Using iPad when travelling to Europe

Can I use my iPad in Italy and other places in Europe. Am only interested in connecting via WiFi?
Is there anything special I need to do this?

Here is my experience April 2014   (Ipad 4)
I purchased a Lebara sim card (data only) in Amsterdam near the central train station from Phone Point, (Address: Haring Pakkers--Steeg2-4, 1012 LR).    It was on a small side street, not a main street where prices are much higher. The card worked all over Holland. The young man was very helpful, helped me decide how many gigs I would need, and made sure it was connected before I left the store. I felt he was honest. He changed the APN number. (If you have a current sim card, be sure to take a picture on your ipad in Settings before the number is changed, so you can change back when you return to the USA. I have a Verizion sim card, but it automatically changed when I reinserted it back in my iPad when I came back to Los Angeles.)
When I arrived in Prague, I purchased a data sim card from Vodafone at the main train station. Again, the young man who waited on me was very helpful.   He changed my APN and made sure it worked before I left the store.
If you change sim cards like I did, take a picture in Settings of the APN number. I returned to Holland, so I used the Lebara sim card again after returning from Prague. I had the APN pic in my Camera Roll, so I referred to the picture to change the APN.
You will need an adapter to charge your iPad.

and it has a database to find wifi hotspots, and an offline database you can download as well. Seems to do pretty well for me.
At the very least you could look at it and see what entries it has for where you're going, just to get an idea.

All he needs is the appropriate plug adapter for the country he's visiting so he can charge the iPad. The wifi should just work with all public wifi's he will encounter. Of course, he'll need to log in and pay for most.

Apple power supplies are made to use from 110 to 230 volts without any converter required
You will need adapters to get the pins to fit the wall sockets but that is it

You have to locate acessible WiFi networks. Most major hotels now have WiFi.

You can either put them in "Flight Mode" ( Found in settings. This feature disables 3G, 4G and Wifi), or you can go into your settings and turn off mobile networking ( also found in settings, this allows you to connect to wifi, but disables mobile networking)

When you say the iPad is your sister's and was reset, did you remove all settings and set it up with your Apple ID? If not, and it still has your sister's Apple ID then the security questions are hers and you must use her answers.

Go to the mall and buy a Globe (local telecom) Tattoo sim, and cut it down to microsim size (it's easy. Google is your friend). It comes loaded with quite a bit of funds already, but I don't recall how much. Shut off your iPad, install the Globe sim, and re-start. Follow these instructions:
* Go to Settings.
* Press Reset then Reset Network Settings.
* Go to Cellular Data.
* Press APN.
* Change APN to: http.globe.com.ph (for pre-paid service)
* Deactivate Wi-Fi to be able to browse using the SIM (click Wi-Fi menu, turn-off)
Data rate is Php5/15 minutes or something along those lines. Very reasonable. 3G data speeds may vary quite a bit in Manila. You can do something similar with SMART (the other major cell carrier), but I don't have that set up.

You can't used 3G when traveling to another country

I live in Canada but I found a new problem with AT&T when trying to get your 3G working when you travel to the states. You have to sign up with with a US address for the 3G to work. I don't have a US address and credit card too only one from Canada. It's a catch 22. Apple says it's unlocked but you can't used unless you have a US address.
So I would like to know how can you use iPad 3G when you travel to US or any other place in the world.. WiFi yes but why buy a 3G when you can't connect to AT&T. AT&T should make plans for people who travel in the US.

The iPad 3G was just released in the U.S., and it isn't available in other countries yet. Obviously the 3G sold in the U.S. is currently set up to have a data plan with AT&T. In order to have a data plan with AT&T for the iPad at the present time, you need to have a credit card with a U.S. billing address, and the billing address must be in an area where AT&T has coverage. They have coverage in most or many places, but not all. No carrier in the U.S. has 100% coverage over every square mile.
This may change for international travelers, but the iPad 3G was just released in the U.S. on Friday and isn't available in any other countries yet.

This might be of interest, seems apple are encouraging the record companies to improve their source files for submission to the itunes store. Any improvement in audio quality is to be welcomed.

The mastered for itunes document in the first link contains a comment about keeping the highest quality masters in our systems will allow for future improvements to your music.
Was reading a couple of online blogs abut this and most people appear to be positive about the improvements, I had a listen and compared some previous CD against the same track in the mastered for itunes list and its appears to be an improvement (using Grado Labs SR80 phones not white ear buds), more open sounding.
Some CDs mastered years ago are very poor and even some recent ones are poorly mastered (loudness, bright) suppose it depends on the care put in at source that counts.

Are ipad maps better than a satnav when travelling in europe?

I'll be travelling in England, France and Ireland later on in the year and am wondering whether I can use my ipad for maps or if it is cheaper to buy a satnav. I have heard that data charges are high.

Satellite navigation systems are dedicated to their tasks without the need for external data feeds (except for the map updates you will perform probably only before you leave).
Also, iPads displayed for all the world to see seems a juicer theft target than a tiny unglamorous GPS box.

There's no need to worry yourself over things like this, unless the information is highly confidential...
Few incidents occur where someone will actually bother to log onto a public network and then hack into others' computers/devices in order to gain access to information such as credit card numbers etc... computer viruses and trojans are much better designed for this kind of job.
If security really is a concern, consider using a VPN to access the internet after you have connected to a network.

Charging iPad when travelling overseas

I bought the PlugBug World iPad/iPhone Charger (I live in Canada). When I travel to Australia can I just plug my iPad in with it, or do I need something to convert the power too?
