Using iPhoto in iMovie HD 6

I have a problem which I have seen others post but so far I haven't seen an answer. I am using iMovie HD 6 and iPhoto 6. When I use the media section of iMovie the audio section showns Garage Band and iTunes files but when I select the photos the list is empty and says that I need to start iPhoto. iPhoto has been started and has photos in it's library but they don't show up in iMovie.
Does anybody know how to correct this?
Thanks
iBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

The error message says "Launch iPhoto 2 or later
to
populate this list"
Hmmm. Something is preventing iMovie from "talking"
to iPhoto.
(Everything that follows is grasping at straws, so if
someone knows the solution to that particular error
message, please speak up.)
Can you think of anything that might cause that? Have
you changed the name of the iPhoto app, for example?
Are the photos stored in an unusual place? On a disk
with a strange name, perhaps a name containing
punctuation characters?
Library is called iPhoto Library as originally setup by iPhoto on my iBook hard drive.
You might try activating iPhoto and making a change
to an Album — add a photo or something. Then click on
a different Album. Does anything change in iMovie?
No
Interestingly, iMovie 6 Help says it requires iPhoto
4, not iPhoto 2. (An error message may need updating,
of course.)
Here's what Help says:
"I don't see any photos in the Photos pane.
You must have iPhoto version 4 or later to see photos
in the Photos pane of iMovie HD. You must have also
opened iPhoto at least one time on your computer to
be able to access your iPhoto library from iMovie
HD."
[End of quote.]
I've done all that.
There might be a Library problem in iPhoto. For
information about that, search iPhoto Help for
"Library". One topic says this about switching
between libraries. Switching — or re-choosing the
current library — might help:
"To switch between photo libraries:
Quit iPhoto.
Rename your current iPhoto Library folder in the
Finder or move it to a new location on your hard
disk, and then open iPhoto.
Tip: If you don't want to rename or move your current
iPhoto Library folder, hold down the Option key while
opening iPhoto.
Click Choose Library.
Choose the library you want to display.
Click Open.
The library appears in the Source list. Any photos
you import will be added to this library."
I tried a couple of things here. First I renamed the library so that iPhoto couldn't find it. When I opened iPhoto it asked me to choose the library or create a new one. I chose the renamed library which opened correctly but there was no difference in iMovie.
I renamed the library again and this time I chose to create a new library. After iPhoto opened I imported some photos into the library and then started iMovie. iMovie still didn't see the photos.
I also tried iDVD and the media section there gives me the same error message - Launch iPhoto 2 or later to populate the list.
This machine came with iLife 05 installed and I upgraded to iLife 06. I am wondering if there were settings which did not get properly upgraded or if there are links to the old programs which weren't removed.

  • Can't use iPhoto in iMovie

When I drag a still image from my iPhoto library it shows up in the project library broswer.
It's automatically assigned the standard display time of 4 secs.
But it won't display in the playback area when you play or drag the cursor timeline over it.
The images (and I have tried many) are standad jpegs etc.
When I selct an image it displays correctly in the window above the iPhoto library.
I've also tried dragging jpegs from the desktop as well / That doesn't work either.
I've created a movie with just a couple of still images (no transitions) and that doesn't work.
I tried a video clip / still image / video clip. All that does is play the the first frame of the video as a still, then it actually plays the video and then it plays the last clip of the video as a still as the cursor travels across my actual still image.
I'm completely up to date on all updates for iLife 11
    Any ideas?

    Hi
Please tell: What fixes did You try - that didn't work - so we can omit them.
    A. Corrupted iMovie pref file - very common problem
    - Trash all iMovie pref files (or rather to test this - start a new User Account / Log into this - if iMovie now works OK then the problem most likely is here)
    B. Correpted iMovie movie project - the other project's run's well
    C. iPhoto - Corrupted iPhoto Library
    - THIS TAKES SEVERAL HOUR TO MEND and
    - YOU need lot's of free space on Your Start-Up (Macintosh HD) Hard Disk - else it might crash !
To me it takes about 24 hours - AND I CAN NOT use the Mac during this time (just to prevent it from HANGING and destroying more than can be fixed)
Start iPhoto - BUT KEEP option-key AND cmd-key down during all up-start.
Now You got a list to select from - SELECT ALL
    IF a Lap-top - CONNECT Power-Mains - Battery will not last !
Do something else for lot's of hours.
When its done - Close iPhoto
Open iMovie and see if it now works OK
    Good Luck !
    Yours Bengt W

  • HT2476 Can I still use iPHOTO 6/iMovie 6/Appleworks with Mountain Lion?

My partners and clients require those formats and are unlikely to upgrade to anything that does not run them., which is why we have not moved to Lion.

