Hi... well this is the situation.. at work i bought a movie on itunes now the thing is my ipod is insync with the computer at home.. now i know that there has to b a way for me to transfer this movie onto my ipod, but i dont want to erase the songs on my ipod and have it sync with the itunes at work. by the way both comps are pc's... thanks!!!!!!!!

do you have your iPod automatically updating the songs and movies on your iPod? If so then you won't be able to put music or videos from more than one computer on your iPod. You'll have to switch it to a manual update. If you don't know how to do that, repost and I'll walk you through it. You can also put home videos and whatever videos you download on your iPod as well (if the transcoding programs allow that sort of reformat). I can let you know how to do this as well.

No, you didn't screw up your iPod. It sounds like you may have to restore it, which will wipe out all data on it so make sure you have it backed up somewhere. Restoring is an easy process and it should fix your problem. The link below tells you how to do that. Good luck.

Using iPod as hard drive.. video of girlfriend accepting proposal will not

We've got an iPod photo, which we've used now for a while to store photos and video files when our 1Gb Compact Flash card in the digital camera gets full.
We've just got back from a holiday, and I've copied all the files (mixture of photos and video files) to the PC, and they all work fine.
However on the day (her 40th Birthday) when I took some photos, then 2 videos where she opened her presents and found a marriage proposal inside.... on the iPod itself it shows the photos, plus the 2 video files as usual.... but when I go to transfer these to the PC, it only copies the photos, not showing these 2 video files at all... even when you go into the iPod's drive through 'my computer'... it doesnt show the 2 video files.
Does anybody have any idea why these might show on the ipod when you go into 'photos... photo import.... roll #5... browse' ...........but NOT when you look at it on the PC?
I could have lost all the photos from the 2 weeks and I wouldnt have minded... but i NEEDED to keep this video.... I have short term memory problems and I'll forget the look on her face and her tears and the 'yes' she blurted out if I dont have this video to watch

Using iPod as hard drive, switching from mac to windows

First off, I'm not sure if this belongs in the right section...
Anyway, my dad had to take my imac to his office and bought a windows for regular use at home because we weren't fully happy with an apple computer. Before deleting the files on the imac, i saved them to my 30gb ipod video. Now, when I try to access these files, it tells me that my ipod is formatted for mac and must be formatted for windows. Will this delete the files on my ipod? If so, how can I get my files/music off without anything being deleted?

Update itunes playlists using ipod after hard drive failure

I had Itunes loaded on a primary drive that failed - the library was stored on a secondary drive. I reinstalled itunes and adding the library back into Itunes, I would now like to recover my playlists from the ipod back into itunes. Right now the only place I have playlists is on the ipod and I am afraid that resyncing may cause the playlists to disappear.

I synced some of my Itunes purchased songs back on by using my Ipod.. however the songs I ripped from my cds are still not reinstalled in my library.. I will have to use my external hard drive or re rip those.. and there are a lot of them.. since I have already replaced some of the ones I purchased back on using my Ipod will it duplicate them if I use the prefrences method and return them all from my external hard drive? If i delete my files that I have already returned on my new computer before using my external will Itunes remember which are Itunes purchased music and which arent as well>??? also how exactly do you move music from an external? just plug it in and click the prefrences box about syncing files and keeping Itunes library organized?? any other thing to click?

An iTunes library consists of both the media and the database that knows which files are in the library and hold details of ratings, playcounts, playlist membership and other details not stored in each file's metadata.
Depending on how you have moved content to your external drive you may find you are only moved the media, but not the database. If you import this media into a new library it will work, but your library will be seen as "new" with respect to any devices that you have and iTunes will want to erase and reload them, losing you current selections, settings and data on the device.
These are two possible approaches that will normally work to move an existing library to a new computer.
Method 1
Backup the library with this User Tip.
Deauthorize the old computer if you no longer want to access protected content on it.
Restore the backup to your new computer using the same tool used to back it up.
Keep your backup up-to-date in future.
Method 2
Connect the two computers to the same network. Share your <User's Music> folder from the old computer and copy the entire iTunes library folder into the <User's Music> folder on the new one. Again, deauthorize the old computer if no longer required.
Both methods should give the new computer a working clone of the library that was on the old one. As far as iTunes is concerned this is still the "home" library for your devices so you shouldn't have any issues with iTunes wanting to erase and reload.
I'd recommend method 1 since it establishes an ongoing backup for your library.
If you have an iOS device that syncs with contact & calendar data on your computer you should migrate this information too. If that isn't possible create a dummy entry of each type in your new profile and iTunes should offer to merge the existing data from the device into the computer, otherwise the danger is that it will wipe the information from the device.
If your media folder has been split out from the main iTunes folder you may need to do some preparatory work to make it easier to move. See make a split library portable. Alternatively you could copy over the iTunes folder and make sure your external drive has the same drive letter on the new system as the old, however moving the library into a portable form will make every subsequent move that much easier.
Should you be in the unfortunate position where you are no longer able to access your original library, or a backup of it, then see Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device for advice on how to set up your devices with a new library with the maximum preservation of data.

Possibly, but will reduce space usable for media playable by iPod. If it will be for use as external hard drive exclusively there shouldn't be an issue. You could get higher capacity discs in external enclosures for about the same size though.

Assuming that your library is presently on your laptop, you have to import the music from the external drive to the laptop. The location of of your iTunes Media folder is identified in iTunes>Preferences>Advanced.

IPod classic hard drive needle sometimes skips (Red X). When it doesn't and seems to power on normally, I start to restore it in Itunes and then it starts to skip again with the Red X on the screen.

There nothing we can suggest to save a bad iPod hardisk, except to try some 3rd Party software to try repair the Hardisk.

My hard drive failed. Fortunately all of my songs were backed up on my iPod. Got a new computer and can't figure out how to get the songs from my iPod back to my computer. Some songs were purchased from iTunes, some from CDs. I tried the import function and all it does is bring the titles into my library but cannot find them when I try to play them on my computer. You may already be using the iPod in manual update mode in which case you can ignore the rest of this post. In manual mode, your iPod is safe from being accidentally erased. However if you are getting a message that your iPod is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, click *No*. Your iPod should appear in the iTunes source list. Change the update setting in Preferences>iPod to "manually manage songs and playlists" Managing Your Songs Manually
You can also use a keyboard command to prevent your iPod auto-syncing with iTunes. While connecting the iPod to the computer on a Mac hold down the Option and Command (⌥ and ⌘) keys, on Windows, hold down Shift + Ctrl. This will stop the iPod from auto-syncing with iTunes and the iPod will appear in the source list. Wait until you are sure the iPod has mounted, and that it will not auto sync and then you can let the keys go. This may take between 3 and 30 seconds depending on your computer. Then go to Preferences>iPod and check the "Manually manage songs and playlists" box.
Keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync again.

Pressing "Erase and Sync" will irretrievably remove all the songs from your iPod. Your iPod should appear in the iTunes source list from where you can change the update setting to manual and use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Also when using a lot of the utilities your iPod needs to be enabled for disc use, changing to manual update will do this by default. If you have any iTMS purchases the transfer of purchased content from the iPod to authorised computers was introduced with iTunes 7. If you prefer something more automated then there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. Whichever of these retrieval methods you choose, keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync. I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up in case you have problems again. External drives are comparatively inexpensive these days and you can get loads of storage for a reasonable outlay.
