Using Iphoto 8 with Aperture 3

I'm hoping that someone can help me with this one... I have sucessfully imported my existing Iphoto events (Iphoto 8) located on an external HD to my aperture library (on my Mac HD) as referenced files. I then created a new event with new photos imported from my camera on Iphoto, but can't seem to get this new event to Aperture as referenced files. I can import the masters from this event into the Aperture library, but don't want to do that for HD space issues. Basically, I'm still hoping I can use Iphoto as my main repository for photos (on my external HD) imported from my camera, view them quickly, then export a new iphoto Event to Aperture as I need to, but keeping the import as referenced files. I was hoping that Aperture would automatically update the library with new Iphoto events, but I can see the downside of this too. Hope this makes some sense and perhaps someone out there can help! SNNS.

There is no way to do what you want. You would need to import the photos from iPhoto as Managed, then use the 'Relocate Masters' command to move those out of there again.
Basically, I'm still hoping I can use Iphoto as my main repository for photos (on my external HD) imported from my camera, view them quickly, then export a new iphoto Event to Aperture as I need to,
Why?
The inverse is actually much easier. Import to Aperture (using Referenced Masters as you want) then share your Previews with iPhoto.
Remember, Aperture is not designed to be used in conjunction with iPhoto. It's a replacement for it and the various tools included are to facilitate moving from iPhoto on to the more powerful app.

Hi, you seem to be right, although I've never used that myself, it made me go off and test it myself.
However, you can use the 'save image to <my-downloads-folder>' feature, and then import the images into Aperture. Which is what I've been doing anyway. It's a two step process for sure, but it'll work.
I'm very much like you, and trying to swap from iPhoto to Aperture. I have to say that I haven't actually run iPhoto since I got Aperture though.

However I believe you can have Aperture installed on two machines however only one may be using it at a time.
On the new iMac launch the Mac App Store - Purchased - look for Aperture and download to your new machine.

Using Places in iPhoto with aperture photos

If we have a picture in aperture with the City and Country Name attribute filleds, this picture in iphoto will not have the info. So, iPhoto no uses the EXIF City and Country Name fields.

I am not familiar with Aperture so I don't know what it can do or if any helper programs/plug ins will do with Aperture.
However there are other Geotagging programs out there. One that is very easy to use in conjunction with Google Earth is Graphics Connverter. With GC, you can open Google Earth, find the location of you want to tag your photo with, then switch over to GC and use the menu item to geotag the selected photos (you can do many photos at once) with the currently displayed Google Earth location. In addition there is a menu command to simply type in coordinates if you do not want to use Google Earth. GC can also tag using GPS data logger files.
GC will write the coordinates to the EXIF data and I have done it myself on both normal JPGs as well as Olympus RAW format. I know when I geotag with GC and then add the photos to iPhoto, iPhoto sees the tags just fine and show their locations. I assume Aperture would do the same.
iPhoto can tag photos as well, but it only writes the data to the database and doesn't actually add the info to the EXIF of the photos themselves until you export the photos out of iPhoto. Do to do it with iPhoto is a multi step process that would require adding them to iPhoto, tagging them, then exporting them back out of iPhoto. I think CG would be an easier solution.

Advice Using iPhoto and Aperture

Greetings - I've been a Mac user for 19 months and now have 3 Macs. I've been using iPhoto and enjoy it (my wife loves it as well). I am toying with picking up Aperture for my RAW photos. Here's my question -- I'll likely keep my photos separate from the iPhoto library. However, I would like to export edited photos from Aperture to place in my iPhoto albums (in iPhoto, I have my photos in folders by year, then within the years, I have albums of events). For example, I may have an album in he 2006 folder called Labor Day Weekend. If I import my RAW photos into Aperture, and decide that I want some of them in the iPhoto 2006 folder in the Labor Day Weekend album, can I export a copy to that album? May be a silly question, but this is a consideration for me.

Since one of Aperture's primary function is to maintain a digital library it is important to have the ability to export files out of it.
Aperture gives you several format choices, NEF, JPEG (of varying quality), etc. You can then import them right into iPhoto as desired. I often do some photo-touching, then import in iPhoto, as I like. You can send retouched or originals. Quite a bit of flexibility

Apple newbie here...I have iPhoto and Aperture on my iMac. I've been loading new pics onto iPhoto and Aperture, but am guessing it's taking a ton of storage space with duplication? Just wondered what more experienced users are doing???

