Using iPod as encrypted disk for G4 Backup

i have created an encrypted disk image on my iPod for backing up my G4 desktop folder. works like a charm. however, OSX limits the size of this disk image to 500MB when it is created using Disk Utility. that is unfortunate since my desktop folder is larger than that. the iPod has 14 Gigs of memory available and i would like the encrypted disk to be larger. is there any way to modify this limitation?
many thanks

i hadn't seen the "custom" item in the menu for selecting a size other than what the computer was suggesting. all better now.....

In disk utility when you select "new image", it should give you the option, size, where you can select from various preset sizes or create your own custom size. Try creating the image you your local drive first then copy it to your ipod.

I was hoping it would be something like a USB device conflict, but now the shuffle is the only thing connected...
This article was one of the ones you linked to above in your initial post
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1369
Under Part 9. Verify that USB drivers are installed, did you try the steps in If only "Unknown Device" appears?  That appears to be your situation.
Also, you said that the shuffle initially worked well enough to do a sync, then it had the same problem again.  If you can get it to work again initially, before doing anything else, try the following.  Select the shuffle in the iTunes sidebar, under DEVICES.  Over to the right, go to the Summary tab.  By default, the checkbox for Enable disk use should be unchecked.  If so, check it and Apply the change.  See if that makes any difference.
(If Enable disk use was already checked, try unchecking it and Apply the change.  Basically, set it the "other way" and see if there is any improvement.)
NOTE:  When disk use is enabled, you have to eject the iPod in iTunes before disconnecting it physically.
If the disk use change makes a difference, that may provide a clue about the actual cause.

My 2011 MBP has begun running slow with frequent 'spinning beach ball' events. I'm running Yosemite and wondered if I should of use the original install disk for a maintenance reinstall. I presume I'd have to download Yosemite again, though I'd be happy just using Snow Leopard again too.
    Thanks for the help.

When you see a beachball cursor or the slowness is especially bad, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.

  • Mountain Lion refuses to install on Hard disk because it is used for Time Backups. I have mounted a different disk for tame backups and still, I cannot install the OSX. What do I do?

I donwloaded the Mountain Lion OSX and it would not install because it said that the hard disk is used for Time Backups. I then mounted a separate Hard Disk and started running the time backups on it.
Still, the Mountain Lion would not install on the main hard disk.
How do I convince it that the haerd disk is no longer used for time backups?

  • HEADS UP!  If your using AE and Air Disk for Backups

    Guys
Quick background, Air Port Extreme, 1 TB WD drive in a Newer Technology Quad interface case. Airport in 5GHz mode wide channel.
I have been diligently testing my Airport Extreme and the 1TB disk connected as an AirDisk for TM backups for over 1 week now. I've hammered this thing making backups time after time, in an effort to move as much data through it as possible.
I thought it was all working fine but, there seems to be a serious issue with this configuration. I can see why Apple's official statement is it's not supported.
*Eventually, you WILL get data corruption, sooner or later you will.*
It seems that the larger your sparse backup becomes the more likely you are to get data corruption. I purposely made my sparse image grow in my testing to see what the results were. The results in fact show that there is indeed data corruption occurring. At first I thought it was related to the distance the machine was from the AE, thinking it was signal strength related, but that turned out not to be the case. I had the machine right next to the AE and still saw the problem.
If you want to test your set up and see if your getting corruption, unplug your AirDisk from the AE and connect it via USB directly to your machine, call up Disk Utility and tell it to repair the disk --- I'm sure your going to be surprised just as I was.
Now here is the thing, once you repair your AirDisk, leave it connected via USB and turn TM back on. It will use it directly attached and use the existing sparse image file for the backup. And you'll never see corruption.
Hopefully, Apple will fined the problem and fix it. I plan to do more testing and see if I can determine what is happening, but thats why Apple as test engineering.

