Using iPod on overseas trip

Just got me the fabulous 20GB iPod (colour screen, think used to be called iPod Photo but now just iPod?) and am taking it on trip to Africa soon. I will be mainly using it as a storage device for digital photos (using Belkin iPod connector to Canon DSLR 350D) but naturally will want a few tunes and Podcasts on it too to enjoy,
So, sorry, am iPod newbie, I have two queries:
1) Is it possible to tell how much of my 20GB I have left as I start to fill 'er up? (I won't have laptop of G5 desktop with me), is there a reading somewhere on the iPod menus?
2) I suspect I will need every shred of storage space by the end of the trip, so ideally I'd like to have tunes and podcasts to listen to in the early days but then delete them to free up space as I go. I can't seem to find a way of deleting files off to iPod without use of my computer - can it be done?
Any advice much appreciated.

1) from the top menu Settings>About will show you free space
2) no
btw there have been a few horror stories on the forum from people on similar trips losing all their photos when the ipod crashed/failed
personally i'd never rely on an ipod to store the only copy of anything i cared about
my advice is use something more reliable than an ipod, yes it probably will be ok, but it will still be far more likely to fail than a number of other options, especially after being carried/bounced around in high temperature and humidity
ultimately it depends how much the pictures will mean to you
if you don't want the weight/expense of other options my advice is try to go to internet cafes etc. and dump your photos from memory card onto cdrom/dvd, make two copies, keep one, mail the other home
or invest in several more memory cards and spread the risk that way, you can always ebay them on your return

  • HT4576 I want to set up appointment times for an overseas trip before I go, and see those local times in the places I visit, but also be able to set new appointments while I am traveling, in the local times.  Can I do this with Time Zone Support?  If not,

I want to set up appointment times for an overseas trip on my iPhone 4S before I go, and have them appear as I put them in (for the local time) when visiting other countries.  I also want to be able to adjust times and set up new appointments when I am overseas for the local time.  Can I do this using the Time Zone Support or any other way?
Basically I want to do what I can do with a piece of paper - write down the time for when I will be there, and have it viewable when I am there, but also be able to put down new times while there.

    Hi.
Regarding your question about reverting back- yes, I think you can. If you make a backup of your current configuration in Server Admin (by dragging the configuration file to your desktop- cool, no?) then you can load that one back in should your configuration not work. If you have the manual from Apple it should describe this process.
Network speed post-op? I don't think you will need to worry. Even using home directories stored on our OS X Server there is no network slowdown (that you can notice or that impacts the wider LAN in any case). It shouldn't slow down access to files, applications (which still come from the local drive anyway) or individual internet connections (even with filtering).
In our experience some of these things have actually got faster- but a lot of that is user perception. Same goes for people who will know you have configured the server and that they are now accessing files through your network from the server, and who really think it is slower. File coming from your local hard drive will always be quicker- but network access isn't that bad that it will make you barf and run in the opposite direction.
Something to look at: connection speed between clients and switching technology in your office. In other words, what kinds of switches are you using, what line speed have you got (100MB/s?) and is the connection from your server to the switch gigabit? Make sure it is.
    Enjoy

  • IPhone 4s no service throughout overseas trip

I went to an overseas trip to China, Changsha. But throught the whole trip my iPhone 4s went on no service. Is there something i should turn on or switch off or anything else because I am a first timer travelling to overseas. My service provider is Singtel.

Did you get International Provisioning activated for your account BEFORE you left on your trip? Did you pick a roaming plan & have such activated BEFORE you left on your trip? Unless your phone is officially unlocked, thus permitting the use of local sims while traveling, you must get your carrier to properly provision your account BEFORE you go on your trip, otherwise you won't get any service.

  • Can I use iPod over 3000 m(altitude) ?

The iPod Tech Spec: Maximum operating altitude: 10,000 feet (3000 m)
If I shoud use my iPod over this level, what will be happend?

well, i brought my ipod on a trip to new york and on the kris world thing(singapore airlines entertainment system), it said that we were flying at about 10000 sumthing meters and i used my ipod. it worked just fine.
PS: i did think about this issue but i decided to test it out. it appears that the statement about the flying height thing is false. i guess "on paper," (more like website), it says that it can't work at these altitudes but in practice, it can.
i have a 5th gen video ipod btw.