I don't know about iPhoto 6 - but would assume no.
Appleworks is a PPC app and will neither install nor run. I maintain an external partition with a full bootable clone of Snow Leopard for the occasional use of Appleworks.
As for  iMovie HD 6: not sure if you can install it (if the installer is PPC, then you can't). I am actually running iMovie HD 6.04 which was a .dmg made available for free download by Apple for unhappy iMovie 8 buyers. I use it because I prefer it over later versions (which I have). The caveat: you must install iMovie 8 first, otherwise the .dmg of 6.04 will not install. Since 6.04 is sort of an update, I don't know if the original version 6 would install or not. The only way to know is to hear from someone who has done that or try it yourself.
FWIW, I have used the iMovie HD 6.04 in both Lion and Mountain Lion. It will occasionally quit/crash during launch, but will usually behave itself once launched again.
So, the best way to try it would be to create a bootable clone of your system on an external drive with CarbonCopyCloner or SuperDuper (and, if that includes iMovie 6, then it's already installed), and then purchase/install Mountain Lion either on your internal or external. You can try it and if you don't like it, simply wipe the drive and clone back your system.

  • Unable to view and use iphotos within imovie or idvd

I recently upgraded to iLife '06 and I would like to view and use my iphotos from within imovie. But for some reason I cannot. When I click on the media button, I can bring in any of my iTunes music. But when I click on the photos button, nothing, except for a message to launch iphoto2 or later appears. the Show Photo Settings button is present, but nothing happens when I click. I do keep my photo library on a second hard drive, not the one which stores the applications. I've rebuilt the database several times. any suggestions are appreciated. -ab

I discovered the root of the problem was an " & " used in the file name of my iPhoto library. That is evidently a no-no. After I renemed the library and restarted, all was working fine. -ab

  • Best photo scanner/printers and camcorders for MacBooks using iPhoto and iMovie

I have been trying to scan slides, first to my husband's MacBook (running 10.6.8 - our older laptop) and also to my MacBook (running 10.8.2).  Before upgrading to the newer OSs, I did this successfully a number of years ago.  I have been using my Epson Photo Stylus RX600 with it's slide template, but it scans the slides as they look in the template, not as actual photos.  I've tried searching for solutions and have read the manual carefully, but the screens I should be seeing on my MacBook are not coming up as they used to.  I fear the scanner/printer is just not compatible with the OS systems beyond Tiger.  If you have had similar problems, do you have a solution.  If this really is an incompatibility issue, what photo scanner/printers would you recommend?  I have over 5000 slides to digitalize.  I am also wanting to get a camcorder with the following features:  HD (1080i), 10 X zoom or greater, low light performance, manual exposure and focus controls, an articulating LCD screen, HDMI port, USB, and perhaps a built-in hd but SD memory too -- for under $1000.  Any recommendations?

Epson does have updates for the RX600 to run under OS X 10.7, and possible OS X 10.8. To download, you need to attach the RX600 to your MacBook, turn it on, make sure the system sees it (print a page), then run Software Update.
If that doesn't work, and you need a new all-in-one, I've had good success with Canon products for many years. They have solid operating system drivers, and a good selection of models with individual ink tanks, so I can replace a color that's empty and not throw out a 3-in-1 ink tank when one color is out.
On the camcorder, you might want to ask the question in the iMovie or Final Cut discussions.

  • Anyone having this problem when using iPhoto and iMovie?

I've posted this question in the iMovie forum without much luck. I hope someone here may have some ideas.
I make iMovies that are largely composed of still photos. Recently I'm having trouble with the preview screen in iMovie. When I click on a photo in the media browser it will not show up in the Preview pane but the little scrubber runs across the bottom anyway. If I click "apply" the photo will import into the iMovie timeline and I can then see it in the preview pane...sometimes. Sometimes not. It is the erratic nature of this problem that is driving me buggy (pardon the pun).
Sometimes the picture will do exactly what it supposed to -- pop up in Preview and I can make adjustments. Other times, no. Sometimes it is pictures right next to one another -- one works the other doesn't.
Is anyone else having a problem like this. My thought now is that it may be related to the size of the library since the problem seems to be on large libraries whereas projects that I do with 100 pictures or so (in a seperate project library) don't give me any grief but my large travel libraries do.
    Thanks.

