Using iPod with external Hard Drive connected to laptop

Is there a way to use the iPod video and an external hard drive connected to a Dell Latitude D600 laptop at the same time? I can use one or the other but not both. When both are connected using the usb ports on the back of the laptop, the iPod is not recognized, the message pops up saying unknown device. I do have the laptop connected to the power outlet. I have no problem using both when I am connected to the usb ports on the docking station at work, only when I have the stand alone laptop at home. I am using a 250GB Maxtor Personal Storage 3100 hard drive.
I found an article on CNet that suggested updating the bios and laptop software. I did this and still have the same issue.

You might have a drive letter conflict.
Both USB devices might be trying to use the same drive letter, and they're sort of "fighting" with eachother over who gets the letter assigned.
Try changing the drive letter of one of your devices.
You can use this article as a reference for changing the drive letter.

On start up Imac freezes on light blue screen with external hard drive connected via firewire. Starts okay without hard drive connected. I have repaired the drive with no resolution of the problem.

You might try starting the iMac in "verbose mode" by holding down command-V when booting:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1492
That could show you some messages that might explain the problem.
Another approach is to launch the Console utility and look for messages dated around the time of a hang.

  • Using iPod as external hard drive?

So when I bought my ipod classic a month ago, the guy in the store told me I could use it as an external hard drive and store files on it for whatever reason. My friend connected the ipod to his computer, which is a pc, and stored a LOT of .jpeg files of pictures in a specific folder. Now, when I plug my ipod into my mac, I can't find them ANYWHERE. I don't even know how to access the hard drive or do anything he did on the pc. Help please.

Okay, the only helpful knowledge I know on this is that you need to set the iPod on disk mode which is done on the iPod's screen when you sync it with iTunes.

  • Syncing iPod with external hard drive

I've had my iPod synced with my iTunes on my PC for some time.  However, lack of space on my PC's hard drive meant that I had to move my iTunes music collection to an external hard drive, and I've since added music to that library.
My question is, how do I now sync my iPod with my music collection on my external hard drive?
    Thanx in advance.

It shouldnt matter where the music is.  I used to hav my library on external drive before getting new computer with bigger internal drive.  As long as external is connected before starting iTines and the files are in library as being stored on external it should work.
What may be issue is how you moved library to external.  Did you use iTunes to move library to external?

  • Multiple (related?) issues with external hard drive connectivity

Apologies if this has been discussed but I have been unable to find a solution or explanation after searching here and on other forums.
I recently purchased an external hard drive (1TB Iomega Select Portable, bus powered, 2.5", USB 2.0). After formatting with two HFS+ partitions the device began disconnecting unexpectedly and afterwards was often not recognisable by my mac until I rebooted. I returned the product and had it replaced by another of the same model.
The replacement external hard drive worked fine at first but hours later began showing the same symptoms. _It now connects briefly then a few seconds later disconnects._ Occasionally it seems to mount and work fine, but the problem always comes back. In the times when it is working, _Time Machine recognises the drive but only backs up at a rate of about 1KB/s!_
_I don't know if this is a problem with the external hard drive, my USB ports, or settings on my mac._ Any advise you could offer would be greatly appreciated as I've run out of troubleshooting options with my limited knowledge of computers.
    _**Some tests I've done:_
    1) When it's not being recognised in Finder, it's also not recognised in either Disk Utility or System Profiler
    2) At one stage after repeatedly disconnecting, two other external hard drives and two thumb drives that I know work fine normally also failed to mount, but strangely two wireless mouse USB receivers worked fine. Both thumb drives were formatted as FAT32, one of the external hard drives had one HFS+ and one NTFS partition, and the other was entirely NTFS. When they weren't recognised in OS X, the two FAT32 drives and the NTFS partitions of the external hard drives were all recognised in Windows 7 via VMWare Fusion. After restarting the computer all of them now work on both Windows 7 and Mac OS X.
    3) I tried the external hard drive on another computer (a PC) and it was recognised in Vista's 'Disk Management' with both partitions marked as 'healthy', but it just called it 'Disk 1' rather than showing the names I'd given each partition.
    4) When I first started transferring files onto the drive I often got 'error code -36', but found a solution that seemed to fix that by deleting the '._' files from the source folder through Terminal.
    5) I've tried different USB cables, both USB ports on my mac, and also connecting with and without the secondary part of the 'y' cable that was supplied with it.
    Thanks very much,
    Andrew