BAckup to CD & DVD, you'd be able to do something similar with either product so I'm not sure that would be much help in deciding.
(And BTW backing up to CD/DVD's may not be your best option given all the changes in technology but thats a different discussion )
So yes you probably have some duplication going on. I'd be leery of deleting anything until you know for certain just what is duplicated and where. Depending on your import settings things may not be as clear as they might seem.
So it would seem you still need to make a decision iPhoto or Aperture. To get you thinking Aperture is clearly the more advanced program from both the standpoints of image management and image adjustment. It also has a hefty learning curve and places more demand on your hardware.
iPhoto has been around a long time and seems to fit the needs of most casual shooters. It has some nicer consumer oriented features as far as themes for slideshows and books and in the image printing end, postcards and letter paper and such. Some of these features would still be accessible to you if you were using Aperture via the media browser.

Transfer photos from camera to iMAC without using iPhoto or Aperture

I have been having all sorts of problems with iPhoto which seems to have collapsed on account of me having too many photos (250GB). I have been recommended to download Aperture which holds a higher capacity of photos, which I have done. I transferred my iPhoto photos to Aperture and Aperture promptly collapsed...! So, I am now sorting out my photos on an external hard drive and will then re-import them into new Aperture libraries for each year I think so that they do not get jammed up.
I am stuck however, as I am now trying to download photos from my camera onto the iMac without using either iPhoto or Aperture and I cant seem to find a way to do it. I have connected the camera and looked in Finder and Preview but cant see the device there to retrieve the photos from it.
Anyone got any tips?
Also if you have tips on what to do if you have too many photos that would be greatly appreciated too.

Well, when I migrated my photos from my MacBook Pro to my IMac in January 2011 some of the last set of photos I had taken did corrupt and I only realised a few months later when I went to make a photo book and got a black picture with an exclamation mark as the originals could not be found.
In my current reorganisation, I have copied the masters file from my macbook pro onto the external hard drive and the masters file from January 2011 onwards from my iMac onto the external drive also and filed all photos. I intend to reimport them from there, thus avoiding the corrupted ones.
The iphoto version is 9.4.3 and the aperture is 3.4.5
I now cannot open either iPhoto or the first library I transferred iPhoto photos to on Aperture. I just get the rainbow ball and it says 'not responding' so I have to force quit the applications. I send crash reports each time to Apple. I have iMac OS X Mountain Lion 10.8.5
Hoping the new library I have built will work. Do you think I can import the whole lot into a new Aperture library rather than break them down into years?

Using Fotomagico with Aperture

Hello,
Does anyone have any experience using the slide show program Fotomagico with Aperture? It has a feature where you can access your iPhoto libraries easily to create slideshows but doesn't seem to have the same access to the Aperture libraries. A
Has anyone discovered any workaround for this or do I just have to export images into a folder and use them that way.

The reason you cannot drag-n-drop right out of Aperture is really quite simple.
It would involve the same steps as you exporting a version.
The photo you see in iPhoto is either the original imported JPG, or a JPG from the imported RAW file, or a modified JPG(if you have made any enhancements/cropping to the image), so dragging and dropping works well there because you are merely copying a file from the filesystem to the application.
IF you could drag-and-drop from Aperture, users would complain that it is too slow, and much slower than silly iPhoto! The reason it would be slow is it would involve a full rendering of a new JPG based on the changes you applied.. this would take just as long as exporting the image the old way.
Ever made a change to an image in iPhoto? When you move to the next it tells you to wait while it regenerates the new stored image. Imagine Aperture doing that! No thanks!
I have used Fotomagico(which IMHO is THE choice for slideshows) with images from Aperture. I make an album either at the project level or the folder(of projects) level and drag in the images I want to use for the slide show. Once I have made those choices I export them all to a folder and point Fotomagico at it. Works great!
I am sure V2 of Aperture will have some sort of slideshow tool built in, but probably not as robust as an external dedicated app like Fotomagico.

Now that I'm retired, I'm just getting back into photography, big difference film vs digital! I'm shooting in RAW and a little concerned that by just using iPhoto for simple/basic editing and organizing I might be missing out on the additional things you could do w/Aperture. Any thoughts and is Adobe Lighthouse5 "editing overkill"?

