Using iphone like an ipod

I was thinking of purchasing an iPhone and using it like an iPod. I already have a cellular plan that I do not want to deactivate it just yet. I want to at least try out the iPhone before I make that change.
If I bought a new/used iPhone online that is locked to a carrier with a sim card included, will I be able to use that iPhone without signing up for a data/cellular plan? Also, is there an activation process when I turn on the device for the first time that prevents me from just going to the home screen?

Yes.   But you have to pay full retail price which would be $600-$850.
It does require a SIM card to activate the phone on iTunes, but you do not need to use a sim card with cell service, any SIM card will do.
Choose a phone that is carrier unlocked BUT compatible with your current cell network ( or the network you want )
Warning on purchasing used phones....
the iPhone has an activation lock feature to prevent a phone from being used by a thief.  It cannot be defeated.   Thieves often sell iPhones that are locked to an Apple ID knowing the buyer will not be able to activate it on iTunes.  CYA as they say.
IF you decide to put it on your cell account, you will not have to sign a contract.  the carrier will provide a valid SIM card so you will have cell service.

  • HT3529 I have two older iPhones (3g, 3gs) that I've given to my granddaughters. The phones don't have phone service so they're using them like an iPod touch. Can I set up Message on these phones without a phone number for them or data plan?

I have two older iPhones (3g, 3gs) that I've given to my granddaughters. The phones don't have phone service so they're using them like an iPod touch. Can I set up Messages for them on these phones without a phone number or data plan using only Wi-Fi?

Yes you can. Just make sure you have iMesages on. You will need to go into Settings>Messages and turn it on and log in to their Apple IDs. I was having some activation issues when I first got my iPhone 4S [it was the carrier's fault, not the iPhone's] and I was using iMessages with my Apple ID to text my friends who had iPhones. I of course had to be connected to Wi-Fi for it to work. Hope that helps.
You could also have them download a texting app and they could use that on Wi-Fi. There are many free ones out there. I personally enjoy Text Now. Gives you your own phone number so others can text you too, not just iDevices.

  • I want to buy a new iphone and use it like an ipod, what do I need to do to make it work?

Okay, I know people say I should just buy an iPod instead... but I want better quality. If I buy the iPhone 5s unlocked, what sim card do I need to get to get just to activate the new device, and not pay a monthly fee. I already have a phone and I have wifi... so I just want to use the iPhone with wifi. Some say you should use an old/ deactivated sim card to activate it, but I'm not sure that will work. When I look on ebay to purchase one, they say not for new or fisrt time activations. What should I do???

virgin mobile sells the iphone 5s and because its month to month just dont put the sim card in the phone and it wont ever be activated you can use it like a regular iphod touch, my little brother does this but we bought a ipod 4th generation for 100 dollars took the sim card out and use it as a ipod for him

  • Can I use an old iPhone 4 verizon without a plan and just use it like an iPod?

    Hi,
I received my sisters old iPhone 4 Verizon because she has upgraded. My contract doesn't expire for a while, so can I just use it like you would an iPod? No calling or texting, just as like an iPod touch.
    Thank you.

Somoene please provide an answer that works for a Verizon phone. This is a perplexing issue,
In your case, just start using it as an iPod (essentially a Touch).  You can do everything but make calls or sending SMS/MMS (but I think you can iMessage and FaceTime if on Wi-Fi).

  • IPhone to use only like an iPod (for foreigners without AT&T)

    Hello
    I appreciate a helping from you ...
I am considering asking a friend (on vacation in the USA) to buy an iPod with some speaker system for my baby who is arriving (the first one!). Then I discovered that prices and capacity of the "iPod Touch" and the "iPhone" are similar, then I wonder:
Can I buy an "iPhone" (directly into an apple's store) without any relationship with "AT & T"?
    AND
Technically, iPhone function as iPod (player of music and videos plus digital camera) without telephone service, here in Brazil?
This idea is really crazy? Because I would have a 2Mp camera and a typical 8GB "iPod" together...
    Thank you all.
    Noh.

I think you already have answered your question, but here's my recommendation anyways...
Get the iPod Touch. It requires no activation or service agreement, and comes with twice the storage capacity. It's fully usable now.
Eventually, I'm willing to bet that the iPhone will become available in your part of the world. And there's a reasonably good chance that when it does come to South America, it will probably have been updated with things like more storage, support for faster data rates, a better camera, and who knows what else.
    Hope that helps!

  • Using iPhone as a iPod only?

My current cellphone plan won't expire till the end of this year, but I really would like to get an iPhone..
Do I HAVE TO have an AT&T account to use iPhone? Can't I use iPhone just as an iPod?? I've heard that you can use bluetooth to use the internet on iPhone...
Thanks for any information you may have.

Using any iPhone features requires activation through iTunes which includes an account with the iTunes store and an account with AT&T. Once that is achieved, you can use all the features, and the non-GSM features even without access to the AT&T network.
There is Wi-Fi on the iPhone, but its Bluetooth can't access the Internet.

  • IPhone like an iPod?

I gave my mom my old iPhone 4. She is not going to activate it til next weekend. Can she set up the iPhone-  I guess kinda like an iPod,  but once she activates the cellular part-  will all the stuff she adds to it now, will it stay? Or once she activates the phone will she lose all her settings?

It shouldn't, but you can always backup the iPhone and recover any data on the iPhone after activating it.

  • Want to use iphone 4s as ipod but can't get past activation

My brother sent his iPhone 4s in to have a replacement.  When he got the new one back he never used it and he closed his account with ATT.  He has a work phone that is paid for him now and doesn't need it.  I asked him if he'd send it to me to use.  I wanted to use it as an iPod, but I can't get past the activation.  I'm being told by the phone that I need a sim card to activate it but I don't have a sim and I have phone service already so I don't need to go get it turned on.  It's a perfect little piece of equipment that I'd love to use but I can't.  Can anyone please help me?

USING AN IPHONE AS AN IPOD
Restore your phone as new.  Place a SIM card into the phone and connect it your computer with iTunes open and follow the activation assistant to activate the iphone.  Once the iphone have been activated remove the SIM card and turn on imessage in settings/messages.  Only your Apple ID should appear in the “You can be reached by imessage at” and “Start new conversation from” fields.  Read the following article for help http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3406
