Using iPhone as laptop connect

I'm thinking about getting an iPhone, but would like to be able to use its internet capabilities with my Mac. Can you use the iPhone as a kind of laptop connect card?

When I purchased my iphone, it was to replace my BlackJack. My main reason for the switch was bigger screen and better web access through Safari. The BlackJack had quite a few websites that it could not view.
Anyway, I have found several short comings with the iphone compared to most smartphones or Blackberry. Most of the short comings are in the email, calendar, to-do, and connectivity.
I would gladly pay the $60 price for the data, so I could carry one device and pay for only one device, but I don't see this happening in the near future.
I pay for unlimited data on both devices now, so I would be saving $60 a month. I see that as a plus.
When talking to Apple employees, they sure do mention 3rd party apps a lot. I wonder if Apple is going to rely on someone else coming up with the solution. There was a hack for the tether issue on the 1st gen iphone...

Look on the support pages for your WiFi router for a firmware update for the router.
It's hard to say much more without knowing the make, model, and version of your WiFi router and how you have it configured.

No, it cannot. This is called tethering and is not supported by iphone or AT&T. There was an article on CNet that it may happen sometime in 2009.

Updates are not as thorough as Restore. Restore iPhone with iTunes on computer, Set Up as New when prompted, see if better. If still problem after restore, take iPhone to Apple Store for free quick battery diagnostic testing. Make Genius reservation to avoid long wait time at the store.

Itunes 11.1 is for your computer, not your iphone
It is required in order to sync with ios 7.

HT4235 my iphone 4 wont connect to my laptop (windows 8) via usb but it will however register that it is there via 'photos' im not using the cable that came with my phone, does that affect the connection? i just want it to connect to my itunes again!!!

Please, kindly assist me with following challenges. I use iphone 3GS. I have used the phone for almost a year now. My iphone 3GS cannot connect to the itunes store. Each time I connect my phone to my Laptop through itunes. A message will automatically come up which states that "iTunes could not connect to the iTunes Store. An unknoown error occured (306)". It also make a footnote which states "make sure that your network connection ia active and try again". When I click the button labeled OK just below the messages, another message will come up which reads, "A new iphone software version (5.1) is available for the iphone software. Would you like to download it and update your iphone now?". It gives me the option buttons such as CANCEL or DOWNLOAD AND UPDATE or DOWNLOAD ONLY. If I click on DOWNLOAD AND UPDATE or DOWNLOAD ONLY. The above challenge has continued for more that 3 months now. This challenge has hindered me from installing some applications like Facebook Application for iphone, LinkedIn application for iphone and a lot of other applications. I saw your message. Below are the problems:
Whenever I connect my iphone 3GS to my PC through a USB. My itunes software comes up automatically.
1. After that a message appears from the itunes that states that 'itunes could not connect to the itunes store, an unknown error cccured (306).
2. After the above, an alert message comes up which states that A new iphone software version 5.1 is availlable for my iphone. It then states would you like to download it and update your iphone now? With the options buttons as Cancel or Download and Update or Download Only. Whenever I clicked on Download and Update or Download Only, the next message that comes up is that The iphone Software Update Server Could not be Contacted and suggest make sure your network setting are correct and active or try again later.
The above is the challenges I am facing now.

     I have been working with AOL for about three months now with no end in sight. I purchased a MacBook Pro in late September and attempted to use Mail (later Outlook with the same results) to download my Gmail and AOL email. I confirmed all the settings were correct for both accounts and began downloading email. Once completed, I noticed only my Gmail had downloaded and AOL stated it was unable to connect to any of the servers. I engaged AOL and they've been making me try random ports, deleting profiles, etc. Nothing was worked.
     I am looking here in hopes someone knows something since I'm able to access AOL email via the web, using my iPhone's Mail app, my iPad's mail app, and two of my Windows laptops. Only my MacBook Pro with Retina Display (Mid-2012) has issues. I'm running Mountain Lion 10.8.2 with all updates.
     Tried using telnet but get "connection refused". No firewalls are running. I thought maybe it was the OS itself so I installed Office 2010 on Windows 7 in Fusion and Outlook gives me "an encrypted connection to your mail server is not available". This is a clean install with no firewalls, AV, nothing.
In both Windows on Fusion and my Mountain Lion, Outlook and Mail successfully connect to Gmail's IMAP servers but fail to connect to AOL's POP or IMAP servers.
Any ideas?

