Using ipod on the move...

Hi, new poster!
I have a problem, in that Í'm travelling away from home for what may be up to a year. I've brought my (fifth generation video 30gb) iPod with me, with about 5gb free on it. Before I came away I did not enable it for manual use, so am unsure as to whether I can still put new music on to it? All the computers I'm using abroad pretty much have itunes so that isn't a problem, but I don't want to plug in my iPod in case it synchs up and I lose all my music (until I get home that is!). Does anybody know of a way I can enable my iPod for manually topping up with new music without losing what I have? Thanks in advance!!!

If your iPod is set to update automatically you just need to take care when connecting to a different computer and iTunes. You will get a message that your iPod is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press *No* (or "Cancel" if you are using iTunes 7). Pressing "Yes" (or Erase and Sync in iTunes 7) will irretrievably remove all songs from your iPod. Your iPod should appear in the iTunes source list from where you can change the update setting to manual and use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. In iTunes 7 Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button. Don't uncheck Sync Music it will be unchecked by default when you choose the manual setting: Managing content manually on iPod
You can also use a keyboard command to prevent your iPod auto-syncing with iTunes. While connecting the iPod to the computer on a Mac hold down the Option and Command (⌥ and ⌘) keys, (on Windows hold down the Shift + Ctrl keys, or Control-Alt in iTunes 7). This will stop the iPod from auto-syncing with iTunes and the iPod will appear in the source list. Wait until you are sure the iPod has mounted, and that it will not auto sync and then you can let the keys go. This may take between 20 to 30 seconds depending on your computer.

Go to the Store tab in iTunes and click on the Check For Available Downloads.

No, this is not the case. I know where i purchased the movie and I also know movies cant be added to the cloud such as music, TV shows can. The instance happened during the dowload. I think that depending which computer is up and running and the bandwith allocated on either network, which ever computer that finishes first is the one that gets the movie. Just a thought. So next time I will ensure my IMAC is not running. I think that fixes it.

Photoshop CS4 Crashes when using shift and the move tool

Please help!
Everytime I click on a layer with the move tool while holding the shift button (so I can constrain the movement), photoshop crashes. I get a message that says, "Could not use the move tool because of a program error". And then photoshop just shuts down.
Now I can use the move tool without holding shift, but as soon as I hit the shift button and try them together . . . crash!
What is going on?
I'm wondering if it has something to do with an updated video driver that I installed yesterday. It wasn't doing this before that.
Suggestions anyone? Please Please Please Help!

Have you tried rolling back the driver to see if the fault disappears?
You could also try resetting your preferences as described in the FAQ.

You either have to physically delete (or rename) the preference files or, if using the Alt, Ctrl, and Shift method, be sure that you get a confirmation dialog.
This resets all settings in Photoshop to factory defaults.
(A complete uninstall/re-install will not affect the preferences and a corrupt file there may be causing the problem.)

Best way to use iPod in the car?

Is there any consensus on the best way to use your iPod in the car? I have used the Belkin Car Kit with the cassette tape for over a year with my 20GB iPod and I really like it. It keeps my iPod charged and the sound quality is really pretty good I think. Now I have gotten a 30GB video iPod for my wife and want to find out what people feel is the best product for car use before I start buying her any accessories.

I concur with T-squared. The Kensington 33185 is simple to use and the sound quality has been excellent. I bought it just last Friday and it has seen me through numerous holiday roadtrips over the past week. It charges and has three presets; I can recommend 89.7 or 106.5 FM when you're in the Philadelphia/Princeton area. :->

I have since changed to a hardwired dock connector in all my cars. These ALWAYS work.
Just about any car audio shop can install these at a low cost.
They are unaffected by firmware updates, and they charge my iPhone and iPod at the same time. So when I get out of my car I have a fully charged iPhone.
Go hardwired, it will ALWAYS work.

Having difficulty using iPod mini to move music to new computer

I followed the article titled "How to use your iPod to move your music to a new computer" and I am really stuck. I deleted all the music from my iPod (it's all still on iTunes on my old computer" but the music will not transfer to my iPod so that I can transfer it to the new computer. And, the iPod is not being recognized by the new computer.
Additionally, I cannot restore my iPod - there is some sort of error. Not sure what to do from here.

I was given a used iPod, and the battery doesn't work for that long.

I want to take it to the Apple Store and see if they can exchange it or give me a new battery, but the iPod isn't registered under my name. My brother said that I have to give the registered name, but I'm unsure what it is, because who I got it from had gotten it from another person. Is it necissary to change the registered name, and if so how do I do this?

Open Activity monitor and see what's running under All Processes.
Were you playing games when your Macbook is running on batteries?
Did you turn off your bluetooth?
Do you have anything hooked up to your usb ports?
The above comments or questions factor in the way your battery last when using your Macbook under it's own power.

Using iPod without the battery

I just picked up an iPod that I want to use at work. Can I just plug it in using the USB adapter and not use the battery at all? It seems like it would be nice if I never really had to use up the battery.

Using ipod in the car

I am going to buy my husband a new video ipod for Valentine's Day. He says that he has a buddy that can listen to his ipod over his car stereo over an FM transmitter or something like that. Can anyone tell me if that is a built in ability in the fifth generation ipods, or will I have to purchase something additional. Thanks for any help!

Not only can you listen to the iPod, but it will charge at the same time. I use it in a major city with a lot of stations and have had little to no static using this product.

Can't access internet & use iPod at the same time

Is anyone else having this problem since the last update? Also, Skype kills iPod if it is playing songs. I'm not sure if this is a hardware or software problem? It was working fine until the latest iPhone software update.

Launching Skype will pause whatever you are playing. If you press the button on the headset the music will recommence. I am not sure why the Skype app does this. It would be better if it only did it when you try to do a call and not at launch.

Where is all of the code you just showed?
Only a portion of it is a class file's code, and of that class file's code, only a portion of it is valid. The paret where you have the conditional checking the treacher's roon is not incorporated proerly... it needs to be inside some function of the class.

The settings left to consider for Movie to MPEG-4 when using H.264 320 x 240 are:

And the advanced video settings:

After a bit of testing I think that a video rate of 622 kbps is used when selecting the internal Movie to iPod export option.
This results in 750 kbps when audio is 128 kbps.
Short videos in iTunes Music Store use 622 kbps video rate (Michael Jackson Billie Jean and Bad, Pixar For the Birds).
Longer videos used 570 kbps video rate (Michael Jackson Thriller, ABC - Lost).
However my original question was what settings to use to match the Movie to iPod export option.

How do I get my ipod to download the movies I bought off of itunes?

I redeemed "Les Miserables" with the code that was given for a digital copy. It said that it was itunes compatible and my ipod has had videos on it before but now it doesn't seem work anymore and none of my movies or music videos show up. It plays on itunes though and the format of the videos is MPEG-4 and the movie is protected MPEG-4. I tried to look for some of the advice that previous users have recieved but I can't seem to find anything with this updated itunes.

So, you've sync'd your ipod and the movie does not transfer?
If its not transfering try:
1. Click on your device
2. Click on the "Movies" tab
3. If "Sync Movies" is unchecked, check it.
4. If you don't want all of the movies in your library sync'd just uncheck them below.
