Using iPhone 4S as iPod touch, specifically FaceTime and upgrades

I'm thinking of getting a noniphone and want to make sure that as long as I keep my sim I can use the iPhone as a iPod touch including FaceTime and I'll be able to upgrade to newest iOS whenever it comes out?

This is a general comment, not directed to anyone, and not to be taken personally by anyone. This ongoing screw up with the new upgrade (5.0.1) is getting to be a **** SHAME. In no way can APPLE or anyone else for that matter not know by now that the upgrade is terribly flawed. The Ipod machines themselves are super great products, and I enjoy mine to the max. However the upgrade once applied ruins it. And at least, not to my current knowledge, there haven't been any fixes forcoming.
In my opinion Apple should own up to that fact and warn folks that, even though the upgrade was presented with the best intentions, IT JUST AIN"T WORKING. And not to download it until further notice. This noticication could be done through the retail sales outlet, online, what ever.
I liken this to a pharmaceutical coming out with a new vaccine, encourage everyone to use it, then discover it's bad to the degree it causes it uses to become sick. Rather then pull the vaccine they keep on allowing unsuspecting ones to continue to vaccinate, and become sick. What a shame!

What do I have to do to use my iPhone 4 as an IPod touch? I currently have a 4 and am no longer going to use it as a phone but I would to keep it as a newer touch with a camera.

You can't do anything with an iPhone until it is activated. Activating it doesn't mean it is activating it with service, it only activates the phone to work as an iPod Touch. The sim doesn't need to be activated either, it only has to be a valid sim and properly inserted. Once activated, it will be an iPod Touch without phone service.

I currently have an iPhone 5 that I bought through Sprint. It's on a cellphone plan through Sprint as well. I'm really wanting to cut some financial corners and am hoping that it is possible to cancel my Sprint services but still be able to use the phone as an iPod. I suppose I just need a walk through on how to make this happen. Once I terminate my sprint service, can I just continue using the phone or are there steps in between that? Also, I know I there are apps that you can download in order to still be able to text and make calls. Could someone tell me what those are? For example, would GoogleVoice work or not?

As far as texting and making calls, apps such as Pinger or TextFree work wifi/3G in a VoIP manor. It gives you a real phone number that you can purchase minutes (or earn them in certain ways) and it gives you free unlimited texting. As far as using the iPhone as an iPod Touch, I have not found anyhting pointing to the idea that it would not work. It would be a wifi-only iPod Touch 5, but it SHOULD still work.

I'm looking to purchase an iPhone 4 on Ebay to convert to an iPod Touch, mainly because of the highly superior camera and specs, but I know that you need a MicroSIM card to activate the phone. The phone I'm looking at is a Verizon version, so I was wondering if I could be able to just purchase a blank Verison SIM on Ebay, since they're only a few dollars? Unfortunately, none of my friends or nearby family have SIMs I can use as all of their phones don't have them, so I'm hoping I'm not in a pickle here. lol

So should I look for an iPhone from a specific carrier? I'm really trying to make caving into getting the iPod Touch 4th Gen a last resort because I know they're techincally inferior, and I take a lot of photos and would love to have the extra horsepower.

Use iPhone 4s as iPod Touch, Can't Activate

Hello all,
I have an old Sprint 4s that I'd like to keep using as an iPod Touch and don't need cell service on. I wiped it clean when I got my new phone and haven't touched it in about a year. I turned it on and it started to take me through the activation process but I keep getting the error message "Your iPhone could not be activated because the activation server is temporarily unavailable" So I plugged it into iTunes and when I click the on the iPhone in iTunes I get a message that says "Your request couldn't be processed. We're sorry, but there was an error processing your request. Please try again later." I tried restoring the phone and got the same messages. Then I tried putting the phone in recovery mode, restoring it, and I got the same messages after it updated the ios.
I had a chat session with Apple and after some troubleshooting to do things I had already done, they transferred me to a supervisor who basically said "you need a support sim, go search the forums." Anybody know anything about this? Is the sim card really the problem, and how do I get a support sim card?

The iPhone 4S on Sprint wouldn't have required any SIM to activate. It would only have used a SIM for international roaming. Domestically, it would simply be working on the CDMA network. As I recall, the phones generally had to be connected to a computer with iTunes installed in order to activate them. What the OP did should have worked.

