Using iPod on Two Windows Based Computers?

I use one Windows XP OS computer at home and another on-the-road. I have iTunes running on the home computer. I want to run iTunes on the other notebook computer so I can sync and put new "files" on my iPod (30Gb Video) when I'm on-the-road.
How can I do this so as not to lose any files on the iPod when changing computers?

If you want to connect and use an iPod on more than one computer you need to change the update preference in the iPod Summary tab to "Manually manage music and videos" and click Apply.

  • Use Time Capsule with Windows-based Computers and PowerLan Devices

    Hi All -
I would like to inquire whether I can:
    1) use a Windows-based conputer to access the internal hard disk of Time Capsule; and
    2) connect the Time Capsule with prower lan devices (e.g. Aztech) to extend the wirless coverage.
    Thank you.
    Gary

Yes.. but.. Long term storage of info is not really wise where you have no backup. TC is not able to back itself up and you will have issues finding anything but manually doing it from windows.
    What windows version?
Have you installed the airport utility? That makes life much easier, as it adds bonjour for windows and a disk access agent.
Simply installing the utility may be enough. If not open windows explorer and type the name or IP directly into the address bar.
Note.. you should use all names on the TC that are short, no spaces and pure alphanumeric.
\\TCname or \\TCIPaddress (where you obviously change to real name (no spaces of course) or IP)
If you still have issues.. check that you can ping the TC.. and make sure firewalls are not blocking it and your PC is located HOME, not WORK or PUBLIC.

  • We just  bought an iMac.  We have a new HP printer that we've been using wirelessly with our windows based computers with no problem.  the iMac can find the printer, but it will not set up.  Any ideas?

Our iMac can find the wireless printer, but it will not set it up.  Any ideas?

I have to disagree with BGreg about downloading the driver from HP.com. I would recommend using Apple's instructions in
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4670?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US
specifically the section on How to Add a Printer then check for the section on Wi-Fi printers.

  • Using apple base station now, but the other 3 windows based computers couldn't find the printer connected to apple base station

When I am trying to add a new printer on my iMac, the search result will show:
    HP Photosmart C6200 series
and there is no problem to add this printer to the iMac.
But when I am trying to add a new printer on my other windows based computers, the search result will show nothing. So I shared the printer on my iMac, and the search result will show:
    HP Photosmart C6200 series @ XXXXX's iMac
and there is no problem to add this shared iMac printer to the windows based computers.
I just don't understand. Can anyone explain this to me?
    Thanks a lot.
    Karen

You and at least one other that I know of locally. All this happened after the latest Airport update.
Interestingly, last week, three of us who use Mac laptops were unceremoniously dumped from our small office network's wireless router (non-Apple). When we tried to reconnect it kept asking for a password - none of the PC users are having this problem - and I HATE that!! Before this we all connected immediately with no problems.
I'm still running my home-based Airport Extreme Base Station and Airport Express on a non-passworded network - the only way we can get online, still.
Hope Apple wakes up and realizes there are a few problems with this release.
    Rachel.

  • Can I use iCloud on two Windows 7 PC's? (same apple ID)

    Hi!
I am a new user of Apple products and would like to use iCloud on two Windows PC's to upload Pictures and be able to see them on iPad. I manage to setup one computer and upload a few pictures for test and it worked, however when I setup computer number 2, nothing happens after I put the pictures on the required location to upload.
Please let me know if this is feasible and if is not, what do I need to do to enable computer number 2 as the one to use and disable using computer 1 (the one working so far)
    Regards

You can only create iCloud account on an iOS device (iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch) running iOS 5 or higher, or on a Mac running OS X Lion (10.7.5) or higher.  After creating your account on one of these devices you will then be able to sign into the account using your iCloud ID on your PC.

  • Profilemanager for windows based computers and android devices

Is there anyway  to set up windows based computers or android devices in profile manager?  I assume not so is there another way to do this?

No ProfileManager is for Apple devices only. If you want to cover Windows or Android instead of or as well as Apple devices then you need to look at an alternative like MobileIron.

