Using iPhone3Gs as a broadband wireless modem

I read somewhere that it was possible to use the iPhone 3Gs as a broadband wireless modem for a notebook/laptop PC. Is this true, and can anyone verify that it works?
I am thinking about getting a 3Gs for myself and giving my 3G to my wife. But in order for that to be cost effective we have to get rid of her verizon phone and my broadband wireless card, both of which are with Verizon.

Tethering is not supported yet.
From AT&T's website:
" in the future, AT&T will offer tethering capability for iPhone 3GS and iPhone 3G."

  • Using your Palm as a wireless Modem. :) (Rogers AT&T)

I have read a couple of times that it was possible to use the my treo us a wireless modem for my laptop..
Since Rogers recently started selling the Iphone, their $30 dataplan is now 6 gigs!! (up from the just 200 mb)..
I REALLY REALLY wanted to see if I could do this.. (surf the internet on my laptop wirelessly).
first I purchased a USB Bluetooth adapter. the Dlink DBT-122..
It took me hours to finally find out the secret on how to use the "dial up networking"..
"pairing" the laptop and my treo 680 worked fine.. the rest I had to guess and find on the internet.
1.) The phone number to dial was   *999***1#
2.) the username was :"wapuser1".. (which I took from my palm in the PREFERENCES::NETWORK)
    a password wasnt needed,

  • How to use time capsule with Verizon wireless modem

What is best setup for TC and Verizon's Ultraline wireless modem.  Thanks!

    Bridge the TC..
I am assuming this is cable internet.. not wireless.
Just leave the Verizon doing what it is doing.. with the TC bridged you just plug it into the modem with ethernet.
To bridge the TC go to dhcp and NAT page for v6 utility.. or Internet tab for v5 utility and pick the connection sharing off bridge mode.

  • Can I use an Airport as a wireless modem, and will it improve a slow internet connection (from the source)

Living on a acerage outside of the city, we have a weak internet signal. It takes days to download a movie from iTunes. Will using the new Airport actually improve our internet, or are we limited to the poor incoming internet connection?
I'm not very skilled in network stuff, so apologies if this question is really stupid.
    Thanks

There is no modem in the Airport router. You cannot use it alone. You must have a modem and the speed will be set by the type of broadband, and factors like distance.
Ring your ISP and ask if there is any way to get a faster connection.
Often 3G/4G wireless will be faster than adsl but will cost many times more.

  • Can I use Time Capsule with Broadband wireless router that also feeds a PC?

I have just bought Time Capsule but am afraid to open it in case it stops the wireless broadband connection to my Mac and a PC in another room. Any advice?

There is no vpn built into the native firmware of N16 so I presume you are going to use third party.
Just plug in the TC and bridge it.. ie go to Internet tab of airport utility and select connection sharing off.
wireless then you will need to figure out.. you can setup roaming on 2.4ghz by using identical wireless name = ssid and security but lock both to different channels.. pick out of 1, 6, 11
In a PC network make sure you use the TC with a new name.. no spaces no special characters.. same with wireless. TC also restrict wireless on 2.4ghz to only 20mhz.. if you have the N16 set to 40mhz you will have to be extra careful with channels.. 40mhz will use up two channels and only one remains.. so your household will have filled the 2.4ghz.
Someone suggested you can turn off 2.4ghz in the TC by not naming it.. When I try that it kicks up an error that it has to be named. So perhaps someone else has a suggestion of how to turn off 2.4ghz.
You can turn off 5ghz by unchecking it. Seems mighty strange that you cannot turn off 2.4ghz but you can turn off 5ghz.

  • Connecting WRT54g to Wireless Modem

I am having a hard time. I have always had me WRT54G hardwired with the internet, but now my new service provider told me that I had to hook up their modem to the phone line an use their wireless modem (Motorola 3347). Now when I initially set it up and hardwired the modem and the router together my internet worked. Now I seperated them and I cannot get the WRT54G to see the modem. It isn't acting like a wireless modem.
    What am I doing wrong?

To get your WRT54G router to work with the wireless modem is to get a Third party firmware , Like the DD-WRT firmware which has a feature that you can use to connect to the wireless modem , I have the same modem & I have used the dd-wrt firmware on two wrt54g routers , ver 3 & ver 8 , they have been working with the modem & I have had no problems yet. the feature of the dd-wrt firmware is a Repeater Bridge & It does work.

  • Using a Blackberry Storm 2 9550 with a Netgear wireless modem MBR624GU

Very recently I got the BlackBerry Storm2 (9550) and I have a Netgear 3G broadband wireless router, model# MBR624GU. I was using a USB720 modem and I would just plug it into the router and it would connect to the internet. I can tether the phone and connect to the internet on my desktop but I can't get it to work with the router. I (naive) thought I would be able to just plug the Storm 2 to my Netgear router and it would just connect - I was very wrong!!!! I have looked through a lot of posts but cannot find my particular problem. My first question is "Does the Blackberry Storm 2 work with the Netgear wireless router, model# MBR624GU? If it does, how do I get it to connect to the internet when I have the phone plugged into it? Thanks for any input!!!!!!!!!

Hmmm... Do I follow your post correctly that you are wanting to run the NetGear wireless router FROM the Storm, in order to broadcast the Wifi for your laptop to recieve the WiFi signal?
The Storm receives the WiFi signal, not the reverse.
    Like this:
DSL/Cable signal with Internet >> Router >> WiFi signal >> BlackBerry Storm.
    Not the reverse.