I recently bought the iphone 6 Plus. I'd like to use my iphone 4S as an ipod touch for my son. If I continue to use my applet ID to access the App store on the 4S will it affect my storage of anything on my 6 Plus? I don't want to reset the 4S phone since there are many apps on there my children use. What steps do I need to take in order to keep the 4S as is, and ensure the contents of the 4S don't get backed up to my 6 Plus. Also, if I don't have a text/phone plan for the 4S can my son still text from the 4S using WiFi?

The phone must have a SIM in it in order for the steps in the article to be completed. It does not have to be an active one, but the phone needs to have one present.
A SIM is also necessary if you restore or update the phone. The process will not complete without a SIM present.

Resolution Steps: iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch library corrupted and showing ghost entries which will not play or music that is on the device in iTunes but inaccessible.

Issue: iOS Music application either has items listed in the library that will not play; or has an empty library but iTunes reports that music is present on the device and taking up space; or a combination of these issues coupled with the inability to resolve the problem through the standard resolution steps of disabling music syncing to remove all music and then re-enabling or by enabling "manually manage library" and removing the items.
Additionally, attempting to restore from a back-up does not resolve the issue and the default response from the Apple Support Community is to factory restore the device and treat as new device, resulting in loss of all settings and basically starting from scratch.
Cause of issue: Corrupted iOS device iTunes library (MediaLibrary.sqlitedb). This database stores the iTunes Media records and related information such as playcount, lyrics etc. It does not store information and settings regarding iOS Applications as far as I am aware so this should be safe.
Resolution Steps:
Perform a back-up to your local computer rather than iCloud if practical. This will be quicker in the event of issues.
Download a iOS device manager such as Phone View (http://www.ecamm.com/mac/phoneview/) which will allow you to directly access the file structure of the device. (This will NOT require an illegal jailbreak to be performed!)
Enable the Advanced View mode so the entire disk structure is accessible.
Browse to the following file: iTunes_Control/iTunes/MediaLibrary.sqlitedb
Rename MediaLibrary.sqlitedb to MediaLibrary.sqlitedb-backup or similar
Hold down POWER and HOME on your iOS device until the Apple logo appears. Release both buttons.
When device has rebooted, connect to iTunes and synchronise it.
iTunes will detect that the Media Library on the device is missing and recreate it based on the items that it has listed in the iTunes synchronisation record for the device.

I don't have a large library of music on my iPhone 4s since I've only had it since Oct 2012, but since the update to iTunes 11 in early December, my album artwork has been all messed up. Our household has two IPhones, two IPod Touches, 1 IPad and 1 computer. we want to have it all under the same Apple ID for the purpose of Home Sharing, but my two kids iPODs cannot use their facetime or messaging becuase it shows they are on my iphone.

Use Skype video via wifi. Works better that FaceTime IMPO, and you can talk to Android phones.

I have been trying to use the camera on my iPod Touch with FaceTime. Will it work? How do I sign in? When I click on Preferences the preferences window does not appear, and preferences in the drop down menu becomes greyed out. I am using an older Apple Cinema Display. Also Apple doesn't show the iSight camera for sale on the website.

Pairing an iPod touch to the computer to use the camera is not supported, but you can use any webcam that can be plugged into the computer.

For a long time, my iphone would see my home network intermittently, but it would always drop the signal. I have been searching the web to try to find a way to resolve this issue. Recently the wifi connectivity seems to have gone completely out.
I just want to allow my kids to use it as an ipod touch.

I actually performed a complete restore on the phone, but it did not work. I then took the phone in to the Apple genius bar, and they diagnosed it to have damaged wifi hardware. Thank you all for your suggestions.

I would like tlo use my original iPhone as a iPod Touch but I am unable to activate or unblock the SIM card. I cannot use my iPhone 4 SIM car on the original as it is a different size.

I did borrow the SIM card from a friends old 3G he is using an an iPod Touch. It worked.
Even more interesting is that when I placed the "problem" SIM card in the 3G it merely indicated the SIM was locked but otherwise works as intended - an iPhone without cellular service - an iPod Touch.
No idea why the 1st gen iPhone will not work with its own SIM but its SIM works in a 3G.