  • Use  ipod in two computers,  at home and office?

I would like to listen and download songs using both computers, at home and office. Is it possible? How do I do it?

You should format your ipod for your home computer, or whichever machine you're going to want to dump your music onto when you want a cange of pace. You can set your ipod to manual as described above, and that way you will still be able to get files off your computer at work (mac) but will not be able to update ipod software, or take files off the ipod and put them onto the mac. ipod will not "reject" being plugged into a mac once it's been formatted for windows, it just wont be compatible for updates, and if it's configured from the home computer to recieve ANY automatic updates, you may experience problems. There are a couple good third party programs out there, built mainly for recovering itunes library from ipods when a user changes computers, but I wouldnt reccomend using them to maintain identical itunes libraries at home and at the office. You can find what you are looking for by just searching for the action you want the program to perform.

  • Using two ipods on two Windows accounts for same computer

I am trying to connect and iPod nano but it does not appear in the Devices section of iTunes.  Rather, when I plug in my iPod to my Windows Vista computer, I get an error "The software required for communicating with the iPod is not installed correctly.  Please reinstall iTunes to install the iPod's software.".  It does appear in Windows Explorer.
Yet my daughter has her own (i.e. a second) iPod and iTunes functions properly for her when she accesses it from her windows account.
I have tried unistalling the iTunes software and reinstalling it but I still get the same error in my account.  I have gone through most of the troubleshooting steps in iTunes support but nothing has helped.  Is it not possible to manage two ipods with the same computer from two different accounts or is it something else?
    Any other thoughts?

Apple intentionally made the iPod to work this way to help stem the illegal sharing of copyrighted material which is what you are trying to do.
"i have tried to "transfer purchases from ipod" but this does not work either, even though i have authorised the computer."
Doesn't work that way. It wasn't your iTunes account that purchased the music.

  • I have been using itunes on my windows based pc for years but since installing the latest itunes update I have been getting the error message A required itunes component is not installed. Please reinstall itunes. (-42404)

I have been using itunes on my windows 64 bit laptop for years but since downloading the latest itunes 10.7 update whenever I opened itunes the error message 'A required itunes component is not installed. Please reinstall itunes (-42404)'
Itunes would still load and play music in my library and I could still sync my ipod but when loading a CD itunes would not recognise the album/tracks and I would need to type them manualing after uploading.
I have just bought the new iphone5 and went to sync the phone with itunes. itunes recognises the iphone when plugged in via the usb port or when wi fi is turned on but itunes will not allow the phone to sync.
I spent over an hour the other morning speaking to apple customer support and have ensured I have administer right and that UAC is turned off.
I was taken through msconfigure and adjusted the startup tab but still no joy.
In the end I was e-mailed instructions on how to uninstall and then reinstall itunes and component parts.
Now that I've uninstalled itunes when I try reinstalling I get the following messages during the download.
    The 1st message is;
'The installer has insufficient privileges to modify this file C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Apple\Apple Application  Support\Web kit.resources\inspector\Images\Spinner Inactive Selected.gif.'
    When I click ok the next message that appears sometime later during the install is;
Service 'Apple Mobile Device' (Apple Mobile Device) Failed to start Verify that you have sufficient privileges to start system services.
The options I have are to abort, retry or ignore. If I retry the same message comes back and if I  abort or ignore the download continues and I then get the following message:
'Apple Application Support was not found. Apple Application Support is required to run itunes Helper. Please uninstall itunes, then reinstall itunes again. Error 2'
After attempting to reinstall itunes only some components were installed however itunes would not open.
It would appear many people have experienced problems with this latest download!

