Using iphoto photos in other applications

please don't laugh - i am new to mac. all i want to do is send some of my photos thru e-mail (sbcglobal.net) and use them in photoshop or photo works. when i go to applications and pictures i photo and photo booth come up but the i photo is not usable. i have the newest and latest, this is quite confusing.

Hi pazach,
iPhoto's database is not meant to be navigated to by other applications (or by you). This is a safety precaution so that you or another application will not move, change anything in it's database causing damage that would prevent iPhoto from opening the iPhoto Library.
You can easily email photos from within iPhoto. Select the photos or photo and click the "Email" button on the bottom right of your screen. You can also go to Share>email in the menu bar. Doing this within iPhoto makes it easy to find the photo to email because you can see them all in front of you. It is also better because iPhoto gives you sizing options for the photos to send in the email.
You can also set up PS to be the default editor in iPhoto's Preferences. This way when you want to edit a photo in iPhoto, PS will open. In order to have iPhoto reflect the edits you must save the photo not "save as" and the photo must be saved with the same file extension.
I know it can be quite confusing for you.
You can find answers to your questions by opening iPhoto and clicking on Help in the menu bar at the top of your screen.
That said, there is a way to get to the database from other applications or to find a photo to mail. You have to remember that you must not move anything, change any file names, change any folder names, or save any edited files back into the iPhoto Library folder.
Navigate to your iPhoto Library folder whose path is ~/Pictures/iPhoto Library
Control click on the iPhoto Library file and scroll to "show package contents"
In the new window that opens find the "Originals" folder.
Control click on the Originals folder and scroll to "make alias"
Drag the Originals alias folder to your desktop.
When you need to find a photo, navigate to the Originals alias folder on your desktop. Do not change, move , delete, etc. anything in this folder.
If you use PS or Photo works to open any photos in that folder, make sure you "save as" any edits to your desktop. Remember that these edits will not be reflected in iPhoto, so you must import those photos back into iPhoto if you want to use them there. This is why it is really better to work within iPhoto setting up PS as the external editor if you want your edits to be reflected within iPhoto.

  • Using individual photos in other applications

How can I access individual pictures in iPhoto when I want to use them in another application? If I want to open a photo in Photoshop Elements, my only option is to click on and upload the entire iPhoto Library. I don't want to upload the whole library, I just want to be able to drill down into the folders and select one picture like I used to be able to do. Is this possible in iPhoto 08? I was able to do it with the previous version.
Now, if I want to use a photo, I have to export it to a folder on my desktop and access it from there. What gives? (this happens with other applications too, flickr uploader, blogger, etc...)

Set PSE 6 as the external editor for iPhoto - then select the photo in iPhoto and click edit - to return the edited photo to iPhoto save it - to put it somewhere else use save as
Under Leopard there are many more options for accessing your photos but under Tiger using PSE 6 as the external editor or exporting photos is pretty much it - as a note you really never should have been going into your iPhoto library directly - it can corrupt your library
click here for a write up on accessing your photos from other programs - but most of the discussion is based on Leopard.

  • With new Photos app, I can no longer drag and drop photos into other applications as I did in the past with iPhoto.

With the new Photos app, I can no longer drag and drop photos into other applications as I did with iPhoto.  For instance, I have a photo collage app that in the past, I could just drag in the photos I wanted to include.  Now, I can DRAG the photos, but they do not DROP.  So, I have to go through the export process.  It is tedious.  What am I missing?  Where can I turn on the drag and drop feature for Photos?

YOu're not looking in the right palce. That's inside the iPhoto Application.
You need to look inside the iPhoto Library
    As I sid above:
Go to your Pictures Folder and find the iPhoto Library there

  • What does "Easily import photos from other applications" really mean?

