Using iPad/keyboard dock combo in your lap

Hello all!
My ancient Windows laptop that we use as our secondary computer is dying, and we are seriously considering replacing it with an iPad. Something like 95 percent of the time, this computer is used by my wife, sitting in the recliner in our office, for Web surfing and light email -- in other words, pretty much exactly what the iPad is designed for.
It would sometimes be useful for her to have a real keyboard, though, since she sometimes uses the laptop to take notes at meetings or write longer emails that might get frustrating using the on-screen keyboard (she is a touch-typer). I am wondering how awkward it would be to use the iPad with the keyboard dock not on a solid surface, but sitting in a recliner or on a couch. I know the iPad is quite light but because of the keyboard plugs in in portrait mode it looks like it would be somewhat top-heavy in that configuration.
I know I will get responses here telling me that the iPad is not a laptop replacement and blah blah blah, to which I say pre-emptively: YES, I KNOW THIS. Like I said, virtually all of the use that it would see would be just what it's designed for. I'm sure that using the plug-in keyboard in one's lap would be more awkward than using a real laptop; I'm just trying to find out if it would be doable, so that the iPad wouldn't be completely useless in those scenarios.
Thanks in advance,
Josh

The connector on the Apple keyboard is of bad design. The leverage that the iPad places agains the dock connector tab on the keyboard (because it only docks to the keyboard in the portrait mode) puts too much stress on that connector tab.
I have had to have two keyboards replaced, because the connector tab came loose, and they have only been used on my desk.
Apple should have put a dock connector on the landscape side of the iPad itself (too) so that you could put the iPad into the keyboard in the landscape position, which would put less physical stress on the keyboard connector tab.
I could never imagine using the thing on my lap in the current embodiment.
This keyboard connection makes it almost impossible to use on an aircraft as well, and should be redesigned.

can i use the old iPad keyboard dock for iPad2?

Instead of inserting a ruler behind the iPad, I have found that putting the Keyboard Dock on an incline plane also works.   Once I found the appropriate angle of the incline, then I cut a piece of wood with that same angle, painted it white, andglued the Keyboard Dock to the piece of wood.
Now I don't have to insert a pad or ruler between the iPad and the Dock.  The iPad now leans forward to the correct angle.
The raised angle also helps  me type better due to the tilt.

  • Can the "Apple iPad Keyboard Dock" unlock an iOS device?

I have a iOS device where the touch screen isn't working any more after some water damage, and even replacing the front display doesn't help. It's apparently a problem on the circuitboard that I cannot get fixed.
I only need to be able to unlock it so that I can connect it to iTunes and back it up, so I wonder if this "Apple iPad Keyboard Dock" can be used to unlock the device.
Does someone own this keyboard and could try this? Can you unlock the iPad or iPhone and enter a passcode after pressing the wake button, without having the swipe on the screen?

No.  The iPad Keyboard Dock connects to the iPad through 30 pin connector on the iPad.  Your PC wouldn't have that connector.
Instead, you should just get a USB keyboard, which basic models are often just $20.

  • IPad Keyboard Dock and Keynote

The *iPad Keyboard Dock* arrived, but when I attempt to use it with iPad Keynote_, all of the slides remain sideways_, which means that for all practical purposes, the iPad Keyboard is useless.
Is anyone else having the same problem, or is it just me?

It is not a fault, it is by design in Keynote.
Keynote only operates in Landscape mode as slides are landscape shaped and displayed only in landscape. If you watch the Keynote demo here :-
    http://www.apple.com/ipad/features/keynote.html
It states at about 20 seconds in "because slides are horizontal it works in landscape mode"
I'm afraid you will have to do your Keynote docs when not using the dock.

  • Does iPad Keyboard Dock Work With iPhone?

Does the new iPad Keyboard Dock work with the iPhone? If you put an iPhone 3GS into it, will you be able to use the physical keyboard to type on the iPhone's screen?

I have an iPad keyboard dock that I used with the orignal iPad.  Tonight I found it in a dusty closet and wondered if it would work with my iphone 4s.  Plugged it which wasn't particularly easy but when I got the angle right, it worked as I was able to start a message in Notes.  But it did pop up a message after exiting Notes that this device is not compatible with the iphone or something to that effect.  I did not have the dock connected to a power supply so I don't know if it will permit typing and charging.  But it will allow you to type on the iPhone 4s at least in Notes:)

    Hi and welcome..
Connect your iPad to your computer. Launch iTunes. Make sure your iPad is recognized in iTunes under Devices on the left.

  • IPad Keyboard Dock Not Working

I have a new iPad keyboard dock. Every 3-5 minutes I get a message on my iPad "This accessory requires an application you do not have installed. Would you like to install it from the app store?" If I click Yes, it takes me to the store, but no applications are listed. I've searched through everything and cannot find any information about a software requirement. If I click No, nothing happens. Either way, the keyboard stops working after the message appears and I have to take the iPad out and add it back to the device to get it to start working again. Any thoughts?