'The installer has insufficient privileges to modify this file C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Apple\Apple Application Support\Web kit.resources\inspector\Images\Spinner Inactive Selected.gif.'
That one's consistent with disk/file damage. The first thing I'd try with that is running a disk check (chkdsk) over your C drive.
XP instructions in the following document: How to perform disk error checking in Windows XP
Vista instructions in the following document: Check your hard disk for errors
Windows 7 instructions in the following document: How to use CHKDSK (Check Disk)
Select both Automatically fix file system errors and Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors, or use chkdsk /r (depending on which way you decide to go about doing this). You'll almost certainly have to schedule the chkdsk to run on startup. The scan should take quite a while ... if it quits after a few minutes or seconds, something's interfering with the scan.
Does the chkdsk find/repair any damage? If so, can you get an install to go through properly afterwards?

  • Using iPod both in Windows and Mac at the same Time?

I was wondering if it was possible to use my brand new ipod both in Mac as in Windows without having to format or restore it every time?
The idea is to use "manually manage songs" on both Operating Systems.
    Thanks for your help!

iPods come formatted Windows and will work on Macs and Windows. Unless you Restore it in a Mac, it will stay formatted Windows.
If it doesn't work, put the iPod on Disk Mode and iTunes should recognize in both systems.
If it is formatted Mac, it will not be useable on Windows, even in Disk Mode.

  • Using UIScrollView in a window-based app - IS IT POSSIBLE?

sorry for noob question but i am very new and only 12 years old so i am very new. I am making an app that involves scrollviews but i want to use window based app so i can use the window setHidden piece of code instead of messing around with view controllers.
    My Question:
How can I implement a scroll view into the app delegate .m since there is obviously no ViewDidLoad feature. Do I just make the IBOutlet in the .H file but what to do in the .M file to get the "scrollview ScrollEnable:YES" and the CGSize parameters in without causing a massive error?

Hi Tom, and welcome to the Dev Forums!

This forum is for developers of all levels, including future developers and has-beens. Beginners are especially welcome.

I don't know why you'd want to hide your main window, but in any case, a view controller wouldn't prevent you from doing that. View controllers do all kinds of good things behind the scenes and catch lots of useful messages, which is why they're almost always recommended for any full-screen view--even in the simplest possible project (see [Overview|http://developer.apple.com/library/ios/#documentation/UIKit/Reference /UIViewControllerClass/Reference/Reference.html%23//appleref/occ/cl/UIViewController] in the UIViewController Class Reference). That said, making iOS apps without any view controllers will be an excellent way for you to learn what they do for you, so onward and upward!
How can I implement a scroll view into the app delegate .m ... Do I just make the IBOutlet in the .H file but what to do in the .M file to get the "scrollview ScrollEnable:YES" and the CGSize parameters ...?
Yes, assuming a UIScrollView object has been added to MainWindow.xib, make an IBOutlet ivar and @property for your scroll view in the @interface (MyAppDelegate.h) of your app delegate, and connect that outlet to the scroll view in IB. Then add the scroll view to the window and set its properties in the [applicationDidFinishLaunching:|http://developer.apple.com/library/ios/#documen tation/UIKit/Reference/UIApplicationDelegateProtocol/Reference/Reference.html%23//appleref/doc/uid/TP40006786] method of the @implementation (MyAppDelegate.m). Don't forget to set the [contentSize|http://developer.apple.com/library/ios/#documentation/UIKit/Refere nce/UIScrollViewClass/Reference/UIScrollView.html%23//appleref/doc/uid/TP40006922] property of the scroll view to the size of the view it will scroll. The view won't scroll unless contentSize is higher and/or wider than the scroll view frame.
... there is obviously no ViewDidLoad feature. ...
There's no reason your app delegate class needs to be a direct subclass of NSObject. It can just as easily be a subclass of UIViewController. In that case you could override viewDidLoad, or any of the other useful view controller methods in the app delegate @implementation. Just change the superclass from NSObject to UIViewController in the first line of the @interface, and connect the 'view' outlet of the app delegate to the scroll view object in IB.

  • Using iPod on two computers: one with Windows and one on a Mac

I have a video iPod that I have used with iTunes on a Dell PC, but I recently bought a MacBook and want to still use this iPod on the new computer. I have the iPod set to "manually update music and videos," so it won't erase all my music. Is it possible to use the iPod on the new computer, or is there anything I can do? I haven't tried anything yet because I don't want to plug in the iPod and then have my music erased. Thanks for the help.