  • How to set up email, add apps, use web through wireless modem?

    Hi,
Have a new 8310. OS is v4.5.0.37 Platform 2.7.0.55I'm in Australia, currently with Telstra but in the process of changing.
I have not purchased a data plan for the phone. I have a wireless modem for my desktop & wondering if I can use this to connect my phone to the web without purchasing data?
Do I need a data plan to send emails? Can I use my existing online email acct(yahoo), or do I need to set up a special one for the phone? If so, please explain where/how? If not, what other info do I need to configure the existing one? It seems I need a PIN as well as e-addy & password(& assuming it's the yahoo password?)
    TIA

Yes. Basically, to do anything other than use the phone, you need a data plan. Period.

    Yes...see the above reading material.

PIN...hmmm...there are many definitions for that acronym in the BB world. The most usual one is a unique identifier, much like an IP address or phone number, that is assigned at the factory to your BB. It is used to register your BB for various services (yes, via a data plan) so as to identify your BB on the network.
    I hope that helps.

  • Can I use an airport extreme to extend the range of my wireless modem

Can I use an Airport Extreme to extend the range of my wireless modem?
At one end of my house I have a dual band wireless ADSL modem which provides my internet connection and I want to extend (improve) the wireless coverage to the other of the hosue where my Apple TV (2nd gen) is located. I have being trying to extend my wireless network with an Airport Extreme but so far without success. I can get the Airport to join the wireless network, but I suspect that it is only acting as another client and not actually extending the wireless range. There is a setting in the Airport configuration to "extend and existing network", however when I choose this option the Airport no longer connects to my existing wireless network and I am beginning to suspect that this fuction only works with another Apple device (Airport Extreme or Express).
Has anyone been able to extend the range of a third party wireless router / modem with an AirPort Extreme? If so, any advice that you can offer wold be appreciated.
    Regards
    Michael

    Thanks Tesserax,
Your answer has confirmed my suspicions.
Option 1 from your suggested solutions is not a goer because the modem and Airport Extreme are in different parts of the house making it impractical to run a cable between the two devices.
I did try option 2 and bought a Netgear range extender, which according to Netgear it would work with my D-Link modem - not.
However I have managed to work around the problem (sort of) by using the Airport Extreme to create a wireless network between my iMac 27 and my Apple TV. The idea is that the iMac will act as a router between ethernet connected ADSL modem and the wirelessly connected Apple TV.
The good news is that I am now able to play the content from my iTunes library on my Apple TV without interruptions due to a poor wireless connection . Although the connection from the Apple TV to the internet is not working I think this is most likely just a configuration issue and for me it is not really a show stopper.

  • Using 6300 as Wireless Modem

Heya guys, I own a Nokia 6300 with a working GPRS contract with TPG.
I want to somehow use my Nokia 6300 as a wireless modem so that my iPod Touch can use its internet so I can surf the web on a larger and better screen. Using bluetooth perhaps?
Is there any way I can do this?
    Regards,
    Josh

You can use the supplied USB cable to use your phone as a modem to connect your desktop or laptop to internet. There is an app for symbian devices called 'joikuspot' through which you can do wireless tethering. I haven't come across an application like, or itself, for non-symbian devices. So if you want wireless tethering better buy any latest symbian smartphone.

  • Time Capsule used as router attached to Comcast Modem. wireless stops working. All I have to do is unplug the TC and plug it back in and TC cycles up and have green light as well as the Comcast modem operates correctly. TC 4 yrs old. How do I correct?

Time Capsule used as router attached to Comcast Modem. Wireless stops working with no light showing and Link indicator on modem off.
All I have to do is unplug the TC and plug it back in.
TC cycles up and green light appears as well as the Comcast modem operates correctly.
TC 4 yrs old. How do I correct?

I have the latest and greatest Time Capsule and Comcast. Here is the weird thing. If I have one network set up, then occasionally that network will wedge. If I set up a 5GHz and a 2.4GHz network, then one of them (usually the 5GHz) will wedge. I saw this with a previous Time Capsule, Apple said call Comcast. They checked it out and said it was Apple's problem. Apple said maybe you Time Capsule is bad, so I bought a new one. The problem persists.
Tonight it's not complely wedged, but super slow. The 5GHz network is getting 0.45Mb/s while the 2.4GHz network is getting 17Mb/s. Both are coming in from the same Comcast cable modem. Apparently the Time Capsule treats them as separate.
Is it the cable modem or the Time Capsule. I am betting on the Time Capsule, since rebooting it fixes the problem. Resetting the cable modem does not.
Apple is NO HELP at all. They say reset the Time Capsule. Did that fix it? Yes. Problem solved! No, problem not solved. It will happen again in a few hours.

  • HT3546 can you use your wireless modem and a airport to extend wifi or do you need two airports?

    please help

If you require a wireless connection, then you would need a second AirPort to accomplish this. The first AirPort would connect to the existing wireless modem via Ethernet. It would be configured as a bridge and also configured to be extended by the second AirPort. You can use any combination of 802.11n AirPort models for either of the AirPort to configure an extended network. Finally, you will want to disable the wireless radio in your wireless modem to prevent Wi-Fi interference between the two wireless networks.