I have the same problem with some 2.5 drives. My iMac on 10.5.8 sees the drive fine but my older 2007 Mac Book Pro 10.6.6 would not see it and now my new Mac Book Pro had problems seeing the drive from my old Mac Book Pro in that box. I had to use migration utility over the network that took 18 hours to copy my user over. I bought a new drive box and now the drive seems to work fine. I have ejected it a couple times and all seems well. I hope it continues to function properly.

  • Ipod with external hard drive

Ok, my old ipod broke and I have a new 60GB ipod. I had been having issues with my music taking up too much space on my hard drive so I got an external hard drive. I moved all my music there and itunes looks for my music on that drive. When I connect my external hard drive so that my music will be available in itunes my computer will not recognize my ipod at the same time. It will say the USB is not recognized. It will recognize the ipod without the external hard drive but this does me no good because then I can't update it and put my music on it. Please help this is very frustrating.

Same thing is happening to me. Sometimes the iPod and iTunes will update for 60 minutes without doing anything.

  • Synching Ipod with External Hard Drive

    Hey there,
I have a Powerbook G4 and a 5G video ipod with itunes 7. Now, my computer hard drive space is rapidly approaching full capacity, so its getting to the stage where I will need to transfer the 30 odd gigs of music to my external hard drive. But i was wondering what this action will mean when it comes to running itunes 7, and synching my ipod, as i'm sure there are a number of complications involved with locating the itunes library etc etc etc
Is there a way to transfer my entire music library to my external hard drive, yet still be able to easily update my ipod whenever I add new stuff???
Or alternatively, are there other alternatives
    Cheers,
    Mike

  • Why wont my macbook pro boot with external hard drives connected?

After two years of uninterrupted success running my MBP with five external hard drives attached (two USB, two eSATA with LaCie Expresscard 34, one FireWire 800), my MacBook Pro with Mountain Lion 10.8.2 installed will not boot with the drives attached. Starting up with the option key depressed does not work. Anyone have insight? This didn't happen until I upgraded to 10.8.2, so is there a bug fix needed in that update?

Update, I reset the PRAM (i think) and now the chime is back as I start up... small win but thats all it does.
So I decided to dload a copy of Lion and burn to a disc, then try and boot from there. When i boot holding option and select the dvd it sounds like something is happening, contstant turning or reading of the disk, but nothing is happening on screen, just my old friend the apple logo and his mate the spinning wheel. Starting to concede now, just hoping to get my data back, its mostly photos and some files i cant duplicate.
I am going to purchase Mountain lion on my current apple ID using a friends macbook and try and reinstall from there. Although i never had Mountain Lion installed in the first place (just lion) there isnt an option to buy lion on the app store (i dont think)  This is prob my last spin of the dice i think before handing it in, unless anyone on here has some ideas....

  • Problem with External Hard drive connection with PowerBook

I recently bought a Seagate FreeAgent/Go 500gig portable drive (2009) that only has a USB hookup. It does not register or operate on my PowerBook (G4 2005) but works fine on my wife's MacBook (2008). It appears from other discussion boards that it may be the case that not enough power is going through the USB port to the external hard drive. If this is correct is there a recommended solution so I can use the Seagate on both computers? Is there a way to get more power through the USB port?
I'd hate to have to go out and buy another external hard drive with an external power source because it would defeat the purpose of being portable if I have to have separate outlets for both the powerbook and the external hard drive (not to mention more cords). Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Are you sure an additional USB to power or "Y" cable didn't come in the box, ****123? Most USB powered drives seem to come either with a "Y" cable, or an additional USB to power cable, these days.
In fact the "Seagate Freeagent "Go" Quick Start guide (see http://www.seagate.com/staticfiles/support/freeagent/fago_mac_qsgr3.pdf ) actually shows one as necessary for using over USB (though this is the model with FW as well).
Seagate's own troubleshooting document concerning this issue can be found at http://seagate.custkb.com/seagate/crm/selfservice/search.jsp?DocId=213059&NewLan g=en