As long as the ipod has been formatted on the windows computer and it is in manually manage, you are fine. If you ever need to update or restore the ipod do it on the windows computer. Mac can read a windows ipod, windows cannot read a mac ipod. You will also need to authorize the mac if you want to play any purchased content.

  • My office uses windows based computers setup with a server setup. Can an apple server emulate or find compatibility with an apple server or apple computer linked to the server and allow full file sharing and printer sharing with pc's?

I have 11 computers all pc's linked to an old windows server and all used primarily for microsoft office and printer sharing as well as for internet browsing. Can an apple joining the setup cause compatability issues?

    HI,
grey-haired IT guy here, old enough to come from the counter culture. I ran (COO, including IT & compliance) a third billion dollar financial institution all on Macs 15 to 20 years ago.  All the "experts" had a long list of reasons it would be impossible, and it drove the examiners nuts, but it's only gotten better.
So your benefits are going to be mostly in ease of administration after the learning curve, less aggravating glitches, better overall reliability, and arguably better security.  And reductions in cost and improvement in time to implement changes.
In my current environment of mostly dozens of PCs, the moment I let the OS X Server be the domain master controller, the Windows network browser settled down and instantly showed network neighborhoods like it should have.  (We may have some forgotten pre-NT machines plugged in somewhere -- this is NOT a financial institution).
Couple anecdotes might explain the feeling of coming in out of the cold:  Putting a test copy of a web site from the cloud onto the Mac server, XAMPP or MAMP is pretty much already there. The site has a couple WordPress blogs, and they need .htaccess files, and Apache needs an option set to permit remapping URLs. After much searching far and wide to find why it didn't seem to be working, I found the checkbox right there on Apple's management screens.  Much easier than editing .conf from command line.  Linux web admins hate it.
Tale # 2:  We aren't fully Windows domain controlled -- just using the old network browser.  Need to upgrade that, and I Googled quite a while trying to understand what needed to be done to use Apple's Open Directory instead of setting up an Active Directory on Windows -- both SLDAP3.  Turns out one reason I couldn't find much is there isn't much to say:  it just works.  Just join the domain from a Windows machine.
One more and I'll be quiet a bit.  We use the Wiki collaboration which is nice enough as far as it goes (no spreadsheets, fatal flaw) and it occupies the server's native web site slot.  So the test copy needed to be another site.  Easy enough -- site setup is all GUI and works fine, but WordPress could not handle a multiuser blog coming to a non-standard port (other than 80) so I needed a second IP multihomed on the server.  How do you do this?  Go to Network in the System Prefs, click on the Ethernet interface and select "duplicate".  Set your IP address.  Done.
In summary a Mac OS X Server is a better server for a Windows shop than Windows Server 200x.
My bottom line for choosing Apple:  lower blood pressure.  I SHOULD be money.  After all is said and done, it's about money.  The incredibly more pleasant experience is a free benefit.  You'll pay more for better hardware, but way less in time and trouble.  And you won't be hounded on a daily basis to update the system.  Not that Adobe or Firefox are any better about it on a Mac, but the Apple approach to updates stays in the background.
Think different.  Simplify.  Focus.  Enjoy your work.

  • Want to use iPod on both Windows and Mac What is going on?

I had a iPod mini and we have a 1st gen Nano and 2 2nd gen Nano's and all worked fine when I formatted them on the Windows PC and then plugged into the Mac. My mini died so I now have a 4th gen Nano. Works fine on the Windows PC. When I plug it into the Mac, it started up iTunes fine like it should. Tried to copy one song and it ejected the iPod. It will not recognize it in iTunes or even on the desktop. The Nano charges being plugged in, but it is like it is plugged into the standard wall charger. I would like to get it working with both machines like all the others that I have. It did update to the latest 1.0.3 PC firmware.

    Hello
reading this Apple support doc. on ipod use with multiple computers should help clear things up.
