Using Iphone 4S as an Ipod in car

In my car I have a USB connector that I use to connect to my Iphone 4S.  This both charges the phone which is great but more importantly it allows me to use the cars In Car Entertainment system to go through my music.  I also connect the phone to the car using Bluetooth for the inbuilt Hands Free.  The problem is, after about 2 minutes, when i'm playing music through the USB the sound goes as I believe that the phone is switching off the USB output in favour of the Bluetooth.
I can, if I want, play the music through Bluetooth which works but doesn't give me as much flexibility with regards picking my music (just forward and back tracks).
Any idea if there is a setting which allows me to keep the USB as a selected output until such time as the phone rings in which case i'd want it to automatically switch back to the bluetooth.
I would point out that when I first bought the car in September 2011 this issue wasn't present but an update on the phone probably changed something.  I didn't notice at first so can't tell which update it might have been.

I've unplugged the phone an then tried replugging it in again as at first I thought it was a dodgy connection with the lead (i've tried 2 with the same result) so i'm not sure that's the solution.  It may be that the car is constantly checking the connection I guess which re-establishes the bluetooth as the priority but it doesn't explain why it worked at one time and now doesn't.  One thing I should say is that i've also tried this with my older Iphone 4 and have the same result.  Thanks for the reply though.  Anyone else got any ideas?

  • Using iPhone 5S as an iPod

If I buy an unlocked iPhone 5S with an unactivated t-mobil SIM card installed from the apple store, will i be able to use this phone as an ipod right when i get it if i never activate the SIM card? or wont it work at all?

I bought an unlocked iPhone 5s (32 GB, unlocked, T-Mobile SIM installed at factory) from the online Apple store for my wife as a Christmas present (our first smartphone).  When she opens it on Christmas day, will she be able to use it out of the box as an iPod, or is there something she needs to do first?
We have a 4th gen iPod touch and wi-fi, so she's familiar with the basics.  I'm afraid T-Mobile and Apple Store will both be jammed up on Christmas and for days afterwards, so it'd be nice if she could just use it out of the box, without waiting to activate with T-Mobile.

  • Using iPhone as only a ipod

OK dont ask why but I prefer having my iphone and a separate ipod. With that being said, I lost my ipod (so sad) With the anticipated ipod due next month I was wondering if I could use my existing iphone as a ipod w/wifi (aka ipod touch)
    my concerns are:
    1. When I activate the new iphone, will my mac render my current iphone unusable (locked up) when I resync it on the same computer as the new iphone?
    2. Will the wi-fi still work?
    3. Will it still produce the same buzzing near audio speakers? I'd be interested hearing from those who have done something similar to this already.
    Thanks!

Take the SIM out of the old iPhone and place it in the new iPhone. Connect to iTunes and activate the new phone. When you're done, take the SIM out and replace it in the old phone and resync that one.
    2. Will the wi-fi still work?
Wifi will work without the SIM card after the phone is activated.

  • Using iPhone 3Gs as an iPod Touch, while using my new Verizon iPhone 4 as a phone? Lost original sim?

Well, Im at a loss for this one. A few weeks ago I jumped over to verizon predicting that Id rather get an iPhone 4 and wade through the intermediate (iPhone 4s, iPhone 3GS) release until the iPhone 5. I planned on using my old iPhone 3Gs (AT&T, of course) as an iPod Touch. I tossed the original sim figuring there was no need for it in fear that I could somehow reactivate my old contract. I restored the iPhone 3GS as a method of erasing everything and starting fresh, as well as updating the firmware however now It is asking me to "Activate" my iPhone and im at a loss of what to do. Is there any hope? or must I resort to Craigslist to selvedge some cash out of this old friend?

    You'll need a sim card.

  • Hello, I have the same problem.  As soon as the connection is made it ends saying "Call ended" I have no idea how to fix it , I use FaceTime Everyday and it was normal until yesterday it just happened to be like this.Im using  iPhone 4 to call iPod

iPhone cannot make FaceTime call to my friend's iPod.
I don't know what to do , all I know is it ended immediately as soon as it finished connecting ..
please help Me ! Anyone know how to fix it ?
I used FaceTime everyday and night using wifi , I love using it to call my friend .
It stopped connecting since yesterday ... I don't know what to do

I have taken it back to the Apple store genius bar, but they say they don't see anything wrong. Well unless you use it all day and experience the problems when they happen, you wont see anything wrong. But there are lots wrong with it. But this would be the same store as I purchased the phone. And they backed up my old Iphone 4, but were not able to get anything to load back onto my new phone. So, I lost pretty much everything. But over time, some of my contacts have started showing up, although i am still missing over 800 of them.

  • Using iphone while charging in home or car??

Could that create any battery problems if done daily? I use the phone off and on for about 6 hours and the battery takes a dive then. I have to start switching off the wifi as I am not in that environ most of the time. Thanks!