  • IPad Keyboard Dock connects but some keys do not work.

My iPad Keyboard Dock connects to my iPad and certain keys work (qweryuio are the only working keys). I have tried using a 12" ruler but this makes no difference. I have also turned my iPad off and on again but this makes no difference.  It also doesn't seem to make any difference to use the connector.  Has anybody got any solutions I could try.
    many thanks,

    Hi Blissful Living,
Do you have another device you can test the Keyboard Dock with?
Were you using the ruler to improve the "fit" and connections?
Did the Keyboard work in the past?
It seems really suspicious that one row of keys work and other rows don't.  Keyboards operate as a grid of rows and colums and one failure mode is a row (or rows) or a column stops working.
I would definitely test this with another iPad, or even iPhone?

  • Ipad Keyboard Dock not recognising shift+1-9

My iPad Keyboard Dock was working beautifully with both my iPad (1) and iPhone (3GS) until I docked this afternoon. All the keys are responsive, including the numerical keys. They all respond with ctrl, alt and cmd pressed. However, the numerical keys from 1 - 9 will not respond when either shift key is pressed. All other keys work fine (I'm using it now, but having to use on screen keyboard to open brackets). It is the same on both the iPad and iPhone.
Does anyone have any suggestions to fix this? Or am I looking at a new keyboard (or the inconvenience of using the Onscreen Keyboard for symbols)
    Thanks

i been using my ipad keyboard dock and never appear that, just when i try with iphone it say no compatible but with ipad never, sorry.

  • I just bought an ipad 2 and the iPad keyboard dock and can't get them to work.  What do I need to do?

I just bought an iPad 2 and a iPad keyboard dock and can't get them to work together.  What do I need to do?

    Hello,
You would need to pair the Apple Remote with the receiver. So I would use the generic Mac/PC receiver and follow these instructions:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1619
If that doesn't work then check in System Profiler to see if the IR receiver has been recognized by the PowerBook's hardware. You may require the install of drivers for this device to be recognized.
    Best of luck

  • Lightning to 30-pin Adapter works great with iPad Keyboard Dock

In case anyone was wondering, the Lightnng to 30-pin Adapter works great with the original iPad Keyboard Dock and an iPhone 5. In fact it is better than the 4S was, as that tended to pop out. The Lightning adapter stays in place, and there is plenty of support in the back plastic to keep the iPhone in place, with any tiny stress happening at the Dock connector end: the Lightning connector itself seems very solid indeed. All the keys work, and charging is fine.
(In answer to the implicit question: my employer blocks email at work on its systems, and it's convenient to have the keyboard hold the phone in place, and also charge it, which is the problem with the Bluetooth keyboard.)

Might be a question better asked of the manufacturer of the iHome device.

  • Ipad keyboard docki

I have problems with my ipad keyboard dock. The signs up the numbers doesn´t work correctly. When I click shift 6 it appears / and not

  • Apple iPad Keyboard Dock or Apple Wireless Keyboard

I have the iPad 1 (the original one) and I would like to ask if the Apple iPad Keyboard Dock is better than the Apple Wireless Keyboard. Thank you

The keyboard with dock probably doesn't require batteries, but is a bit more bulky. It also doesn't suffer from the key stroke reppppppeat like the BT version does once in a while in some apps. However, I opted for the BT version.

  • Apple iPad Keyboard Dock - Portuguese???

Anybody knows if it will be the iPad Keyboard Dock in Portuguese???

I don't believe so. However, there are Bluetooth keyboards that will work with iPad. Just make sure it has the Mac Portuguese layout shown here.

  • Ipad Keyboard Dock Stuck in Lock Mode

    Hello,
I got an Ipad today, but we're having some problems. Any help is greatly appreciated.
Okay, so it was working fine at first. We bought the Ipad keyboard dock, plugged it in, and then started having problems. Soon after plugging it to the dock, the touch screen stopped responding to touch. We unhooked the ipad from the keyboard dock, but it was still unresponsive to touch. I realize that there is a lock button in the top right corner of the keyboard dock, but that isn't working. That button seems to be operating as a sleep/wake button.
I tried restarting it by holding the sleep/wake button and the home button simultaneously, but that didn't work. The problem is, I can't do the "slide to power off," because the screen is unresponsive to touch. I hooked the ipad back up to the computer and did a full restore, but it is still unresponsive to touch.
I can still rotate the screen; I can put the ipad to sleep. When I put it on the keyboard dock, the volume and brightness controls function.
Any help would be great. Thanks!

Thanks. Yeah, we called an Apple technician today, told him the problem, and he said that it is probably defective. We have a warranty, so we are mailing in this broken IPad. A new one will be shipped to us.
The weird thing is, the IPad didn't stop responding to touch until we attached it to the keyboard dock. The IPad could have been defective from the start, but I hope that the keyboard won't do the same thing to the new IPad.
