Using iphone as Broadband modem

does anyone know whether it's possible to configure the iphone to act as a broadband modem for Laptop computer to connect to the internet ?
cheers

It is generally possible to enable or include Bluetooth profiles, such as the DUN [Dial Up Networking] profile required to connect a computer to the internet via Bluetooth by applying an approved firmware updater, but…
…as a practical matter, this just is not going to happen. at&t has no interest in promoting this concept, particularly at the comparatively 'discounted' data plan rates associated with the iPhone.
If DUN connections are really important to you, and you don't want to use a separate data card designed specifically for this purpose, take an inexpensive at&t supplied or unlocked GSM mobile handset capable of performing in this manner along with you, slip the SIM out of the iPhone and into your 'data modem handset' for the duration of your connection session. Be sure to watch how frequently you do this and for what duration, as 'unlimited' data is not really unlimited, with at&t data plans. There is no better explanation of this issue than that offered by the terms and conditions of your data plan…

  • How to use iPhone as a modem for MBP

    bonjour all,
after looking up information about how to use my iPhone 3G as a modem to my late 2008 MPB i found a APP called NetShare that was removed by Apple for reasons unknown yet, and i was hoping that with a little luck there might be an alternative.
if you have any information please pass it on,
    Cheers,
    Sean

I'm from the US, and there has been no alternative because Apple doesn't want people to be able to tether on the iPhone just yet. Apparently they will be releasing tethering to iPhone users here soon, but Apple took Netshare down because of that fact.
Now I don't know if there is anything else available in Paris, but you might want to contact Apple or your cell carrier and ask them, they would have a better idea about it.

  • Using iphone as a modem for your home PC

I currently have a motorola slvr that I use as a modem on my home computer by connecting with the usb cable. It's the only way I can get internet at home right now.
Has anyone tried this with the iphone? I want to buy one in the next few weeks, but this may sway my decision.
    Thanks!!

This is not an option for the iphone at this point.

  • 2011 MacBook Pro experiencing Kernel Panics when using iPhone 4 as modem

Recently purchased a custom MacBook Pro 15" with the upgraded 2.3 ghz quad core i7 processor. I immediately installed 8 GB of Ram and a 750GB 7200 speed HD from OWC when the unit arrived. All was well when testing from home, and had zero issues after using the Mac assistant to pull apps and user data from my old MBP, which I then sold on ebay.
Brought my new MBP to work, where I use my iPhone 4 (not jailbroken) to data share, using the personal hotspot. I connect the iPhone 4 to the MBP via USB, to keep the battery on the iPhone 4 charged.
While at work, I almost immediately started getting chain Kernel Panics on the new MBP. After hard powering down and restarting, the Kernel Panics would return at unpredictable intervals, sometimes an hour or more, sometimes within seconds of booting. I immediately suspected the RAM from OWC, as bad ram is the leading cause of Kernel Panics, according to a quick google search. So here is what I did in order, although keep in mind that this took place over a period of weeks, where I would intermittently go days w/out a Kernel Panic, and I was going crazy trying to figure this out.
    1. Took apart machine and re-seated OWC Ram-did not fix
    2. Attempted to confirm OWC RAM was bad before sending back to OWC, moved to step 3
    3. Put Apple Hardware Test DVD in and let it run the extended hardware test in loop mode over a weekend (72 hours), with no report of any hardware failure
    4. Some reports on the internet seemed to indicate the Apple Hardware test was not always reliable in discovering bad ram, so I purchased memtest, which I then looped and ran for 12 hours to test ram, with no report of failure.
    5. Performed clean install of OS X 10.6 from Apple DVD, to include wiping the drive-Kernel Panics remained.
    6. Removed OWC ram and installed Apple original Ram-Kernel Panics remained
    7. Realized that at home I was on WiFi, and was not getting Kernel Panics (at least none that I could remember over the course of 2 weeks)
    8. Tested w/ iPhone 4 connected via USB as personal Hot Spot, and Kernel Panics occurred regularly.
    9. Tested w/ iPhone 4 connected via WiFi as personal Hot Spot, and Kernel Panics have not returned (running 6 hours so far w/out Kernel Panic)
At the beginning I had a Kensington Turbo Mouse connected as well, but over time I unplugged it to remove it from my troubleshooting list. At this point I must conclude that when using the iPhone 4 to data share over USB is the cause of my Kernel Panics.
All of the above was the long winded version of, my iPhone 4 is crashing my Mac. I just wanted interested parties to know what I've done already before suggestions are made.
Has anyone else experienced this issue? Anyone using their iPhone 4 to data share and connecting via USB w/out experiencing Kernel Panics? Anyone have any thoughts/ideas as to why this would occur?
FWIW, I've tried more than one USB cable to connect the iPhone to my MBP, and experienced Kernel Panics w/ both cables. I also fully restored my iPhone 4 when the recent 4.3 iOS update was released, so I don't think it's a software issue w/ the iPhone. I do not have a second iPhone 4 to test with, I also do not have a second Mac to test with.
Thanks up front for your thoughts and/or assistance.
    Bill

