Using ipod as storage

Hello all
someone told me that i can use my ipod for storage - as sort of disk-on-key, i.e downloading pictures from my camera to ipod for storage.
is it true? can anybody tell me how it's done?

Yes you can use your iPod as a storage drive.

However, with the newer iPods you can't download photos from your camera directly to an iPod. The iPod camera connector is not compatible with the classic.

Error with iTunes "The iPod Group Storage cannot be used with iTunes...."

I bought a usb hub to accomodate my multiple usb devices. I plugged my iPod into this and got the following error:
"The iPod Group Storage cannot be used with iTunes because it is not formatted properly."
I plugged the iPod into the computer rather than the hub. Same thing
Tried to restore, per the error message's direction. It says it has restored it to factory settings, then it brings up that message again.
I uninstalled and re-installed iTunes. Same thing. It was playing fine but it needs re-charging now and it won't because of the error.
Does anyone have any ideas? I don't know what to do now.

Try to reset your iPod using the recovery mode as described in this support article
However, this will erase the iPod completely. If you have an iTunes-backup on your computer you can restore your iPod settings later from the backup.
I have never tried this in WIndows, however. The procedure might be slightly differeent.

Using Ipod as backup storage for HDD Camcorder

Hi there. I recently bought a sony 30 gb hard disk camcorder (dcrsr50e). I´m going on a 3 month travel so 30gb wont be enough. I was wandering if it is possible to use the ipod as storage on the road (ie without bringing my laptop) like I use the photo converter for my pictures, since I´m backpacking and would prefer not bringing my laptop.
If not, do you know any other ways of backing up a hdd camcorder on the road

Now that your iPod is set for manual music management, does the iPod show up in Windows like an external drive? Do you see it listed either by name or by the generic "removable disk" under My Computer? Because once Windows recognizes it as a removable drive, you can open it and poke around for your files. First you need to expose hidden files using Windows' Tools•Folder Options•View settings. Then you'll see the folders in which the iPod stores all the stuff.

Not without the aid of some 3rd party software such as XPlay2.
Windows cannot read a Mac formatted drive.
Probably the easiest way to use an iPod on both Mac and Windows computers is to format the iPod (using iPod Updater) using the PC. This will force your iPod to use the Windows file system (FAT32) which both the Mac and PC can read from and write to without the help of additional software. Of course then all your software updates for the iPod will have to be done on Windows.
If you do that, you can use the iPod as a storage drive.

I'm not really tech-savvy, but I'm tossing my old computer and getting a new one - is there a way to use my ipod on my new computer without erasing my existing library? It won't let me make changes to my ipod and wants me to erase everything that is on there right now - HELP!

I will preface by saying, I am an idiot, so please phrase your answers like you're talking to a 10 year old. I have a new Mac (my first) and I had iTunes all set up and working correctly until somehow I deleted a folder with half my music in it. It is all on my iPod, however. ?? re using IPOD Classic as backup for photos while away on vacation

I bought an 80GB IPOD Classic primarily as a backup storage device for photos while away for 3 months. I have copied about 4 g of songs onto it (using my main computer and ITUNES) and now plan to use it to back up photos using my Laptop (which doesn't have ITUNES on it).
I realize that I don't want to use the ITUNES Photo Sync as I will be using it on two computers and it will erase and sync the new photo files so I plan to copy and paste the files in using Windows Explorer. I've done a couple of tests and all seems fine - using Explorer I copy Pictures Folders into the IPOD and I can see the files, open them, delete them, etc - and they're the correct size.
My question is this - I can't seem to "see" the photo files on the IPOD itself - when used as a storage device can you not see the photos? Is there another menu I can't find?
Also - I checked off the "Enable Disk Use" and "Full Resolution" in ITUNES - maybe that's not necessary as I'm not using ITUNES for the photos?

You can't "view" anything on your screen that is added to the iPod when using it as a storage device, in the same way that you can't play songs added in that mode either. You can only access those files through Windows Explorer (or Finder on a Mac), you can only view or play anything added through iTunes.

Using ipod and itunes again

just recently i had to deleat every thing from my computer and restore it to how it was brand new, during this process of this my itunes was deleated and i had to re download it and now when i try to put music on my ipod it says i am only alowed to use one computer to get music from. Transfering itunes library from old computer to new using ipod

I'm transfering my library from an old computer to a new one using my 5th gen ipod. but when everything is transfered onto the ipod the storage space only shows "other" space is used, no music or video space. And after its transfered to the new computer, nothing shows in Itunes but i can see some file info if i go into the itunes file in "my computer".

Are using disk mode? Probably yes.
Well, do this:
First disable disk use, unchecking the box "Enable Disk Use". The sync all your library using the "normal" mode.
Connect the iPod to the new computer and message will appear, informing that the iPod is synced with a different computer.

DD's computer crashed last week - now has a new computer. We need to get songs from 20 G color/photo ipod onto new computer. Apple help pages only seem to give you options using your old computer to set ipod to transfer music. > Make sure the iTunes and/or iOS firmware is up-to-date.

Hi I bought a used Ipod Touch (4th). It was wiped clean when I got it except it had the prev. owners apple Id still on it when we went to download an app.so I went in sign it out. then created a new acct with it under my apple Id. I have an Iphone 4 (the ipod is for my Daughter).I can download apps, Music etc. But when I do, I get an email from apple saying a device has downloaded a song etc. that is not recognized with my acct.I also when I plug it in to my laptop it does nothing, does not show up on my device list, no pop up to add it,no DING nothing.I take and plug in my Iphone(using the same cord) and Ding there it is..Anyone know how to add this new one to my act so I can use itunes on my pc. and not get the emails? Also it has been updated to the IOS 4.3.4..Thnxs

take it to apple store and schedule genius bar appointment. your iPod is still under warrenty because that version is not even a year old. They should replace it. Good Luck!
