Using iTunes from nas as streaming service

Hi
I would like to know if Apple, like the Linux community, have found a way to stream video and music from iTunes library place on a NAS drive so that You don't have to have Your AirBook or MacBook open and running as well.
I have been informed that only way to use iTunes as a streaming library, is that I have my AirBook open and iTunes running before I can stream video or music through AppleTv to my television set.
Please tell me, that Apple has created a solution for the above, as I really like to use the product much more cost efficiently than have power on too many devises in order to stream Video and Music.
Regards
Preben

Presumably there would have to be a program running on the NAS itself to serve the files.  I don't think Apple sells any NAS so probably doesn't develop for it. I note that many people have problems getting NAS to work with iTunes even when iTunes is running and there's probably problems with NAS talking to iTunes.  I don't recall seeing any NAS support by Apple itself, but a few people have mentioned some brand of NAS which does make a library on another drive appear as a "shared" library in iTunes.  Again, I recall it was not flawless.

I would suggest that join your iphone with iTunes and do not sync. Than in your info window of iTunes uncheck auto sync of songs and videos. Check Mark for manual selection of songs. Also uncheck sync of songs window. After this sync your iphone and manually copy your songs from your iphone through itune by opening music under your iphone icon in the left status bar and copy to your laptop music folder. I think it would help out.  I did same for myself. Try out. TC

  • Can an American use iTunes from outside the US to download movies?

Can an American use iTunes from outside the US to download movies?  The Terms & Conditions that just popped up as I was going to download a movie seems to indicate "no."  So Americans traveling abroad are out of luck?

You can only use the Store for the country that reflects your billing address. This applies worlwide, not just to Americans.

  • How do I use itunes from an external HDD on a new laptop?

This really does seem to be an unanswerable question but you guys have helped so many times in the past without me ever having to post.
Here is my set up when I first got iTunes way back I had it on my first laptop, we'll call this PC A, but the Hard Drive was so small I moved the library to my external HDD. I say I moved it, a friend did it for me.
For years this set up worked fine, iTunes was on the HDD and I would access it via PC A as long as the two were connected. If the HDD wasnt connected then I couldnt access iTunes, of course, as all of the library was stored on the HDD.
I dont want to sound like I am talking to you all like idiots but Ive explained this so many times and people never know what I mean.
So now I get another laptop. (PC B)  but obviously I cant get to iTunes from it even when the HDD is attached.
For years I used to crank up old PC A and get to iTunes that way but now the old girl is on her last legs so I need to be able to access iTunes from PC B (this has been going on so long Im now looking for PC C).
I do have iTunes on PC B that my iPhone is synced to and they seem to understand that each other exists but if I plug my iPod that is synced with iTunes from PC A with PC B it wipes it
Please. Please. I just need to know what to do

    Make a split library portable
Here are the typical layouts for the iTunes folders:
In the layout above, with the media folder (everything in the red box) inside the library folder, the library is considered to be portable. A portable library can be moved from one path to another without breaking the links between the library and the media and being self-contained is much easier to backup.
You can rearrange things to make a split library portable by taking a number of small steps which don't break the library.
Before you start any media files that are outside of the media folder will need to be consolidated. If the library is in the old style layout then it should ideally be be upgraded to iTunes Media Organisation (Library > Organise Library > Rearrange files in the folder <Media Folder>) to ensure that iPod Games, Mobile Applications etc. are brought inside the media folder.
    The basic non-fatal manipulations are:
You can connect to an alternate set of library files by holding down Shift (Win) or Option (Mac) when starting iTunes.
You can move the library files to a new location as long as the media stays put.
You can move the library files and the media together if the media folder is a direct subfolder of the library folder. (I.e. in this form the libary is portable).
If you have already moved/copied the media content from a subfolder of the library folder to a different location then you only need to copy the library files for it to appear as if you have moved the entire library in the way allowed above. I.e. just copy the library files into the parent folder of the media folder.
You can rename the media folder to iTunes Media (if it isn't already) if the media folder is inside the library folder.
iTunes uses the name of the folder holding the library files as the window title. Having made a library "portable" you may need to take a final step of renaming the library folder to iTunes or, if the library files have ended up at the root of a drive, moving all of the library files and content folders into a new folder called iTunes.
After each change you need to open, test and close the relevant library before attempting another change. If a change broke the library, undo it or revert to using the previous set of library files.
In essence all you need to do to make your library portable is copy the library files into the parent folder of the media folder on the external/secondary drive and use the hold-down-shift/option-when-starting-iTunes method to connect to it. Other manipulations may be required to normalize the library so that the library and media folders have standard names.
If you are making the library portable in advance of migrating it from one system to another, don't forget to deauthorise the old computer if you're not planning to use iTunes on it again.