Another possibility might be the color profile bug that was introduced with iPhoto 6.0.5 and, maybe, Quicktime 7.1.3. It's a long shot but if Terence's suggestion doesn't help you can try the following:
1 - download the "Embed sRGB Profile" Automator application from Toad's Cellar.
2 - unzip it and drop the files that are giving you problems onto it.
3 - import those newly embedded files into iPhoto and see if they work.
As I said it's a long shot but worth a try if other attempts fail.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application, iPhoto dB file backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Iphoto import imovie files...

hi, my problem is a bit complex :
i use iphoto and imovie. when i use imovie for editing, i usually import my video files directly from the sidebar "iphoto video". then i do my stuff and everything is fine.
but one day, somehow, in imovie in the same sidebar, the video file from "iphoto video" doesnt update anymore, so i quit all application, and trashes these preferences files (com.apple.iApps + com.apple.iMovieApp), then i reopen iphoto and imovie, but nothing change (one time ago it worked but not this time).
so i decide to rebuild my iphoto library, when it was done, and i reopen imovie, all the files in my sidebar "iphoto video" was back and updated ! i did it !
BUT, in iphoto i got the usually "recovered" event and in that i got video files with timestamp 0:00. i know what are those files. Its used by imovie for edition, when i locate in finder, the file show up in "iMovieSpeedConversion" that correspond to a video edited in imovie that i change the speed or that i made any modification, imovie make a copy and store in the iphoto library. so that i understand.
my problem is that i want to get rid of these file in my iphoto library, but if i just trash it from iphoto, then when i reopen imovie all my project will be corrupt. so i have to keep these files in the iphoto library file (finder), but i do not want to keep it "inside" iphoto (application).
HOW do i do this please
    J

well they are big, a couple of Go, and they "appear" in iphoto by rebuilding the library, no i didnt try to "hide" them with the iphoto "hiding" feature because i dont want to hide them like that cause im using this feature, so i want to leave these files in the library file in finder, but remove it form the library inside iphoto software... more than hide, invisible, transparent like it was before !

  • Took movie w/iPhone, imported into iPhoto, now iMovie not "seeing" the .mov

    Hi,
I took a movie with my iPhone 3GS. During the sync process with my Mac, iPhoto imported the file as a .mov. In iPhoto, when I click on the .mov file, QuickTime opens and plays the movie just fine. In iMovie, however, when I click the little camera icon (to open up iPhoto and search for files), I cannot see the .mov file, even though I know it is there in iPhoto.
I have read a number of posts about this issue, and feel fairly lost at the moment. I'd appreciate any point in the right direction.
    Thanks

    That would be simple....
I am having a similar problem trying to find images I have imported into iPhoto not showing up in iMovie. I have tried the fixes they suggest in the iMovie help file: "iLife: Cannot See iPhoto Files in Other iLife Applications" and they do not help.
However, the images do not show up in iMovie even though the events and photos show up in iPhoto and other events and images... from earlier show up in iMovie. At least until March 22 08. I don't use iPhoto or iMovie very much as I don't have a Digital Camera or Cell Phone. I do have a project now that they would be perfect for and now...
The help file info didn't help... there is another more current thread as well about the photo issue rather than the iPhone movie... but I think it is the same issue to do with iMovie seeing imports made by iPhoto.

  • In OSX 10.8, can I use the same apple id to get updates for iPhoto and iMovie?

Hi, so there are several sites that I work at that have multiple OSX 10.8 devices. I was wondering if there was a way that I can use the same apple ID to update iPhoto or iMovie? Apparently its needed for updates now. Alternatively, is there a way that I can do basic updates with out putting in an apple ID? A few dozen is no problem, but there are more than that which need to be updated. And frankly, its becoming a pain.

You may only do that on machines you own. Other users must have their own Apple IDs and purchase the software for themselves. If these are enterprises, then contact Apple. They have special programs for enterprise purchasing.

  • How to change the Apple ID for iPhotos and iMovies(The first ID used in the mac book)?

I found that every time when I want to update the iphotos and imovies and the native apps in the mac book it is needed to use the first apple id that used for the first time you turn on the mac book.
Since that id is not used now and i want to change it, any body knows how to change it?
And although my current admin id has changed, but still when updating iphotos the very first id is needed...

Correct.  Apps are Tied to the Apple ID that Purchased them...
    From Here   http://support.apple.com/kb/HE37
I have multiple Apple IDs. Is there a way for me to merge them into a single Apple ID?
Apple IDs cannot be merged. You should use your preferred Apple ID from now on, but you can still access your purchased items such as music, movies, or software using your other Apple IDs.

  • Is there a way to get photos into iMovie 11 without using iPhoto?

I use PSE9 to organize my photos and don't want to use iPhoto.  When I click on the little camera in iMovie, it only gives me the option of going to iPhoto.  Thanks for any help.
    Peg

If you can access your photos from a Finder window, You can drag and drop them into an iMovie Project from there. Just make sure they are in a stable place, because if you move them later, iMovie will not know where to find them.

    You cannot.