  • I lost my ipod. Bought a used one to replace it. When I plug it into the computer, the computer doesn't even seem to realize it's plugged in. How do I put my existing itunes library onto the new (used) ipod?

How do I clear out a used ipod classic and put my existing itunes library on it? I lost my previous ipod and bought a used one to replace it.

Do one or more of the following
    > Restart your computer
    > Uninstall & Reinstall iTunes
    > Reset iDevice (won't erase everything)
    > Go to My Computer (windows xp) or Computer (windows vista & 7) and see if iDevice shows
    > Restore the iDevice completely (will erase everything)
    > Make sure the iTunes and/or iOS firmware is up-to-date.
The ones I cross over is the ones you don't have to do. This should help

  • Is there a way to use ipod with new computer without erasing entire library

I'm not really tech-savvy, but I'm tossing my old computer and getting a new one - is there a way to use my ipod on my new computer without erasing my existing library? It won't let me make changes to my ipod and wants me to erase everything that is on there right now - HELP!

Connect your iPod to your computer. When you get the message that it is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press "Cancel". Pressing "Erase and Sync" will irretrievably remove all the songs from your iPod. When your iPod appears in iTunes enable it for disk use, this is required for most if not all the utilities listed below so they can access the files: Using your iPod as a storage drive
Once you are safely connected there are a few things you can do to restore your iTunes from the iPod. If you have any iTMS purchases the transfer of purchased content from the iPod to authorised computers was introduced with iTunes 7. A paragraph on it has been added to this article: Transfer iTunes Store purchases using iPod
The transfer of non iTMS content such as songs imported from CD is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. You'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos, podcasts and games as well. Have a look at the web pages and documentation, this is just a small selection of what's available, they are generally quite straightforward. You can also read reviews of some of them here: Wired News - Rescue Your Stranded Tunes

    iPod2PC Windows Only
    iGadget Windows Only
    iDump Windows Only
    iRepo Windows Only
    iPodRip Mac & Windows
    YamiPod Mac and Windows Versions
    Music Rescue Mac & Windows
    iPodCopy Mac and Windows Versions
There is also a manual method of accessing the iPod's hard drive and copying songs back to iTunes on Windows or a Mac. The procedure is a bit involved and won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's available at this link: Two-way Street: Moving Music Off the iPod
Whichever of these retrieval methods you choose, keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync. I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up, relying on an iPod as your sole backup is not a good idea and external drives are comparatively inexpensive these days, you can get loads of storage for a reasonable outlay.

  • How do I transfer my current iTunes Library for a 5th gen. Nano to a used iPod touch 2nd gen.?

I was given a used iPod touch 2nd. gen because my old faithful 5th generation nano was tragically washed. But I'm scared to just plug the new one into my computer to see what happens. I want to make sure I don't lose all of the music I have on my nano. Anyone know how to do this?

Not sure what you are atlaking about.
Lose what mui from what ipod.
Your music should be on your computer.  Sync it to your ipod.

  • I'm using ipod touch for a year now. I was using this morning and suddenly the ipod doesn't work at all maybe it got wet from my bag but there wasn't wet stuff in there. and itunes said iTunes has detected an iPod in recovery mode. please help me

I'm using iPod touch for a year now. It was doing fine this morning but in the afternoon suddenly when I took it out of my bag, the screen was just black and it wouldn't turn on and stuff. So I thought it didn't have battery so I charged it didn't work. I plugged to the computer and it said iTunes has detected an iPod in recovery mode. You must restore this iPod before in can be used with iTunes.
Maybe my bag was little wet today but i don't think that is why.. since it wasn't that bed.. just some paper was wet and stuff..
What should I do..? Please help me.

I bought a used ipod touch.  The music on it was not my taste.  I found a delete feature and EVERYTHING is gone.  How do I get the icons back and start over?

If you did not yet connect with iTunes, you can place any music from your library back into your iPod from the computer. When set to automatically manage usic and videos, whatever iTunes finds changed in your music app will be reset to what is on your computer iTunes library.

  • I bought a used iPod touch and when I try to set up my iCloud account, it says that the maximum number of free accounts have been activated on this device. Is there a way around this?

