Using iPod tp transfer files to MBP

I put everything I want to transfer to my new MBP onto my video iPod. (music, videos and photos) I want to upload eveything on it to the MBP and then erase and re-format my iPod to Mac from Windows.
How is this most easily accomplished?
<-----------------very inept computer user.

Well, first you have to enable your ipod for disk use, by checking the box manually manage songs....
I think you already did that since you alredy tranferred your files to your ipod
next you just have to connect your ipod to your mac , wait for it to recognize the ipod, and copy all of your files to your mac.
As easy as that
to re format your ipod i think you have to run the latest ipod updater on your mac with the ipod connected, i really dont know.
But i did the same thing as you to tranfer my files and i did'n need to reformat my ipod, it works perfectly fine with my mac.
hope this helped

  • Using iPod to transfer photos

I'm using iPod to transfer photos from one Mac to another. They were uploaded from iPhoto 4.03 following directions, and downloaded to the second computer with iPhoto '08 (7.1.5) using iPod as an external drive. However only 23 photos out of hundreds downloaded. I get the message, "The following files could not be imported (they may be an unrecognized file type or the files may not contain valid data)." These files are listed:
    /Volumes/name/Photos/Thumbs
    /Volumes/name/Photos/Photo Database
I'm assuming it's the database file that's the problem, but why would some photos download and not the rest? Opening the Photos folder in the iPod icon, there are only two items. The Photo Database is shown as a Unix file. There are only six thumbs in that folder, and they are all Unix as well.
I posted this in iPod discussion, but hoped an iPhoto expert might also help me.
    Any suggestions? Thanks!

What's the HD feature? I don't have the iPod synced to iPhoto in the second computer; I have it on Manually manage music and videos.
There's a possibility that it did sync in the first computer before I checked that option, but no photos uploaded until I did it manually, so it doesn't seem so. Also, the icon appeared on the desktop and that doesn't happen if it's synced, does it?
It definitely did not sync in the second one as it was already checked when I connected it.
And I keep going back to, why did some photos import and not the rest?
    Thanks for sticking with me.

  • Computer crash - how to use ipod to transfer songs to new computer?

DD's computer crashed last week - now has a new computer. We need to get songs from 20 G color/photo ipod onto new computer. Apple help pages only seem to give you options using your old computer to set ipod to transfer music. Can anyone direct us to information on getting ipod linked to new computer and transfering music over?

Connect your iPod to your computer. If it is set to update automatically you'll get a message that it is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press "Cancel". Pressing "Erase and Sync" will irretrievably remove all the songs from your iPod. Your iPod should appear in the iTunes source list from where you can change the update setting to manual and use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Also when using a lot of the utilities your iPod needs to be enabled for disc use, changing to manual update will do this by default. Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button: Managing content manually on iPod
Once you are safely connected there are a few things you can do to restore your iTunes from the iPod. If you have any iTMS purchases the transfer of purchased content from the iPod to authorised computers was introduced with iTunes 7. A paragraph on it has been added to this article: Transfer iTunes Store purchases using iPod
The transfer of non iTMS content such as songs imported from CD is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there is a manual method of accessing the iPod's hard drive and copying songs back to iTunes on Windows. The procedure is a bit involved and was written long before iTunes 7 so it requires a little adaptation, also it won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's posted in this thread: MacMuse - iPod to iTunes
If you prefer something more automated then there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. This is just a selection, you'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos and games as well. Have a look at the web pages and documentation, they are generally quite straightforward. You can also read reviews of some of them here: Wired News - Rescue Your Stranded Tunes

    iGadget Windows Only
iPod Access Mac and Windows Versions
    PodUtil Mac and Windows Versions
    iPodCopy Mac and Windows Versions
    TuneJack Windows Only
    CopyPod Windows Only
Whichever of these retrieval methods you choose, keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync. I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up in case you have problems again. External drives are comparatively inexpensive these days and you can get loads of storage for a reasonable outlay.

Good luck and you are welcome.
Like I said, I bought one of their inexpensive enclosures and now can use the hard drive just as a source for the files that are on it...my external drives are much larger and faster so I just plug that drive in when I need something from it.

  • Using iPod to transfer music to separate PC

I want to use my ipod to transfer music from my hardrive onto my daughters PC (which has no internet access). Sounds simple but I can not seem to do. Any ideas?
      Windows XP Pro

    (1) Plug in the iPod on your computer (USB cable), it should auto detect - look on "My Computer" for a drive with the name of your ipod. (2) Double Click on the drive to open. (3) Create a new folder using Windows (File New Folder). (4) Copy your files from your PC to that folder. (5) Remove the iPod from the source computer.
(6)Plug the iPod in to the other computer. It should auto detect. (7) Open the folder you created. (8) Select all the files (Ctrl A) and copy them (right click) to the desired destination on the 2nd computer.
Hope this helps. It standard windows for copy and paste files.

  • Problem using iPod to backup files

Sorry to double post, but I just realized that I'd somehow managed to post this on the Mac forum.
Using WinXP Pro SP2, I connected my 60G iPod and checked Enable disk use. I then tried several times to transfer files to the iPod, but kept getting the following message:
"The disk in the destination drive is full. Insert a new disk to continue."
Checking the properties for the drive shows plenty of available space.
Any ideas as to what I'm doing wrong?
Also is it possible to use other than the FATS format on an iPod?

