Using Iphone 3G in Japan
I am traveling to Japan next week and want to be able to use my iphone over there. Someone told me that the "roaming" or something needs to be changed...? I'm really not too sure what is required so my phone will work there so I can make and receive calls and texts. Am I able to make changes to the settings on my phone so it will work in Japan?

NTT DoCoMo and SoftBank Mobile (formerly Vodafone) both have UMTS 2100 networks in Japan - which is supported by the iPhone.
Call your own provider and make sure that international roaming will be enabled on your phone.
Be aware that international roaming might cost you an arm and a leg.

You can use your iPhone 4 in Malaysia with a Japanese sim card, but you'll need to enable the data roaming/international feature with your phone comapny/carrier in Japan to be able to use the phone.
Your other option is to get your phone unlocked by your phone comapny/carrier so that you can then insert local sim cards when you travel.
The only ones who can unlock your phone is your phone comapny/carrier in Japan so you need to contact them directly to ask them if they offer unlocking - if not then you are out of luck and have to use the data roaming method. -

There is not a thing you can do except get the Apple ID and password of the previous owner...that iPhone is in Activation Lock mode and cannot be unlocked any other way. The Activation Lock is an anti-theft protection that cannot be bypassed. You very well may have a stolen iPhone so try contacting the who you bought it from and get your money back.

There are no officially unlocked iPhones sold in Japan & none of the Japanese carriers...which include Softbank...offer official unlocking for the iPhone. There is no way to get any Japanese iPhone officially unlocked.

If you got the phone from Softbank in Japan the phone will work in Singapore but only roaming with Softbanks sim. They do not unlock iphones bought from them.

Thanks, After changing my settings in face time per your suggestion, (it needed to be done), I turned off cellular data and data roaming and made a call using face time. It worked! Great way to stay in touch while overseas without the need for those egregious phone data plans.
