Using iPhoto To Email Photos

I've had all sorts of problems sending photos to people via iPhoto 6. If, for instance, I just drag the photos out of iPhoto and drop them into an email all seems to go well. Captions, for instance, stay under the photos in their proper place, and everyone gets the photos. When, on the other hand, I send photos via the Email Photos option in iPhoto all sorts of problems develop.
For instance, people with AOL email accounts sometimes get the photos and sometimes don't. People with web based email accounts like Yahoo, MyWay, etc. get the photos but each photo arrives as a separate attachment and the captions wind up not even in the neighborhood of the photos they belong to.
As with so many things related to computers I have no idea what iPhoto is doing behind the scenes when I ask it to email photos so it's tough to be able to figure out what is causing various problems. My "guess" is that iPhoto is compressing the jpgs because photos sent via iPhoto "medium size" are much smaller than those dragged into an email and sized medium via the selection box at the lower right corner of the email. But why do folks using web-based email accounts like Yahoo wind up with numerous attachments seperated from their captions.
Thanks!

Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
You’re assembling RTF emails in Mail and you’re wasting your time because the folks on webmail simply do not have the capability to display it. You’re not doing anything wrong, it’s just web mail is pretty basic and doesn’t support rtf.
As for the folks on AOL well that’s going to be down to the settings on their end.
Remember, you really have no control whatever on how an email will display on someone else’s machine. It’s entirely in the hands of their settings and their service.

I get this error message when I try to email photos using iPhoto: Your email did not go through because the server did not reply. How can I get this to work when my internet is connected?

Are you able to email from Mail with those two accounts?  If so:
1 - go to iPhoto's Accounts preference pane and delete both accounts. Now add them back and try again.
2 - a better solution IMO is to set Mail as the email client for iPhoto is iPhoto's General preference pane.  This gives you better access to your contacts, a sent copy of all emails and, if you want a layout similar to iPhoto's, photo layouts located in Mail's stationary.

  • When using iPhoto to buy photo books, is Apple going to take ownership of my photographic material?

    Hi,
I like iPhoto for its features and ease of use; however, I'm unclear on its privacy policy.
When using iPhoto to buy photo books, is Apple going to take ownership of my photographic material?
Can Apple use my pictures to advertise Apple products or services?
I've asked these questions twice to the apple privacy postmaster, but they only reply with a boiler plate of links to get further support or they simply ignore my email. Should I assume the worse?
I like iPhoto, but I'm not going to use it if I don't know that my privacy is satisfactorily safeguarded.
    Thank you for any insight

  • When using Iphoto to import photo from existing folder, what happens if I delete the photo in Iphoto ? Will the original file in the folder be deleted too?

When using Iphoto to import photo from existing folder to iphoto, what happens if:
    1. I delete that photo in iphoto? will the original file in the folder be deleted too ?
    2.  when importing, does the hard disk store 2 versions of the photo, hence occupying additional space in the harddisk?

1 - no  --  iPhoto only manages fiel within the iPhoto library - it does not ever do anything with files outside the library
2 - No idea what you are asking - by default (and strongly recommended) iPhoto copies the original to the iPhoto library and you delete the source file outside the iPhoto library - iPhoto alwasy has at least two versions of every photo and some times three - it always have the original, a thumbnail and once a photo is modified a preview - this is not optional - if it is not what you want then iPhoto is not the correct progrtam to be using for phopto management

  • Can I use iphoto to open photos on an external HD?

Can I use iphoto to open photos on an external HD?

The iPhoto library can be located on an external drive
Moving the iPhoto library is safe and simple - quit iPhoto and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity to the external drive - depress the option key and launch iPhoto using the "select library" option to point to the new location on the external drive - fully test it and then trash the old library on the internal drive (test one more time prior to emptying the trash)
And be sure that the External drive is formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) (iPhoto does not work with drives with other formats) and that it is always available prior to launching iPhoto
And backup soon and often - having your iPhoto library on an external drive is not a backup and if you are using Time Machine you need to check and be sure that TM is backing up your external drive
you also can have a small one on the  internal drive and use iPhoto Library Manager - http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/ -  to move photos between the two libraries

  • Can I use Thunderbird for emailing photos from iPhoto?

Under +Preferences>General>Email photos using+: gives me two options. One Mail and another Entourage. Now I am using Thunderbird for my mailing needs. How can I make iPhoto to use Thunderbird instead of Mail? Thanks!