    Hi everyone !
I'm new on this forum (and French btw, so I apologize in advance for any mistake (: )
I've bought the brand new MBP 13' few weeks ago, and I kept having this problem until now, I just installed K64 Enabler, and it seems to work perfectly, so I wanted you all to know it
Thanks for all the help you brought me !
Hope Apple will fix this once for all !
    See you !

  • Can I use iPhone as a modem?

Hey everyone. Just picked one up. I was wondering if it was possible to use the iPhone to connect to the Internet when no Wi-Fi is available. Many times I can't find a wi-fi hotspot close by, and I really do not wish to go out and by either ATT's edge card or something like the card from Sprint that will let your computer connect over the Edge network (or similar).
iPhone has Edge already so it would be nice if I could use that Edge connectivity to connect out.
Make sense? Has anyone done something similar?
    Thanks!
    /ahuffer/

    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
You cannot use your iPhone to connect a device like a portable computer to the internet because the required Bluetooth DUN—or dial-up networking—profile is not embedded in or installable on the iPhone.
That shortcoming is a substantial part of the reason that I remain with T-Mobile and use an inexpensive Nokia mobile handset to access the internet when a terrestrial or wireless ethernet connection is not available, such as when I am traveling on an Amtrak train.

  • Do I need to use the BT Broadband modem with BT Vi...

Can I use a Netgear wireless router instead of the white BT Home Hub that BT supplied for my Broadband and BT Vision reception or does BT Vision need the specific BT Home Hub?
    Thanks
    Tony

For others who may be thinking the same question in relation to other brands of router, my advice is that you can use any router instead of the Home Hub. I've never taken my HH out of the box, peferring to use my Belkin N router which works perfectly (and the only setting I needed to change was the broadband account information). My advice is that if you have no issues with your existing router prior to signing up to BT vision or BT Broadband, then don't change it. It annoyed me that when I requested BT not to send me the "free" HH as I wouldn't be using it, I was told I couldn't have a discount and also the adviser was vague, inferring that Vision may not work properly without it.
I also don't use the powerline adaptors, as they are quite frankly rubbish. Despite what BT advises, I connect through an Ethernet cable that is over 10 metres long and it works fine. I also use an Ethernet switch that shares the connection with my Freesat TV which I use for BBC Iplayer.

  • Use iPhone as the modem !!! HELP !!!

iPhone can provide your computer the Internet-connection by means of Bluetooth or USB. How it to make or by means of what appendix? Help to understand. In advance thanks.
P.S. I am in Russia and my operator of cellular communication allows to carry out such connection but as it make I I can not to understand!

You cannot. Tethering requires carrier support, and AT&T does not support tethering - that's why that option is not available on your iPhone.
Among the requirements: +"Confirmation from your carrier that Internet tethering is supported and is provisioned with your account."+

  • Using iPhone as Modem via bluetooth within Win XP

can any one help me configurating my PC settings getting iPhone working as Modem via Bluetooth within WinXP ...

Does your XP computer support Bluetooth? Are you using a carrier that supports tethering (AT&T doesn't, for example)? If both of these questions were answered in the affirmative, you should be able to connect your iPhone to your PC either under Settings or in the "Add Bluetooth Device Wizard" on your computer. Also, ensure that tethering is enabled in your Settings app.

