ticks, give it a name, then
continue. Do your work in Motion, save, quit, and
fall back into FCP. Your clips may lose their
"anamorphicness" on their round trip, but just
ctrl/right click on the clip and select Item Properties/Format..., then
click on the anamorphic button.
Try this and see if you are still getting the same
problem...

What format are your sources and what are your sequence settings? I'd guess that you're working with h.264 material which is not fcp friendly. If so, use compressor to conver to prores422

How to put AVCHD and AVI formats in a timeline using Adobe production suite?

I shot an event with two different types of cameras (AVCHD camera and tape camera with AVI output). I converted the video of avchd into 1080p first, then put it with the tape output together, the video was jittery. How can I put them together in a timeline to have the best video as possible?

The video was taken from capture card by using the adobe DV Format. I copied the settings of capturing bellow to give you more info of how I did it. I'm not sure if this the right way to do it.
For editing with IEEE1394 (FireWire/i.LINK) DV equipment.
Widescreen NTSC video (16:9 interlaced).
48kHz (16 bit) audio.
Drop-Frame Timecode numbering.

My iPhone 5 wouldn't start after I turned it off a few minutes after writing this. It went into recovery mode and I had no choice but to connect to iTunes on PC and restore.
I restored to factory setting first, just to validate my phone was okay. For a second consecutive iOS update, the iPhone 5 did not update smoothly while connected to PC and iTunes - I had to retry two times before the progress bar for the update showed. (The exact same problem with the restart occured when I updated to 7.0.4.)
The good news is that I was ultimately able to restore the iPhone 5 to factory settings while running iOS 7.0.6. I did have a backup from about a month ago lying around and was able to successfully restore with that as well, so the damage done is almost negligible since I had my contacts, notes, mail, etc. backed up to iCloud.
Once I completed both restores, the sync with iTunes worked fine.
