Using iTunes as an audiophile quality music server

I have recently setup up a music server using iTunes on a Wintel PC, connected through a Creative Audigy 2 external sound card to a Yamaha Class A stereo amp and Dynaudio speakers. Using Apple lossless compression, the sound quality of ripped CDs is equal to or better than my Yamaha audio CD player.
Has anyone else used this style of setup and what are your experiences?
The next step is to setup remote (couch-bound) operation by using a wireless keyboard/mouse and attempting to drive iTunes via the big screen TV with the S-Video out on the video card. Has anyone else done this and what were the results?
Speaking of remote operation, the Audigy 2 come supplied with a remote, but it only seems to control the volume. It has a full complement of controls (eg FF, Pause) that I would like to use to operate iTunes. Any ideas?
I have read up on Windows Media Centre and associated hardware. Besides being more focussed on video than music and providing an expensive way to watch TV, the overall costs are prohibitive and according to related web forums, the software seems unstable. Hence I've chosen the iTunes route.
Any and all input appreciated.
By the way, not an iPod in sight: - sacriledge I know. Don't tell Apple.

You didn't have to convert them.
Just select to burn them as an audio CD ad iTunes will convert as needed.

It doesn't.

These are just playlists. The songs there are really not duplicates of the songs. They are just a different location for accessing them. Some playlists can be deleted, some cannot. Ones that are created by iTunes cannot be deleted. Ones that you create can be. The Recently Added and the 90's cannot.

  • I downloaded music from iTunes onto my iPad. I enabled iTunes Match on my PC (where most of my music is stored). When I turned on iTunes Match on iPad it said the iPad music library would be replaced. How do I use iTunes Match without losing  iPad music.

I bought music from iTunes and downloaded it to my iPad. I have enabled iTunes Match on my PC (where most of my music is stored). When I turned on iTunes Match on iPad it said "iTunes Match will replace the music library" on my iPad. All of my iPad music is saved on iCloud, and some of my PC music is on iCloud. If I use iTunes Match will the music previously downloaded on my iPad be lost?
    Thanks!!

You need to either sync the iPad with iTunes so it will transfer the purchases to the iTunes library or download them from the purchase history. Then let iTM work on the "new" tracks in the library then all the music will be available on the iPad.

  • HT201272 Using iTunes 10.6.1, Redownload music option unavailable?

Using itunes 10.6.1, when I look at the "purchased" folder, I only see apps and books. This is the right account, the computer is authorized and the items are still available on itunes.
The same occurs in the iphone (4s, 5.1.1). ITunes on the phone does not even show the option of redownload.
    So whats wrong??

  • Using Mac Mini as a home music server

    Hi,
I own an unused 2009 Mac Mini and some 800G of music (in Apple Lossless format).  I was thinking of upgrading Mac Mini's internal HD to 1TB, download my Music into the Mac Mini and wire it to one of our 2 Hi-Fi sound systems.
As we also own a SONOS system, the music could then be played wirelessly into different locations within our house, including another Hi-Fi sound system.
The other pieces of hardware we own are :
    - One 2010 Mac Book Pro w. Mountain Lion (350 G / 8 G of RAM)
    - One 2011 Apple TV
    - One Ipad 2 (64 G)
    - Two Iphones 4S (16 G)
    - 3 other Ipods
Of course, we would like the music to be available from all these devices as well, especially to be able to manage our Iphones/Ipods from our MacBook Pro (where agenda, contacts, pictures... resides under two different profiles - and two Itunes/appstore accounts)
I am asking here in order to validate :
Q1 -  Is that this is a workable architecture, or  I am mistaken in this design ?
Q1.1 - Would it be more efficient to put the music library on an extarnal drive lwired to the Router and access it from all devices ?
Q1.2 - Will access from the other devices will be best acheived by granting read/write privileges to the users on the Mac Pro on the Mac Mini (so Mac Pro Itune can point directly to the remote library), or by sharing the music library via music sharing ?
Q2 - would I need a special server OS on the Mac Mini ?
    Here is a schema.
    Many thanks for your input.

do not confuse moving your whole folder and library with moving just media files as in

Quick answer if you let iTunes manage your music:  Copy the whole iTunes folder and all its subfolders and files intact to the other drive.  Start iTunes with the option key held down and guide it to the new location of the library.
If your whole iTunes folder + library files is already on the external, simply start the other computer's iTunes with the option key held down after the drive has mounted.

  • I'm trying to use iTunes Remote to share my music library across my network to various devices; it works with some caveats; I thought I'd be able to see and play back to the device (iPhone or iPad) just like I can to my apple tv or airport. I can't..