I bought a used iPod touch and when I try to set up my iCloud account, it says that the maximum number of free accounts have been activated on this device. Is there a way around this? I thought I could maybe set up the account on my PC and go from there, but it won't let me do that. It is forcing me to set up on the iPod. Am I doomed to have no iCloud account because I opted for a used device?

Place the iOS device in Recovery Mode and then connect to your computer and restore via iTunes. The iPod will be erased.

If you restore from iCloud backup the apps will be automatically downloaded. If you restore from iTunes backup the apps and music have to be in the iTunes library since synced media like apps and music are not included in the backup of the iOS device that iTunes makes.

  • IPod shuffle 2nd gen not recognized in Mac either Finder or iTunes (but is detected and works perfectly fine on Windows)... i tried using iPod Reset Utility, but no luck...

i've been working on this for the past few days, and still no luck... iPod Shuffle 2nd generation (i know it's old).... not detected in my home MacBook... but works perfectly fine on Windows....
i tried using iPod Reset Utility, soooo many times... and i only had twice the luck of having it formatted... but even though it is formatted, it still isn't recognized in iTunes or even in Finder.... other than the 2 times of having it formatted using iPod Reset Utility, i had seen all the reuslts, like: Error ressetting the ipod blah blah: iPod has been reset, keep plugged in, until reset is completed blah blah: iPod has been reset, unplug and replug your iPod blah blah... etc, i have seen all the possible effects of iPod Reset Utility, but still no luck getting it recognized in iTunes or Finder....
and then , i tried connecting it to a windows computer (but i didn't restore it from there, and just ejected it from windows iTunes), after ejecting it from windows, and then connecting it to Mac, it worked miraculuosly.... perfectly synced and able to put music and listen to them... ejected iPod... after a few minutes, i wanted to add some other music, but when i connected it again, Bam!!!! not working again... even after connecting to windows, it didn't work anymore... guess the magic trick has been doomed...
i badly need help... puhlease...  (^_^)

Hey, I hear ya and can sympathize. I have the same
issue. The difference is that my computer can "see"
    my ipod but it refuses to show up in itunes itself;
therefore, I can't put anything on the ipod (from the
computer) and vice-versa. Apple support is clueless.
This is very frustrating to say the least. Itunes
keeps telling me that my ipod is synced to a
"different" computer, which isn't true. It's the
same computer. The difference is that when I first
got the 'pod and used it with this computer (and
everything worked fine), I was running XP. I
installed Vista and after that, all the problems
started. If I ever get this resolved, believe me,
    I'll post something here.
I'm guessing that somehow, itunes "sees" what
computer it's hooked to by "looking" at something in
the OS. Change the OS and it "thinks" it's seeing a
    "different" computer.
    Try reformatting it.

  • Syncing/Using iPod on both Mac Leopard and Windows Vista.

I can't use my iPod on Vista without restoring the firmware to work with windows, and subsequently losing all the songs on it! Is there anyway round this? Basically this means that I cannot transfer my purchases onto a second computer.
    Not good.

If your iPod is formatted for Mac it won't run natively on a PC because Windows operating systems don't recognize Mac OS-formatted disks (HFS or HFS Plus formats). Mac formatted iPods can only be used on a PC that has a third party helper program such as XPlay or MacDrive installed: How to determine your iPod's disk format
XPlay has the added functionality to let you copy your songs back to iTunes. So you could copy all of your songs to your PC and then restore the iPod to format it for Windows and add the songs back again. A Windows formatted iPod can be used on both platforms though you would have to carry out any firmware updates on a PC to maintain the formatting. If you are interested you can purchase XPlay at this link: XPlay
One last thing, If you want to connect and use an iPod on more than one computer or with more than one library you need to change the update preference in the iPod Summary tab to "Manually manage music and videos" and click Apply. The content of iTunes and the iPod are not syncronised in this mode so the two can be different. You can directly access the content of the iPod and play it through iTunes and you can drag and drop whatever you want to the iPod from either library:
    Using iPod with Multiple computers
Managing content manually on iPod and iPhone
    Syncing Music to iPod
Something else to be aware of when using an iPod in manual mode is that the "Do Not Disconnect" message will remain on the display until you physically eject the device: Safely Disconnect IPod