What does "Easily import photos from other applications" really mean in the Lightroom 4 features list? I also see it stated as "...from other software" as well. Yes, I understand the LR can import from Elements libraries but can't find any reference to other applications anywhere, not in the online help, not in the user guide, not in any videos on Adobe TV. It would be nice if LR could see into iPhoto or Aperture libraries but that doesn't appear to be the case. Is that assumption correct? What other applications can LR import from?

    Hello bbb34vball,
Since that article didn't help, I would suggest trying the steps in this article next:

  • Using Acrobat fonts in other applications like Word?

I tried to read the EULA for Acrobat XI Standard and got nowhere.  I have a volume license.  My question is, are we allowed to use Acrobat fonts, such as Myriad Pro, in Microsoft Word, for example?  Am I permitted to install this font family in Windows Font library for use in other apps if I have Acrobat XI installed on the same machine?  If I am allowed, great!  If not, how else would I be able to get this font family, especially under volume license?  Thanks!

    Hi John ,
If you have downloaded the specific set of fonts ,you are allowed to use those for various other applications as well .As you are saying you own a volume license you can comfortably use them for other applications.
Let us know if you need further assistance.
    Stay well.

I have a MacBook Pro with mountain Lion, I was wondering if I could use dictation or any other application to have a voice password.

I'm not aware of any application that will allow this.  Most applications won't launch until after you login (which would include any utility that could do this).  I'm not sure how much use there would be for something like this.  For obvious reasons, a spoken password isn't particularly secure.  I would imagine a blind person using a computer would still be able to manually enter a password.  I would make sense for folks with other types of disabilities I suppose... so long as there isn't anyone around whenever they use their password.

  • How do I edit RAW photos in other applications from iPhoto?

My RAW photos turn black when I try to edit them in iPhoto.  How do I point them to another application like Adobe Bridge to edit?  Will I be able to retrieve the edited photos back in iPhoto when finished?

Actually you need to point them to either Adobe Camera RAW, ACR, and or Photoshop. Bridge is only a image File Management program and used to open either ACR or Photoshop to edit images.
But if you have Photoshop, and Bridge, installed I suggest you Stop using iPhoto and start using the REAL Image Editing program you have installed, Photoshop.
All iPhoto will do is confuse you and your images. Also stop letting iPhoto import your images. iPhoto stores images inside it program folder structure and makes it hard to get to any one image you want to copy or move. Start copying your images to a Folder of your choosing and use Bridge to view and then send them to Photoshop and or ACR for editing.
If you want to have a Program import them Photoshop includes Photo Downloader to copy your images from your camera or memory card to a folder of YOUR Choosing.
iPhoto is for the Amateur. Since you have Photoshop and are working with RAW images you are no amateur.

  • I have to export from Iphoto to use my photos in other programs (like Photo

I'm new to MAC or IMAC. Moved my photos so IPhoto could use them and apparently IPhoto eats them. The only way I have access to them is to load them in IPhoto then export them. This seems unreasonable. So I'm hoping I've misunderstood some basic procedure. I use Iphoto to organize not to edit.
    TIA -
    Barb

    Barb
Yes that is unreasonable, however the good news is that it's not necessary:
You can set Photoshop (or any image editor) as an external editor in iPhoto. (Preferences -> General -> Edit Photo: Choose from the Drop Down Menu.) This way, when you double click a pic to edit in iPhoto it will open automatically in Photoshop or your Image Editor, and when you save it it's sent back to iPhoto automatically.
That's the way to have pics you edit in PS (or whatever)
There are three ways (at least) to get files from the iPhoto Window.
    1. *Drag and Drop*: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
    2. *File -> Export*: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
    3. *Show File*: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.
To upload to MySpace or any site that does not have an iPhoto Export Plug-in the recommended way is to Select the Pic in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export and export the pic to the desktop, then upload from there. After the upload you can trash the pic on the desktop. It's only a copy and your original is safe in iPhoto.
This is also true for emailing with Web-based services. If you're using Gmail you can use THIS
If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser. Or, if you want to access the files with iPhoto not running, then create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use THIS
Also, for 10.5 users: If you use the extended Open or Attach dialogue (with Column View) you can scroll to the bottom of the Shortcuts and find the Media browser there. Select any pic you want from there.