Why not just let TM back up both disks?
As long as the disk with "your work" is formatted with one of the variations of +Mac OS Extended,+ all you have to do is make sure it's not listed in the +Do not back up+ box in TM Preferences > Options. Just be sure it's big enough: see #1 i the Frequently Asked Questions *User Tip* at the top of this forum.
But if you decide to do it separately, then yes, as Chris says, it's much better to partition the backup disk so TM has it's own, exclusive space. See #3 in the FAQ Tip.

  • Encrypted Disk Image and Backup

If one uses Apple’s Disk Utility to create an encrypted disk image, what happens when SuperDuper, Time Machine, or any other backup utility is running while the (unencrypted) image is mounted on the desktop?
Are both the encrypted image and the unencrypted data transferred to the backup device? Or is just the secure encrypted data copied to the destination?
Nothing urgent on this, just curious. Thank you!

I've played around with this a little. As best I can tell, when cloning an entire HD volume both CCC and SuperDuper will always copy an image file (.dmg, .sparsebundle, etc) that resides that on that HD, whether or not that file's disk image is mounted at the time. However the contents of the mounted disk image volume will not be copied separately, and so If the disk image is encrypted, no unencrypted content will get transferred this way. However as mentioned in the SuperDuper link above, it's better to unmount the image in any event, in order to ensure that the underlying .dmg or .sparsebundle file gets copied faithfully.
If you want to copy the contents of a mounted disk image with CCC or SuperDuper, you can do so as a completely separate procedure from copying the HD. If you first mount the image (giving a password if it was encrypted), that mounted image will appear as an independent volume in the "source list" of CCC or SuperDuper, and you can choose that volume as a source for the copy procedure. You would need to designate a different target volume as well, so as not to overwrite your HD clone. If the disk image was encrypted and you deliberately copy its mounted image separately in this fashion, the resulting files on the target will not be encrypted.

  • Using ipod as hard disk

I use my ipod's hard disk to transfer music from my office pc to my home pc. I decided not to delete the iTunes Music Folder from the ipod's hd in case my PC's hd crashed. Is this recommended? I only have 6GB of music downloaded so space is not an issue (for now).
Also, I like to know if using ipod during flights is ok? I know that using cellphones are not allowed but how abt ipod?

  • Using iPod as a disk (and only a disk)

I've got an iPod 4G, connected to Leopard. I want to use this as an ordinary external usb drive. I'm positive I've done this before (used to to beta test Leopard actually).
Anyway, I'm having some trouble doing it again. In Disk Utility I've selected my iPod's drive and tried either partitioning it (to 1 new partition) or erasing it (and thereby reformatting it) and both times I get an "I/O Error". I've tried all three options for partition type (GUID/MBR/etc) but same thing every time.
The iPod is in disk mode (forced), and I've quit iTunes (and iTunesHelper), to make sure it's not interfering.
    Any ideas?

You can't sync or drag your music back directly from an iPod to iTunes, the transfer of music is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there is a manual method of accessing the iPod's hard drive and copying songs but not playlists back to iTunes on Windows posted in this thread: MacMuse - iPod to iTunes
If you prefer something more automated then there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod, this is just a selection. Have a look at the web pages and documentation for these, they are generally quite straightforward.

  • Using ipod as a disk

I just got an iPod classic 160 to replace a broken one. This one seems to work a little differently than the old one (I guess it's newer thinner model). I used to use the old one as a disk to move files from my laptop to my iMac. The iPod is syched to my iMac. When I plug it into my laptop it comes up but then says you can now disconnect before I have a chance to copy the files. With the old one it would come up on the desktop of the laptop and I would double click the iPod icon to open it up, drag the files into the window and it would copy. Then I would eject the iPod from iTunes (where it did not sync) and plug it into the iMac and drag the files onto the desktop of the iMac, and they would copy. Then drag them out of the iPod window and empty the trash and all was fine. What changed or what am I doing wrong?
    Thanks for any help.
Another question. Does using the iPod as a disk shorten the life of the iPod? I'm moving about 16 gigs of data (I leave enough space on the iPod so I can do this).

Does the iPod still appear on your laptops Desktop (or in Computer if it's a PC) as an externally mounted drive?
Does using the iPod as a disk shorten the life of the iPod?
    No.