  • Help with external hard drive connection

I have two external hard drives. One is connected to my PCMCIA card firewire and the other to the original firewire port. When I get into the final cut pro program, the program shows little red slashes through my different things that I have put into the computer. I need to know how to retrieve those files. The computer does show that the external hard drive is connected, but it shows that the media is offline. I have done this before I just want to know how to reconect the media. I think it should be easy. Please help.

Have a read of of your Final Cut manuals, Volume IV, Chapter 6, Reconnecting Clips and Offline Media, then experiment with ctrl-clicking the offline files and selecting Reconnect Media.
If all is well and you have a good naming convention for your clips, a simple search should reconnect everything. If you have changed volume names or have a whole collection of files named 'Untitled Capture' then you may be in more trouble.

  • Newbie to MacBook needs help with using Itunes with external hard drive...

I got a MacBook yesterday. I am trying set my Itunes up but having a big problem. When I try to sync music from my external TB hard drive into Itunes, the music is apparently being copied into the laptop HD and is being synced from there, instead of straight from my TB HD. I WANT the music to sync straight from the external HD and NOT being copied in the Mac HD first and then synced like it is doing right now. I don't want to use the Mac's hard drive because I have limited HD space on my Mac and unlimited external capacity. Can anyone help me in setting this up. i've looked for answers but can't seem to find on here. Thanks for all the help. I love this Mac and this is the only real bump I've had. Thanks again.

Turn off the option to "copy files to iTunes Music folder when adding to library" is set in the iTunes -> Advanced preferences". iTunes will then just link to the tracks on the external drive rather than copying them to the internal. If you also want future imports and purchases to be saved to the external drive, change the location for the iTunes Music folder in the iTunes -> Advanced -> iTunes Music Folder location preference.
    Regards.

  • Need help using iPod as external hard drive

Hi. Will soon be receiving a new iMac to replace my old Dell PC and had a question about how to get all of the contents of the Dell hard drive onto my new iMac using my 60GB iPod. I am a complete computer novice.
    1. How do I do it?
    2. The iPod is currently formatted for my Dell PC. Once I have transferred all of my files (including music) over to the iMac, do I need to reformat the iPod? How do I do this?
    3. Will all my playlists in iTunes be saved when I do the transfer?
Any advice or direction to links would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks.

"how to get all of the contents of the Dell hard drive onto my new iMac using my 60GB iPod"
If everything you've got will fit then enable your iPod for disk use and drag what you want onto it, or do it a bit at a time: Using your iPod as a hard disk
There is a good general guide to switching from Windows to Mac at the following link that touches on moving music as well How to Move to a Mac - Get your stuff from your PC to your new Mac
"1. How do I do it?"
Have a look at this guide specifically on moving iTunes: How to use your iPod to move your music to a new computer
"2. The iPod is currently formatted for my Dell PC. Once I have transferred all of my files (including music) over to the iMac, do I need to reformat the iPod? How do I do this?"
If you don't intend using your iPod on Windows again the you can reformat it by restoring it on the Mac: Restoring iPod to Factory Settings
"3. Will all my playlists in iTunes be saved when I do the transfer?"
If you follow the instructions in the guide you should have your whole library just as it was.