If you are comitted to RAW and want to upgrade I suggest Aperture - I believe there still is a 30 day trial - not positive, check it out

MACROB2, if you are happy with iPhoto and already have iPhoto Libraries, but want a more versatile editing and library organisation, I'd recommend Aperture. It is well integrated with iPhoto. You can simply open your iPhoto libraries in Aperture and continue. And you can switch back to iPhoto, whenever you want to use iPhoto. Both apps work on the same libraries.
Aperture will simply give you more control over the editing - you can adjust more paramaters; and you have more possibilities to tag your images with custom fields or search for any EXIF and IPTC tag. And if you have a really large photo library you can spread it over several disks, if you are running out of spavce.

I don't want to have a double picture library, it takes enough space from my harddisk already.
My wife and I share the same camera too. We want to see the same pictures when using iPhoto.
Possible solution: Do I have to make a softlink from 1 user account to the photo lib that belongs to the other account ? [in Terminal: ln /Users/.... etc.)

If you want to have the same data, do you need separate accounts? A surprising number of people think that must have separate ccounts and they really don't need to.
Anyway:
For iPhoto 09 (version 8.0.2) and later:
What you mean by 'share'.
If you want the other user to be able to see the pics, but not add to, change or alter your library, then enable Sharing in your iPhoto (Preferences -> Sharing), leave iPhoto running and use Fast User Switching to open the other account. In that account, enable 'Look For Shared Libraries'. Your Library will appear in the other source pane.
Any user can drag a pic from the Shared Library to their own in the iPhoto Window.
Remember iPhoto must be running in both accounts for this to work.
If you want the other user to have the same access to the library as you: to be able to add, edit, organise, keyword etc.
Quit iPhoto in both accounts. Move the Library to the Users / Shared Folder
(You can also use an external HD set to ignore permissions, a Disk Image or even partition your Hard Disk.)
In each account in turn: Double click on the Library to open it. (You may be asked to repair the Library Permissions.) From that point on, this will be the default library location. Both accounts will have full access to the library, in fact, both accounts will 'own' it.
However, there is a catch with this system and it is a significant one. iPhoto is not a multi-user app., it does not have the code to negotiate two users simultaneously writing to the database, and trying will cause db corruption. So only one user at a time, and back up, back up back up.

How do I use iCloud with Aperture?

I want to synchronize the photos I shoot and load on my MacBook in Aperture to my desktop iMac. I've never used iCloud, but the setup instructions says this should work for Aperture users. The instructions say:
"Open iPhoto or Aperture and click the Photo Stream icon in the left column. Then click Turn On Photo Stream."
Well, there is no Photo Stream icon in the left column or anywhere in my Aperture program. What am I missing? Thanks for any help.

Maria, have you enabled Photo Stream in the System Preferences > iCloud tab and in Aperture's Preferences?
Does your Aperture version support iCloud? You need at least Aperture 3.2.3

Using iphoto with iphoto library on external hard drive

My Imac is running snow leopard with ilife '11. I have imported way too many photos into Iphoto which is really slowing it down. I'd like to put all of my photos on an external hard drive and use that as my iphoto library--which should be possible, as I gather from reading various other related posts. Another reason to put it on an external drive is so that I can use my new macbook air to edit/organize while on the go.

Hello. I just transferred my iPhoto library to a Western Digital My Book for Mac external hard drive. Do you know if I needed to format this drive even though it says it's for Mac. I did not format it and there were not any instructions with the drive that said I needed to do it. The transfer seems to have worked ok but my backups from Time Machine onto Time Capsule are inconsistent. I already posed a question regarding this problem but I noticed this message regarding formating the external disk and I wonder if that is causing the problem. Thanks.

Using iPhoto with batch Photoshop Plug In?

I have a noise reduction plugin which I can batch process with PS elements, but using iPhoto, can I do that with the folder of pictures within the iPhoto library (after they've been imported)? Or, is that super dangerous to monkey with the files outside of iPhoto, so I should have done it before I imported them. If I'm applying to all the photos, it's too time consuming to click through everyone and do edit, apply the plug in, save.

Just a suggestion on the workflow. Doing what you suggest will give you the opportunity of rotating any portrait oriented photos you take so that when imported iPhoto doesn't have to create a rotated modified version of it. This happens with photos that come from cameras with the auto rotate feature. Turn it off and rotate them while on the desktop.
As far as uploading to the desktop I prefer using a card reader. It gives you more control and less wear and tear on the cameras ports and battery. *And it's a much faster transfer coming from a card reader.*
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There's now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.