  • Using iTunes to Play Music Stream On LAN

I have a Denon ASD-3W which serves as an iPod dock and accesses radio internet stations (via vTuner website) and plays them through my stereo. That works great. Given that stream is playing across my LAN, how would I tap into that using iTunes and play it on several other speakers around my house (Airport Extreme)? I have tried opening a URL using the IP address of the ASD-3W but thad has not worked. Do I possibly need to access a specific port?

Perhaps you should ask in the iTunes discussion area.

  • Using iTunes from an external harddrive?

I would like to know if it is possible to download and run itunes from an external harddrive.
I have a lot of music and would not like it to be on my macbook's harddrive.

The iTunes application needs to be on the boot drive, but you can put your media anywhere you wish. The easiest way is to just drag the entire iTunes folder (the entire folder, not just the iTunes Music folder) to your desired location. Then hold down the Option key while launching iTunes. You'll be given a dialog box where you can select the iTunes library you want to use. Navigate to and select the iTunes folder in it's new location.
Note that this procedure assumes that all of your tracks are contained in the iTunes Music folder. If they're scattered around your drive, moving them becomes much more complex. And don't launch iTunes with the external drive not mounted or iTunes will default back to the internal drive. If it does, though, just mount the external drive and launch iTunes with the Option key again.
Don't delete the tracks from the old location until you've confirmed that they're working correctly from the external drive.
    Regards.

  • Using iTunes with NAS

I have all my music and itunes files (iTunes Library.itl, etc) on a NAS. I have an iMac and a MacBook. If I point each to the library on the NAS should I be able to use them both with the same library without corrupting any files?  Eventually I want to use my MacBook exclusively for iTunes but I'm unable to do that for a while. Thanks in advance for any advice/suggetions.

This topic was recently discussed on this forum.  I am of the opinion it won't have any ill effect on the files, but no direct experience.  Another responder was concerned about file corruption, but didn't provide reasoning.
The one major problem you likely will have is the library file cannot be opened by two copies of iTunes at the same time. You will have to ensure that when using iTunes on one computer you quit the application before using it on the other. The way to avoid this is for each computer to have its own library file but the media are stored and shared on the NAS.  Unless two people are trying to edit the tags on the same media file at the same time there shouldn't be any conflict. The disadvantage is you have ot keep both libraries up to date.  As you can see, some of the best response lie in the detail of the setup and users which you haven't told us.  If you are the only user of both computers you can make it work with a single library file which will always be up to date when opened on either computer.  If it is two users then each will probably want their own library anyway and you should set it up that way.  Of course media changes will have to be applied separately to each library.

  • Is it possible to use Itunes from a different country?

I am currently using itunes music store in ireland but i want to use the itunes music store in the UK.Is it possible to do this and if so, how?

    A - no, except:
In order to buy from a certain country's iTMS, you do need
either: a CC with a billing address in that country
or: an address in that country plus a prepaid card/gift voucher issued by iTMS in that country.
If you don't meet one of this conditions, there is no solution for you.
-sorry but the copyright holders wanted it that way.

  • Running iTunes from server as a service?

I have itunes running on a windows server that i would like to use for sharing/streaming to clients on the network. I can turn itunes on once i'm logged in (via remote desktop) and it will work fine, but it eventually logs me off and therefore looses sharing.
Is there a way to run itunes as a service with sharing? I figured out how to create a service that works, but it's not sharing - so I'm sure there's something missing.
At any rate, is this possible? To have itunes running when the machine turns on...WITHOUT having to log in? Thanks!!!

I wrestled with the same thing. The aggravating part is that even if I have a "master" system set up with iTunes running and the entire library shared, I can't share playlists, and I can't create playlists on the "clients" that contain songs on the master system's shared library... at least I couldn't the last time I attempted it.
So here's my workaround. It's kinda clunky, but it works:
All my music is contained in an iTunes directory on a shared drive on a server. I then configure a "master" system to use that directory for storage of music files, and have "copy to iTunes folder" and "keep iTunes folders organized" checked. Anytime I import a CD, I use that system.
For every "client" system, I install iTunes normally, then I change the music directory to the directory on the shared drive, and UNCHECK both "copy to iTunes folder" and "keep iTunes folders organized". Then I simply do an "add folder to library" from iTunes, reference the shared iTunes directory, and voila!
The really clunky part, however, is that every time you import a new CD using the master, you have to go in and do "add folder to library" on all the clients for it to show up on the clients' libraries.
Also, if you make sure all the clients use the same drive mapping to the shared directory, you can export and import playlists.
It works.... and as long as you have them all configured correctly and only import music on the "master" system, it works quite well.