  • Having problems with External Hard Drives on my Laptop

Ever since using linux i've always had the same problem. Whenever i connect a hard-drive, it keeps disconnecting/ spitting input-ouptut errors.
I thought it was because of the hard-drive failing, which turned out to be the problem with my last two, but i'm using another one (Seagate MomentusXT 500GB) and i'm getting the same problem.
I had just reformatted this hard drive from NTFS to Ext4 using Gparted, so maybe that's the problem? I'm really kind of lost.
I mount my HDD like this:
    sudo mount /dev/sdd1 /mnt/usb
    and unmount like this:
    sudo umount /mnt/usb
It connects initially, and i'm able to put stuff onto it. I was able to put a whole TV series on it successfully, but when i tried copying my music onto it it failed and alot of the music didn't copy, giving me these errors:
    ile system

Anyone know how to fix this?

There is a whole lot of bad going on there.
There are problems both drive errors and USB errors.  I don't believe it.
I have a hunch the drive is starving for power.
USB devices are supposed to function all the way down to 4.25V.  Not all do.
USB ports are supposed to be able to deliver 4.25V at the end of the cable at 500mA.  Not all do.
USB 2.0 devices are not supposed to draw more than 100mA unless they negotiate for more.  Some violate that.
USB 2.0 devices are never supposed to draw more than 500mA. Some violate that.  Especially disk drives.
My guess is that your drive is drawing excess current and the voltage drop through the port and cable are dropping you below 4.25; or at least below the voltage that your drive goes "Tango Uniform"[1].   Does your drive have the option for external power?  If so try it.  Following up on wtx's comment;  USB 3.0 is capable of delivering more power.   Also, some drives have used a cable that violates just about every aspect of the USB specification:  A "Y" cable that plugs into two host ports to provide more power to the guest.  I despise this solution with every fiber of my electrical engineering existence; never-the-less, you might try one.

  • Can I increase the capacity of Time Machine with an external hard drive connected to Time Capsule?

Can I increase the capacity of Time Machine with an external hard drive connected to Time Capsule via the USB port?  My current Time Machine has a total capacity of 1TB.  I'd like to double or triple its memory.  I don't want to use the external hard drive in lieu of the Time Capsule hard drive.  I'd like to use it in addition to.  Just don't know if/how it's possible.
This is another one of those questions that I've searched the web for answers, and have gotten tricky answers back.  So now I'm trying to introduce a clean slate to the mix.
    Thank you for your time!

Well, what you mentioning is possible.  However, I don't know whether it's supported (as in, "easy to set up.").  Time Machine officially supports backing up to a locally attached drive, to a machine running a Time Machine server (i.e. running OS X Server software), and to a Time Capsule.  I don't know that it officially supports a drive attached to an AirPort or to a Time Capsule.  Though I know some people have gotten it to work.
Best I can say is to try it.  Plug the drive into the Time Capsule, ensure it's shared on the network, and then try and set it as a backup target from a machine in the Time Machine backup panel (you'll need to ensure it's mounted first).  If it works, you're all set.

  • Does anyone use a LaCie external hard drive with their Mac using imovie '09?  I have some questions.

Does anyone use a LaCie external hard drive with their Mac using imovie '09?  I have some questions.

Are you actually having a problem with the new Lacie drive, or are you just asking is the Lacie drive somehow different from your old G-Drive?
From a connection standpoint, most Lacie desktop drives have both USB and FireWire connections, just like the G-Drives do.  You would connect and use it the same as a G-Drive.
Regarding capturing to the external HD, if you are using a camcorder that has FireWire (iLink) connection, it is not advisable to have an external FireWire HD connected to your Mac at the same time as your camcorder; there are often communication conflicts between the camcorder and the hard drive if they are connected at the same time.  The conflicts usually appear as either dropped frames or a complete freeze.   This is more common with Canon miniDV camcorders but I have also seen this behavior with Sony miniDV camcorders.  (The problem is the camcorder's FW implementation, not the hard drive.)  The workaround is to capture to your Mac's internal HD and later copy the captured video to your external HD.