In the Preferences to Mail there's an option to "Check for New Messages" and if you select "Manually" I think that will do what you want. However, as it's more a Mail query than an iPhoto one I would pop it on the Mail forum for your version of the OS.
Of course there are other ways to get photos to an email client. Does Thunderbird have a Media browser? You can access your Library from one - or make one in Automator which takes a couple of seconds. Or you can access your Library from every Open... or Attach... dialogue in the OS.

  • Iphoto problem emailing photo

I get an error message saying that my username/password combination is incorrect whenever I try to email a picture from iphoto.  Is there a solution for this.  I know without a doubt that the username/password are correct.

What version of iPhoto are you using? Who is your mail service provider? Are you able to send mail from Apple's Mail application?
Alternatives might be to create an email and dragging and dropping photos onto it from iPhoto. You could also share using flickr, FaceBook or Photo Stream.
    Best of luck.

  • How do I use iPhoto to get photos into 3G phone?

    Hi,
I was wondering how best to import images into my iPhone 3G for viewing.
Most of my image files are large high quality 2 -4 MB files.
Is there an easy way to downsize the files for viewing on the iPhone 3G? Does iPhoto have a setting specific for import/export use with the iPhone?
How do I set a specific photo as the phone's wallpaper and does it have to be specifically sized to use as wallpaper?

Photos are synced via itunes. They are optimized automatically for viewing on the iphone.
The users guide will explain how to set up syncing for your iphone.
    http://manuals.info.apple.com/enUS/iPhone_UserGuide.pdf
Select a photo on your iphone, hit the icon in bottom left corner, it will give you the option of setting wallpaper.
Read the guide, it will tell you how to use the iphone.

  • How to use iPhoto with 1 photo library and 2 user accounts on 1 iMac ?

    Title says it all.
I don't want to have a double picture library, it takes enough space from my harddisk already.
My wife and I share the same camera too. We want to see the same pictures when using iPhoto.
Possible solution: Do I have to make a softlink from 1 user account to the photo lib that belongs to the other account ? [in Terminal:  ln /Users/.... etc.)
    (Yes, I'm an ex-Linux user)
    Thnx
    Fred4711

If you want to have the same data, do you need separate accounts? A surprising number of people think that must have separate ccounts and they really don't need to.
    Anyway:
For iPhoto 09 (version 8.0.2) and later:
    What you mean by 'share'.
If you want the other user to be able to see the pics, but not add to, change or alter your library, then enable Sharing in your iPhoto (Preferences -> Sharing), leave iPhoto running and use Fast User Switching to open the other account. In that account, enable 'Look For Shared Libraries'. Your Library will appear in the other source pane.
Any user can drag a pic from the Shared Library to their own in the iPhoto Window.
Remember iPhoto must be running in both accounts for this to work.
If you want the other user to have the same access to the library as you: to be able to add, edit, organise, keyword etc.
Quit iPhoto in both accounts. Move the Library to the Users / Shared Folder
(You can also use an external HD set to ignore permissions, a Disk Image or even partition your Hard Disk.)
In each account in turn: Double click on the Library to open it. (You may be asked to repair the Library Permissions.) From that point on, this will be the default library location. Both accounts will have full access to the library, in fact, both accounts will 'own' it.
However, there is a catch with this system and it is a significant one. iPhoto is not a multi-user app., it does not have the code to negotiate two users simultaneously writing to the database, and trying will cause db corruption. So only one user at a time, and back up, back up back up.

  • Using iPhoto, editing with Photo Elements 10, How to have save photos  directly to iPhoto?

I want to keep using iphoto but use editing capabilities of elements 10. I am having a hardtime saving back to iphoto. Initialy was adding text to photos and had to first "flatten" the layers to be able to save to iphoto. (realized after two hours) Otherwise could'nt. Also corrected blemishes and would not save back to iphoto. It should not be that difficult if it is advertised as "edit directly from iphoto". The saving of the edits back to iPhoto should be straightforward as well, I think. now, common sense is not that common. Can anybody enlighten me? cropping and saving, no issue. THANKS!