  • Use iPod as hard disk & listen to music?

Is it possible to use your iPod as a Hard Disk & be able to listen to the music on it?
Like, if you wanna save your music JUST INCASE your computer crashes ALL OF A SUDDEN, but you still want to be able to listen to music and enjoy your iPod & not just have it sitting there as an extra hard drive.
Does anybody know if it is possible to do both?
    And if so, How?
    5th Generation 30GB   Windows XP

    Wrong.
Of course you can use your ipod as a hard disk as well as using it as an iPod to play music. There is nothing wrong with this at all.
There is one downside. The content will take up twice as much space on your iPod.
You'll need to sync your content to the iPod using itunes -AND- copy it manually to another folder using the iPod as a hard disk.
So, the answer really is YES, you can use your iPod as music player, and a hard disk for all of your content as long as your library takes up less than half the total capacity of your iPod hard drive.
Additioanlly, there are ways to copy the content off your iPod even when it's not being used as a hard disk. It requires third-party software, but it's possible. Thats another topic altogether.

  • New disk for TM backups

I am replacing my current 500Gb disk for backups through TM with a 1Tb disk.
Can I just copy the 500Gb disk on the 1Tb disk before I configure TM for using the 1Tb disk so that I don't loose my previous backups and just continue with incremental backups?

you can copy the old backups to the new drive but don't do it using finder. clone the old TM drive to the new one using either Superduper or the restore tab in Disk Utility.

  • Can you use airport extreme 802.11n for files backup

Can you use airport extreme 802.11 for files back up and sharing

You can if you connect a hard drive that has been formatted correctly to the USB port on the AirPort Extreme.
Apple does not officially support Time Machine backups for this type of setup, but you could store regular files this way.

  • Want to use iPod as a disk, but don't want iTunes to start

    Hi,
I am a college student, and I am home for the semester break. I have some files that I am wanting to transfer to my 30GB iPod from our home computer before I go back to school; but when I plug it, in iTunes always starts. My sister has an iTunes library for her Nano on our home computer, and I don't want to mess anything of her's up. Is there any way that I can set iTunes so it doesn't automatically start when I connect my iPod? Any help would be great.
    Thanks,
    Nate

I'm afraid you can't change the setting without connecting the iPod since it's in one of the iPod preference tabs. Your iPod is safe as long as it is set to update manually, if it's not then you can use a key combination on your keyboard to prevent it syncing so that you can change the setting. While connecting the iPod to the computer on Windows with iTunes 7.3 or later installed hold down the Shift + Ctrl keys together. This will stop the iPod from auto-syncing with iTunes and the iPod will appear in the source list. Wait until you are sure the iPod has mounted, and that it will not auto sync and then you can let the keys go. This may take between 20 to 30 seconds depending on your computer: iTunes - Keyboard Shortcuts for Windows
If you want to connect and use an iPod on more than one computer you need to change the update preference in the iPod Summary tab to "Manually manage music and videos" and click Apply. The content of iTunes and the iPod are not syncronised in this mode so the two can be different. You can directly access the content of the iPod and play it through iTunes and you can drag and drop whatever you want to the iPod from either library:
    Using iPod with Multiple computers
    Managing content manually on iPod
    Syncing Music to iPod
Something else to be aware of when using an iPod in manual mode is that the "Do Not Disconnect" message will remain on the display until you physically eject the device: Safely Disconnect IPod

  • Moving iTunes library from PC to Mac using iPod as external disk drive

O.K. I read the tutorial on this website on this topic and found it helpful though I haven't tried it yet. My question is - the tutorial examples assumed I would be using 2 macs. But, I am moving the iTunes library from a PC to a Mac (using the iPod as an external disk drive). Is that possible?

Thanks Erik. O.K....one more question... My PB obviously came w/ iTunes installed, and I have already added to it's library. So, is it possible to move my old iTunes library (on the PC) onto my new PB and keep the all of the songs from the PC's library and the Mac's (basically consolidate both libraries into one)? Or will it replace the Mac's library with the imported library from my PC? Thanks for your help.