If you think about it, keeping the phone plugged in limits the amount of cycles on your battery so that's a plus. If your phone is dead after 6 hours of off and on use (not solid talk time) and plummets from some battery to none, then you might want to talk to Apple. Otherwise I would recommend NOT USING a case while talking with the charger connected because charging tends to heat up electronics and heat is an enemy of battery life. Of course after a short while the relevant question will become 'Why is the phone cable so short?????'
Most of my electrical receptacles are at ground level, not into talking while laying on the floor. Just odd, considering the possible lengths of USB cables and the fact that some thought was put into the iPhone cable (no squeeze locks).
I always want my electronic devices charged up, I don't see that as unreasonable so I'd say you're fine as long as the device doesn't get extremely hot.

  • Using iPhone as a iPod only?

My current cellphone plan won't expire till the end of this year, but I really would like to get an iPhone..
Do I HAVE TO have an AT&T account to use iPhone? Can't I use iPhone just as an iPod?? I've heard that you can use bluetooth to use the internet on iPhone...
Thanks for any information you may have.

Using any iPhone features requires activation through iTunes which includes an account with the iTunes store and an account with AT&T. Once that is achieved, you can use all the features, and the non-GSM features even without access to the AT&T network.
There is Wi-Fi on the iPhone, but its Bluetooth can't access the Internet.

  • Friend gave me used iphone3-we used it for 6 mos -now when we synced it to PC, our used iphone now has the contents of our existing iPod - lost everything that was on our used iphone!!  How to get it all back (we only care about home videos/photos).  Help

A friend gave us her used iphone.  We used it to take home videos and photos, and now that we synced it to our PC it has lost everything on it, and it has been replaced with the contents of our already existing iPod.  In other words, all our music, photos and apps that were on our existing itunes account (used with our IPOD) etc, have been put into this used iPhone.  Is there any way to get back all that stuff (mainly just want our home videos and photos back!!)  Where on earth are they?  Are they stored somewhere on my PC?  I feel so dumb for syncing it now, and very sad for having lost my precious videos of my kids.
    Thanks for helping!

    kaeandcolesmon,
If you open the recovery drive (partition) it should only have a single folder (Recovery).
To make sure that your not saving restore points to that drive.
    See:
Start, Control Panel, System, System Protection tab. Make sure the D drive partition is set to OFF so that it does not save there.

  • I want to use my old iPhone 3GS as an Ipod. Nothing is working?

I'm tired of wasting battery on my iPhone 4 to listen to music, so I wanted to use my old iPhone 3GS as an iPod. I read you had to have a sim card inserted in the phone, regardless if it's activated. So I put the old one inside, but when I connect it to my computer, it won't charge, or sync with iTunes. It's definitely not my charger because both of my phones charge in a wall outlet, and my iPhone 4 charges through the computer. Just not the iPhone 3GS.... I'm going on vacations with long car rides and would like to use this. Help please!

  • Using iPhone as if it was an iPod touch???

Okay so I want a iPhone, but if don't wan to pay that expensive monthly bill and that security deposit so is it possible for me to buy an used iPhone on eBay and use it a if it was an iPod touch with a camera? I don't care about not being able to make phone calls, an if I wan the Internet I can just use wifi right?
And another thing, if I do get a used iPhone and sync it to my iTunes account won't that AT&T activation page come up?

I have a first generation iPhone which is not activated with AT&T that I've used as an iPod Touch since purchasing an iPhone 3G. I must have the no longer activated SIM card inserted in my first generation iPhone that was used when the iPhone was activated with AT&T in order to install a firmware update, or to restore the iPhone with iTunes if needed or wanted.
If you purchase this used iPhone without the no longer activated SIM card included (which isn't likely), you won't be able to install a firmware update, or restore the iPhone with iTunes if needed or wanted.
The AT&T activation page will come up if you insert a new un-activated SIM card in the iPhone followed by connecting the iPhone to iTunes. Other than that, the activation page will not come up.
I suggest purchasing an iPod Touch instead.

  • How do i use an iphone 5 as an ipod

how do i use an iphone 5 as an ipod

Lawrence, any idea why this article now has the designation of being "archived" and "no longer updated by Apple"? Is it because there's nothing left to add or update at this point or because it's no longer required to swap SIM cards? (I don't know if that's true just trying to figure it out.)
I didn't take out my wife's original SIM card in turning her iPhone 4s into an iPod Touch for my son and almost everything has gone smoothly except for two things:
Facetime had a few issues at first but I've straightned them out.
I still see "activation" error messages after restarting. This I'd like to get ironed out because it's annoying, so is the best course of action still to take out the old SIM, put in the SIM from my wife's new iPhone, restore the old one with new SIM in it, and then once everything is set up correctly return the new sim to the new phone?
I think if I understood more clearly why this SIM swapping is necessary, I would be able to answer some of my own questions.

  • How do I activate a used iPhone 3 with no SIM card for use as an ipod touch?

How do I activate a used iPhone 3G with no SIM card for use like an iPod Touch? It was apparently on AT&T previously and I have another iPhone 3 that is active on AT&T if that is helpful. Thanks!

    Copied from the link provided.
Follow these steps to use your iPhone without a wireless service plan:
Insert the SIM card from your new, activated iPhone or one that was previously used to activate the original iPhone.
Connect the iPhone to iTunes on a computer connected to the Internet.
Once iTunes activates the device, you're free to use the iPhone as if it were an iPod touch.