There is no solution until AT&T implements internet tethering, that's why you don't have any tethering settings.

  • Using iPhone to connect pda to Edge via Bluetooth

Any guidance on using the iPhone as a modem to connect to Edge for pda / computer ? I had this hooked up with my previous cellphone (Sony K790a) since I already had an edge account. Until Apple comes up with ActiveSync, I would like to continue to use this for Calendar / Exchange email.
For the Sony, I found all the settings easily on the web, but I don't see anything for iPhone . . . am I missing something ?
    Thanks.

This is called tethering, and you'll have to check if your carrier supports this feature.

  • Using the iPhone as a modem

I am a current O2 customer in the UK and I have used various Nokia phones (and IR & bluetooth) to connect an iPaq and various laptops to a mainframe computer (ie. a modem on the end of a standard UK landline phone number).
At times I had to wrestle with O2 customer support to sort out the "modem" capability and it became apparent this ability was a configuration on my O2 account (I swapped between Orange and O2) in addition to the phones ability.
Most of the discussion here seems to be generated by US AT&T customers where it seems AT&T dont allow this sort of customer usage. O2 do.
So the million dollar question is, will we be able to use the iPhone as a modem in the UK to access other computers, with handhelds & laptops?
    Cheers
    Eric

for what it is worth, I asked O2 that question as for me it will be the deciding factor in whether I buy one or not. Their response (the relevant bit) is pasted below and is very non-committal as to whether they are not allowed to say or simply don't know.
+Thank you for emailing us to find out if the iPhone can be used as a modem.+
+I'm unable to tell you if you the iPhone can be used as a modem. For full detail on the iPhone, please visit the manufacturers website by clicking on the link below:+
    +http://www.apple.com/iphone/+
So come on Apple, you have a technically near-perfect product, an eager customer base willing to cough up their money for your product rather than a competitors at a moment's notice and a complete lack of information from or interest on your part in providing the last little function of what your customers need! Even if the connection is only EDGE speed rather than broadband, for those of us who use your laptop products as a necessity on the road, it at least provides a way of connecting our laptops to the net to access functions the iPhone really can't do (such as databases and SOA access) and really wouldn't want it to.
Put everyone out of their misery and open up with the information we need and open up the iPhone to what it really can do.

  • Is there any way to enable rSAP, use the iPhone as a modem, create sms folders, and show the day's calender on the home screen?

    Hi folks
Had iPhone for a while and generally happy, but it seems I still need to keep my old nokia E72 because I cannot seem to use the iPhone as a modem, nor does it support rSAP.
Also, while I like the threaded sms view, I'd also like the option to create sms folders to stash away my banking sms info, all of which comes from different numbers, and filled the sms inbox with hundreds of messages.
Lastly, having the meeting for the day diplayed somewhere on the home screen would be great if there were a way to do it. Yes, I can go into calender easy enough, but unless I develop the habit of checking it all the time, I often forget about a meeting whereas on the old nokia, it was always displayed.
What gives with the lack of flash support? Maybe ol Steve dislikes adobe, but it seems like a serious lack to me. Even the old nokia has some flash support.
Given that, I must say I love the seperate calenders and contacts. It's great to be able to keep home contacts seperate from work ones, but still have them on the same phone. Email is great two - full html support seems like a given but it works really well.

rSAP has largely been supplanted by ABAP, which the iPhone supports. Most modern smartphones, including the iPhone do NOT store any information on the SIM.
SMS inboxes. Not much to say. I've never had a desire to do this. I understand it could be useful, but it's unlikely to change.
As for meetings on the home screen... Wait for iOS 5
Flash: it's not JUST that Steve doesn't like flash. Adobe has failed to produce a workable version of Flash for iOS. Blame has to go to both sides.  I say good riddance to it.

  • Is it possible to use the iPhone as a modem and pick up the internet ?

I wondered if it was possible to use the airport facility on an iMac G5 to pick up the internet from an iPhone placed near by ? THis would effectively make the iPhone a wireless modem ?
I've not got an iPhone yet and this would be really useful.
    Thanks in advance.

The iPhone does not currently support tethering. There was an app that did that, but it was pulled from the App Store after only a few hours of availability, and all such apps have apparently been banned.