Before I see your suggestion, I did it below that worked well:
- SIgn off the Mac App store (if you were signed in with another Apple ID)
- Leave the Mac App store open
- Quit iTunes and iBooks if they are running
- Open Safari, and go to Preferences/Privacy
- Choose to block cookies "Always"
- Click on "details" under "Remove all website data ..."
- Search for apple.com; select the "apple.com" line then click "Remove", then click "Done"
- Quit Safari
- Open Activity Monitor (search for it using Spotlight or find it in the Applications/Utilities folder)
- In Activity Monitor, search for "storeagent". You should find "storeagent" and possibly "ibookstoreagent"
- Select each of them and force quit them (using the X in the toolbar if you are using Mavericks)
- In the Finder, go to the ~/Library/Cookies folder (go to ~/Library using the "Go" menu while pressing Alt then open the Cookies folder)
- Delete   "com.apple.appstore.cookies"   and empty the trash.
- Go to the Mac App Store and sign in. This should work. You can press Esc if asked for your username and password a second time.
- Go to Safari, then Preferences/Privacy
- Choose to block cookies "from third parties and advertisers"
- Go back to the Mac App Store. You should be able to use it "normally".
Some steps might be overkill, but it seems to work for me now.

I have completely disabled my iphone 3gs. It says "Iphone is diabled connect to itunes", but when I connect it to itunes, itunes says "could not connect because it is locked with a passcode you must enter your passcode on the iphone before it can be used.

My iphone 3gs will no longer let me try passcodes and it only says "Iphone is disabled connect to itunes" well, when I connect it to my laptop, itunes says "could not connect to phone because it is locked with a passcode. you must enter your passcode on the iPhone before it can be used with iTunes" Please help!!! I have tried resetting it and all the tricks I know. Nothing works. Thanks

Using iPhone to connect pda to Edge via Bluetooth

Any guidance on using the iPhone as a modem to connect to Edge for pda / computer ? I had this hooked up with my previous cellphone (Sony K790a) since I already had an edge account. Until Apple comes up with ActiveSync, I would like to continue to use this for Calendar / Exchange email.
For the Sony, I found all the settings easily on the web, but I don't see anything for iPhone . . . am I missing something ?

We recently moved into a new place and have found out that we can only get dial-up internet speeds!!! In a new house!!!

You do not use a WEP password but wpa/wpa2 on router and equipment.
All equipment connects to WiFi, but for your iPad.
Even with all other equipment WiFi off, you cannot connect your iPad.
Your iPad connects to other WiFi nets correctly.
All resets etc done on iPad and Router.
Still I am not sure it is your router for sure, frustrating...
I want to test 2 other things:
1. in your iPad, set everything OFF in Settings/Cellular, turn off/then/on your WiFi, and see whether it will still not connect...
2. If that does not do it: disconnect the router as well as the modem from the power, for 15 seconds, then reconnect the modem, let it fully start, then reconnect the routet let it fully start, turn of your WiFi in iPad, then on, and see whether it will connect.

Wireless access from the iPhone is $20 a month. AT&T's unlimited access for laptops is $80 a month, and for other devices (PDAs, Blackberry, etc; the TOS forbids you to use the PDA as a wireless modem for a laptop) is $50 a month. Thus, if the iPhone COULD be used as a modem it would undercut all of the other wireless data services.
Anyway, you wouldn't really want wireless laptop access over EDGE; believe me, I've tried it. If you really need wireless access get a 3G aircard with a separate data plan. It's really worth the price to have DSL speeds over the cellular network.

You might want to consider changing the name of your wireless network on the AirPort Extreme and then test to see if all devices can connect that way.
If you decide to do this, leave any apostrophes, dollar signs, exclamation marks, etc out of the wireless network name. Use only letters and numbers in the wireless network name.