  • Airtunes problem when using iTunes from a client

I like to use my iBook to control iTunes playback and music collection management. My music files are on a hard drive connected to my iMac G4. My main stereo rig is in a different room. I use the iBook to stream music from the G4 to an Airport Express, which is connected to my stereo.
Music Sharing works great but doesn't allow me to manage (e.g., make playlists, rip new CDs, assign star ratings) my collection from the iBook. So, I have a user account on the iBook that uses the same iTunes Library file as the G4. This user account has an alias to the G4's iTunes Library file in place of its own iTunes Library file, and this gives me the same functionality on the iBook that I would have on the G4. (Only one user can access this library file at a time.)
The only hitch is that to use this approach, I need to connect my iBook to my network using Ethernet. Being able to use a wireless connection would increase the convenience of this arrangement, but drop-outs in playback occur regularly if I am not cabled to the network. Music Sharing works fine over wireless, but not this alternative arrangement.
With each release of a new version of iTunes or Airport software, I hope this glitch will be licked. I've been waiting almost two years, and the problem is still there. Does anyone have any comment or ideas?

Hello, see how many of these you can answer...
See if the Disk is issuing any S.M.A.R.T errors in Disk Utility...
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH7029
Open Activity Monitor in Applications>Utilities, select All Processes & sort on CPU%, any indications there?
How much RAM & free space do you have also, click on the Memory & Disk Usage Tabs.
Open Console in Utilities & see if there are any clues or repeating messages when this happens.
In the Memory tab, are there a lot of Pageouts?

  • How do I use Itunes from external drive as main sync for Iphone 4

I apologize if this is obvious but I have searched for quite awhile without finding result.
I currently have my iTunes synced to my Macbook Pro. I purchased a Macbook Air for ease in travel. I would like to move sync of my material on iTunes to my Air as I carry it more with me.
I was told at an Apple Store to purchase a Time Machine and an external hard drive. Both I purchased. I then read for a few hours how to move my itunes to the external drive. The only way I could finally get it to work was to physically connect a USB between the MacBook Pro and the External Drive. Once my Pro recognized the External Drive I dragged my Itunes and watched it copy all the data.
Unfortunately, when I am on the Air I cannot locate within Finder the External Drive. I do see my time Machine but cannot figure out how to get my itunes data from the external drive through the time machine.
    You still with me?
So, can someone help me understand how to go the next step. As I understand from reading this forum I would then go into my Advanced Properties in Itunes (on the Air) and choose to relocate where the iTunes sync occurs. Then I can use my Air for syncing as it wont be dependent on the limited space and once I've changed the properties location for where to find my iTunes data I wont be dependent on the Pro.
PS: Yes I've downloaded all of the newest product software updates (iTunes, iPhone OS, Macs) as of the date this is posed 3/20/2011

    try this:
hold the option key and launch iTunes. at the prompt, click on +choose library+ and select the iTunes folder you copied to the external.
obviously, the external holding your library must be mounted on your desktop for iTunes to find it.
if the drive is connected but doesn't show up on the Air's desktop, go finder > preferences > general and check if +external disks+ is check marked under +show these items on the desktop+.

  • Problem using iTunes from Public Terminal

My problem is downloading from certain Public Terminals that will not allow iTunes to be installed and the IT at the local library refuse to allow it to be installed.
At home, I am on low-speed dial-up (56k) that prevent me from downloading TV Shows due to numerous time-outs and length of time for downloading.
Is there anyway I can access the iTunes store and download without having iTunes installed on the Public Terminal?
Currently, every few weeks, I go to the nearest University and use their Public Terminals to download material, but would prefer to use the local public library as it is much closer, and I could download more stuff.
Thank You for your assistance in this matter.

I have no experience with anything this author advises. It sounds interesting, though and may provide you with direction.

Hi all i am new so dont kill me i want to take my music off my macbook pro and access it from my external hard drive. is there a way that i can transfer the the files with playlist and re open itunes using my external drive and have all the playlist there. also when i save music how do i set it up to save to the external hd? this way i can take it to my office if i need to use it or my other systems. Please point me in the right direction.

To move your iTunes music and info to an external drive...
    Quit iTunes.
Move the entire iTunes folder including music to the external drive.
Click on the iTunes icon to start it, then immediately press and hold the Shift key in Windows, Option key in Mac.
iTunes will ask to Create new library or Choose existing library. Select Choose existing library and select the library in the folder you just moved.
Move the old iTunes folder to the trash but do not empty it.
Restart iTunes normally and verify the songs work. If they do, empty the trash.