My question is whether my IOS devices should appear on the Airplay device list in the Remote application...  right now Apple TV, Airport Express, even my Samsung Note 3 appear as devices I can stream my iTunes library to... I can't seem to find a way to add the iPad or iPhone to that airplay list...  I can use either the iPad or iPhone to direct playback to any of the listed devices... that works great... but, they don't seem to allow me to direct playback back to the device I am using as the remote.  I'm trying to figure out if this is by intent or just not working right.
As a point of context, I am able to use my Samsung Note 3 to do exactly what I am trying to do with the iPad and iPhone... it works great.
And I understand that Apple intended me to use the Music app to play my shared library to my device... however, I have a BIG music library and when I ask the Music app to load up my shared library the little red circle gets about half full and hangs up... it never get there. The Remote app is great... I can see the whole library  instantly and play any song I want to the listed Airplay devices... that part is sweet... but I can't (and maybe there is no way to) add my IOS devices to the airplay playback device list.
I've burned a lot of time trying to figure this out... any help, including somebody telling me that it just isn't supposed to work that way, would be appreciated.

You have to swipe in a left to right motion. If the airplay icon isn't showing up it's likely something within your network that is blocking it. You can also try rebooting devices and router.

  • HT1373 I originally used iTunes and loaded my personal music to it when I got an iPod Shuffle long ago.  I have now migrated from Windows environments to a MacBook Pro.  My old iTunes account is associated with a dead email address at HP. How do I move it

I am trying to get an old iTunes account reactivated for my new MacBook Pro.  Originally I had iTunes for my iPod Shuffle and connected to it with a Windows laptop.  I have dumped Windows in favor of Mac OS and now have a MacBook Pro with iTunes installed.  I want to get at the 100s of songs I had out on iTunes but my email address for the old account is no longer active (was a work account and I have since retired).  How do I get a new email address (and ID) assigned into my old account so I can access it and get at my music?

Unfortunatly, you can't. I had the problem with an iPod classic and looked into it. You could make a new apple account and transfer it to that, but thats it and even that isn't garenteed to work.

When I first connect my Zen via usb, the Yahoo engine recognizes the Zen Micro but it is unable to read the contents of the Zen prior to my synchronizing. After trying to read my Zen for a while, I get the pop up message described above. I am using version 2..02 zen firmware and version .0..4 of the Yahoo engine.
Has anyone experienced this problem before? Does the Zen Micro actually work with the Yahoo service?

  • Is there anyone out there who has used iTunes Match for a large music collection who actually likes and recommends it?

I have over 16,000 custom selected songs in my library. It's the most important thing on my computer by far. Before I purchase Match, I would like to know if other users really like it.
When you purchase Match and all your tunes have been matched or uploaded, what do you do with your current iTunes library?
It's my understanding that you can stream tunes through your Mac computers but that you have to download them to an iPad, iPod or iPhone if you play the tunes through them, right?
When iTunes Match matches the tunes, does it put them where you had them prior to the match. I.e., will your library look the same as when you started?

When you purchase Match and all your tunes have been matched or uploaded, what do you do with your current iTunes library?
You need do nothing with it. You can keep it on your hard drive to access locally.

    Yes, that's correct.

It presents the library as it was originally on my hard drive, but then I don't have my library's organization customized.

  • Changed laptops, now iTunes can't find my music on my file server

Ok, here's what happened when I recently switched laptops
    - I use iTunes to point to the music I store on my file server via a network share (WinXP)
    - I manually manage my iTunes folders
    - I took the \My Documents\My Music\iTunes directory from my old laptop and copied it to the same location to my new laptop
    - Installed iTunes 9 on the new laptop
    - When iTunes9 loaded on the new laptop ALMOST all music files in my library loaded with an exclamation point indicating that it couldn't locate the file (even though the file locations never changed)
Ok... so here's the problem. I have over 20,000 songs with ratings information and if I just re-add all the files from the network share to the iTunes library again then it looks like I'd lose those ratings.
The only way that I can see to fix things is to individually point iTunes to the network share location of the file for each file... YUCK!
Is there a script or something I can write to tell it to find these files, or at least copy the ID3 tags to the duplicated songs that I re-added from the network share.
    Any help is GREATLY appreciated!

Something is different in the paths to the files....hence itunes cannot find them.
Sound like you know about the ITL file, which is why you copied it over.
What you can do is look in its companion XML file to see the paths itunes thinks it should be using.
If your XML is really big, open it using WordPad instead of NotePad. About the 10th line down is the itunes preference setting for the itunes folder:
    key>Music Folder</key><string>file://localhost/K:/iTunes%20Music/</string>
On my system it's K:/iTunes Music
The %20 just indicates a space.
Then each song will have its own path
    <key>Location</key><string>file://localhost/K:/iTunes%20Music/Cowboy%20Junkies/The%20Trinity%20Session/07%2 0200%20More%20Miles.mp3</string>
Now....can you see ANYTHING funny in one of those song paths? Is there an extra space, a different user name, anything different than what you could browse to in Windows Explorer?