  • Can't Access Aperture Photos from Other Applications

I am using the trial version of Aperture. I can't access the photos in Aperture from Photoshop, Word or any other application (except Mail). I can see the icon for Aperture and the words "Aperture 3 Trial Library" but it is grayed out. Is there a setting or what? I have Snow Leopard and Mac OS X 10.6.5.

I guess one thing that bothers me about all my pictures being "bundled" in iPhoto or Aperture is that they don't show up in the Finder.
This is a real non-issue. A Package is simply a folder that looks like a file. Want to look inside? Go to your Pictures Folder and find the iPhoto Library or the Aperture Library there. Right (or Control-) Click on the icon and select 'Show Package Contents'. A finder window will open with the Library exposed.
See? There are all your files, in folders.
Why are they Packaged? Because if you move, rename, or alter them then you will corrupt your Library. So it's a simple protection for the structure of the Library. That's all. No big secret.
But there are other things you need to consider too.
Supposing you want to attach a file to an Email in Aperture. Presumably you want to send the edited file of your photo. So, how do you do that +when there is no edited file+? Aperture doesn't actually edit the file at all it simply records the decisions you have taken and shows them to live when you view the pic. All your edits are "virtual". So, the fact that your original files are stored out the the package will be no help to you at all.
iPhoto is pretty much the same - though the details are different.
So, you have to use the applications when you want to access the files for whatever reason - editing, printing, sharing, whatever. That's the point of these apps. They are your Photo Manager, what AddressBook is to your Contacts, iTunes is to your Music and so on.
Here's a macro I use for when these questions come up on the iPhoto Forum. Most - if not all - of these will also work for Aperture:
You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Command-Click for selecting multiple pics.
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
*_(Note the above illustration is not a Finder Window. It's the dialogue you get when you go File -> Open)_*
You can access the Library from the New Message Window in Mail:
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto or Aperture
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
*If you want to access the files with iPhoto or Aperture not running*:
For users of 10.6 and later:
You can download a free Services component from MacOSXAutomation which will give you access to the iPhoto Library from your Services Menu. Using the Services Preference Pane you can even create a keyboard shortcut for it.
*File -> Export*: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. This produces, producing a copy.

    Hello,
Just when you think that you know everything, it is slammed in your face that you don't. The .Mac member name field in the System Preferences DOES NOT take your whole e-mail address. It only takes your user name or whatever comes BEFORE the "@" symbol. There was absolutely nothing wrong with my MacBook Pro (other than ther brain dead user).

  • All photos in my icloud file on my pc have a padlock icon. How do I unlock the padlock so that I can move the photos to other applications or attachments?

All photos in my icloud file on my pc have a padlock icon.  How do I unlock the photos so that I can upload/download for other applications?  Please help!?

    Create main folder e.g. Folder A, then sub-folders inside A e.g. B, C, D and have your Photos in B, C, D.
In iTunes Sync, click your device on the left Pane, then on right pane select "Photo" tab.
Make sure Sync photo box is checked, then select folder A, then All folders box within the selection.
Click Apply or Sync button at the lower right window.
you will have B,C,D folders under Albums.

  • Use of DSC causes other applications that use SQL: to fail to run.

The use of Labview DSC seems to cause programs that use other vendor's SQL support to lock up and die. My current choice had been to run msconfig to disable loading any labview support upon startup. This allows me to use other applications such as PageManager. However oncde I run Labview I must again reboot to gain access to the other applications.
I thought all SQL and Database drivers were downwards compatible.

    Hi,
maybe you should write your question to the NI LV DSC forum directly. It's
not so crowded and suits well for bug reports. I'd suggest to add this to