How many things do you have connected to usb?
Do you have alot of drive letters in "My Computer"
Windows may be confusing the iPod with a network drive, try changing the drive letter

  • Using WEBUTIL to transfer files to server

We need to transfer files from Forms client to database server filesystem.
It seems, WEBUTIL_FILE_TRANSFER doesn’t provide this functionality.
We modified supplied webutil_db package body, so if the blobtable parameter is 'FILE' – closeblob procedure will use UTL_FILE to write OS file instead of updating blob in table.
    Now we can call
    webutil_file_transfer.client_to_db (clientfile => myclientfilename,
    tablename => 'FILE',
    columnname => myserverfilename,
    whereclause => myserverdir
This solution is working fine, but, of course, our concern is compliance of our custom changes with future releases of WEBUTIL.
Any plans to add something like Client_To_Server procedures to webutil?

    Just a thought..
    1) make table that accepts your blob via client_to_db.
    2) write a after insert trigger that copies file to an Oracle Directory on db file system.
You could also maybe use this PLSQL ftp package.. I havent used it.. Users talk about it frequently on other forums here, namely the sql and plsql forum.
    http://www.chrispoole.co.uk/apps/xutlftp.htm
Notice the "unloading blobs to database filesystem" line below.
With XUTL_FTP the transferring of the file IS the data loading process.
The file is NOT copied to disk, it's simply 'poured' straight into whatever table you like!
If this wasn't enough, it also has the other following uses:
unloading BLOBS to the database server file system (as UTL_FILE does not have a working binary implementation until 10g)
arbitrary unloading of data to remote servers
obtaining a file listing for a directory on the database server file system Message was edited by:

  • Using iPod as external file source for iTunes

I have a laptop and a HUGE iTunes library which is stored on an external HDD.
I'm taking the laptop on vacation (and not the external drive) which means that I won't have an iTunes library while on the trip.
I don't want to transfer GB of audio files onto my laptop HDD just for a trip but I would like to use iTunes.
    I wonder if I can -
1a. Set my iPod to act as a portable drive (I forget what this setting is called)
1b. Mount my iPod as an external drive
    2. Create a new iTunes library on the laptop HDD
    3. Set the preferences to import songs data but to leave the files where they are (I forget what this setting is called exactly).
    4. Import files found on the iPod external drive.
I realize that iTunes would only be able to play music when the the ipod was mounted as a HDD.
Does that sound like it would work? Is there anything I'm forgetting?
    Thanks.

You don't have to do any of that. Is your iPod large enough to hold your entire library? If so, all you have to do is set your iPod to MANUAL manage. Under manual manage, you can now hook the iPod up to ANY computer running iTunes and play the stuff directly from the iPod in iTunes.
To be safe, you still may want to start a new library on your laptop and just leave it empty. Then you can switch to that library when on vacation, play anything you want out of the iPod and not have to worry about accidentally messing something up with your normal library if/when it tried to access stuff from the external drive that is not with you.
When you get home, switch back to your normal library and change the iPod back to Auto update. Nice thing about this is when you change back to auto, your iPod will sync back to your original library and all the updates like ratings, play counts, last date played, etc. will sync back.
You can test it out right now. Just change your iPod to manual manage, APPLY, then go ahead and play right out of the iPod in iTunes.
    Cheers,
    Patrick

  • How to use iPod to transfer iPhoto Library to new computer

Well, I have been trying for a few days to move my iPhoto Library to my new Mac Pro.
Having trouble in Target Mode so thought it'd be easy to use my iPod for the transfer...
So, I synced all my photos onto my iPod...checked and all 6100 photos are there...
Now, when I hook up my iPod to my new MacPro and access my iPod, I see various folders including one names "Photos". So far so good...
I copied this "Photos" folder onto my new computer's desktop...
Now what do I do with it??? I tried dragging it into my iPhoto Library folder, but none of the pictures show up in iPhoto..
    thanks-

When the iPod is in disk mode, click on the folder in the Finder's sidebar with the house icon, followed by Pictures, and then drag the folder named iPhoto Library to the iPod. On the other computer, drag the folder back, renaming the existing library folder if needed; don't change anything inside the folder.

  • Problems with login after using assistant to transfer files

    Hi guys,
Today I got my new Macbook pro with intel 7 and Mac OS X 10.7. I started to transfer all info from the old computer, including user accounts, files, documents etc.
The old computer is a Macbook pro OS X v 10.6.8.
Everything was fine with the transfer until i tried to login on the new computer with same accoutsettings as the old. My new computer is telling me: Could not login to the filevaultaccount during a problem.
Do anybody know why i get this problem?
    Cheers,

I took that to imply a separate account. Since that's not the case, all I can suggest is to disable filevault on the old machine, wipe the new, restore Lion, and start over. I don't use FV, but suspect that might be what's causing your issues.

  • Can I transfer files from MBP to an iMac over my wireless network?

I am always having to transfer things from one computer to another and I am tired of using flash drives and DVD's and such to do it. Those ways are a lot of trouble. I have tried bluetooth but its to slow it seems. I know that I could probably do this over my home wireless network but I don't know how. Could someone help me out here? Is it pretty easy?
    TIA!

As for the login issue .. do you have any spaces in your Admin log-in name? If so, try typing in your Admin name with no spaces (Ex: mine is Gary A Mullinax when viewed on my G5 tower; however, when I connect with my MBP, I have to use garyamullinax for the log-in name .... then the normal password).
I can only suspect that there has been a setting overlooked on the MBP side that is keeping you from connecting from your iMac.
    Good luck.

  • Imac cannot transfer files to MBP

I have all of our 4 macs set up to be able to transfer and receive files from each other (or so I thought).
I am not able to transfer from one of the imacs to my mbp even though the mbp shows up in the device list on the imac.
Under sharing I have file sharing checked.
We are both running latest updates to Lion.
    Any tips???
    Thanks