Are you saving by using the same format? e.g. if opening a jpeg from iPhoto it must be saved as jpeg.
If using RAW images check settings are correct under the General à Advanced tab.
After Editing in PSE you must save and close in Elements for iPhoto to update correctly. iPhoto makes a virtual copy and it’s possible to right click an image and choose revert to original. Some users prefer to start the process by right clicking an image in iPhoto and choosing duplicate. After editing in PSE, saving and closing; two separate images are visible in iPhoto (the original and the edited version)
Whichever workflow you prefer - see this tech note for further information.

  • I can't get iPhoto to email photos

I keep getting the message that the email server doesn't recognize the user name/password when I try to use iphoto to sent pics.

I'm guessing you're using iPhoto as the email client.  That being said, go into iPhoto's Accounts preference pane, delete the emal account and add it back.
If that doesn't solve the issue a better solution, IMO, is to set Mail as the email client in iPhoto's General preference pane.  Mail is more reliable, gives you a sent copy, provides better access to your contacts and does have layouts similar to iPhoto's themes in its stationary selections.

  • Using iPhoto to manage photo syncing to Apple TV

    Hi,
I don't normally use iPhoto. This is not really because I dislike the program as such; just that I prefer to use a different program to manage my photos (Picasa). However, I've just acquired an Apple TV, and it seems I might need to use iPhoto to to get the best results for syncing photos to the ATV. I tried syncing without using iPhoto, but subfolder structures are not synced from my Mac to the ATV. I'm told that what I need to do is create an album in iPhoto for each subfolder I want to mirror on the ATV. So, I have two questions:
    1. What's the easiest way of replicating my existing folder structure in the finder within iPhoto 08? I have, for example, a folder for a year, and within that subfolders for various periods within the year. I also have a number of specific subject-based subfolders (e.g. a specific holiday or visit). Bear in mind also that I don't want to duplicate the photo files themselves by adding them to an iPhoto library – I want to leave the original files where they are.
    2. Suppose I add a photo to an album within iPhoto, and I then later edit the original photo file using another application. How will this change be handled by iPhoto? Will it be reflected in the album and synced across to ATV next time I sync?
    Thanks in advance,
    Rob

The most simple way to replicate your existing folder structure is to start at the bottom of your hierarchy and drag a folder of images to the Source or left-hand pane in iPhoto.
It will import the pics and create an album from them.
You can create the enclosing folders in iPhoto (File -> new Folder) and drag the album to the folder. You can nest folders inside folders.
So folder 2001, Folder January: Album New Year’s Day... etc.
Note that Smart Albums and the Calendar tool make this form of organisation pretty pointless in iPhoto.
Bear in mind also that I don't want to duplicate the photo files themselves by adding them to an iPhoto library – I want to leave the original files where they are.
Simply go to iPhoto Menu -> Preferences -> Advanced and uncheck 'Copy Files to the iPhoto Library on Import'.
Now iPhoto will not copy the files, but rather simply reference them on your HD. To do this it will create an alias in the Originals Folder that points to your file. It will still create a thumbnail and, if you modify the pics, a Modified version within the iPhoto Library Folder.
However, you need to be aware of a number of potential pitfalls using this system.
    1. Import and deleting pics are more complex procedures
    2. You cannot move or rename the files on your system or iPhoto will lose track of them on systems prior to 10.5 and iPhoto 08. Even with the later versions issues can still arise if you move the referenced files to new volumes or between volumes.
    3. Most importantly, migrating to a new disk or computer can be much more complex.
I generally would not recommend running iPhoto in Referenced Mode, but you’re using Picasa as your primary app.
Will it be reflected in the album and synced across to ATV next time I sync?
As long as you don’t move or rename the file, yes.

  • Why do I have to use iPhoto to add photos to iBook Author?

As a photographer my photos are all in Lightroom and I use Photoshop.  I don't own and don't intend to own Aperture and have long since stopped using iPhoto.  While I love Apple products and own lots of them, I don't want to have to maintain a separate system just to use iBook Author.  I've been wanting some time to play with this for ages and have some ideas for books that I really want to play with but ....  photos and video are an issue for me.  I don't use iMovie either, I use either Final Cut Pro or Premiere.  Please, please tell me there is another way to use media with iBook Author???
    Frustrated ....

    Hey Herbgarden,
Media can be dragged from the Finder or from another application directly into iBooks Author.
You can also add media files (such as images) to a page by dragging them from the Media Browser, the Finder, or another application.