  • Using Apple TV as a multi-room music server

I am trying to decide whether Apple TV is a good choice for use as a multi room wireless music server. I would rather use Apple TV than say Sonos because I like Apple TV's video capabilities. My decision is going to be largely based on Apple TV's/iTunes/Airtunes compatibility with my current 2 zone home theater system.
Right now the AV/wireless system looks like this:
-2 Zone Denon AV receiver wired to wall mounted speakers in the living room and kitchen/patio.
-Airport Extreme wired into cable modem
-Wall mounted speakers upstairs in bedroom (not connected to any amplifier)
    Ideally I want to add
-Apple TV wired to Denon receiver/TV w/ hdmi cable
-inexpensive AV receiver/amp in bedroom to power wall mounted speakers
-Airport Express jacked into receiver to stream iTunes library from Apple TV
    -Everything controlled with iPhone
    Questions:
    1. Will this work?
    2. Any idea what my best options for an inexpensive Airtunes friendly amp/receiver are?

BorrachoPix, An excellemt thread. Always good to know others doing or intending to set up same similar systems. So many options these days it takes a fair while going through them all. I ruled out Squeezebox as not being user friendly enough and was going the Sonos route untill Apple released the itouch remote app which changed everything and gave me an excuse to get an itouch into the bargin as well !!!!!
Have you though of using a pair of Active speakers instead of Amp and Speakers in the bedroom. Maybe the AudioEngine A2 or A5 Speakers.
Jask, I use to have the 3801 before changing to the 2807. Will probably do as you suggest and go optical and component video to the amp keeping the HDMI slots for SkyHD and the DVD player. I always find the Denon set up menu a bit of a nightmare but usually get there in the end.
Perhaps I should be thinking about an iMac for next year as well to complete the circle......just not sure I can justify the expense.

  • When I moved all my music stored in my Windows 7 user account under the My Music folder  to my PC's 'Public Music' folder, I could no longer add/delete music or movies to my iPhone using iTunes. How do I fix this?

I have been synching my iPhone with iTunes without problems for a long time.  I also used iTunes to add/change/delete Music & Videos on my iPhone with tuch contents from my iTunes Library.
One day, I decided to move all my Music stored on my laptop's Windows 7 User Account under "My Music" to the Windows 7 User "Public"  under "Public Music".  When I opened iTunes, all my music was gone so I just added the folder "Public Music" to my iTunes Library, iTunes did some work and all my music was then back, listed in my iTunes.
However, when I would synch my iPhone now, when I view the music or movie contents in my iPhone using iTunes, I can no longer ADD Music or Movies to my iPhone and I cannot delete music or movies in my iPhone using iTunes anymore.
How do I fix this?  Please help.

Try opening iTunes preferences. Then click on advanced tab. Then uncheck "Copy files to iTunes media folder when adding to library." By default, iTunes copies music to its own media folder when you use iTunes to play the music.

  • Can iTunes act as UPnP music server?

    Hello,
I fail to find out if iTunes can act as UPnP music server
and if not, if it is planned to do so.
More and more wi-fi radios (like Roku) can connect to your
PC and stream the music from there provided that your
    music server supports UPnP.
    Many thanks for any hint...

No, iTunes itself does not work as a UPnP server, though other such servers can pull from the iTunes library, presuming of course that you import your tracks in a format such a server can handle. Whether or not Apple has any plans for iTunes to ever support UPnP, no one here will know or can say.

  • After Updating to iTunes 7, cannot download from Music Store

Since updating to iTunes 7 I have had trouble downloading from the iTunes Store. At first all was well, I went into the store, bought some tracks, started downloading them and then my router died, cut my connection and halted my download. After sorting out the router and re-connecting to the internet iTunes has started reporting that the network has timed out and cannot connect to the music store.
I can still browse the music store but if I try to log in or download anything I get the error that the network timed out. I have tried multiple things to resolve this including restarting the laptop and router, uninstalling iTunes altogether and reinstalling it, running the Diagnostics in iTunes but to no avail.
In the diagnostics window the first two tests pass ok but the third test seems to fail when a secure connection needs to be made, which would explain why I can browse the store but not download anything or log in because this would require secure connections.

    Ok all is now well.
Basically I checked with BT and there were no problems on the network, the problem had to be somewhere between my router and iTunes. Next I checked if I could download anything from another computer using my internet connection and the same thing happened so that isolated the problem to router. I then checked the firmware on the router and this was up to date so I then wondered if there might be some dodgy registers within the router that maybe corrupted so I performed a factory reset of my BT Home Hub, but alas that didnt fix anything (unless your connection is running <200Kb/s then it fixes everything, but thats another story, if in doubt reset it!) Anyway, I was putting all my settings back in and realised the Home Hubs Firewall had been activated and as soon as this was disabled, hey presto! iTunes magic returns!
I have since realised that the reason the router may have randomly cut out in the first place was to upgrade the firmware of the Home Hub, hence the sudden blockage of iTunes by the reactivated firewall.
Since correcting this I have had no trouble using iTunes 7, no issues with music or connecting my 4Gb iPod Nano. To all those who are struggling with this I suggest you update your iPods firmware to the latest version to ensure it is compatible with iTunes 7.
Respond here if anyone else needs help.
